Great Speaker - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Do I just have a bunk device or does the speaker on the back just suck a large amount?

Maybe bunk? Mine's fine. It's louder than my old S2 and no distortions or anything.

Same as above, speaker works great, better then my S3 for sure.
Check out Fauxs kernel and his app Faux sound if you want to improve it even more.

First, i apprecuate the responses. I downloaded some music to my phone with different bitrates abd they all sounded good. Its only YouTube videos audio that is constantly distorted. Anyone know what that's all about?

Caller cant hear me solution (Voodoo)

called myself through my house phone and played with voodoo settings till i heard a difference. well, this worked for me:
in voodoo, scroll down till you see "Digital/Analog Conversion Quality Settings"
uncheck "Hi-fi record" (ADC 128x oversampling Maximize recordings quality)
rom being used: cynogenMod beta1
Voodoo Sound Plus 3.1.1
Upgrade to beta 2
The only setting that causes mic issues is the mic one the options are normal, balanced and loud something to that effect change it to loud and callers will hear you. The hifi record does not play a factor.
Holy double thread Batman!
shucks
the environments change the input volume and i think the hi-fi record turns on a gate. cause turning off hi-fi made a big difference to me cause people dont have hard time hearing me anymore and i dont have to touch anything. and i've always thought recording has to do with mic inputs. oh well....

I don't think so, I'm still on beta 1, but the voodoo toggle was the fix for me to get the mic to work properly, so I know they didn't fix it on Beta 1.

Beta 2 did not fix this issue in regards to what he's talking about, and without testing it yourself you shouldn't tell him he's wrong. I'm always told people can not hear me and I just did the same test with my home phone. With HiFi record enabled I could not be heard unless I put my mouth directly over the mic and talked very loud. With HiFi record disabled I could then be heard from a normal distance at which with it enabled I could not be heard at all from the same distance as if I were not even speaking.
Thank you for this. I'll test more later when my girl calls me and see if she can actually hear me ok or not with this disabled.

Some of us use voodoo sound with the stock kernel through voodoo sound plus. That's where it gets confusing. I'm not saying the issue is cm9. It's definitely this setting and/or voodoo sound in general. I'm just saying this is good to know for any of us that use stock cm9 but also inject the voodoo driver via the app.

This totally works i tried it on 3 different cell phones my moms epic touch my dads zte fury and my younger brothers transform ultra i think the way it makes things higher quality is it filters out more interference ergo wind static etc etc but in doing so the volume it can record at is severly lowered.

I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE.
I have a pair of ATH-M50s and these things are a beast!
So that being said, my PC, macbook, and iPhone 4S, before I traded it in for this, are really loud. The GS4 doesn't go loud as it should. I used poweramp as the music player, but it's a hideous music player and clogs up the screen.
Really upsetting that Samsung limits the volume for us to hear. Hopefully someone has a fix for this or something?

Seriously?? You think the volume is low?? I think the volume through both speakers and headphones is quite high and a lot clearer than my previous phone, an HTC Vivid, which utilizes "Beats" audio.
But I do believe that Beats on the Vivid was simply a software modification of the sound like an EQ adjustment, rather than anything like a hardware change.
And just for reference, I use a pair of Denon AH-D1100 headphones quite frequently.

On the newer htc phones beats is more than an eq setting. They have built in amps now for both the speakers and the headset jack.
I've honestly used all of the eq settings on most of my devices but it never compared to actual stock beats settings or how great voodoo sound was for older Samsung devices as well as the og Asus transformer.

The DSP manager in Cyanogenmod worked well for me. I have no desire to own anything that says beats. Just waiting for Dan to release his secret unlock. I use bose qc3's, they're no seinhesier's or AT's but they get the job done.

In call Sound crackling/distortion in receiver

I purchased the Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9500.
I'm facing a crackling/distortion during calls.
I got my handset replaced twice. My 2nd and 3rd handset after replacement also face the same issue.
I have given my handset again for replacemnt.
Anyone facing the same issue?
There's a crackling/distortion during calls at max volume.
+1
I have noticed that too. Beyond a certain sound, there is cracking sound. Happens on Airtel Network.
Yup!!!!!!!!
Same here. More audible when you hear the ring back tone. its like some thin film vibrating over the speaker.
btw I am on airtel too
Same here, when having a call I can hear a crackling sound, it's minor but somehow annoying. Right now I'm not worried but I'm thinking about how it might become a bigger problem in the future.

Fixed on MF3 :good:
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda app-developers app
I can also confirm that samsung has fixed the problem. I am using MF8.
I don't think this is a software issue, but a hardware one.
I disassembled an S4, I unmounted the earpiece speaker. It comes attached with 2 more sensors.
I made a test call with the back case disassembled so I could press with my finger against the earpiece speaker and the crackling noise dissipated away.
Its like by pressing on it the vibration of the speaker was limited and it sounded pretty normal at max volume.
As a workaround, I inserted a piece of low density foam (found in many packaging boxes) between the earpiece and the front speaker grill and the distortion appeared again, but fainter, after I mounted the back case (speaker assembly) and tightened the screws. Indeed, like others said, its best heard when ring tone is playing when calling someone.
The earpieces is found for $3 on ebay as spare parts, maybe I'll try a new one.
I really hope its not a Samsung design flaw. Check the pics. Thoughts?
I'm pretty upset. I paid a lot of money for this phone, it has a problem and I don't like to send it to service to get it raped by some uncaring hands. I would like to have it changed, I hope its not going to be a difficult process as many things are in my country after you pay the money. How hard was it for you to get it changed?
Has this issue been treated in other threads on the internet?
Little offtopic: the best in call sound experience I had was/is with Blackberry Bold series. They have a clear sound, crisp, no distortion, even with a little bass. Sounds solid. Too bad is that limited.
The problem is with Adapt Sound!, disable it in sound settings [Call Sound] and everything should be fine. Hope this helps:good:

Some cases make it worse. Loudness isn't the issue - blocked speakers is.
I do agree with the OP. Not really a smart design where placing the phone on its back effects the sound output due to the speaker being blocked. I use a custom back cover and its even worse than the original.

Ya some cases do, some will still allow certain amount of noise instead of being blocked when placed on cushion or soft grounds.
It'll be better if the speaker is at bottom beside the port area

Yes i am, but even without the case when the phone is placed on a flat surface the sound is a bit low, the case only makes it a bit worse, hats off to htc for the front stereo speakers, not to offend any of us but im sure everyone would love that on our s4, i agree with the post above the speaker should be on the bottom where the sound would not be blocked..but that's a small burden we have to carry on our back for such an amazing device

Bad sound quality on 4.4 custom Roms

Hallo,
I would like to make a simple question...
Tried 2 custom 4.4 Roms on my LG G2 (droidkangs and mahdis) and in both versions I noticed the same problem...
The speaker sound (even though loud) is of VERY bad quality when playing deeper sounds like basses!
In stock Roms the sound (same MP3) is crystallclear... Tried many settings in DSP manager... Tried almost everything I found in iNet, but I am going back to stock based Roms as on max volume its like my speaker is broken :/ (when I use headphones or BT headset I don't have that issue)
Could any1 please tell me what the reason for this problem is?? Is it normal that the sound quality from speaker is so much worse than the stock versions??
And can this be fixed?
Please, if some1 knows the answer just give me the info as I rly don't want to go back to stock Rom :/
Thank you!
I have the same problem on Cyanogenmod 11 and Paranoid .
CyanogenMod the sound is pretty low, on Mahdi's pretty high. Try equalizer settings on those ROMs. It might require a tweak to your liking.

Mahdi has same issue if you max sound... I think that all the 4.4 roms have this problem so flashing other customs won't help.
i never use the speaker because i thought it was terrible to begin with but i just tested it out and and mine does not get very loud but i use headphones 99.999.9999999999999 percent of the time but it is definately a bug but other than this bug i really havent had anyother problems
