[Q] Data speed on T-Mo and and AT&T - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What kind of data speeds can one get on T-Mobile? How is speed affected by T-Mobile spectrum re-farming ?
What about AT&T?

Is it possible to roam under at&t and get 3g?

as title says, I got the unlock code from t-mo for the G1, if I roam under at&t would I be able to get on their 3g network? this edge stuff sucks.
I don't think so. T-Mobile and AT&T own different spectrums of 3G, with AT$T's being a little faster. I don't think they are compatible.
No it is impossible two different types of bands.
It is possible to get onto Tmo's 3G network while roaming. I know because last month I had to pay extra on my AT&T bill for forgetting to turn off data roaming.

Technical Questions

1. Why does CDMA 3g max out around 2.2 Mb/s while GSM 3g can be so much more?
4.4 Mb/s on VZW's strong CDMA network would be the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I have a Dinc2 that has an unlocked SIM. I can only get Edge/2G while in Canada using a local SIM card. I have set up the APNs.
2. Is this limitation in my phone, or do they have some sort of agreement with VZW to throttle my speeds in North America?
3. What is the max GSM data speeds a VZW world phone can achieve while using the GSM capabilities? I have droped a T-mob sim in here before, but have been limited again to EDGE/2g.
Thank you!
Most GSM bands worldwide are 850/1900 (like AT&T). It's possible that you were on a Canadian provider that utilized AWS bands (1700/2100 like T-Mobile). I doubt your phone is pentaband, which would enable you to use it on any GSM network and get 3G. I highly doubt Verizon would try to throttle you outside their network while on a foreign SIM.
As for speeds, CDMA doesn't have the speed that UMTS/HSDPA does. I'm not entirely sure why. I can get up to 5Mbps on an UMTS network. I'm not as familiar with Verizon's CDMA network. I've only experienced their LTE (which is smoking fast )
Wasn't me!! I didn't do it!

Who's data speeds are faster!!!

Does T-Mobile have faster data speeds than at&t?

AT&T have 4G LTE and 3G HSPA+ 21.1Mbps. So depending on which phone you have will depend on what type of speeds you get.
T-Mobile only have 3G HSPA+ 42Mbps so unless you have a non 4G LTE phone you'll get roughly the same speeds.
It's also location dependant of course. Here is an article summing up the differences in tech with a speed comparison chart at the bottom.

But like i said it depends where you're based as well.
To sum up- 4G LTE on AT&T is faster if you have a LTE compatible phone. However T-Mobiles 3G network should theoretically be slightly faster than AT&T's 3G network if you have a 3G HSPA+ capable handset. I see you have a sensation capable of up to 14.4Mbps. You should not notice that much of a difference between either network with that phone.
Is all this the same for per-paid at&t and tmobile data speeds?

No idea mate. I'm based in the UK so i'm not sure about the speed differences between different data plans. If it's anything like the UK it should be the same but i'd wait until someone who knows the answer posts here before you take my word.
And verizon 4Glte is faster than both at&t and tmobile correct?

It'll be faster than T-Mobile for sure.
But AT&T use 4G LTE as well so you should see similar speeds on both AT&T 4G and Verizon 4G. However Verizon cover more places for 4G than AT&T at the moment. But again it does depend on your location and whether your city is covered by 4G LTE.
If you're looking at just 3G speeds then AT&T & T-Mobile will be faster than verizon by far.

Force Roaming

Since the Nexus 4 is unlocked and will work on at&t or T-Mobile is it possible to force the phone to roam on T-Mobile with an att Sim? The at&t coverage is spotty where I live and I would love to test the T-Mobile hspa+ and signal strength before possibly switching.

you wouldn't have access to Tmobile's HSPA+ speed if you roam. I know I don't get att's HSPA+ network when I roam from Tmobile to At&T. If you want to try it out, you have to go to a Tmobile store and ask for the phone.

AT&T LG G2 unlocked to Tmobile. Can I get HSPA+?

I just bought an AT&T LG G2 plan on unlocking it for Tmobile/metropcs (they merged in my area) Will I be able to get full connections to everything once I unlock the phone for Tmobile network? I'd hate to realize I wont get any data or get very slow data after spending so much money.
Since MetroPCS uses Tmobiles system in my area but also still use their systems can I choose if I want to use a metropcs or a tmobile sim card? Or are they both on GSM towers and so there would be no difference? 4G for MetroPCS is available in my area but so is Tmobile HSPA+ which is better?
Not if you don't have the 1700 AWS band...

not sure what you're saying. 4G is 2100. but other than that if i leave 4G area i wont have any reception at all?
4G uses different bandwidths. Not all carries use the same... Still the same old "GSM/CDMA" scenario, just a bit more relaxed.
