How to configure swapper? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can any one know how to configure swapper?
I have installed and alloted 512 MB but when i check in terminal emmulator and type free...in swap its always 0
I am using CM10 nightly

it is very easy actually... i think u need to update ur busybox...u can update by busybox updater from market..
then u install swapper 2... u may or mAy not have separate partition for swap...in my case i juz use a swapfile...thats fine actually..
then u can configure the settings...actually u can put watever values...later u can change them to ur liking.
then on the swap...it takes afew minutes...then done...voila..
to check... open terminal emulator type
su
free
at swap section u should see some numbers... done...

What version do you currently have?
Did it come with your rom or did you download it?
You can backup your settings (export) to your sdcard and restore (import) with the new version if by chance your settings are not preserved.
Im using CM 5.0.8 ,and it came with 0.8.9.
And how do i go about doing that export/import?
Either download link from your phone and install or download on PC put on SD card open file manager and install are easiest. Put it on a friends phone. Looks good. Backup and restore are in settings adw.

Do a search for ADW.Launcher in the Market, it's there. Just make sure you have a period in between "ADW" and "Launcher."
Hey,
I'm interested in updating the ADW.Launcher version that came with my CM5.0.8 rom, but I don't know if it's OK to update through market or get the apk file and use "adb install" or find a zip file to flash...
Could anyone make some light in here pls?
Thanks!
I have tried downloading the apk file for my CM5x and MDPI device from Anderweb's page but when I tried to "adb install" I get...
INSTALL_FAILED_ALREADY_EXISTS
Can someone shed some light? Is there a way to update the ADW.Launcher that comes with a specific ROM version?
Tried using android commander?
Sent from my Chromatic Magic using XDA App
Since I'm new to this scene, what is the difference between the "adb install" method and using the Android Commander (which I need install)?
Would Astro help in this case, because I remember reading that has support for installing apk files?
I'd like to do this update as clean as possible.
Thank you for the reply!
PS: I have actually installed Android Commander and installed the ADW.Launcher apk for CM5x MDPI as an Update (wasn't sure what to chose between Private, Application or Update) and the installer said it was successful but after reboot I still have the old version 0.8.6
Any ideas?
U can download it put it on your sdcard and install with a file manager. Doesn't matter which way u go. Should work. Done it both ways

I did it somewhat the way you said and installed it with Android Explorer as an update because the regular installation would fail with the error that the application already exists.
The problem is that the new version gets copied into /data/apps/ and I can start using it but after the first reboot it's not there anymore and I get back to the one that came with my CM5.0.8 rom which is in /system/apps/
I would really like to get a solution that would update the one in /system/apps/ which might be harder because it's a memory mapped version of the ROM and changes get lost after reboot.
Please correct me where I am wrong...
Have u tried goin to the market and installing it from there? It's like version 1.4.1 or something now
Sent from my Chromatic Magic using XDA App
place the file on your /sd.
adb push /sdcard/filename.apk /system/app
restart home or reboot phone.
I ended up installing the one from Market and making that the default launcher, but I would really like to just replace the one in the system folder - no need to keep 2 versions of the same app
I'll try the method NetrixTardis was suggesting.
U can do it through the terminal as well. Maybe removing the old one will solve it. Use the rm command in the terminal and see if u can do it that way. Ex.
$su (enter after each line)
#rm /system/app/(name of app.apk)
Then u can use cp command to copy the one from your sdcard.
Cp /sdcard/(app.apk) /system/app/
Someone correct me if I'm wrong in the lines

hey johnson8cyl
I'll try that and let you know if it worked, should I copy it to the same name?
like /system/app/adwlauncher.apk is the name for the system app, while the Market installed one is org.adwlauncher....apk
do you guys know a good keyboard replacement and a way to configure the vibration alarm on my CM5.0.8? these are mostly the things I miss from my stock ROM
oh...forgot to mention the CM5.0.8 default camera does not have all the setting (like I can't set the ISO), is there one that does that trick?
thanks!
I'll answer the keyboard part. I've got Smart Keyboard installed and its a lot better than the stock Android one.

U have to use the names exactly the one your removing and one your copying. Names have to be what u want to remove or copy. That make sense?
Sent from my Chromatic Magic using XDA App
Makes total sense to keep the same names only that I have this problem...
any ideas? kinda makes sense because that comes from the ROM and is mounted as read-only
# su
su
# pwd
pwd
/system/app
# rm -f ADWLauncher.apk
rm -f ADWLauncher.apk
rm: can't remove 'ADWLauncher.apk': Read-only file system
ps: I actually managed to fix this what was missing is "adb remount" to mount system partition read-write
So you figured it out? Were you able to get it removed and replaced?

i didn't get the phone yet , so i can't give a defintive answer about what method worked
i'm afraid to get the and don't solve this ,
still searching for full answers
thnx my friends
by the way if i bought the phone then associated my mail with my phone in android market
can this makes me download the apps to pc from www . market.android . com or not
well, i just bought my wife one of these in abu dhabi ( i have an HD2 with android) and couldnt believe there was no market app.
when i say there is no app, there actually is a Vendor.apk in the system/app/ folder which is 0 bytes, read only and canot be overwritten or updated.
thank you samsung.
this worked using what i had already and another app, but if there is something easier let me know. i know i will lose it if i hard reset
NOTE: if words like 'terminal' and 'rooting' scare you, stop reading now..
1. first i rooted the galaxy with SuperOneClick from here in xda,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
2. then used com.beansoft.mount_system.apk to mount system rw (dont tick the box to remount at boot) its free from the marketplace... but, er, we havent got the market place
3. i have btep terminal emulator (paid) already and used it to copy Vending.apk to /system/app/ but you could get a free android terminal emulator from google and install it.
(i had to turn off XT9 in the Samsung keypad settings to type properly at the command prompt)
run the terminal and do like this ( i had copied Vending.apk to my sdcard/temp/ folder )
$ su
# cd /system/app
# chmod 777 Vending.apk
# rm Vending.apk
# cp /sdcard/temp/Vending.apk .
# exit
# exit
note above the space and . at the end of the cp command is important.
then restart your phone to rebuild the app cache.
viola, you have the market app (well, i did anyway)
NOTE also, i am quite sure if you realy tried hard enough and didnt follow this properly you could brick your phone.

[Q] Insufficient Storage :-/ What to do

Hey Guys whenever i download any apps from market i get the error Install Unsuccessful .... Insufficient storage ...
What to do :-/
Rom Hell Fire v7.2

delete apps or move some to SD card? If your memory is full it's logical you can't add apps
Sounds to me that a2sd is not properly set up.
I been having some issues running out of storage internaly. and after some fiddeling around with a2sd it was ok. And how to do it is posted in this rom's explanation on how to install it.

The ROM takes about 10 minutes to start for the first time since the beginning makes for a facility, I recommend formatting the memory trageta do a clean install or possibly delete the folders: ANDROID, LOST DIR ANDROID as these folders SECURE conflicts created by data from the old roms
I recommend making partitions ie swap64mb ext512 and the rest as fat32 mind too expensive or necessarily recommend formatting the card will memory or possibly delete the folders in the same android, haer all the wipes, the Rom takes a few minutes to make first start since being installed all the extras on the first boot takes 3 to 5 minutes, once this echo this start and made previous settings obligation is to do a reboot for full functionality telefeno
Installation of the rom:
1. reboot in recovery mode
2. we wipes all
3. selected to install update sip
4. restart the tlf
5. enter the terminal console and register the following:
his press enter
# a2sd cachesd or enter

Can u mention it Step by Step?
Hi all, i have same issue.
Yesterday i finally rootat my Wildfire and put Cyanogenmod 7.0.3.stable on it.
Its very nice!
BUT cant allways install apps from market. I have 87mb free on inside memory and 1,7gb in sdcard... So what is problem?
What i need to do? I can full wipe all my data from telefone if somone tell me how i can do this..
Can somone help?
Use dalvik wipe from xrecovery to clean ur phone data..

try istalling darktremor a2sd script (need to be istalled from recovery if not already integrated into your rom) and download a2sdgui from market, it's a gui for the script mentioned earlier. into recovery you have to partition your sd card too (advanced) 1024mb ext and i suggest 64mb swap, then open the app I told you (a2sdgui) and move everything to ext, dalvik cache too.
I agree with the poster above.
if you have issues with a2sd, I recommend installing A2SDGUI from market. (I assume you already have darktremors a2sd script installed). I had darktremors script working fine, but after flashing a zip file, it was not working. So I installed the A2SDGUI from darktremor and fixed the script. Now it is working. Just search the market and install it. It is great. Now I have around 168 MB free after all the installed apps.
Hope this helps,
SOLUTION TO INSUFFICIENT STORAGE:
1. Use FROYO+ default apps2sd. It gives the option to force moving of 95% of the apps to sdcard. Even root is not necessary. You can move 95% of apps only after using the adb command "adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2". This command is not even needed in cm7. And this method uses the fat/fat32 partition of sdcard not the ext partition. Specifically apps will be installed to .android_secure folder in the root of sdcard.
2. This method includes creating ext partition on sdcard and using an app called "link2sd". This is a root only app. No scripts are needed. That app has option to even link individual apps to ext partition. Also links dalvik cache.
3. Creating ext + swap partition and using dtapps2sd script. Root is required. Also custom recovery is required for flashing the script. This might be the toughest one but it is pretty awesome. Moves apps , data, dalvik cache to ext partition. Everything can be done with commands from the terminal emulator. Or you can use the "a2sdgui" app for graphical user interface.

The GUI for the script is much more user-friendly than emulator terminal. And you can undo everything you did if it's not as you tought faster than from terminal.
I am not aware of how Hell Fire works. But yes for Cyanogenmod 7 I know there is a issue downloading a large application from the market. It won't download. Problem is the space.
Fix for this is few steps:
1. In Terminal type the following commands.
2. su
3. mkdir /sdcard/download-cache
4. cd /cache
5. mv download download.bak
6. ln -s /sdcard/download-cache download
Done... Now Go to market and download anything you won't get such errors..
If It Helps Don't forget Press Thank Button.
Thanks a lot!
I just get my new sd-card( 16 Gb) and install darktremor a2sd script + a2sdgui.
Works just like it says!
No more thinking what program van install and what not....
Well I just installed the MOdd Again ... and I was done
Though i bought Samsung Galaxy ace as its my second time the Touch Panel doesn't work ... first in Tattoo and den in Wildfire

[Q] swap use?

the Q i wan to ask is how cn i use swap partion to speed up my g3 on any custom rom.......help needed
It s automatic if you have a custom rom. All that you need is a swap script. You can take it from kyrillos rom. And if you have the script you dont need to modify any settings, for view if swap is in use type "free" in terminal emulator

native swap does not work on cm9 android 4.0.3

hi,
i have followed the native swap tut but it does not work for me maybe the problem is that i have clockwork recovery 2.x.x ive done everything like in the tut and when i type free in terminal swap displays 0.
what is the problem?

you need the swapon file in /system/etc/init.d . just take one from any rom.
How can I open *.img file to extract the swapon file?
Can you give me the link for swapon file?
Google it or search on xda for 07swapon.

Do you have an init.d script called 07swapon in your /system/etc/init.d folder?
It only works on CM roms.....
If not, tell me and I will attach it for you
EDIT: File attached. Rename to 07swapon and copy to /system/etc/init.d directory
