[Q] Ubuntu Desktop on N10? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says, did anybody get ubuntu desktop working on N10?
I found this link where they explain how to do it for the N7:
ubuntu dot com/Nexus7/Installation#Manually_Installing_Ubuntu_13.04_on_Nexus_7
Will it work in our tablet? Is there any risk if I try to follow the same steps?
Thanks!
PD:Cannot post links, sorry

Those instructions won't work. That particular build of Ubuntu works specifically for the Nexus 7 (and with some hacking, possibly other Tegra 3 devices). It won't "just work" on our Exynos 5 chip.
Closest thing would be Ubuntu Touch, and then somehow installing a desktop environment to it.

I think these are the correct instructions.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Install
I would be interested if anybody got it working.

Any way to get the full desktop ubuntu running on this tablet?

There's an app called Compete Linux Installer, it installs complete Linux Distro, I use Fedora on it, pretty good and useful

Yesterday I tried downloading the full Ubuntu 12.04 zip three time from different devices. Each time the file had some corruption and would result in the issue you described. I then tried the small image with LXDE desktop and it worked per the instructions.
I used this configuration:
Desktop: 1280x800 if you use an expanded desktop or 1280x720 if not
Changed the panel bar to 48px
Changed system font to 13 then applied
Changed each default window font size 10->13 Bold and 8->12 bold
The Vnc session was set to zoom (zoom three time to fill screen)
Try more than one input method as I did not like the documentation's recommendation. Some input settings will not work at all.
I use LMT/PIE and found that it was very useful in combinations with the Ubuntu desktop.

Alright, I'll give that a try later today.

[Q] Ubuntu/Meego/Debian/Other Linux on Desire Z?

Well?
I don't actually have a Z (yet), but I'm sure that someone will like this, and I'll use it (if there) when I get mine.
Perhaps a real dual-boot, but even just a chroot with the keyboard would be good.
Also - off topic but still - if the Z (or any other Ubuntu booting device) got USB Host, would it be useable in the other system? That would ROCK! Like using adb on your phone to mess with another phone.
Ooh. Confused maself there
I'm assuming you've seen the guides for booting debian as a virtual machine & then using VNC server to get the GUI?

Yeah, but isn't it better to have custom scripts for the phone you are using?
Galaxy Tab for example. I think

Flashtool / SEUS working in Virtualbox (Ubuntu)

Just wanted to post a notice of success story of getting SEUS and Flashtool working under Ubuntu 11.04 with Virtualbox installed from the repository running Windows XP. This means that it IS possible to use both of these tools just fine under Linux (with Windows running as a guest). Looking around the web a few weeks ago led me to believe that it couldn't be done, as some people (Mac users IIRC) were having issues getting Virtualbox to properly handle the X10 when it is in flash mode. Here are the steps that worked for me:
1. Install Virtualbox from Ubuntu Software Center
2. Create a Windows XP virtual machine and install Windows
3. Add your username to the group "vboxusers" in Ubuntu (this will allow the VM to use USB devices) and reboot to apply the change.
4. Create a blank filter under USB in the settings of the main Virtualbox menu so that all USB devices can be picked up automatically.
5. Run SEUS and check for updates, first time doesn't work because it installs the drivers for flash mode, second time worked fine for me.
6. Use Flashtool, etc. as you like - fully functional.
It was just nice to realize I didn't have to look around for a Windows machine to borrow for the amount of time it takes to test out different basebands and custom ROMs/kernels, so I thought I would share here.
Post a link to this thread in the Flashtool thread...
Should be helpful for others...

Amazing how i was told Vbox cannot do this.
Well done.
This is awesome. My SATA connector on the mainboard just broke and the disks attatched to it was my Windows 7 installation. Now that that is gone (until I get it fixed) I'll have to use this method because I had my Linux running on the reserve/backup PATA disk (just in case **** happens, and it came in handy now).
And I really don't want to re-partition those disks, reinstalling Windows, reinstalling Mint (Fixing possible GRUB or MBR issues etc.) So this is gonna come in very very handy.
As I'm writing this I'm installing XP in VirtualBox.
I had to reboot linux after adding the username to the vboxusers group before it could pick up my USB ports.
But else it's working flawlessly...
Original post updated with reboot instructions, thanks! Glad to hear it's working for you too.
Flashtool works in VirtualBox for Mac Users
Hi Everyone,
I confirm that it works in Virtualbox for Mac. The point was: create a blank filter for USB. I did it under the windows machine.
Thank You coverup!

I have been using it for past 2-3 months didn't knew that general opinion was that it doesn't works.
well i don't have a filter coz i use my usb devices on linux most of the time so i manually add device.
confirmed working on both virtualbox and VMWare too.........

I suppose reboot is not exactly necessary for linux. You just need to logout and login again to update the granted groups.
I didn't create a blank USB filter, because I don't want to catch every USB device.
Instead I created a filter for all devices with just the VendorId '0fce' to catch all states of my X10.
Amazing great work ,,Well done.

Hmm... Not working for me with virtualbox, a mac host and a Win XP guest.
First tried manually adding. Next, I put a blank USB rule at the top of the USB filters. This time, it successfully captured and the hardware install wizard popped up. FlashTool did not recognize the phone.
Soooo.... are drivers from SEUS needed (unclear on that)? Sony pulled SEUS for x10, by the way. If needed, has someone mirrored it somewhere? USB drivers are installed - FT and adb work fine when phone normally booted.
I'm using parallel 7 on osx lion
windows 7 runs very smoothly and it can read my phone's sd card
but x10 is not recognized in flash tool
i thought virtual box and parallel are similar
so how to create a blank filter under USB in the settings ?

I figured out my problem. It was just as I expected. A different set of drivers is needed to use flashtool to flash when the phone is in flash mode. It seems that many people take this for granted, since they've had an xperia for a while, it isn't explicitly mentioned in the flashtool posts.
The flashtool folder will something called gordons gate (IIRC). If you didn't install that and try again.
Does it really work? I just found out there is a problem for ADB working under windows 7 as a guest. It is also documented as a bug
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/6620
Given problem with that, I am very leery to even want to flash anything with that even though it is using a different driver.
Very good! After a lot of research. I was already trying fastboot, unsuccessfully, when I found this. Worked perfectly on Ubuntu 11.10 32b & VirtualBox.
One point I'd like to mention is that even creating the blank filter, besides flashing worked on first try, adb was not finding the device. I had to manually attach it, and more than once while rooting it. Pretty easy, but was unexpected and I wasn't waiting for something like that. May help others.
I still have to try filtering by verdor ID as suggested by User Name in post #10.
Thanks!

I did not know about linux version of Flashtool. I will check it thanks a lot !!
My phone is a Zopo ZP900 and the win version of Flashtool is 4.0 on Windows. I don't know if the linux version is compatible for my device (MTK 6577).

androidVNC to webtop

I have the idea that Just as the Ubuntu hacks for android work, we could use androidVNC to connect and view the webtop from the phone without HDMI or the dock, using the phones screen.
Another thing is many of us are using SystemR89's ubuntu hack, with Gnome or LXDE so then all we need is to have tightVNCserver installed as well in the Ubuntu eviroment. Do the steps provided in the above site androlinux.com and trigger that Ubuntu Session to start and then connect on loopback should work.
As I recall ubuntu.sh sets up the soft links or Binds. I don't recall what Booubuntu does but it appears to chroot you to the Ubuntu enviroment for install of the rest of the packages.
I don't think we need to mess with those, they have been done by SystemR89's WebtopMOD. We just need to Chroot to the Ubuntu.disk and give the command "export USER=root" and "vncserver -geometry 1024x800" to start the VNC server Then connect via AndroidVNC.
You'll note that our Phone already has a ubuntu.sh on the root directory. Evidence that moto basically copied the work??? IDK.
I'm looking for some ideas or help from someone who knows ubuntu better then me on how to do this.
I'll hack at it a bit and see if I can get anywhere.
I doubt too many people will find this useful, maybe I'm wrong though. If it would be helpful to you let me know, it will add to my drive to figure it out.

Need advice on setting up linux install

In that I got an idea, took the first step, and am now completely out of my depth.
Let me start at the beginning.
I've always wanted to get into android development, but with the departure of CosmicDan, my recent format of my home computer, and a lucky shot at taking a general development class have all culminated to suggest now's the time.
Here's my objective: Dualcore desktop computer, dualbooting Windows 8 and a flavor of linux focused entirely on being an android toolkit. Here's my problem: I used linux for a week in my highschool networking class most of a decade ago. Red Hat 7 or 8, maybe? Anyway, I know virtually nothing except what I've osmosed from using an ADB shell.
I need to know which flavor of linux is best for android dev, how to set up a dual boot, and after that point, probably step-by-step instructions on establishing a build environment and using github. I'm not completely useless at this, I know how to use google, but a lot of information is outdated and this is a somewhat situational goal.
ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Ubuntu!
And google Ubuntu google installer

Ubuntu is more user friendly but if you want development I would suggest 1: backtrack 2: arch Linux (for advanced users) 3: fedora
Sent from my R800x using Tapatalk 2
Apparently Backtrack is called Kali Linux now...
"It includes support for the Metasploit Project's Metasploit Framework, a tool for developing and executing exploit code against a remote target machine.[2] It also includes the security tools Wireshark, John the Ripper, Nmap and Aircrack-ng.[2]"
Hahaha hell yes I'll take some of that.
I still think I'll need to install Ubuntu - I don't know how I'd put this particular build on a flash drive. Installing it from inside ubuntu would probably be easiest.
EDIT: Actually they have excellent instructions on the website for setting up a flashdrive.
im using ubuntu just fine
im on ubuntu 10.04 i compile builds fine
Use the Ubuntu wubi installer for dual boot
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
Okay, Kali Linux is installed and operational, programs are updated, and I even figured out how to install Flash via the mysterious powers of 'apt-get'. Using Grub for dual boot, and I found my way around configuring it and populating a new cfg file via the terminal. Whew.
Perhaps 4/20 was a bad choice for learning a new and notoriously complex OS, or maybe it was the best choice.
I guess I'm ready to set up a kitchen, but now I need input again. Do I just 'apt-get' some magical box of android goodies, or is this process more involved?
Edit: The answer is 'more involved', but not by much. I got the kitchen from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246 and I was even able to independantly apt-get my way out of an error without googling it! So, it's running... I guess it's time to start cutting up a ROM. I'm inclined to believe CyanogenMod would be the best starting point for that, and I'm doublefortunate that my roommate has a Nexus he's willing to let me experiment on, as I don't want to navigate the unique structure of Xperias yet.

[Q] Has anyone tried flashing Ubuntu 13.04/newer to their Nexus7 recently?

As far as I know the latest version of Ubuntu Desktop available to Nexus 7 is 13.04.
Is anyone still use this with success as ubuntu device, or making N7 to local linux server.
I currently wait for it to be flashed to my device using ubuntu on desktop pc. Maybe there is an easier way, like using NRT (Nexus Root Toolkit) through windows based system, I don't need android system on nexus 7 (like using Dual-boot or anything like that I just want pure Ubuntu on it nothing more) as recent updates made it quite unstable in performance.

UPDATE: Finally the flash image downloaded (took ~1hour idk why that was so long process) but then the error "password not specified" showed up and closed the Installer. There were no dialogs where I could enter the password.... What could wrong I had done here?
Update 2: Used manual flashing instructions in this ubuntu wiki https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Nexus7/Installation and t finally completed booting up so far so good.

Unless you plan on using a mouse. it'll be useless.. There's a touchscreen bug that makes the cursor stuck so Ubuntu is a waste of time...
There was another distro however that had a multiROM image that was based off Ubuntu 12.04 that wasn't so bad but it wasn't very good either since it had numerous strange bugs.
Good luck! ^^

I have wireless logitech mouse and keyboard with unify dongle so that's not a problem. But the old version Ubuntu feels like old forgotten project when it comes to updating binaries, I had to install all of them I need manually. Else working fine (except for the touchscreen bug you mentioned, it often gets stuck somewhere and touchscreen becomes really useless...)
