Geek Squad or SquareTrade? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I have never added an extended warranty to my phones before. I added the geeksquad to this one but have been reading a TON of negative stuff about it. I was thinking of dropping it and getting the square trade instead. Does anyone have anything they could share on this?

Never used geeksquad but have had and am currently using square trade.. S4 insurance is 99.99 right now for 2 years and there's always coupons I got one for 40% off that was a one day deal just got another coupon for 30% off today in my email... They're quick when I broke my iPhone in 2010 (I ran it over) I called them they said they would send me the full retail vslue to replace it minus the 99.00 deductible .. So in my case it was 649.00-99.00 that I received via check in just 2 or 3 days probably before they even got my phone.
Square trade is transferable to a new device if your contract is still valid.
One thing about how square trade works..
They will pay out for full retail price once then your contract is considered completed even if it hasnt been 2 years..
If you just need small repairs (mic, buttons, lcd , etc) they will do all of it but cost if those repairs will be deducted from the full retail value..
In other words if you total your phone and they give you full value or have a bunch of small repairs done that total up to full retail value both will end your contract.. If you only have a repair that's value is say 200 and then you end up totaling your phone you would only get 449.00-99.00 instead of the full 649..
Those numbers are just from my iPhone but I believe this phones full retail value is close

Thank you very much, that was great info and enough to sell me, where can i sign up to get coupons for them?

I use SquareTrade for all my mobile electronics purchases. Car stereos, my kids' Nintento 3DS systems (we have 3 of those, yeesh), my wife's iPhone(s), my house SGS2 and my SGS4...
I have had to make a few claims in the past, and I was pleasantly surprised at how fast they are, plus the money was deposited right into my paypal account.

you love to throw your money away, dont you!
didnt rcklss1 said there's 99$ deductible for square-trade?
i have geeksquad, 9.99$ a month with NO DEDUCTIBLE!
2 weeks after i got galaxy s4, i cracked the screen on the first drop thanks to Gorilla Glass 3 bull**** claiming to be stronger!
filed claim with qeeksquad, 7 days later they told me to come in to bestbuy to get a brand new replacement! maybe there is no gs4 parts availabile yet or there is no refurbished gs4 yet.

Your paying 240 for 2years of service.. Even if I had to do square trade twice it would only 200.. Still paying less than you..

how am i paying 240$ a year?. i pay 9.99$ a month and cancel anytime. let just say you cracked the screen in 2 year. you paid 200$ to squaretrade PLUS 99$ deductible = 299$.
i only pay 240$ in 2 years with NO DEDUCTIBLE = still only paying 240$ to replace the phone.

ST is $99 for 2 years (I paid only $80), plus $99 deductible (from retail value).
BB is $10 per month, no deductible.
At the end of 2 years, BB will cost you $240 whether you replace a phone or not, ST will cost only $100 unless you replace the phone, then it's $200.
Just depends on what you want.
If you like the idea of not having to go to a brick/mortar store for warranty, and want to save in case you never have to replace a phone, then ST is for you.

Most people get insurance to cover their loss in the event something accidentally happens...
P.S. - Don't take other people's opinions as a personal affront to your choices. You like BB, I like ST. For me ST is a much better option than BB. End of story.

funny. here is a true story.
i have a coworker, her gs3 has cracked screen.
i said "why dont you file claim with the insurance?"
she said "why? i have to pay 99$ deductible. my contract end in 3 months, i just wait and get gs4 instead"
that means she spending money on insurance and not using it, what a waste!

Yea but if you pay for bb all at once like st, Its only 160, so if you break your phone once, bb is worth it, if you don't break your phone at all there was no point in having insurance.. right?

LOL! As many bricks as we've had, they're still a very small percentage of the actual claims.
I blame that the US $ keeps dropping in value...
I haven't gotten the notice in my mailbox yet. Currently, I'm paying $7 a month for my TEP on each of my two phones. If the increase is another $8 each phone making it $15 a phone, I would cancel TEP. It's not worth it as the EPIC is aging, and I would rather pay up some money and get another phone.
It is not $8.00 plus $7.00 it is a $1.00 increase bringing the total to $8.00. Pull your head out.

I just cancelled mine and I use BestBuy's insurance because it's only $2 more (now) and covers user error.
Heh, I was going to post that this should be a poll with the options "It's inflation and to be expected", "ZOMG Sprint is farking me!", and "ZOMG it's because you guys keep insurance claiming rom bricks!".... apparently I was too late though and they've all been covered already
My guess is that if it wasn't for all the fraudulent claims, it wouldn't have gone up.
This was a good reminder for me to cancel mine. Paying nearly $100 a year (per line) plus a possible $150 deductible to replace a phone is not worth it.
I've had my phone replaced a few times under the TEP (without paying deductible), and although it was nice, in each case it would have been covered by the manufacturer warranty anyway.

Misread the OP post, damn my bad. People on here are so damn serious! Still we signed a contract, I don't find a reason for them to increase the price when we are still under contract.
I thought it was 8 dollars already
@mattalica how the hell are u paying $420 on tep
TEP is 100% worth it, it covered the replacement costs for 2 Moments
One had a bad USB port, replaced for free, other was stolen replaced for $100.
So figure 2 new moments at $400 each, - $100, and I figure I am $700 ahead
Even if it goes up, it has paid foritself already many times over!!

Agreed. My wife has had 2 stolen, one go through the wash, and one run over by a Mack truck. My son has had one go through the wash, and one time he ran into the ocean with his Blackberry in his pocket. My other son left his phone outside overnight in the rain.
And none of that include all the times we've taken phones back to the store for TEP swaps for bad speakers and other defects.

I accidentally effed my battery terminals as an Epic n00b... paid $100 for a replacement but it certainly beats paying $300-350 for a flebayed Epic. Staying with TEP.

sprint phone insurance TEP is now more $$$ higher deductible

Bummin, but as I have already had 5 phones replaced under the TEP, I still have come out FAR ahead. Twice I had to pay the $100, (1 stolen, I broken) The 3 other phone replaced for free under TEP had bad USB ports.
That said, I will probably be dropping the TEP on my two older phones (Moment & EVO), as they can now be replaced cheaply, but the Epics still cost enough to replace to be worth it, IMO.
I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes $11 across the board for any smart phone. Kinda like they did with the $10 "premium data fee" which was originally for only charged for Wimax 4G phones.

Yep. I don't bother with overpriced TEP. If the thing is defective, that's what the warranty is for. Used handsets on Craigslist and staggered upgrades on my three lines is my "insurance policy" if something happens beyond that.
$11 a month is ridiculous for a device that you only paid 200-300 bucks for. You are essentially paying for the thing more than twice over the length of your contract. Then throw in the deductible on top of it, jeez.
This is for new upcoming devices. ATT deductible is $200 for The Note yet $50 for the Pantech Burst. It will become phone dependent.

When the Epic was released people paid $200. That doesn't mean that's the price of the phone. Retail was $549.99 at that time. Add in taxes it's close to $600. Even $11 over 22-24 months is only 242-264 dollars. Even if you factor in having lost or damaged the phone in a way that warrants the deductable, your still under the retail cost. Sprint doesn't care what phones are going for on Craigslist. That's personal seller value of used phones. If you didn't take the TEP, had a problem that isn't covered under your manufacturer warrantly, or had the phone lost or stolen, and came into a store to buy a replacement new in box, you'd be paying retail. Roughly twice what you'd pay with the TEP and a deductable.
Sprint isn't screwing anyone. They just don't have the best deal around if your able to find a working replacement cheap on CL or Ebay, which isn't always a gaurantee, but can be the norm.
Sprint TEP is still a great value for flagship devices. Anything new is gonna hold it's retail value for awhile. Once that value starts to drop though, there are other options, that may or may not be cheaper in the long run, but may also turn out less reliable.
I for one don't wanna chance personal sales for anything considered a high end device if I need a replacement for my main phone. I'd rather have a professionally refurbished device so I'm gauranteed the quality of the product I'm getting, as if the replacement has an issue through TEP they will immediately replace it again, as long as the issue is legit.

Insurance on electronics is pure profit for retailers. If you figure what you pay over a ten year span on extended warranties you'd have enough money to replace the phone with money to boot. If you want tep go for it but it's a sucker bet.

I personally bought a 2-yr accidental warranty when I purchased my Epic. I think it was ~$90.
Sure, I can't walk into a store and have a phone on my way out, but I'm saving some serious $$. My local sprint store has been good about giving me loaners when I've had to send my phone into Sammy.

Its not even close for me.
3 phones had to be replaced, and was done for free
2 phones replaced via TEP w/ $100 deductible
To replace those phones out of pocket instead of TEP would have been 4 x $150 for the moments and over $400+ for the Epic, for total of $1000
The phones broke when they were still rather expensive to replace, so, no TEP would have cost me over $1000 (and that is for second hand craig's list or ebay devices, not even factory refurbs) in the last 3 years
With TEP, I paid out $200 + (2 x $8 x 36) or = $576 for a total of $776, a $224 dollar savings plus the benefit of TEP, and the benefit of 4 new phones
Totally worth it, IMO.
If your phones is a cheap model, less than $200 without subsidy, then no, TEP, is a waste, but when your phone is $500-$700 to replace, TEP is a must have extra.

Did anyone sell their S3 to get the S4? Can anyone recommend where to buy the S4?

Trying to sell my S3 in to Best Buy (they offered me $250) and then buy it outright (they have it listed for $700). BUT on the Sprint website and on Amazon they have it listed for $600. Best Buy told me now apparently they don't do the "price match" for cell phones on contract o I'd hafta pay the $700 which is total BS! I was planning on getting my S4 this week (tomorrow or Saturday) but now I guess I can't! Can anyone recommend where I can get an S4 (not eBay) that also has a buy back program + "price match"? ANYYY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED! Trying to get this phone ASAP, thanks!!
They will give you $262.50. The computers in the store only show good or bad condition not perfect. Tell them you saw on their website the perfect condition trade in value and they will check it. Also they don't print edition match on contract phones with is different than a off contract phone. Tell them you want to buy from them and if you are going to get the Geek Squad protection, which I totally recommend over Sprint and Assurion, tell them you also want that. But you will just order from Amazon if you have to. Also talk to a Samsung rep in the store they will probably talk to the manager and do the price match. This is exactly how I did everything.

What about paying $700 from Best Buy?! Kinda dumb I'd rather sell it on eBay for $300+ (and have them take around $30 for selling fee) and only have to pay $600 through the Sprint website or even Amazon. I just want it tomorrow or sometime before the week ends and I won't be able to do that the way I just said. I'd hafta wait a week or so. Yes I am a very impatient person!

Also they don't print edition match on contract phones with is different than a off contract phone. Tell them you want to buy from them and if you are going to get the Geek Squad protection, which I totally recommend over Sprint and Assurion, tell them you also want that. Well the mall (where Best Buy is) is like 30min away from me and I don't want a wasted trip there... so I literally JUST got off the phone with them and the girl didn't seem to know what she was talking about, but as I stated in the OP they said they don't do price match for on contract phones.
Please delete this double post!
Make sure you tell them you are buying it full price off contract, they told me no until I made that clear then they looked a little confused and we're lime oh okay ya we can do that. I made it clear that I shop there often and wanted to buy the phone from Best Buy not Amazon. And I wanted the Geek Squad protection and they said fine no problem then.

What do you mean buying it off contract?? I'm not though... right lol? I currently have a contract with Sprint for 2yrs but am only one yr into it but want this phone so technically I'm buying it on contract right... I'm getting confused now

You are in the middle of a contract so yes you are paying full price off contract. What you want Best Buy to do is match Amazon's price of $599 for the off contract s4. If you were buying a on contract agreement phone thats when you get the huge discount. Trust me I got the S2 the day it came out and since then the Galaxy Nexus, S3, and now the S4.
---------- Post added at 07:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:59 PM ----------
It doesn't mean your contract ends or anything just that you aren't getting the discount and paying full price, then they will price match Amazon. They get confused to because not many people do this. Thats why I said make it clear you want it full price but with a price match. And throw in the Geek Squad, It's $10 a month with unlimited replacements with no deductible, just don't lose your phone, they don't cover that.

Read this and specifically the first part of the second paragraph, it clearly states "on contract" which you are not buying.

OK lemme get this straight, and hopefully when I go to Best Buy tomorrow it's not a wasted trip lol..... So what you want me to do (and what you did to get your S4 from Best Buy and got them to price match it??) is: go to Best Buy tomorrow and tell them that I have an S3 that I want to sell into them, then I say I would like to purchase the S4 off contract and I would like them to price match Amazon/Sprint's price of $600 because I really wanna get it from Best Buy and get their Geek Squad protection. If I got that right.... that should work and I should walk out of Best Buy tomorrow with my new S4 for $599 (plus tax)?!?! Thanks!
PS- Do I hafta do THIS to sell in, or can I sell it in to them rooted with a custom ROM lol?
If they argue ask for a manager and show them there price matching policy which I pulled from there website. It shouldn't come to that but it is their policy. I price match a lot there because I prefer Best Buy over any other stores. In fact I have a interview with there mobile department tomorrow. LOL.

Yes, exactly what I did. I was told the whole we don't price match thing early on when I was thinking about buying the S4 then when I was actually about to buy it I did my research and went to a store with a Samsung rep who knows me fairly well and got the breakdown that they would do all of this once I made it clear about the off contract stuff. Good luck and enjoy your phone, it will all work out and be fine. LOL.

Also make sure they give you the perfect condition price of $262.50 if it is in perfect condition. It shows on their website and I had them check it and they said thats fine. http://www.bestbuytradein.com/bb/fu...es&modelNumber=SPHL710KT&manufacturer=Samsung

Also they don't care what the carrier price is just say Amazon because its a store. Sprint can kind of do what they want sometimes because they are the carrier.
Thanks GiantJay I remember you from the S3 forums and can't wait to join the Sprint S4 community. HOPEFULLY I'll see you guys tomorrow!
You will. Let me know when you get it. I have an interview tomorrow at Best Buy at 4:30pm so hopefully I have a new job and you a new phone tomorrow, all thanks to Best Buy! LOL

They just need the phone and charger. You don't have to have a charger but you won't get perfect condition without it. Also the S4 has the awesome 2amp charger, one of the best features on this phone is the quick charge I think.

Free Galaxy Note 3......I'll take that!

Went to At&t retail store on the way home to pick up my Note 3....went thought the check out process with the Att rep and came to pay and she said "Well I guess its free". She had the manager come over and check and he said the same thing. Oh well good for me I guess...LOL :good:. And I high fived the rep as I left.
Yes I used my 2 year upgrade to get it. Also it was also a business account and it was not charged to the account (I checked)
Oh well just thought I would share....
Oh ya and I had to do some extra work to keep my unlimited data since they try to remove it no matter what now....I had to call 611 and have them reapply during the switch over to the new phone.

Tell you what, buy back your Note 2 and I'll take the free Note 3. You just got a more advanced phone for free and cash for your old one, how can you seriously be complaining? You're probably the only one who has gotten an absolute free N3 and aren't happy. That's like saying..oh no...I won the lottery but now I have to pay taxes on it, darn. -_-
how is that even possible? Did you have to renew your contract? Pay for the discounted price for the phone?

Ya I didn't want to add that to my companies monthly bill!
Are you sure it was free? There is a program called next where the sales tax is charged at point of sale and then an installment plan is added for 20 months...
There is also a bug right now at Corp stores where sometimes sales tax is not charged on a transaction...
I'm a great salesman and part of being one is knowing every deal and offer... that's the only way I know where the note would be free.
Don't get me wrong I love the next program but this sounds like possible bait and switch...
If this happened to you, you will notice a 35 dollar increase in you bill and a lack of the standard upgrade fee.
Trust me, I am a retail sales person at a Corp store. It sounds like they signed you up for next which is an installment plan that raises bill. It gives a one year upgrade option but it should only be sold to someone that wants it.

Are you talking about AT&T replacing it or Asurion?
I called AT&T, instead of the insurance company. First time (headphone jack), the rep said it was still under AT&T's warranty. Second time (water damage), the rep said it would be a pain to go through the insurance company & they could replace it , but would have to charge the deductible. I asked could he waive it. He checked with the manager & he ok'd it, even sent the replacement overnight.

That makes more sense. I've never had an issue getting a phone replaced within a year from AT&T, some had physical damage to the housing. Water damage would be pretty iffy, but as long as you have documentation, I don't see how they can charge you. I've never paid for insurance, so I don't have experience with that process.
This thread has run its course. Clerical and pricing errors don't happen every day, congrats OP on a legit free device.

Insurance for our Nexii?

I was doing some googling to see if there was any insurance available for our new phones like Asurion which I have on my S6 w/ Verizon.
I came across this site http://www.worthavegroup.com/product/cell-phone-insurance/ and I was wondering if anyone one has used them before.
They cover anything and everything that can happen including lost/theft.
For 1 year of coverage the cost is $64 and has a $50 deductible.
Seems like a great deal just never heard of anyone using them before.

Have yet to file a claim (*knock on wood*) but I have used Squaretrade for quite some time.
A little bit of googling and get you 25% to 30% off making it ~ $70 for 2 years of coverage.
$75 deductible I think.

Nope,
You can only insure a phone that Verizon sells in their stores. So you could technically buy someone elses Samsung S5 for example and put it on your line and keep it insured. You just cannot bring a phone that was not sold by VZW and insure it.
If you already have an old phone, you are also eligible for an additional Family plan discount on Square Trade. No experience with these guys, but Square trade has been awesome for me with next day shipping or walk into a store to get most of the issues resolved (For Walk-ins, you dont have to pay any deductible, if you use one of there preferred stores)

I bought through then for my 6p, but I was unable to find an coupon codes that worked. I even signed up a junk email address of mine to get the coupon they send out, and it explicitly said "not valid on smartphone plans" in the fine print.
Squaretrade is great, just understand that they ARE NOT a phone INSURANCE plan, they are a PROTECTION plan.
Insurance covers loss and theft, protection plans only cover damage.
I also got squaretrade with the accidental damage protection. $99 for 2 years with $75 deductible. Covers devices up to $999. Only catch though like the_hustleman says it does not cover loss or theft. Can't really blame them though. That's how they keep great rates. Just keep your phone on you at all times.
Also like Squaretrade for device insurance....
I'm just using one of my savings account as interest. I'm not against insurance. But we should receive at least 50% back or be vested but to pay and get nothing.

What insurance gives you is peace of mind. $99 to join and $75 per incident is doable if I break my phone. Paying another 600 outright ain't happening. and would cost more anyways. That's just how insurance works. You pay a small amount in a pot that can be used by all contributors to the pot in case they need it. You don't get to take your money back out of the pot after 2years just because you did not use it. You were covered for those 2 years.
