Okay. I have a spreadsheet that I use to quote custom acrylic aquariums. I want to take this and turn it into an app for my boss and I because we both have Note 2's and the others have S3's... It seems relatively simple.
There is only one common thing that needs to be "setup" and that is the price per square foot of acrylic based on thickness chosen. (An array, 5 numbers)
That aside, I have to have a simple screen that we select thickness, enter the length, width, and height, then click Calculate and it should work the same as my spreadsheet....
So where do I start?
You can find great tutorials over there: http://www.vogella.com/android.html
For beginners: http://www.vogella.com/articles/Android/article.html
Are you wanting to write the app yourself?
If you want to write more apps then just this one, I would start with getting Eclipse set up for developing android applications. There are tons of tutorials on how to do this. Then use nikwen's links to follow a few basic guides to get you started. You can then dive in and post any questions or issues that you come across.
If you want someone to do it for you because you will never write another android app in your life, ask away. This app would be extremely easy to do and wouldn't take someone more than 30 minutes to complete. It would be a good starter app for someone.

You just want a screen where you provide the inputs and it will show the result when you click the Calculate button?
Thats it?

Right not only in Android but in other languages also like in Java taking input from user and displaying the output.

I would really like this one:

Really really nice
http://www.swypeinc.com/index.html << here is the product website
This is awesome. I'm looking forward to test it.
Really nice idea
This is just awesome, i can't see it working in theory, but in reality it does, it's great.
He convinced me with Mississipi
great idea. i haven't seen the video just read the text and seen the picture. it seems it is more for one handed use, because you have to hold down your finger until the word is completed. I personally use both hands/thumbs on my hardware and software keyboard (mississippi took me 6 taps to get the word with TouchPal, now unless swype can beat those taps it won't improve only degrade my productivity)...I'd still give it a try though it seems cool.
Swype uses one 'tap' for Mississippi.
Watch the video.
Looks Awesome!
This looks AWESOME! I signed up for the beta and received an e-mail telling me they will let me know when the beta is available.
one word - WOW
This looks simply AMAZING. I can't wait to give this a go, as I've yet to be too impressed with ANY other input method over the years; although there's been some great ones. If swype works as promised, I reckon this could be the 'be all, end all' input method.
good info, thanks.
Wow I canĀ“t wait to test it!
this will be intresting for both my diamond and touch screen laptop
man, this is unbelievable. considering most of the time is wasted on finding the right letters on the virtual keyboard when/when-not using a pen, this will be amazing even for touch usage.
i'm mind blown. gotta get this
Interesting to note that someone else has had a go at this already:
http://www.mobiletextinput.com/
But definitely this keyboard looks better
It surely looks nice, and with a stylus it will rock, but don;t you think the friction will be a little too much for thumb writing?
I've seen the video on this programme (I think it's an interview by CNET). You sure can swipe around the keyboard fast.... but you need the engine to come up with the list of predicted words for you to select. If that can't be improved, while you will have an easier time to just 'swipe' your finger around, you may not be able to input your text a lot faster. You may end up spending more time waiting for the list to appear and select the desired words.
this is awesome but I feel strange..I think its impossible using swap the letters can appear exactly as we want..I mean when we want to write
"allready" how can we swipe over from a to l and how bout double l? hard to use i think

firstly.. its "already" one l..
but I read on CNET that it is actually really easy:
"Little tricks make it possible to capitalize words (jerk the stylus up and down) or select double letters (wiggle the pen over a letter)."
the only disappointing thing is that in the video, the portion that is actually on a WM device, the keyboard appears sluggish and there is a delay when entering words. hopefully thatll be improved!

i'm sure we can worry about the delay think when we get to the "using the keyboard" bridge... and give feedback, just like with any other app.

will be really hard to accomplish using this keyboard hehe especially for people who like to express their feelings with strange words
DarkAngelFR picked up this project and has a working app up and running... check out his blog @ http://blog.idlezone.org/pages/HTC/DarkRuler
original thread (how it started)
....A couple days ago i stumbled accross an App for the iPhone called RulerPhone and i thought it would be a cool tool to have for the diamond. Since our diamonds screen isnt multitouch, the tool would have to do without it and the lost ease of navigation could be accomplished using additional onscreen buttons.
Here is a basic explanation of the tool. Lets say u need to measure the with of your bookcase but u dont have anything to measure it. well you could guess how wide it is, OR you take out your Diamond, place a creditcard in the case and take a picture of the bookcase from within DiamondRuler. Once the picture is taken, you align the creaditcard from the picture with the placeholder on your screen using the touchdisplay, the zoom buttons on the display and the NavWheel. Once u have it all aligned you lock the picture and now you can start measuring your bookcase. the diamond will calculate the distances for you.
Is there a developer out there willing to take on the task? Let me know via PM.
Here are some Mockups of the GUI.
reserved for later use (maybe)
awesome idea
wow what a program!it is evolutionary!!
Flattering
If anybody would like to contact me about RulerPhone (I'm the developer) or inquire about development hints, please feel free to do so via the email address at http://benkamens.com/rulerphone. I am more than willing to share.
If the final design is going to be so blatantly RulerPhone-esque (to put it nicely...), I would appreciate a simple reference and link back to RulerPhone as the originating idea for what may be DiamondRuler.
Awesome idea!
I hate all these amazing iphone applications, getting very jealous of the iphone...
Must remember iphone GPS is rubbish....Iphone cant run all my favourite WM applications....
i remeber there was a ruler application for the N95..it could measure the distance between you and the object, height, angle...
certainly an interesting application to have
Nice whiskey collection! Nice idea for an app
Great idea !!
Should be really funny
@kamens : do you encounter special problems for developing this (I mean hard picture analysis coding...) ? I may develop this kind of funny tool for "windows mobile" but afraid of getting in hard "card finding algorithme".....
See Ya
DarkAngel
PS: excuse my english
no programmer up for the task?
i would code it myself, but by programmingskills just suck

Hello,
I made a quick develpment just to have fun with my HTC...Looks to work but I have many small bugs and small things I want to add in...
I will post soon a beta of my app this app will allow you to measure anything that fit in your screen when making photo ^^

Hello!
Beta Release is available, if you wants to test contact me by private message.
Will post the app in about a week if not many bugs found!
Thanx to testers and to fluid888 for the idea, to Kamens for its iPhone apps (thanx to a friend here for showing this to me "live", really impressive), to anyone in the beta, to the GSensor SDK Creator, .....
Ok I can see some potential for this if it can be calibrated to any accuracy. But how would parallax errors be dealt with and also spherical aberration could cause problems.
Interesting "bookcase" you have there fluid888, I think I might have read one or two of them myself!
lol
Sorry but I didn't implement any kind of spherical aberration algorythm yet lol... interesting but not really something easy to do!
Maybe in release 12.3.4.5 I will try to implement this let's make the v 0.1 working before
There was only one previous question about this issue, but no replies!
I was thinking of something like the HTC deskclock but working as a typical screensaver, i.e. it runs when the screen is off.
Any suggestion?
Astro
I dont think many people would use this.. As it is, most smartphone users are looking to increase their battery life, and the single biggest battery drain is having the screen on. Ontop of that, Live Wallpapers, and in extension screensavers, tend to use battery power like mad since they are constantly re-drawing the graphics. Docks (like cradle and car docks) are only useful cause they are general plugged in when in use.
The only way I could see them being semi-useful, is if you set your backlight brightness to very dim which would save you most of the screen on power loss, but you'd still suffer from the constant redraw and processing power.
A screensaver is (and that is not my opinion but a fact) probably the most useless peace of software that can be running on a smartphone (for arguments see the previous post )
Thanks for the replies.
However, a low consumption dim clock would make a great addition to android phones and would be a useful tool for the ones using their phones as watches as I do. I never meant to ask for a flashy screensaver such as the ones you find on computers.

That's still going to use up your screen and CPU. As previous posters suggested, it is not recommended, unless you want your juice to run out before you even manage to come from work. However maybe 'Digital Clock' does something similar that you need?
I believe it IS possible! All you need is to set the screen refresh rate to 1/60 a second, make it go to minimal brightness, make the text cover as small area as possible, make it grey, dark grey, and add the refresh cycle to the cycle where it checks for some regularities, like cell signal.

You can't do that. At least not without modifying the kernel...
And what is blocking you from doing that?

Very true indeed...
Is there any software that allows us to take notes by typing and drawing pictures on the same file? Like onenote does. (i know there are some where you can do it separately , but that is a huge annoyance in class)
Not sure if this is what you're looking for

Take a look at BlackInk. Not quite what you are probably thinking of. I have been using it for work and got rid of my paper notes altogether.
There sure does need to be an official OneNote app for Android...

The problem with this app is that you still need to type and draw seperatlly. There has to be SOME app that you can use to draw and type on the same file!
Try Handrite, http://www.appbrain.com/app/handrite-free-handwriting-note/my.handrite it allows you to write by hand or type from the on screen keyboard, you can also draw anything you like and it just scales it down and adds it to the line of text as if it was a type symbol.
If i did this for graphs, i would never understand what it is saying. Like in my economics classes we use supply and demand graphs, and i need them to be big enough to draw in detail
you can use tabnotes, this app allows you to handwrite and draw, at present, I don't think you can type which is the only drawback.
went with my sister to check out a house for purchase. she took out her galaxy note 2, took a picture of one of the rooms and after measuring it. she took out her note 2 s-pen to write directly on the picture she just took, drawing lines and writing down measurements. and man that was useful. this is samsung' proprietary software that comes with the phone. now is there any app like this for Android? i don't want to add notes or bubble text to the picture, i want to freely write or draw whatever i want on the picture i took. any program similar to this that would let me do this with my finger?

I would search for photo editors. Most, if not all, have the option to draw on pictures. For example, this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.picsart.studio&feature=search_result
It has a lot more downloads than the others, so I would go for this one. Just search for "photo" or something, and you should find a bunch.
