[Q] Do you feel the need to run a custom ROM on Nexus 4?

Yes, people... the NEXUS 4!
This is the first time since Qtek 2020 was released that i feel that i no longer need to use a custom rom to fully appreciate a smartphone operating system.
The nexus 4 and Android 4.2.1 is a perfect match:
- everything is speedy
- the functionality is logical
- there is finally encryption included in the operating system from the get-go.
- Updates are instant!
- No apparent bugs with radio and hardware!
I'm in love with this thingy! :victory:
How do you feel about the Nexus 4 and it's operating system, will you put in a custom ROM?

Do I need it? no, it does everything I need it to do perfectly. Haven't even rooted yet, but I imagine I'll break down soon and start playing.
A custom kernel may help battery life.

Yes, I like the extra features of custom roms, easy as that.
Thats why its a Nexus, freedom of choice.

its a must, I haven't rooted yet to check any issues before I rely on it, you need custom roms due to the display and dpi, some of the text is too big in apps and don't provide an option so its not using the space effectively, talking about paranoid android rom

Custom kernel is necessary, the stock kernel on this phone sucks.
Custom ROM, not so much but it's nice to have all the extra features.

the stock experience is too plain. not enough options. even worse for those coming off of a samsung device. people can talk about the stock experience all they want... but its better on the custom rom side.

As I said in the other thread I tried all the custom ROMs and none were as good as stock. No issues with the stock kernel either. The ease of trying different ROMs and the option to do what we want is awesome though.

Agreed. Don't get me wrong, stock is great. I've been spoiled rotten by all the great devs on XDA. I can't live without options.
Stock kernel does blow, though.
I did miss T9 in the dialer, but it's not a deal breaker. It's also understandable that T9 isn't in AOSP.

I have only used the stock kernels on all my phones unfortunately, so don't have any experience with that.

nope. you need a custom rom to edit the navbar and put the menu button back in that so many of us are used to. you also need it to toggle the navbar if you so choose. and many more things.

right now... franco is the best. its smooth, responsive, and is huge for the battery. but his r16 is having random reboot issues. he is fixing right now, once fixed you can add completely stable to the list of things. but i am on r15 and its great. best thing is get franco and do as i do... when there is an update to it... give it a bit and look at the last page of thread to see if its stable.

it can. but i have never had any issues. unless you are in a position to worry about security... with your job, there is nothing to worry about.

and if you are in that sort of position to worry about security... the last phone you need is a nexus.

So far, still on stock ROM. If it weren't for ad-blockers requiring it, I wouldn't even have rooted it at this point. I do use Nova Launcher instead of the stock launcher, though. The only reason I might do a custom ROM is because I don't like not having 1% battery in notifications.

I feel like I need to run a custom ROM since custom ROMs have much more tweaks and features that stock does not have. CyanogenMod for example.

i would unlock the bootloader first, this will result in a full wipe, then flash a custom recovery, then ... have fun and try out some roms

Good decision . Samsung Phones have always the same bugs since the S1. I'm shure you will be satisfied

When you get the phone, IMHO, you MUST read the XDA's guides for unlock and root your terminal...then you can install Titanium Backup, ES File Explorer and CPU spy...un amazing widget is One More Clock...ENJOY!

You should do the boring root/bootloader unlocking first. It takes around 10 minutes, and it'll format everything. If you do it while you have a thousand apps installed, you'll lose them all and go back to the way it was on day one.
As for the rest, I installed emulators on mine, I can finally play Majora's Mask (I was so jealous of my friends when I was 9 because everyone but me had a nintendo 64...), and I do it in the train!

How is CM 10.1 on the Nexus 4? I do know some guys who did that but what are the benefits? I thought CM was just like stock Android.
Does CM 10.1 also have the quick toggles in the notification bar like the S3 has? Those green toggles?

Why do newbies always go for cm? Must be the cool animation at boot up.

Try out different ROMs. Popular ones are ParanoidAndroid, CM10.1, liquid smooth, etc. I have PA and absolutely love it.
If you want to combine PA, cm10.1, and AOKP ROMs all together in a single ROM, try out the PACmon ROM. I personally haven't tried it.

CM is popular, trustworthy and close to stock so if you were new the better question would be why wouldn't you go for CM? It's the least daunting one, especially if you're worried about flashing and stuff.

Why a custom ROM instead of debloated Stock?

I've had my RAZR M since March and love it. So much more powerful than my Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. I'm not new to flashing ROMs or overclocking, having begun my Android experience with the LG Ally and Eclair.
In my previous experience, there was a huge need for customizing the phone because the stock version as provided by Verizon was less than stable and/or slower than desirable. But this RAZR M seems awesome once you get rid of the bloat. I haven't had any issues with lag, connectivity, apps, etc. It's really a decent phone for my purposes.
I have already unlocked the boot loader and rooted it, backed it up, blown it away, customized stock, used Matt's utility to restore it, used rsdlite, etc. I've even scared the crap out of myself with a few soft bricks. Now I want to do more.
When I look at the threads for the various ROMs, I've noticed they are all pretty similar and they all tend to break something. Since most seem to be a derivative of JB, I see little reason to be tempted by them. Just a different roll of the same thing.
Obviously, I'm overlooking something here, some reason other than "because I can" that makes using a custom ROM version of generic JB better than stock JB. How is 4.2.2 different than 4.1.2 for instance? If custom is less stable or has some unresolved feature issues, how is it still better than stock? Is over clocking necessary (as it was with the Ally and the Play), or even noticeable? I would really appreciate some useful and honest feedback here. No wisecracks, please. This is a serious inquiry.

Personally, I just wanted something new and different than stock. I got my M when it first came out and didn't flash any roms until this past month. The big differences that I have noticed running a 4.2.2 based rom are that the camera seems to respond quicker, and when I set defaults they stick through reboot.
The problem with the defaults was one of my biggest gripes with the stock rom. Every time that I would reboot my phone, the defaults would clear and that drove me crazy.
Now as far as problems that I have noticed on the 4.2.2 roms, the only one that I really have is with recording video. It does not seem to want to pick up audio correctly and you can barely hear anything on playback. Also the front facing camera doesn't work for recording videos.
On the plus side of custom roms is that you do get more options to get the ui to look and feel how you want it to. And no, you don't have to over clock on this phone.
The best thing that I could say is flash carbon or pacman rom and play with it for a day or two and see how you like it.

on the surface, you are correct. however, there are some custom ROMs that give us JB 4.2.2 before it is officially released to us. here's a link to the new features: http://www.android.com/about/jelly-bean/
so, in addition to the new features, some custom ROMs offer various mods/tweaks. some claim to give better battery performance, others block ads, others reduce lag (although, that is mostly kernel related). so, just as calbrs stated, give one of them a try for a few days (make a nandroid of your current setup first though), and see how you like it.
problem for me though, as much I as should be on 4.1.2, I really enjoy being on the latest/greatest build, as I get to experience more features. and so long as my battery performance doesn't suffer too much, I'll stick on 4.2.2 for now.

Well, I've tried both Carbon and PAC and then settled on PAC. Quite honestly, I don't see a whole lot of actual performance difference. It IS cool to be running a custom ROM though. PIE is a pain as it always seems to pop up when I don't want it but has that What's That factor if you want to wow someone. And I do like having a custom lockscreen. Otherwise.... I guess I don't get it.
But then again, maybe I'm just old! Lol!

in terms of 4.2.2 over 4.1.2, correct - it's mostly aesthetics. but the performance is hardly noticeable since the M is already fairly quick.
some custom 4.1.2 ROMs, however, do offer better battery life (in part due to debloating, others have tweaks).
but if the performance difference is negligible to you, then why not stick to 4.2.2?
also, did you try the unofficial AOKP?
finally, some of these custom ROMs also have the latest kernels, which can help in terms of keeping your data connection.

I'd suggest you try Dhacker29's PA or CM. IMO much snappier than PAC.

Well, after a week of ROM testing, here is what the results have been so far:
Carbon comes out on top in a very close battle with Slimbean. What made the difference? Support. Slimbean is actually the better of the 2 ROMs in so many areas, but no updates since May 2013 means important tweaks and a functional camcorder are missing. Carbon is kept current, so if something is fixed in the Base version, it won't be long until we see it in Carbon.
I also worked with PAC, Paranoid, AOKP and CM 10.1. Each had its merits but were eliminated for various reasons. I did not look at any ROM that was not a 4.2.2 version.
I must confess, if Slimbean is ever updated to the latest 4.2.2 version, I will be taking another look.

so what was your reason for eliminating AOKP? this has been the best for me so far. although, I did not give carbon a fighting chance, as on first boot it was extremely laggy. but i'm re-considering....

If you have the time I would love a rom by rom review of what you did and didn't like. I'm in the market for a 4.2.2 rom and don't know where to start. I'm really looking to just settle on one and not have to try out a bunch.

To be perfectly candid, I really can't say there was anything "wrong" with it. It just didn't catch my attention in the same manner that Slimbean and Carbon did.
Today I realized I did not try Eclipse because I erroneously thought it was a 4.1 or 4.0 version ROM. I'll be giving it a go later tonight.
Quite honestly, I think it all comes down to personal preference more than performance. Depending on what apps you use, they all are pretty similar. What runs better is really more about your own hardware, how you use it, your selection of apps and your expectations as to how the phone ought to perform.

I'll give my experience, but to each their own:
PACMan:
most customizable, very stable, worst on battery life, dev is pretty good at posting updates (he only posts when there is a significant update)
AOKP:
very customizable, fairly stable, best battery life, dev is very responsive, interactive, and post updates daily
Carbon:
very customizable, most stable, dev is very responsive, interactive, and post updates daily;
CM10.1:
(stock, basically): haven't tried it
Slimbean:
very customizable, dev is non-existent; however, I gave this a go for about an hour as well, but dismissed it due to lack of customization when compared to PACMan
Orion:
very customizable, very stable, dev is very responsive, interactive, and post updates routinely; however, I gave this a go for about a day, but did not like the blackout themes/sounds/etc. but that was awhile ago, so I certainly owe this ROM another chance
Eclipse:
haven't tried it
Axoim
haven't tried it
JellyBeer
haven't tried it

This is perfect! Before reading this I was leaning to AOKP or Cyanogen. I like how customizable AOKP is and I like the updates and stability from Cyanogen. (from what I've read) I want a rom that is stable stable stable as I wouldn't consider myself a power user. Thanks for posting this!

See what I mean though. He dismissed Slimbean because it was not as customizable as PACman. I dismissed PACman as being too complicated, too customizable!
Hate to tell you this, Jersey846, but you probably will need to try a few yourself before you know what's right for you.
BTW, thus far Eclipse is proving to be very stable. I haven't had any noticeable lag, signal seems stable and comparable to what I normally see in my area. Looking good so far!

But this one is my precious phone just bought one month back.

Yes, I can't see see any disadvantage to rooting. It will allow you to do much more with your phone, more customization, more apps will work, etc. You should also look into custom kernels, they can help increase battery life a lot.

Can i successfully return to an UNROOTed STOCK thing in case of any problem??

Yes you can unroot and return to stock easily, especially if you use something like Nexus Root Toolkit, which has a button that just does that automatically.

Ok can i use franco kernel along with stock rom? i prefer having a pure google experience

I am using the nexus toolkit.It goes till the Booting modified bootloader... but goes on Waiting for Device..
and my stock bootloader says "locked state:locked" but i am using a GSM carier in India and i can change my connection with
a change of sim card!
Please guide.

I just unrooted my last rooted device a few days ago. I just don't use root anymore anyway. But, I unlocked all bootloaders on all my devices just in case I would need to root again in the future.
For me, rooting lost its appeal with 4.1. I not against rooting, but I do really think it's now more an hobbyist thing than before. So, it's a personal choice / preference.

Using custom ROMS and simply staying stock is another talk..
we can keep stock and even then root.Doing so we can use certain apps or services which require rooting to either flash into it or make a
update zip.
I am keeping myself stock until i really really need to go to some

I've had my phone for two days and that's probably the longest I've gone without rooting a phone lol. The main reason I do it is for TB. I like to restore all my apps. I also am spoiled at this point. I had Illusion on my S3 and the customization if unbelievable. I loved all features on it So i'm looking at putting a custom ROM and kernel on mine today.

Haha same here. Got phone in the mail Thursday and got it rooted by Friday evening. Only reason it took so long was I got the phone for my daughter and I let her take it to school Friday morning.
My GS4 went from the store to home, open the box, rooted and flashed custom ROM. Total time from store to finish about 30 minutes.:good:

Who is Waiting and going to use CyanogenMod?

Just wondering if you all are going to flash CM when they make it or another AOSP?
I know it will come soon especially since the Nexus 5 will have similar specs as with the 9005

I've owned Android since the good old days of the Google G1.
I don't think I've seen 1 version of CM that ran perfectly, no ROM was ever 'finished'.... so I'll be staying away from them from now on.
I'm actually probably NOT going to root my Note 3, can't see what I need to root it for tbh.

My first was the original galaxy i7500 but my cm experience was on the milestone 2 then g2x.
I really like cm when a device is no longer supported by their respective companies.
When I had the nexus 4, I used the latest cm 10.2 nightlies because to me the stock AOSP was lacking a few functions.
The note 3 has its own set of functions that I don't think we will ever see on CM.
However, would be very nice to have a dual booting system so I could flip flop between the two.

If the s4 has it, I am sure the note 3 900 will get it too.
One the biggest reasons for getting the 9005 was because I wanted to stick with a SOC that is easier for devs to work with.
Especially about a year from now when Sammy releases the note 5 and forgets about the note 3, we can at least update to the latest Android with CM

I usually run Paranoid Android on all my devices, but my experience with stock/rooted Note 3 so far has been fantastic, so I'm probably just going to run with things as is for the time being. Once PA releases I'll probably have to reevaluate though ;p

I kinda feel the same, I bought a few apps recently because it's not rooted. and these apps I'm happy to support because I use them on a daily baisis, like business calendar, poweramp, mx player etc. but I do find root useful for ntfs micro sdcard, especially when a file is bigger than 10GBs.
but what I really liked about a custom rom was editing minor things, having 8 icons along the screen horizontally. instead of what right now, 4? also all apps are HUGE dpi. I feel like when I load my mail. every mother fcker can read it from 5 metres away from me lol..

Ill Probably try it but wont stay with it. Lately on my s4 ive been preferring modded TW roms and will probably continue that with the N3

I don't want to even see Samsung's bloatware ever again.

I'm done with rooting and adding ROMs. I've rooted just about every phone I've owned, and they've never ran 100%. Something always had an issue and not running properly. Today's phone are almost perfect anyway. The Note 3 is bad ass just the way it is! If I do anything to it, it's maybe using Themer to give it a fresh look, but that's it?

I have been pretty impressed with the performance of the GN3 even after rooting. I am also using the s-pen functionality a lot more than i anticipated. I doubt there is any need to go the CM route.
A little off point, but someone mentioned they hadnt rooted yet. I had gone a week without rooting and was fine, but i had to root for tethering (havent installed an app yet though). So far, i have also included quite a bit of additional apps for the Pen Window - VERY handy.

I just need a ROM that will allow tethering.

I really hope Samsung implements LG KnockOn gesture though... to save me from pressing the hardware buttons again and again

Maybe a stupid question, but why are we not seeing any AOSP roms at this time ? With other devices they appeared much faster. Dont get me wrong, no trolling on ETA. Cant wait to see this beast (snapdragon 800) run stock android

I'm just waiting to be able to root my phone without voiding its warranty due to KNOX :/

multi window, pen window, air view, S note to name a few. And I generally like the look of touchwiz as well.
