I'm not sure if it is because I upgraded to CM10.1 or because I had my phone plugged into a charger all night that didn't even charge the phone, but my USB port won't connect to my computer anymore. When I connect it, it says the device malfunctioned. What could be wrong? I feel like it's because the other charger messed it up.

I'm sure this has already been posted but couldn't find it. But I was trying to flash one of the roms that were posted in here with odin3 and when I put the phone in download mode and Hooke it up to the computer I get either device not recognized or device.malfunctioning but mass storage works no problem. I use the cable that came with the phone and used every USB port on the computer. Any suggestions?

Have you installed Samsung Galaxy S drivers?
I had that problem when trying to flash EB13.
From what others have said here (and my personal experiences with trying to flash EB13) the cable the Epic comes with is crap.
When using another cable, I had much more luck in getting Odin/Windows/Samsung Updater to see my phone.
YMMV though, but it worked for me.
I think you should re-install the drivers, and try a USB port on the back of the computer. Usually the ports on the front of the computer aren't the best for these things.

Reboot computer and reboot phone and try it again thats what worked for me in the past
Reinstall the Epic drivers from Samsung. Make sure to use the back ports on the back of your computer that are on the motherboard. These will provide better and cleaner power to your device, also cycle both the computer and the phone and don't plug in the device till after you have went into download mode. This should fix your problem.
Same thing happened to me. I tried using the micro USB cable from my wifes Blackberry. Works great now. Samsung's cables suck

I've installed uninstalled and installed the drivers again. Tried the USB ports in the front and back of the computer. I'll try and buy a new cable and see if that works.
Thanks for all the suggestions

P.S: changing the cables for me didn't work. I just used another computer which was on xp.

I recently reformatted and couldn't get odin to work. I put my phone in debug mode and when I connected it windows ended up installing something else and everything worked after that.

Beats me then. Try a different computer.
Guys I've had this issue and tried everything you guys have and some. Look at the port directly on your phone. there are tiny little copper contacts on the tooth that can get bent.
You will have to use some tweezers to get it back down but look at this before buying a new usb cable as this was my issue

I checked that and didn't find anything bent in the USB port on the phone. Might try new cable and different computer when I have access to both

I have done flashes with thirty to forty percent battery. I don't think odin checks your battery. I would caution against flashing with to low of a battery as your phone can die during a flash.

I plug in on my laptop, and a green light appear on the phone....but phone don't turn on

Make sure your laptop is plugged in & charging as well, otherwise I don't think it will work.
Make sure you have the drivers installed as well. I read in the motorola site somewhere that the computer won't charge unless the drivers are installed. Also it charges much slower than the wall outlet does.

Usr USB 3.0 port if your laptop has one so it supplies more power. USB 3.0 will charge almost as fast as AC.
Beamed in from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium app
Just let it be. it won't turn on if the battery is below a certain level. Let it sit and charge and it will eventually turn on.
Here we go again.. Only the 1,500th time this has come up..
yes.. Have you been flashing ?
And if it stucked on bootloader you will need factory cable...
Or ..
You can buy a charge only cable just like me, from ebay.. Very cheap.. The phone can boot without even battery! That's why it can be charged if you stucked o bootloader!

You returned it because of battery life?. What do you mean?.
I tought you returned the phone because of the locked bootloader and because its a bit easy to brick it.

Ahaa I didnt read that.. maybe its the usb port of the computer also, happens a lot when im busy with my laptop. also the cable as you say.
Weird my phone is going through the same thing after flashing AOKP build 31, tried several USB cables and computers..
Thought my phone broke..
I never have enabled fast charge..
Wonder what could be the issue?
I also flashed back to stock 2.3.3 but still can't mount USB.

Ok good news and weird finding. Accidentally hit fast charge switching tabs in ns tools. I ended up in the same boat as you guys. I opened ns tools and toggled it back on. Plugged USB and it worked. problem is it was showing as on so I toggled off reconnected and it gave me the mount USB and adb prompts. Scary part is it persist for you guys on a stock flash. That's not good. Luckily mines back if you hit the button toggle it again if you didn't yet don't! !

Got it fixed, what i did was flash AOKP build 31 again and flash my favorite kernel (Trinity) booted the OS and in Rom control/start up tweaks and enable SD boost..then pull battery...
Boot the phone up and connect to CPU and it worked.
I knew it wasn't the cable because i tried with 5 other cables..

Usually the usb connector at nexus s full of dirt or fungi...
Using a toothbrush and hand sanitizer to scrub ni..
Many user have this kind of problem beside technical error from kernel or rom..

At least in my case it wasn't that, i keep my phone clean (air duster), when i had my issue i cleaned it again just in case and it would persist...
It must of been i toggled fast charge by mistake and reflashed another kernel without ticking it off..that's the only thing i could think of..

It's weird, it only charges when It's off. But, when on it acts like It's not connected to the charger. I've tried factory resetting. It also won't connect to my computer, simply because it won't charge. I've searched here and I haven't seen a problem like it. I can still charge it when It's off.

Hi ,
Do you charge it by OEM charging cable ? If so , you should use another cable and try charging by new one.Unfortunately , the OEM cable has problem with charging the device.
More info please. Are you rooted? What ROM/Kernel? Did you make any changes lately? When was the last time it worked right?

I apologize in advance if this has been asked before. I just got my note 3 today its MJ7 and Kingo just hangs on connecting forever it for 10...20...30 minutes. I have disabled anti virus I have enabled usb debugging set screen timeout to 10 minutes and nothing is working. I even unistalled the drivers reinstalled them and even let the Kingo app install. Should I just update to the newest and try like that?
Much help appreciated

You can use any micro usb cable. It doesn't have to be the 3.0 cable. A standard micro usb cable fits in the right side of the charging port.
