I9505 with absolute google os - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone.
Has most is aware, google struck a deal with Samsung to put Absolute Google on its flagship mobile Galaxy S4 i9505.
An obvious question, will there be a release for us current users to replace the bloat filled i9505 with the more streamline version of Google OS which would be updatable directly from google when updates are available.
Thank AJW

I think some sammy features are handy for me. The ones i don`t need or want can be removed. But it should be possible to flash that rom i guess on other I9500 devices.

Struck a deal? Lol

I believe that dev will be doing a nexus type of rom with no sammy apps.
if there is a need for sammy apps, e.g. for me is samsung email and s memo, i believe there will b apk to install.

Not necessarily, I imagine quite a lot of Samsung apps will require the Samsung framework which wont be present on a nexus-style ROM.

The Google Edition S4 will be available on June 26. It's reasonable to assume that the AOSP source will drop around the same time.

This is correct. TouchWiz apps, the camera for example, won't work on non-TW ROMs.

Well not sure what to tell you. I get one over Kies for my s3 what doesn't update because handset was modified. And when I check on my s3 I get no updates allowed because it has been modified. If I wipe the whole phone the update shows on my s3 but again I can't install it.

That's a really old release of 4.1.2. There are loads of 4.1.2 updates since then. That will be what you are getting prompted for. You're 6 months out of date.
I've been wondering when were they thinking about releasing this since the leak has been around since february (i think) and the S4 has been released already. But to be honest, I couldn't care less about those "features" for an update, all i want is multitasking fixed. Which i'm fairly sure we won't get. Samsung should stick with fixing the basics instead or pushing out mostly useless crap. Guess i'll stick with aosp and just get a nexus at some point...

That's not really the point.
Your point was Kies tells you there is an update and that it must be 4.2
My point is you are on a 6 month old release. Any update Kies tells you available is not 4.2. It is one of the 30 4.1.2 releases newer than yours.

I did think about that since i read somewhere about the extra sensors involved, i just thought they'd adapt or disable functions that really required them or at least do it in a different way that wouldn't need said sensors - there's software to mesure heart rate with the camera, which isn't the most conventional way and, to be honest, if someone told me before that was possible i'd most likely dismiss it as a prank app/gimmick, but i did see it roughly working

Why? It will have nothing on it you won't be able to get off this very forum for the I9505/I9500 eventually.
Well for obvious reasons. The stock android will run 100% perfectly out of the box and receive updates (android 4.3 for example), first before anything else.

Well if the hardware is the same but with stock android, you can bet roms from the Google Edition will find their way to the current version (i9505 most likely, but who knows, maybe it's octa this time around) as well and will work just as fine.
It's actually good news for those with the same version of the hardware.

Google edition i9505

Does anyone know when we might get the firmware for the i9505 google edition? I'm sure there is much talk about being able to flash this on a regular i9505. I would like to see this used as a better base for all aosp roms in the future. Do you think we have to wait until the 26th release of the device or will we get a leak?

Indeed. But given that it generally happens to Nexus devices, there is no reason to believe this won't happen to the Nexus edition of the S4 eventually. The binaries for the Nexus 4 were released in March for example and it now has full AOSP support.

But how much control will Samsung have over Google's policy in this respect? One would hope negligible if any, especially given that the backbone of the device isn't even based on Samsung hardware anyway. If Google's S4 was based on the I9500 it might be a different matter.

Do they? How much of the device is actually Samsung hardware that requires Samsung drivers? It's a Qualcomm device. Other than drivers for the bespoke Samsung features like Air View/Gesture and Smart Scroll etc (which Google won't be using anyway) I can't think of anything Google need off Samsung. This is exactly why making AOKP and CM roms has been so easy for the device. The first guy who created a CM rom did it without even owning one .

according to some developers here samsung put the touchwiz framework into the i9505G since it is required to run most of their apps. And unlike an actual Nexus phone the updates go from Google to Samsung and then get pushed OTA it shouldn't make a difference in the long run but that is what is causing the delay currently.
I actully like the touch wiz and thats why I bought the S4 .
if i wanted pure android i'll just buy Google Nexus 4.

Huh I find no issue with 4.2.2, its the best thing yet! We have spent so much time optimzing 4.2.2 that it is so stable and usable. Fast forward to 4.3 which is much newer we have spent much less time on it so for sure it is not as good. However I dont understand which part of either these versions, 4.2.2 or 4.3 is bloated care explaining? Even if Android 4.4 has so called less RAM usage and kernel improvements it would not really matter to us. Take kernel changes for example. We can't just port AOSP code and use it for our devices correct? Remember the time when we only had official 4.0 and 4.1 was released by Google. Everybody wanted Project butter. Due to Sammy not giving us official 4.1 and its source code on time (thank god they actually gave the source code..) we would never have gotten close to full project butter experience which we still lack fully. So if Sammy does not give us what we need then we can use 4.4 without its so called perks like "less RAM usage"
Yeah 4.4 should have lower hardware requirements. However, it doesn't matter because our exynos device still lacks proper drivers. That's worsen by the fact that we currently have no Galaxy S2 devs left working on CM to port new android versions to our device
