LED for notifications won't blink after missed call - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just like in topic. I have latest PA3+ (Halo8) + kernel from franco, also newest (r142). Led working on all other app, gmail, sms, etc. but not on missed calls. I tried set up it in settings (display > flashing LED), but it creates "contacts" instead of "phone".
Where's the problem? On ROM or kernel site?
Cheers!

Same here, with older releases it was same(everything work except calls).
Try this app works great https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageconsulting.android.lightflowlite

I don't know why really, but I'm trying keep away from this app
I read too much negative opinions about it (especially battery drain). I thought is a easy to repair bug, but if isn't, I'm forced to wait for fix for this.
Thanks for advice anyway!

There is no noticeable battery drain from LightFlow on the N4. Have a look at the thread on the app in the apps sub-forum - no complaints about battery there.

A Great Idea!!!

Im pretty sure we all agree that the EVO has sub-par notifications. It doesn't have alternative colors for the LED and when plugged in you get absolutely no notification, unless you use that app that I forgot the name of...
But anyways I was wondering if it would be possible to use the capacitive buttons as a Notification source.
Maybe we could have the home button blink for sms
the menu for calls, return for emails, etc. I don't know much about software development and all that crud, but I was just reading this idea on another phones forum and I figured it would be something extremely worthwhile for evo users, and in all honesty, its a pretty dam brilliant idea if we could just get it to work.
don't bash me if its not even possible. I was just simply trying to help my fellow EVO users by sharing a creative thought.
in the theme and app section there is apk that does this already well it flashes all of them for notifications

look at post number 8 for the apk
That app was for the Samsung Moment, it doesnt work on the EVO.....
You know this idea isn't half bad and it may be possible through a combination of the kernel and an application. For reference there is a hack someone made for the G1 that allows you to use the leds under the buttons for notification of the sd card. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685947
That said, maybe we could use this idea to help us with this hack.

Would be awesome.
How are blinking buttons better than a blinking LED?
I think more convenient than flashing the capacitive buttons (which would probably use more battery too) is just flashing the LED for more than 5 minutes (indefinitely), and also flashing the LED even during charging, as I mentioned in this thread forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712803.

the buttons wouldn't have to flash continuously. It could be just for a few seconds and we can set up reminders like every 5 or 10 mins, that way hardly any battery life is consumed..

Notification LED

I'm noticing that the LED flashes only some of the time for things like Twitter and SMS. The notification bar has the update on it but the LED seems to not want to play ball.
Has anyone else experienced this or similar? I know the LED works because it shows when charging and when the battery was low it flashed. Specifically I use Touiteur and had the LED set to blue but even on the standard green it's hit and miss.

Mine doesn't flash when I get email, but seems to work for SMS or missed calls.
I was hoping someone would make a thread about this, I never got around to making one!
Mine flashes for everything which is annoying!!! I get a lot of emails so is constantly flashing! I've tried going into Settings -> Display -> Notifications and deselecting everything except Missed Calls and SMS/MMS but made no difference!
i'm so used to Magic 8 colors... shame DHD has only orange and green
also it somehow tends to turn it off after a while being on.
I've sent an email to HTC to ask about it since it's a big issue to me. Notification sounds feel similarly hit and miss so I'm suspecting some trigger is being missed, possibly due to the new Sense UI. I'll post any reply I get.

I've got two led's. One for the battery on the right of the speaker and one on the left behind the speaker. The left one is for notifications only n I must say I'm disappointed as its located being the speakers its not as visible as I would like it to be. Is there anyway to get the battery led to function as a notification led as its not covered so much more visible?
I've got a reply but nothing helpful. So far it seems they're willing to blame app compatibility. I've asked for information regarding any changes that have been made to the LED notification system on the Desire HD and now I wait for another reply.
I told them I had no such issues on two other Android phones and they seem to be implying that the apps are coded for specific phones when we all know apps are coded for an SDK version. To quote the part of the reply...
"All the functions/programs you mean are made for Nexus and G1/Dream most of the times, Desire and some other are similar enough for it to work. Cannot help you with third party software."
Pretty clear the guy doesn't have a clue about this so I'm hoping if I nag long enough he'll pass me on to someone with more knowledge.

I see two LEDs up top but charging uses the same LED as the notification system. The left one behind the grill. I haven't seen the second one light so it's probably the proximity sensor.

Another really pointless reply from them.. in the initial contact I mentioned the camera being misaligned so that's what the first part is referring to. Here's the latest reply and below it is how I have just responded.
Dear <me>,
Since receiving your e-mail i have looked for any more known cases and was unsuccessful if you are concerned that this may cause issues i recommend that you take the device back to the retailer.

Response to it from me..
Hi,
With regards to the LED notifications, I'm not asking for developer support or any support in fact. I'm simply trying to find out if HTC have changed the method for using them with the Desire HD. You said that programs are coded for specific phones and I'm sorry but that's not true. They are made for SDK versions, most going as far back as Android 1.6 for widest compatibility, so any changes in the programs affecting the LED notifications would show in ALL versions, not just the version shipping with the Desire HD.
This again points to either HTC changing something with the Desire HD or a programming bug with the Sense UI in some way. I realise this isn't an easy issue to look into but it is a very important one and while I appreciate you're trying your best, I will not let this issue drop until I get a more satisfactory answer.

To me this is a very big deal because if you leave the phone for a few minutes and aren't close enough to hear an audio notification the LED is what I rely on. Missing notifications like this I might expect from a custom ROM but I haven't touched the phone in any way like that. I didn't see your reply in time to mention the GMail issue and I only have my experience to go on which is Twitter updates not always firing. You should raise a ticked too, the more we get raising the issue the better the chance they'll look into it.
i stop sending tickets to HTC last year... they never fix anything.
I rather find a perm root and put CM onto it!
Their latest and seemingly final reply seems to have something that may point to an answer. Unfortunately I lack the knowledge to check if it is of any use. The guy suggested any changes would be in the Kernel and linked me to the source code area. Is anyone able to look into the source code and see if there are changes to the notification LED system for the DHD? It's pointless not useful to ask app developers to look into it until we have something concrete to point at as a cause.

I asked Cyanogen about this and he thinks the lights driver he wrote for the G2 may work.
Being a basic user I have no idea how to try that out without instructions so... I've done the fact finding, who's going to help with this part?
My email LED notification has not been working properly, sometimes yes but mostly no.
Got email mid morning today, sound and LED worked. Left it in this state for several hours still okay. Just got another sound notification for the same previous email, how does that work
Think this is yet another bug....
I've now had this happen with the GMAIL app so I'm bugging them some more.
Would there be any point in posting in the development section to ask for help using the G2 lights driver from Cyanogen?

I've also had GMail fail on LED notification and SMS! It seems to be random now. Coming from a WM6.5 defector I quietly smile to myself
I think I figured it out and if im right it's really stupid. I had two notifications earlier, one for Twitter and the other for e-mail (not gmail). The LED wasn't flashing for either. I opened Touiteur to view the updates thete which cleared that notification and straight away the LED began flashing for the e-mail alert.
Why one notification would disable the LED if it's already on I have no idea but the above has happened more than once now. There's an LED test on the phone which HTC had me test. It has other tests too for anyone curious.
Key this into the dialer.

CM Nightly - DIALER WAKE LOCK FIX

....YES I KNOW THERE'S A NIGHTLY DISCUSSION FORUM....
This topic has washed around and around in Nightly Discussion and none of us have figured it out... UNTIL NOW.
With some help, actually most credit to the other member the Wake lock issue is solved I believe.
If you're running one of the CM 7 Nightlies and are experiencing Dialer as a PARTIAL WAKE LOCK, please check the following:
First, I bet you are using Google Voice and chose that as your voicemail service, right?
Menu > Settings > Call Settings >
Under Voicemail Service, what is showing? My guess is it says "My Carrier"
Click on it, select GV, let it prompt to dial the *28..... config number and complete it's process.
Then it returns you to the Call settings screen where Google Voice should be showing as your VM service.
Reboot, you're done.
I think something happens when first setting GV as the VM service. Personally my phone was behaving strangely when the first config ran, this is the issue and so far confirmed with several users.
I only posted new thread because this is important to many running CM Nightlies, and with 1000+ pages it would be lost on that specific thread.
Was getting Dialer partial wake even though GV was set correctly, so I don't think that was the problem. I don't see it being a problem anymore, wondering if it was fixed on the latest nightly.
I did this earlier today the wakelock was gone, but it's come back and it's still set to google under voicemail settings.

Normally, I would agree with you, but I think these days... I don't. This is a much more high caliber post when compared to people who want to ask about what PS3 game they should buy, or they got their cancer cured, or they just want to post about the new phone on sprint even though this is an EVO forum.
I say.... this post is refreshing!
Would be interesting if it was a discussion and not zomg I fixed the wakelock but it doesn't work for anybody but me
couldn't resist sorry. I really wish I knew why this was happening. I am also getting a wakelock with minimalist text that I cannot get rid of, though that one is not so bad
Swyped from my cyanogenized and gingerbreaded EVO
Turning off Turn over silence in Call settings killed the dialer wakelock for me.....
.....nope.

Well I am really sorry to hear this didn't work for you guys. Like I said, on the Nightly forum and also over on the CM site there were about 15-20 users who confirmed this corrected the issue, furthermore there was no one claiming it didn't.
Just goes to show you how helpful it is to have a place to focus on a specific problem, i.e. THIS THREAD.
Anyhow, I realize most of you goobers think I should've posted under the nightly thread, whatever, this is the general forum and I can post as I see fit. Suck it.
I tried this too, and it didn't fix the issue. The dial battery usage still shows more than 90%. Every hour I lose at least 10% of battery ... Searched for other solutions, but no success.
evo 4g, cm rc2, salvagedzen 0.1.2 havs bfs

I have never had a dialer wakelock problem. Went to sleep last night with 100% battery or so, woke up and had 94% or something like that 8 hours later
I just had a simular issue with this and wakelocks from Dialer. It was caused when I did a program from Verizon, changing my voicemail settings away from Google Voice.

[NOOB] Everything BLN

In an effort to clear up every other thread that you are all ruining with stupid unrelated to roms or kernel BLN questions I have created a magical thread for you all to use instead.
So if you have any BLN questions or issues or advice to give then put it here not in other threads!
Thanks
What is BLN?
BLN stands for Back Light Notifications
Why do we need it?
Well if you are prudent enough you will have noticed that unlike the majority of android phones, Samsung don't see a need to have a LED on the phone to flash to warn you that you have a notification. So some bright spark invtented a way to enable the menu and back keys to flash when you get a notification.
How do I use it?
You need 3 things:
- Modified Liblights.so (this might come in a rom or kernel, it might not)
- Modified BLN compatible kernel
- BLN Control App (free or pro on market)
Stock Samsung SMS app is not generating notifications?
No, this is because Samsung are not stupid, they knew the app was for a phone without an LED so they did not use any light flags at all. You have 3 options, hack the stock sms app to use a Lights flag, use a third party sms app like Handcent SMS or GoSMS or finally use tasker.
If you want SMS to work with stock Messaging app then flash on of these - http://goo.gl/DXlyn beware they are only for KG6 using on other roms may cause undesirable effects (or could be fine )
I want it to work for missed calls
Well then you need to get the Pro app from the market where it has an option to turn on the missed calls feature (and don't listen to some fools, this does work!)
But I am a cheapskate who doesn't buy paid for apps
TOUGH!
Awesome thread mate. Should clear it up for most people I do hope that more people release ROMs with a hacked SMS app for BLN

As soon as someone manages to make the app I am sure most custom roms with BLN would use it.

Well it worked with the stock sms on the S1, so I would suppose they can make it work for the S2.
Someone will eventually post this so let me be the one to do it instead
Why not hack the mms.apk for us so that the BLN can work with the stock sms app.

That's actually being discussed in another thread.
So.... what rom or kernels are bln enabled?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Ninphetamine kernel is, villain rom 2.4.2 is, other roms that say in there thread title are.
Most roms are now as its the big new thing, also most custom kernels built from source are now but check there threads.
CF root isn't bln enabled as its a repackaged stock Kernel, stock roms are not unless modified with a custom kernel with it enabled and a updated liblights

Awesome idea OP!!!
Good idea, now let's see if people can keep the questions in this thread...
I've had BLN Pro since SGS(1), and with Criskelo and Ninphetamine it works great.
Only thing I've done differently, is install Handcent, to get BLN working with SMS and MMS.
To get calls working BUY THE PRO! and tick off "call notification" in "BLN for Android-OS apps"
Since this the appropriate thread, are there any major disadvantages for BLN to be on all the time apart from battery? Have S1 users ever faced BL issues, stop working completely or something?
Great thread!
Cheers

It's only battery AFAIK.
And with appropriate settings you can even keep the drain low enough.
I set mine to 30min blink and 45min static - if I haven't picked up the phone by then I wont in a longer time anyways so more blinkage is not required IMO and for the meantime I got all the notifications I want.
Drain on battery is totally OK for me with those settings.

yeah it basically is just the negative battery impact
your phone will not deep sleep while BLN is active so the longer you have it showing the longer your phone stays "awake" which therefore increases your battery drain
I have mine set up to blink for 5 minutes then be static for 30.
Thank you for the thread. Before that I had to figure out all that by myself. Time saving
Alright, I think I won't get banned by asking my 'noobish' queries 'here'. So here it goes,
► I flashed Ninphetamine 2.0.5 kernel and Flashed Liblights.zip from Jame Bond thread and installed BLN Control Pro. Now the thing is, Missed Call notification DOES work. Now the thing is everyone is saying that BLN drains battery, I mean how could it drain if it's not in use?
► Also, I'd like to know what is Static LED timeout? I have it Disabled. What does it do?
► Schedule BLN? Why should I turn it on when it works with it Disabled?
I am using it from yesterday and I don't see there is any extra battery drainage or something like that other than two extra services, w|FileObserver & w|LedObserver is there under Wakelocks for a minute or two, and usually that short period didn't make any difference on battery backup. So why is that everyone keeps saying BLN drains battery if it does nothing?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.
When the buttons lights up continually can the phone sleep? When they blink it's pretty clear why the phone does not sleep...you need an active timer to switch the buttons states.

Of course, when the buttons glow the phone will not sleep but that state won't be forever as a normal person does check his/her cell phone at an interval of 15-30 mins, least I do, I didn't ask for that. What I asked was, How does BLN drain battery when it's not in use, and by that I mean when you have NO new/unread notifications?
I hope I made myself clear enough.
Regards.
From my experience on my phone, BLN does NOT drain the battery when there are no notifications blinking.
Phones enters deepsleep and stays there.

1: see above, it's not
2: when the LEDs are on constantly-on / nonblinking (=static) this timeout controlls when they will go OFF again - as long as the LEDs are on it drains the battery more, so set this to a sensible value to allow the phone to go back to deepsleep
3: if disabled BLN does it's job 24h a day, if enabled you can set times when BLN should NOT do any LED notifications, for whatever reasons you might have.
I presume that there is no way to use BLN with an unmoded galaxy 2?

You need a custom kernel that supports BLN.

CM9 ICS battery life saving's tips with Advanced CMSettings.apk

Hello to everyone.
I know that there are some similar threads in this forum, but no one is strictly related to the CM9 alpha IML74K.
I know as well that this could be part of the CM9 user discussion thread, but I'd like to share the best settings to get a good battery life with our S2 in a clean thread.
So, please:
no trolls, no dumb questions.
Just share your own experience (with a battery screenshot should be better).
Thanks a lot.
Here we go:
Developer options:
Debug usb off
Allow mock locations off
Force GPU rendering off
Windows animation scale off
Transition animation scale off
Don't keep activities on
Background process limit on
Kill app back button on
Display:
Automatic brightness off (I'm using Brightness Level widget)
Black wallpaper (search for solid black.png from wikipedia)
Sleep after 1 minute of inactivity.
Pulse notification light off.
Trebuchet options:
Scroll wallpaper off
Sync settings:
Google account
Sync calendar on
Sync Contacts on
Sync Gmail on
Whattsapp account:
Sync Contacts on
Sound Settings:
Touch sounds off
Screen lock sounds off
Vibrate on touch off
Location services:
Google's location service on
Location & Google search on
(Gps satellites on only when using Sygic or Maps)
Date and time:
Automatic date & time off
Automatic time zone off
CyanogenMod Settings app v1.0:
Interface Settings/Expanded view widget
Toggle 2G/3G checked
Toggle Mobile data checked
For a quick switch to 2G mode and save more battery.
Testing "twek levels and filtering" in automatic backlight settings.
With Titanium Backup:
Frozen all live wallpapers, tts services and uninstalled Gtalk and mail.
P.S. Be careful, you need debug usb on when using Titanium Backup
Data on all the day. I turn it off when I go to bed.
Wireless on when I'm home and need to use dropbox or download a big file from my Gmail account.
I'm using CM9 01062012 (I know, there's a new one, but I've reached a very stable daily rom, no FC, no random reboots, fast and smooth).
Modem XXKL1
Now my battery lasts two days.
Well, when my girlfriend tells me stories about her life, it lasts one day and a half.
Important:
I've uninstalled Facebook app which was causing a battery drain. I'm using the mobile web page instead and I've to tell that it is faster.
Other apps installed:
Twitter, Maps, Sygic, Whattsapp, Beatiful widgets (with manual weather update), Xda premium, ...
2012-01-14 Added CyanogenMod Settings Apk v1.0 (from SGS forums)
How to install:
Download it to your internal SD card
Enter into Recovery mode;
Wipe cache;
Advanced settings, wipe dalvik cache;
Flash zip from Sdcard,
Choose CMSettings.zip and flash it.
Reboot system
2011-01-18 Update:
I've been trying few modems and I've found the best one for me: (Vodafone Spain, data on almost all the time, good signal quality, great battery life)
NEKD5 Modem Zip package.
Flash from recovery. Follow cmsettings instructions.
Nice post. Going to try some your suggestions.
I'm sure loads of other xdaers are going find this useful too.
So many posts in the cm9 discussion thread about battery life and how to achieve optimum performance good to have a thread about it.
Big props

Apparently its a bug. It makes the OS look like its working over time but actually it won't be. Its somewhere in the cm discussion thread if you want to see the posts about it. As far as aware its not fixed yet with any of the builds.

The same here. But I've noticed that using Fastreboot app, it seems to kill/restart stuck apps/processes.
Anyway, rebooting the system before the night helps a lot.
Unless you're not a modern vampire...
Agree with others - excellent thread. There seem to be so many battery challenges with CM9 that a separate thread will lessen clutter in the discussion thread.
I've tried a number of your settings and have also flashed the KL1 modem. I had high hopes for KP4 at first, but it seems to have slipped back into old habits!
Has anyone looked into the FB-app? Why its causing battery problems?

The app and the process are still running after you close them.
I have tried to logout, but it's still there. I think the process keeps going for notifications and photo uploading.
I've tried to kill it, but it comes back after few seconds.
Finally I gave up and used the mobile web page.

But that isn't related to CM9, i had the same issues on gingerbread.
Yes, sir.
I knew it.
But it seems to me that Facebook app is eating more battery on ICS.
Checked my battery info and found out FB app percentage was 15% in 6 hours and I've used it just to read few messages. Then I've logged out.
I could be wrong, but I think it needs an update to control battery drain.
Indeed. I'll bet there are a host of apps that will need subtle tweaks and optimisations for ICS. Another reason not to expect too much from CM9 in terms of performance as yet...although access to kernal sources is obviously the big one!
CM settings
Trying right now CyanogenMod Settings app.
Flashable zip from recovery. The apk goes to /system.
It comes from GTi9000 forum and as I can see, it works perfectly on my S2.
It doesn't have so many options, but few are very important.
Let's have a look...
I'd be very interested on your feedback on this app.
On a different subject, I seem to have my battery back behaving reasonably well again with KP1 modem. In my tons of testing it seems like Nova Launcher - as much as I like it - is a significant contributor to my battery drain issues.
This could be because I have installed a bunch more stuff on Nova than I have with Trebuchet, so my next tactic is to gradually reintroduce some of my favourite widgets to Trebuchet to see if one of them suddenly starts killing my battery.
On the down side it may mean that I can't use one of my widgets for a while but on the plus side it may eliminate Nova as a battery drain meaning that I can go back to using it.
Have you tried FBM for facebook?
Basically the same look as the facebook app. But supposedly a lot cleaner!

As I said before, don't expect a very useful app. It's the 1.0 version, and hopefully it will be a great app. But for now I've tried only some settings in the automatic backlight and modified the notification power widget.
At the moment, that's all we have. Anyway, give it a try, if you'd like.
Screenshots added in the first post.
Anyone able to disable button's backlight? Its still on even though i set it to "0" in the custom settings..
Another thing,is it possible to the haptic feedback tweaks like in cm7 settings?
Back from some modem testings, I'd like to say that NEKD5 has surprised me.
Never loosing data at all, best battery life and no problem with sms and sync.
Here you've got it.

+1
Not working
But I think had the same problem under gingerbread till the devs optimized the kernel...
What can be the cause of not having cm settings working correctly? I only have tabs like these:
Thanks in advance!
