It's a bug, turn on auto brightness(in display settings) if you really wasn't button brightness.

The screen

Is it normal that if I look close enough to the screen I can notice vertical lines all over especially when the screen is black even when it's off, is this an issue or its just how the screen is?

That's the digitizer, it senses touches on the screen. It should be visible on all capacitive touch screen phones, albeit by varied degrees.

I know what a digitizer is I just haven't seen those lines before on my previous smartphones

This phone has the touch sensor built in with the LCD. Probably why it's visible. Also in the sunlight you can see dots on screen about 1/2 inch apart.
Really though who

You need to use a strongish magnet close to the volume down button on the back or front of phone.
Do a search for hall sensor if you want more info
