if you have a steady hand and a girlfriend, or a girlfriend with a steady hand, a layer of clear coat nail polish would do it, and it eventually cracks/peels off or you can slide it off sideways with your finger. Use a can of compressed air a few inches away to blow it dry and keep the layer super thin.
ive fixed scratches on SLR lenses that way, then wiped excess off and polished with microfiber cloths and buffed. same with screen scratches on gorilla glass on my old Atrix.

I agree with this. If you manage to apply bubble-free, the image quality should not be affected.
Alternatively, go completely naked, and when it gets scratched beyond acceptable, replace the camera module, they are $30-40 on ebay
The camera has a film on it out of the box unless you have removed it but it almost un noticeable and really hard to remove.

right on the lens; you can take it off or thin it and let it redry with nail polish remover, so you can fix it over and over and never damage the glass.

that is the thinnest they have. without a case that is probably your best bet. they work great on my samsung tpu case on my note2. i carry my phone in my right front jeans pocket and surprisingly they haven't come off yet and i take my phone in and out of my pocket a lot. anyways, just an idea. perhaps you can find something better but i think this is it. make sure you clean off the battery cover with alcohol real well so they stick and stay stuck.

SquareTrade or something is a popular choice I keep hearing about
I'll make my own protective cover, using double sided adhesive tape, liquid teflon or silicon. Modeling that to just fit Nexus 4's back and adding 1mm to its thinness.
I may get the bumper case

Yeah, probably a TPU one.
I will most definitely get a Noreve case for it.
Yep, a black rubber one for the back/sides and a clear skin for the screen.
I voted no, but would use a thin clear case if they became available just for scratch protection. I don't care for the TPU cases as they add some bulk.
Will be getting a flip case...
I don't know really, I've never had a glass parts phone, only plastic.
I saw the Verge video too and the crack was pretty annoying since once you see it you can't ignore it.
But then again with screenprotectors and cases the phone gets less comfortable, besides Gorilla Glass 2 is supposed to be really strong and flexible. Once I get the phone and use it for a bit I'll rethink and definitely check out this thread again to see who recommends what cases etc.
Yes, but I'll only use it for the first month or so. After that naked.

OK so I've never used a case on any phone I've every owned because I've always hated how thick they were and made it impossible to fit in a belt style holster. Now however I definitely need one since the speaker is on the back making the phone impossible to watch videos or do anything with audio while laying the phone down. So I'm looking for something that's as thin add possible while also having a kick stand of some sort... Any ideas?

I didn't disappear. I threw the case in the trash before taking any pictures, mea culpa. I do have the holster which is nice. If you don't believe me please go for it, but it. will. scratch. your. phone. Just wait till the active case comes out. It looks nice and seems the inner layer is all silicone which is much more friendly on your phone than the plastic. The problem is, you just aren't going to find a hard slim case that wont scratch your phone unless the entire thing has a soft rubber inside, is tight in the case, and doesn't use any sort of sliding mechanism to fit together. It's the friction and whatever debris is in there that causes the scratching... on the glass. The plastic bezel is very soft. Doesn't take much to scratch it. Dust under a TPU case can scuff up the phone too, but not like the surface. You can use a TPU case with the surface. Looks fine and works great.
Just for your enjoyment... I did some dumpster diving through my kitchen trash can, but my wife took that trash out already. Got my arms full of meat juice, spit, eggs, and other nasty crap just to show that I'm not a troll, but the bag is apparently in the big can in the garage. Maybe I'll take some pics of that just to prove that I have the case. I have no axe to grind with Seidio. I've spent hundreds on their products. They just don't make a good surface case for the nexus 4. I just don't want people to damage a hard to find phone and in the process, waste $60ish hard earned on a product that does more damage than it protects.
Jayrod is not a troll and anything he says I believe he has helped me with countless things on here

I occasionally use a black rubberized case that is fairly thin and not obtrusive. I bought it on Amazon for next to nothing and it works well for what it is. It's not overly protective, but it will protect against scratches. It's good quality and keeps the phone from sliding around on surfaces, but nothing fancy. If you want a thin, clean look it's definitely an option that would work.

saw that, but it just makes it look bulky. i really enjoy the phone being so thin, that i don't even realize that it is in my pocket. i've realized that this phone is made rather tough with the teflon backing and gorilla glass... but of course, it's still prone to chips/scratches/dents from it falling and whatnot...
I got a cheap silicone case for my M from eBay, and it provides the scuff/drop protection. I rely on the durability of the phone to take the impact. And I'm super careful. Screen protectors are good as well!

It covers the back and sides well, with just the tiniest lip on the front to keep the shell attached and raise the screen off of the table if you put your phone face down. The scratches actually all happened with the bumper on. I take care of my phone really well so I'm pretty sure dust got in between the bumper and phone and scratched it. It's more of a micro scuff than anything but I can still see it when I put it under a magnifying glass in a well lit room. Trust me you've got them too.

The problem is the bezel is plastic, not actually any type of metal. Google really should have made the bezel metal and it would have really improved the phones feel and quality. I have a diztronic case and even though I've had it on the whole time there are still scratches on the bezel, just a bunch short, faint ones. The case feels quite sharp on the inner edge and I think its what is actually scratching my bezel.

You can't powder coat plastic. One, it is non-conductive, and two, it will melt in the curing process even if you could somehow get the material to stick. And the vacu-formed chrome will make it tough to paint.
One thing you could do is to put a satin finish on it with a little wet sanding with 400-800 grit sandpaper, being careful not to sand through the chrome. I just keep the OEM bumper on it and I don't see it.

Yeah... iPhone users had the same complaints. Aluminum is fairly soft so some folks noticed scratches on the beveled edges. But I would think you'd need to pocket your phone with keys or loose change for that to happen.
I thought this thing was supposed to have a glass camera lens? I was super excited about that when I got the phone because all of my past phones ended up getting scratched camera lenses. Turns out that this lens now has micro scratches just like all the rest. It doesn't have any coating or plastic on it does it? It feels like plastic when I checked to see if it had a lens cover... I'm pretty disappointed with this.
Sapphire doesn't mean unscratchable though.....

Sure, it you handle of lot of diamonds. Sapphire is 9 hardness on the mohs scale. I have a watch with a sapphire crystal and its still as shiny as the day I got it, 6 years later.
U expect the same sapphire quality as ur watch?

I know it's not "unscratchable" but having micro scratching after day 3 is pretty disappointing. I wonder if there is a coating similar to what's on the gorilla glass?
Man... This is pretty bad. Real scratched up, and I'm gentle on my phone. Is there any cover I can put over it similar to a screen protector?
Mine is scratched to after 3days. Only flaw worth the phone imo.

Mine looks flawless, and I've had it 8 days. I'm not exactly nice to my phones, either.

Look at it under bright light... At the right angle you will see a bunch of little scratches.

Sapphire will scratch. Just not as bad as glass.
Scratch free here, but my case keeps the lens lifted off surfaces, not sure if that is a big factor or not.
Using a case I don't see how you could scratch it up, even when I wear a nice watch with sapphire I am careful not to bang into things. Heck I'm always careful not to bump into stuff and hurt myself lol. Seriously tho I know some folks like to go naked with their phones and appreciate the form factor but one downside is its going to get scuffed up. I had a Rado watch once and you couldn't scratch that ceramic, that would be a good material to make a phone shell from.
I got 1 scratch. I don't know how i got it because i baby this phone

I never use screen protectors but I think I'll grab the good one at T-Mobile that they painstakingly put on since I would screw it up, case and that if it manages to get a scratch I'll freak out lol

I'd be surprised if you scratch it if you're even casually nice to your phone. Can't say the same for glass, even special glasses. It'll shatter, but you have to really abuse sapphire to scratch it.
So how do these scratches on the lens affect picture quality?
This is probably obvious but, the phone came with a little plastic disk over the lens. You did peel it off...??

Mine is Verizon, but the disk over the lense was a bugger to get off. I'd think they'd all come with it from the factory. IDK...
Micro scratches do not effect image quality. Unless the scratch is deep enough to refract light, then it doesn't matter.
But if you are really worried about it (ocd) then you can sometimes buff out a scratched lens by using a purified water and alcohol mixture. Dip a microfiber cloth into the solution and buff out lens... then use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe clean.
