I purchased the Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9500.
I'm facing a crackling/distortion during calls.
I got my handset replaced twice. My 2nd and 3rd handset after replacement also face the same issue.
I have given my handset again for replacemnt.
Anyone facing the same issue?
There's a crackling/distortion during calls at max volume.
+1
I have noticed that too. Beyond a certain sound, there is cracking sound. Happens on Airtel Network.
Yup!!!!!!!!
Same here. More audible when you hear the ring back tone. its like some thin film vibrating over the speaker.
btw I am on airtel too
Same here, when having a call I can hear a crackling sound, it's minor but somehow annoying. Right now I'm not worried but I'm thinking about how it might become a bigger problem in the future.

Are you airtel too? My collegue has an s3 on airtel.. high volume has the same effect on it.. on 75-80% of the volume its fine

Best time to test it is while dialing 121 customer support number on full volume

I have tried many I9500s and all have this problem.

Take it from me, it is normal.. my colleague who has the S4 told me that he does not have this problem. I personally checked it and realised that the problem is actually there.. but only some of us notice it.. keep the volume above 3-4th level and you should it be fine..

There is a new update on galaxy s4 india today. Update it and see if the problem has reduced. I feel it has reduced but it could just be a placebo effect..
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda app-developers app
i'm using MEA f/w and still have the crackling sound, but it's much better when using "clear sound" setting
Same here.. with clear sound enabled it it greatly reduced.

Fixed on MF3 :good:
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda app-developers app
I can also confirm that samsung has fixed the problem. I am using MF8.
I don't think this is a software issue, but a hardware one.
I disassembled an S4, I unmounted the earpiece speaker. It comes attached with 2 more sensors.
I made a test call with the back case disassembled so I could press with my finger against the earpiece speaker and the crackling noise dissipated away.
Its like by pressing on it the vibration of the speaker was limited and it sounded pretty normal at max volume.
As a workaround, I inserted a piece of low density foam (found in many packaging boxes) between the earpiece and the front speaker grill and the distortion appeared again, but fainter, after I mounted the back case (speaker assembly) and tightened the screws. Indeed, like others said, its best heard when ring tone is playing when calling someone.
The earpieces is found for $3 on ebay as spare parts, maybe I'll try a new one.
I really hope its not a Samsung design flaw. Check the pics. Thoughts?
I'm pretty upset. I paid a lot of money for this phone, it has a problem and I don't like to send it to service to get it raped by some uncaring hands. I would like to have it changed, I hope its not going to be a difficult process as many things are in my country after you pay the money. How hard was it for you to get it changed?
Has this issue been treated in other threads on the internet?
Little offtopic: the best in call sound experience I had was/is with Blackberry Bold series. They have a clear sound, crisp, no distortion, even with a little bass. Sounds solid. Too bad is that limited.
The problem is with Adapt Sound!, disable it in sound settings [Call Sound] and everything should be fine. Hope this helps:good:

Take the phone back to the seller .
Hardware fault .
jje
Yeah, I think it's a hardware defect. Is the phone in warranty? If so, just send it into a service, otherwise give it back to the seller, and ask the money you payed for.

My wife's having an issue where calls through the earpiece are hard to hear. You can hear an ambient sort of noise which sounds like its at normal volume but callers on the other end sound very quiet. She has resorted to putting every call on speaker to hear. Her mt4g is stock, non-modified/rooted. Any idea what the problem could be, or what I could try fix it? I tried searching, but the search on the mobile app isn't as easy to use as the full site.
Thanks!

Well this should be in Q&A but it sounds like hardware. Has she dropped in water or any other liquid? If not and you bought from tmo you should have a warranty to cover a replacement
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
I bought it 2nd hand a month ago, so no chance of warranty replacement through tmo. Was hoping there'd be a fix available without having to wipe the phone. The water indicator is still white and there doesn't seem to be any physical damage.

Hi.
I've got a weird thing with my phone (i9505). when i tap the screen at the top, or even next to the speaker, it sound like something is loose. Screen works just fine, touch also.
Does anyone else have this?
Could be manufacturing defect.
Should i return it and ask for a replacement?

I'm not sure if it's what you describe but I noticed that when tapped a bit "harder" or put to the table with a little force, there is a slight vibration which feels like something is mounted on "rubber"...not sure how to describe...it's more like a part has a buffer which prevents it from being damaged. It really might be the camera lens or some other part swinging and I don't think something is broken.
My S3 also hadn't that kind of feedback when tapped. However it doesn't make any noise so I'm not sure if it's what you mean...but also it might be that same part just being broken in your phone if it's rattling.
Probably just the vibration motor. If you hold the back to your ear and tap the front, it sounds hollow (or like a drum).

Try tapping the same area on a display s4 and see if you hear the same thing. A real display too not a dumby phone.
My htc Dna did this and it was the lens. Verizon brought out a brand new dna and it did the same thing.... Lol good luck

Virtually every device forum on here as the same thread.
Its part of the camera lens that moves internally is the answer on every thread.
Noticed the lens rattle too. Sounds unnormal, but I went to the Shop and the Galaxy S4 there had the same "issue" while tapping on the upper Display Area.

I just went to the ATT store for the same reason. There is a plastic cover over the camera lens. Peel it off, the noise goes away..
There is no issues never has been, never will be. Its the autofocus in the camera.
That's why I set issue in quotes It's a constant sound while using the S4 and tapping the top of phone. On my S4 sadly loud, but according to the store no reason for a warranty exchange.

My GS4 I9500 had a weird crackling sound when the vibration is set to high in calls or notifications. If I bring it down a step or two the sound stops. I have shaken the phone and don't hear anything lose. I have taken off the cover and the sound still persists. Anyone have this experience. Is this just the case cracking cuz is flexing or is this a bigger issue at hand?

You may have a defective unit. If you are able to exchange the phone for a brand new one, why not give it a try?

Anybody else hates the fact that ringtone sound is low when phone is placed on flat surface?
It's the only thing that i don't like on this device...

use a headset and it will sure be loud.
Use a phone cover or modify the loudness of sound.

Some cases make it worse. Loudness isn't the issue - blocked speakers is.
I do agree with the OP. Not really a smart design where placing the phone on its back effects the sound output due to the speaker being blocked. I use a custom back cover and its even worse than the original.

Ya some cases do, some will still allow certain amount of noise instead of being blocked when placed on cushion or soft grounds.
It'll be better if the speaker is at bottom beside the port area

Yes i am, but even without the case when the phone is placed on a flat surface the sound is a bit low, the case only makes it a bit worse, hats off to htc for the front stereo speakers, not to offend any of us but im sure everyone would love that on our s4, i agree with the post above the speaker should be on the bottom where the sound would not be blocked..but that's a small burden we have to carry on our back for such an amazing device
