Does fotakill.apk from the e4gt stop otas on this phone? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I "might" upgrade to this phone in the next couple of weeks. Just wondering about it.

Rumor: All 3g xooms will get 3.1 update by Friday 3/13 EST

I just got this from another forum:
"just got off the phone with Verizon... all 3g versions will get the 3.1 update by midnight EST Friday."
Like the title says: just a rumor. I know nothing else. But it sets my mind at ease to know that I won't have to wait weeks. I'll stop doing the hourly update thing and just let it happen (OK, I might do it again, but not as often...). Can't wait to have resizable widgets and mouse support!
Google are doing a few things right in following apples lead when it comes to announcing updates and releasing updates on the same day, but as someone who lined up on launch day for my Xoom, and who still hasn't got an update it is still terribly frustrating...
Yes their are options for people who just cannot wait, and I understand that OTA updarea have to be managed to for load/ capacity reasons but I almost think the best solution is an either or solution. OTA update or for those that can't wait then an official tethered update....
I wanted to be able to go to work today with an updated Zoom, and stick the update in the apple fan boys eye

oh, man. i thought i am obsessed with my xoom
Do anyone know about the European 3G update?
I guess "3G" for Verizon is not WCDMA, its EVDO.
As someone who also purchase their xoom on launch day and has yet to receive the update, I am equally as frustrated. The load/capacity argument however seems weak with the small number of xooms sold to date. If they can't support that number...

frustrated here also. Got mine 9am the first day they had them available. No update yet for me this morning. Tried setting date ahead, it did check but nothing new.
Just curious, has anyone with a deactivated 3G Xoom actually received the OTA?
Some postings across several forums refer to the fact they only got the OTA after they activated their service with Verizon.
It seems suspect to me that that would be the case since any deactivated device I had with Verizon still received updates through WiFi (my OG droid and the last update (3.0.1) for the Xoom as examples).

I haven't received one yet. But if I do I'll post on here. Because I bought mines from a local shop brand new and never activated any 3G.

Milestone X on C Spire

Hey everyone!
I'm from over on the HTC Hero forums and looking for an upgrade in the near future. I'm currently on C Spire and am not particularly interested in the iPhone 4s or Galaxy Showcase, so this leaves the Milestone X as the main contender for me. Just a few questions come to mind:
1. I noticed there was a recent OTA Gingerbread release, and there may be an issue getting root with it. Is this still a problem or did the issue get resolved?
2. Probably the most important: Would you really recommend the phone as an upgrade or consider something on another carrier with all the new dual core and likely soon to be quad core phones? My main selling point is that the Milestone X is currently free with a 2 year agreement and I wouldn't have to switch carriers.
My only other consideration is to go with the Amaze 4G on T-Mobile (ATT is too expensive and has horrendous customer service, Verizon is too expensive, and Sprint has pretty lousy coverage in MS). The Amaze is also the only phone in their current lineup besides the GS2 which supports their 42+ mbps band.
Anyways, thanks for the read and I hope to hear from you guys soon.
Milestone X is a great phone, you are wise to avoid the showcase.
to answer your questions:
1. Yes there is an update, yes it can be rooted very easily. DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su.zip
2. well i already answered that one... The milestone x is hands down the best phone at cspire currently.
Thanks for the reply! I just may consider picking up one soon. How's the battery life on it with CM7/Liberty?
i haven't loaded a new rom so i can't say how the battery life is on those roms, but i can tell you that the stock 2.3.5 is very smooth, snappy and the battery life is superior to my old hero. (just got my milestoneX 2 weeks ago, figures that they would make them free now).
EDIT: correction, 2.3.5 is not what comes preloaded. but there is an OTA update ready for download once you get it. only peice of advice i can give you if you want the ota is don't install cwm before you install the OTA.
Awesome! I just picked mine up yesterday and after the ota, I'm really pleased with performance and battery life. I'll likely root it soon to do away with the junk preinstalled applications.

fast and simple.
Not to hijack the thread, but my wife and I both traded in our CSpire Heros for the Milestone X yesterday. They have 2.2.2 on them, and neither will get the OTA update. It just keeps saying they are up to date. Any clue why this could be happening?

I'm having the same issue with my 2nd Milestone X that I just picked up. I contacted support, and they suggested to bring it into a store to install it there. If updating the phone to 2.3 doesn't fix its wifi problems, though, I'll likely be switching it out for another one.
My dad picked up another Milestone today for himself and is having the same issue with the update. The customer service person I spoke to last night told me that it's likely because the OTA update is being released in a "staggered fashion" to "prevent serve overload." I get the concept, but the update has been out for a month now, and nobody else was having any problem getting it until recently, from what I can tell.
If you have any luck getting them to do the upgrade in the store, let me know. The person I spoke to said they charge $15 to do an upgrade in-store, though, which I refuse to pay just because their normal upgrade method is broken.

try downloading this and rename it update.zip, place it in the root of your sd-card, boot stock recovery and select the update.zip from the sdcard. i have been told that it will work. it is the ota download from cspire.

I went into the store and informed them that the phone wasn't receiving the update, they swapped mine with one that had 2.3 preinstalled, no hassle and no restocking fee. I would definitely contest the fee as much as possible, especially when they aren't providing any other way to officially update the phone other than over the air.

Thanks for the tip. Fortunately I won't be needing it, as the OTA update finally worked for me a couple of hours ago. Now I just have to reroot and I'm good to go!

I had the same issue. Got the Milestone X in September when it was still Cellular South. Shortly after they switched to CSpire Wireless. Here comes December and I do not have the OTA update still. Kept checking and checking, not OTA and no option through CSpire to just manually download it to PC to update myself. So tried root and DL'ing the file mentioned and renaming update.zip and install via Bootstraper, still a no go. After a few factory resets, BOOM, "you have an update available" and just my luck, will download but not install properly w/ bootstrapper interfering. Ok, remove bootstrap....nope, no work. Said screw it, went to CSpire hoping to just get another one, guy behind counter instantly pulled up bootstrapper and said, If you think you can fix it, try, or else you'll have to buy another one, told him damn straight I'll fix it myself, grabbed my phone and left. Got home, followed SBF guide, downloaded OTA and now I'm a happy camper.

yet another update over Kies for India--LF2

never seen this happen ever before----this is the second firmware update within a week and that after the phone itself was released barely a month ago.

D801/TMO: still no 5.x OTA

I am actually reasonably happy with stock LG.. but haven't gotten the OTA yet (TMO in the US).. I did get this phone from ebay (the $200 sales over the past few months)... every indication is that the phone was legit.. came loaded with all the expected TMO apps...
but here I am several weeks after the OTA was released.. and no indication of an update for me.
Would prefer to use the OTA so I don't lose my data.
Am I at the point where I should conclude some intervention is needed to get the update?
Does the com.android.framework trick work on the G2?
thanks,
Mike
I bought d801 on ebay just like you at around $200. Got OTA 3 days ago, so i guess it will get to you anytime soon.

6.0.1 in February...

According to Pocket-Lint, Android 6.0 update is set to land on the Note 4 next month.
Of course.... who knows when VZW will acquiesce. Can't wait to move up from KK to a decents OS. :good:
Knowing Verizon they will be the last ones to release it. I'm betting we don't see it until at least April or may.
I doubt it will land on our devices in February. The international Note 4 will be getting it in February however.

of 2017, yeah. April or may? lmao not happening this year man. took 9 months for them just to get out 5.1 lol
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note 4
If you recall, last year our Lollipop update came after some carriers updated the GS4, GS5 and the Note 3. That stupid virtual reality porn headset thing (oh, you can use it for stuff other than porn??) delayed our update.
Let's hope something comes up and delays it for the Note 5 and the GS6. LOL
I'm not going to hold my breath.
Me neither. They just released 5.1.1. It'll be months and months before they can be bothered to release marshmallow.

I still don't even have 5.1.1 and yet it was officially released from Verizon. I'm heavily considering going to a Nexus 6P or waiting to see what the next Nexus phone is in 2016. I love my Note, and will seriously miss the S Pen and note taking capability but I really hate how much unnecessary control Verizon has over the phone I own.
Samsung has delayed their Marshmallow upgrades by two months. Woohoo! I'm assuming the update will roll out the week after my last Edge payment when I switch phones. :eyeroll:
Then again, maybe that is a blessing. Usually the last update they give to a device is the one where they royally screw up the software to the point that you want a new phone anyhow.

I got the Note 4 for the large screen and the S Pen. It was only after using it a few times, I realized that my handwriting is terrible, I have no artistic talents at all, and the S Pen makes each of these more apparent. I haven't removed it from it's little home inside the phone since. The large screen is nice, though my screen has all sorts of quality control issues.
I too would like my next phone to NOT be tied to Verizon. I was fortunate in that I was able to get back to 4.4.4 when I realized what a train wreck 5.01 was, but it annoys me to no end that they let people sit with that on their phones for six month while trying to blame user habits for all of the issues with battery life and crashing. Total scumbag corporation move. I would leave Verizon if I could, but they're the only game in town here. Just the other day, I was explaining to my wife that my main reason for not liking this phone is that I've had it for a year and three months, and there hasn't been a useful update to it. The only updates for it have been awful.
My contract is up in October, and I'll be looking at Nexus and whatever they have at that point. Either that, or some other phone that will allow some control over what's on it.
I haven't attempted to update yet. I'm still on 4.4.4. I'm not going to update until I'm 100% sure that my phone will end up on 5.1.1. Even better if a safe upgrade path is created at some point.
I've upgraded to 5.1.1 and have not had any issues whatsoever. One thing I do though is perform a full factory reset after a major upgrade. Never had issues by doing this. I make sure my important stuff is backed up to SD card or Google drive. All apps auto install when prompted.

You might have answered this with saying Verizon is the only game in town but have you looked into Project Fi? It runs on Nexus devices and uses Sprint/TMo, I get a pretty nice employee plan with Verizon currently or I would gladly make the switch to Fi, a lot of friends back home in Michigan have and they say the service is awesome.
Still no 5.1.1 btw lol

I'm not sure if that's available where I am. I'd have to look in to it. I too get a decent discount on Verizon through my employer, and I'm stuck on this phone until the end of October. After that, I'll do my usual looking at all of the options, to find the best one. Unfortunately, cell phone providers aren't that good where I live. None of them are as good as Verizon was when I lived in the Chicago area a few years back.
Last night after talking to Verizon tech support again about not having the 5.1.1 update, I factory reset my phone after backing it up, and once I had it restored I checked for the update, it was there. In case anyone still wants it that doesn't have it, give that a try. Samsung Kies worked well for my backup/restore.
