[Q] Nexus 7 gpu oc - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, and sory for my poor english.
I am new at this comunity, and want to ask some questions about de gpu oc of this device.
What is your gpu frequency?
And your voltage?
My example: 600mhz clock, 1237 voltage.
I am using m-kernel because of the voltage control that his kernel provide, anybody use other kernel and know the gpu voltages?
Thx for all!

446 MHz and 1150 on my Nexus 7. Been tried with 520, 484 but doesn't notice much improve over 416 or 446 so I'm stick with 446 seem good balance between performance and power saving for me.
Try Motley if you want a bit more fps like 4-10 constantly on Quadrant at same GPU speed of any others but M-kernel still have better overall performance (if you like to play with setting) IMO.

Adreno 200 GPU Overclock

Hi, I have a question!
I'm absolutely happy with my HD2 but I'd like something that the performance increases.
Is there a possibility to overclock the GPU? Cpu is yes to either 1.2 GHz or 1.5 GHz but the power play in is not very noticeable so I would appreciate if you could overclock the gpu order to get more performance out there.!
know her as a possibility?
would answer me happy!
there is an app on the market that allows for GPU overclocking , i didnt use it personally just search overclock in the market and look at the different results . I have no problem with the performance of CPU overclocking , i always thought the CPU was the one in charge of graphics rendering .
Isn't it SOC? As you overclock cpu gpu is overclocked also?

Good point . But couldn't that lead to more problems ? Too high of gpu could cause failure in stability but the CPU can handle the high oc ?

yea i really wouldnt recommend touching that, as far i remember we are already running diff os's that stretch are gpu and cpu with hacks and kernels etc....

GPU overclock kernel for ICS

If the SGX540 in P1000 can be overclocked to 370MHz, the performance of it can be highly improved like in Overcome Kernel.
(Can be showed in Quadrant Standard Edition. When it is in 370 MHz, the fps in the graphic animation of DNA can be promoted to 60fps. And got no lagging in anything. The speed(smoothness is nearly reached S2 which is official 2.3.6)
But however, it doesn't seem that any ICS supporting kernel can set the clock of GPU.
I am sorry that my English is not good enough to represent my idea, but I hope you can get what I am talking about.
And the most reason I want it to be real is that the potential of P1000 is quite big and in fact it is quite good!
PS Antutu SetCPU app can set GPU clock in Overcome Kernel.
Dang, I never knew that our GPU can be overclocked ^^
since this tab is getting old, maybe its time to overclock the gpu also?
Personally I'm agree with this
Probs a little off topic, (also to bump this up a bit)
But the Gnex which uses the same GPU can be overclocked to 512Mhz (Stock is 300 something I think), improvement seems noticeable in apps and in nenamark, you go from 27-28ish FPS to 31-32.
It would really help the tab, it seems to show age now (which makes me lust over a 7.7......)
What I knew is the potential of SGX540 in GNexus and GT are different.
GT one is 200MHz and GNexus one is 374MHz.
In Overcome Kernel w/ GT, the clock of SGX540 can be set to 370~38X Mhz w/ no crush but when it is 400MHz , the machine is seemed to be lagged.
The benchmark in Overcome 4.1 plus Overcome Kernel 4.0 can be promoted over the GT 7.7 (of course the mark doesn't represent the real using experience but let's just look at the 3D mark)

Haha, yea I know they have different potentials Just that I thought I'd let you guys know how much better overclocking the GPU would be.
I think its worth it, there is little impact on battery life, but the improvements in apps and usage are noticeable.

I think the battery usage for extra cost of GPU is not as high as CPU.
It is being a great difference if we compared the overclocking for either CPU and GPU.
The consumption of GPU is low and it won't make the device hot as CPU overclocking.
And the temperature can keep around 35 to 36 degree Celsius under a room temperature 20 Degree Celsius.
The result screenshot I have posted is undergoing CPU overclocked (1.4GHz) plus GPU overclocked(370MHz) w/ overcome kernel and rom.
Success!!!

Hello, i have been trying to implement LiveOC into humberos's kernel and it is a success
LiveOC
This allows us to modify the bus speed which increase both the cpu and gpu clock at the same time using an app called NStools
i have only been using this for a day now and it seems to be working very well
please report back any bugs thank you,
BTW i will post the settings i have used in NStools and this kernel is for the latest MTD build
Link: http://www.4shared.com/file/216rF_WJ/boot.html?
My settings:
Governor: smartassV2
min CPU freq: 200MHz (240MHz after applying OC Value)
Max CPU freq: 1000MHz (1200MHz after applying OC Value)
OC target low: 200MHz
OC target high: 1000MHz
OC Value: 120%

I'll give that a try when I get home (or maybe a few days later). So which ICS rom did you try this on?
EDIT: In terms of quadrant (which I know can be a bit volatile... but a nice way/quick way to see differences), ICS gets a lower mem score :< 3d is slightly lower, 2d is about double (I suspect thats forcing 2d rendering). This is comparing the gtab score in quadrant, I haven't used GB on my tab for a longgg time...)

thanks for the information
as a newbie, i just thought another aokp by stimpz0r is identical
there is a strange point which is the fc of the camera while the shutter sound is closed, but it works while enabling the shutter sound
It is a great rom and thank you for your great work

[Q] Kernel/Tool with CPU+GPU clock profiles?

Hi!
I'm looking for a kernel that supports both CPU+GPU over/under-clocking.
And more importantly, I need a tool which also lets me create easily appliable profiles for both clocks.
ATM, I'm using franco.kernel R142, with his tool. It supports profiles, but only for CPU clocks.
Thanks!

BTW, which kernel have you had the most luck with?
Also, Trickster mod does not seem to have GPU clock speeds in profiles.

Last time I checked the GPU option is available in Franco's kernel updater app. It's in "Frequencies/Voltages"

Yes, I know it is. But...
Caveat emptor :
1. You can only underclock. No overclock.
2. You can't set GPU clocks as part of the Power Profiles.
Any suggestions?

I don't think it's a good idea to overclock the GPU. The adreno 320 GPU is quite efficient and delivers great performance in it's default settings.
May I ask why do you want to over clock it?

Hahaha... Only for novelty purposes, and the heck of it... I haven't noticed lag in anything actually.
In fact, I tried running MC4 and NFS MW at the CPU at 1.1 GHz, with 400 MHz GPU - no lag. 1.5 GHz is overkill, IMO.
Mainly I need underclock. Which franco supports. BUT, I simply need profiles.
I want to set up lower GPU clocks for lower CPU clocks, for just internet browsing and stuff.
And, vice versa for gaming. If not over-clock, just default GPU clock speeds for gaming.
Any ideas/apps?

benchmark lovers

while I realize that many people hate benchmarks the truth in my humble opinion as a windows hacker and android enthusiast is that benchmarks, run properly, can tell you a whole lot. there is some variances but usually that is from screen brightness settings, running at different core temps, background apps, widgets, and waving the accelerometer around like you just don't care lol. and you can say all you want to synthetic means nothing but the fact is even manufacturer's use benchmarks in their testing of new chips as well. just look at the current benchmarks from sd 600 vs sd 800 from qualcom. so I have decided to carefully benchmark every kernel myself to find what gives ME the best user expieriance. maybe it will help the dev's, maybe not. maybe it will help you, maybe you hate my dog and want to skin my cat.
a benchmark can tell you how well the kernel makes use of the hardware so for testing purposes I have used stock rom on all tests. I have set up my cold box for testing so that the cpu and gpu do not suffer and return quickly to normal and have set brightness at 50. testing is done stationary against the back of the cold box proped so that cool air flows over the systemboard. for testing purposes there is only the stock clock widget and micro cpu monitor and a few battery temp/sytem stats apps running. after each benchmark the tablet memory was swept. all benchmarks were run 3 times and the highest score given is used here unless there was a wild varient and then it was tracked down and all benches ran again. after contemplating it i ran some of these plugged up to the ac on my cold box and sometimes i forgot to plug it up. and some using debugging but i honestly doubt that had an effect. so at any rate my benches will probably be a little lower than yours on all these kernels as im running stuff to keep me informed in the background
im also not really comparing custom kernels to one another but I do to stock kernel, every last one of them are great and offer a lot of features you cant get with stock. all offer performance above stock if the proper settings are used and the overclocks are not to extreme for the framework. they are all also still works in progress so I think they will improve with the developers attention as time goes by. i started with stock kernel and ran antutu, quadrant, velimo, 3d mark ice storm, 3d mark ice storm extreme, basemark x, gfxbench 2.7.0 t-rex hd onscreen, gfx 2.7 egypt hd onscreen
stock kernel
stock ran well and i liked it, but i hated having to long press wifi to toggle and short press takes you to settings, wtf google?
edit.... so at any rate my benches will probably be a little lower than yours on all these kernels as im running stuff to keep me informed in the background
whatever flo 002 kernel
the kernel ran smooth and i liked it. i have the same complaints about it as i do stock. wtf google?
so on this kernel as you can see it functioned better than stock on every single benchmark. some were close but just a little better is...well...better.
jassy release 5 kernel
this kernel is set up to use an external kernel control app. it will not function worth a hill of beans without it in my testing. and even further than that it seems to not like trickster mod for me as it bench's higher with faux kernel control app paid version. real world expierance is good. fauxclock is set to 1.89 ghz CPU OC. cpu ondemand governor. snake charmer and mpdecision on. intelithermal at 60 and 80 respectfully. gpu at 487. gpu simple governor. fiops i/o at 512 read ahead. as you can see in cpu and gpu performance it face smashes stock kernel then kicks it while its down and makes it cry for momma. i dont know what the dude pasted into this kernel but i like it. jassy worked hard so we could have a full featured kernel that works well. release 6 = win, release 5 o yeah baby performance even ondemand. i could still kick this to performance governor lol
elementalx 0.7 kernel
settings with no external kernel control app.
1988 cpu overclock on each core. 487 gpu overclock. simple gpu governor. stock bus. stock voltage. no stw, dtw. the kernel ran well in real world performance. STW and DTW are awsome features by the way and i really like this kernel but didnt install them for testing purposes, one less potential irritation. as you can see it actually lost a bit from stock performance though in every benchmark except basemarkx and gfxbench 2.7 t rex. that tells me there is a problem with cpu performance in this kernel. also look at the cpu vs gpu in antutu vs stock kernel. so what i like this kernel and with lower clocks, dude it rocks. stw and dtw are wins.
elementalx 0.7
settings with no external control app.
1890 cpu overclock on each core. 487 gpu overclock. ondemand governor. stock bus.stock voltage. no stw, no dtw. again the kernel ran well in real world performance but as you can see it took a serious hit in performance at this cpu clock setting. the gpu features continue to score high though
elementalx 0.7 kernel
settings with no external kernel control app.
1728 cpu overclock on each core. 487 gpu overclock. ondemand governor. stock bus. stock voltage. no stw, dtw.
as usual really nice running and here the voltage values are more sane i guess. bested stock in every bench. i figure 1.9 ish before the poo poo hits the fan and performance benches go south rather than north. that seems about the same for the other kernels ive tested too. flar2 really has a winning kernel here with stw and dtw. highly recommend giving it a try
3flo v4 kernel
not testing this one yet as my boy doesn't even have the nexus 7 2013 but I tell ya, I got a good feeling about him. seems dedicated and excited.
Edit...he just got a mpdecision kernel booting and posting good scores but has a cores on touch problem for me. Very beta but it shows that even without a device you can build. Still got a good feeling about this one.
faux123 flo jb 4.3 001 kernel ulta
not coming. I can boot it and even run at highest settings but antutu ehh and im tired lol. maybe ill do it if the overclock structures are changed in some way but ehh not interested in this high on this chip.
faux123 flo jb 4.3 001 ES
settings. faux 123 kernel control paid version. 1.512 ghzcpu. mpdecision off. cpu governor ondemand. snake charmer on. stock voltages. intelli thermal 60 and 80. gpu 400 and ondemand. fiops I/o 512 read ahead.
so here you can see again the same slight loss in gpu performance which lead to slightly lower scores than stock. cool kernel though and I do like intelli thermal so
faux123 flo jb 4.3 001 kernel mainline
settings in faux123 kernel control app paid version. 1.83 cpu OC. CPU Governor ondemand. intelliplug. mpdecision off. eco modeoff. snake charmer on. stock voltages. intelli thermal 60 and 80. gpu 400. gpu governor ondemand. fiops I/o 512 read ahead.
so I found the kernel smooth in real world. I looked for my sweet spot and found it around 1.836-1.89 cpu. above that didn't really work out well for me. so in this great kernel the cpu benchmarks higher than stock but for one reason or other the gpu seems to bench lower than stock. all in all a great kernel and omg I love the idea of eco mode and I think with proper cpu governor and eco this kernel would rock some battery butt.

MTK devices overclock possible MT6582 successfully overclocked !

Hi guys I'm new on xda and I'm really sorry if I post this thread in the wrong place.
I found a method last year with I think we can overclock/underclock our MTK devices. No custom kernel or ROM is required but the problem is that the CPU can't be overclocked.Only the GPU and other components like RAM and internal memory.
All you need to do is to install a MTK Engineering app from Google play store.
After that go to /hardware testing/DE-sense/PLLs - you will get to a menu with some different PLLs
ARM PLL - is CPU ( but can't be overclocked )
MM PLL - is the GPU ( it's safe to OC )
I don't know about other PLLs , I don't think is safe to OC them and you will not get any boost in performance.
There are the default PLLs values for my MT6582 device ( all clock speeds are in khz )
ARM PLL=1092000
MM PLL=500500 max / 266000 min
MSDC PLL=416000
MAIN PLL=1092000
VENC PLL=295750
UNIVI PLL=1248000
The best OC values for GPU are 315 MHz minimum frequency and 518 MHz maximum frequency, the minimum possible underclock frequency is 245 MHz minimum and 450 MHz maximum
From my tests I got a 10-15 fps boost in PSP emulators and 5-10 fps boost in 3D games (real racing 3,asphalt 8,modern combat 4) and benchmarks (antutu 5,gfx bench)
Here are the default clock frequencys for MT6589
ARM PLL=1508000 max / 754000 min
MAIN PLL=884000 max / 500000 min
MM PLL=338000 max / 286000 min
UNIV PLL=624000
MSDC PLL=208000
Here is the YouTube link, check it if you haven't understand this tutorial : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wY_i3u_Wu4w
Anyway I need an expert opinion to tell me what the other components are.
Attention !
- overclock can harm your hardware
- please make sure that you can remove your phone's battery because if you put a wrong value your screen can get stuck ! But if you are lucky your device will reboot
- make sure your device is rooted and you know your default clock speeds
- Do not try to OC any other components, only GPU is safe to OC
- I'm not responsible for any damage to your phone
I can't post this thread elsewhere because I'm not allowed even if I have more than 10 posts, admins please if you find this useful move it to a good location
very interesting. i want to try this on my unite3 lollipop with SoC 6582. but before that i want to ascertain default values for MMPL which i could not find when opened in engineeing mode. will you pls reply how to find default values.

Sorry for so late response but I don't have a mediatek phone anymore. Anyway so no you can't see what are the defualt values in mmpl but you have to find out your gpu clock speeds ( the maximum freq like 600 mhz and the minimum one, which the gpu idles at like 120 or 200 mhz). If you say that you have a mt6582 phone your maximum freq should be 500 MHz and you could try a 533 MHz overclock. Only big problem at this gpu trick is that we can't change the voltage also,so an stable oc will be very small. I reccomend to oc that idle freq which I don't know why this mali 400 uses it even in games making them lag. So try to oc that 200 MHz to 300 MHz,but don't go higher because the kernel will think that you want to change the max 500 MHz freq so the performance will get worse. First set something like 303000 and after 515000.These are some ideal valuse which I've tested by myself. Sorry for my bad english and greetings from Romania.
how about mt6750?
Wont work on my nokia 3 TA-1032
Sorry, this is a late reply but i dont know why it says "Fail to enter De-Sense PLLs module" when i tap PLLs.
There is no de sense pill option in mtkengineering mode on my device mt6761 android 8.1
