[Q] Is it possible to flash CWM on my S4 using MAC? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have my S4 for 2 weeks now, I always have been a iPhone user but changed my mind for once..
I'm living in Belgium so I received the unlocked international i9505 version, i already rooted it with motochopper, but now my question is if it is possible to flash CWM on my device using a MAC? Since i don't have a windows PC.
Thx
Misha

Here you go, this is the Mac version of Odin: http://heimdall-frontend.mac.informer.com/
You can also flash a recovery from a terminal using adb and the dd command. But the above solution is probably easier.

yes; recoveries, firmware, modems, whatever

I have macs as well, and had to use my friends Windows computer to root. When I wanted to flash new version of cwm, I came across the app sgs4 flasher in they play store, and this will flash cwm via one of the cwm .tar files available for download in one of the threads in the development forums. Make sure it is a tar file not zip, or else the flasher won't be able to detect it.
It works flawlessly right on your phone, no need to use odin, heimdall or whatever.
Pm me if you have questions

Hi mate, OK so I have i9505 international, and ive downloaded frontend heimdall, now what are the specific steps on a MAC to install CWM. What link do i download first for firmware, and steps. I think if we can get specific steps done for this, it would be awesome as I havent found any specific and centralised set of steps.
thanks !!!!!

Use this app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2334554
It installs CWM or TWRP directly onto your phone without the need for a computer. It works very well. Hope this helped!

Samsung Galaxy S don't boot

Hey i got a Problem.
I tryed to install Android 4.1 second time on my device.
First time it ran perfekt but i had to remove it because gaps didn't work.
After i removed it i got a new Buildingnumber it changed from JVI to JW1 but there were no kernel to root my handy again.
So I tryed itt with my old rootkernel JVI.
But Odin stopped working and now my handy can't boot, the only thing that works is the downloadmode.
Every time i want to start it there is a telefon, a pc and a ! on middle of both.
And maybe it's important, i'm on Linux and i used a Windows virtuelle maschine to controll Kies and Odin.

That's called forced download mode. You need to flash a kernel with Odin. Pm me if you need the link for Odin. Search xda for a kernel. Also on a side note, for gapps you will have to flash it twice. Once will not be enough.

You can flash any ROM using odin as it will do the root for you. If you are a noob then try this link it has full detailed instructions and is a great starting point from which you can build on [flash over]

If you are having no luck with Odin, try using Heimdall.
1..Download Heimdall from www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/, preferably version 1.3.1 as 1.3.2 isn't quite as stable.
2. Download a firmware from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196179. The link also contains a decent guide by Aorth on how to use the Heimdall frontend to load i9000 firmwares.
3. Before following the guide, install the correct drivers to use with heimdall by putting your phone into download mode, unpacking the heimdall application zip and running 'zadig', (found inside the drivers folder). Under options, remember to tick 'List all Devices' and untick 'Ignore hubs or composite parents'. Install either 'Samsung USB composite device' or 'Gadget serial'.
Good luck.:fingers-crossed:
now it worked.
The new firmware runned succesfull but now my handy is bricked without a reason omg...
Now i have to fix it new?
Why it bricked without doing anything?...
huw much time should it need to get in recovery system from clockword Mod?

Clockworkmod is a recovery. What firmware did you flash exactly? Did you check the MD5? What did you use to flash (clockworkmod, odin etc)and what steps did you take to flash?
you can install Roms with Clockwork right? why it brick everytime i use recovery mode?
I installed the Samsung Firmware 10 times now i think.
to flash i the 2.3.3 Firmware from Samsung i used Odin.
And i want to install andorid 4.1 now

[Q] Rooted phone - can't flash rom and forgot to backup.

I can access CMW and download mode, but can't install a rom from CMW, and I don't have any backup. Anybody know what to do? You have to unzip this file and install the content with Odin.
After unzipping this archive you should end up witch md5 file and this is the file to put in to Odin

[Q] Rooting SGH-i337m on OSX with Heimdall

I flashed my old Galaxy S4 with odin on a windows computer by doing the pda thing and choosing that .tar.md5 file i was to extract or whatever.
How would I do the same using Heimdall on a mac? That is all I will have when my new S4 arrives thursday morning (got stabbed and mugged for just my phone)
I dont wanna use the motochopper scripts because they hardbricked my phone twice once i rebooted the device. Is that my only option?
edit: for example I know you can flash a a kernal in Heimdall -kernal kernal.img but is this the same as rooting? I thought flashing a recovery image was rooting'?
Also where am I going to find that .tar.md5 file or whatever for a canadian (rogers) galaxy s4 sgh-i337m
Edit2: androidayos.com/2013/05/31/root-i337mumuamdj-samsung-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337m/ I found the guide to using odin, so I just wanna use that same file the "CF-Auto Root tar file." but in Heimdall. any tips?
Rooting and a recovery are two different things. You can find stock firmware on xda or sammobile.com. From sammobile you'll download a zip which contains the.tar.md5
Ps, this could help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42320391
Pps, there is a guide for the s4 which I can't find right now. Google "heimdall s4 xda"

Idk, I've never seen Odin root a phone before. Usually you odin a custom recovery and then flash super su-busybox in the recovery.
Edit, maybe you can glean what you need from this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42320391

Hi,
I'm in the same boat. I've tried the Mac OSX terminal motochopper method to try and root my Canadian, Rogers galaxy s4 (SGH-1337M) which installed the Superuser app but did not actually give me root access. I've downloaded Heimdall and have the correct tar.md5 file for my phone, but have yet to find any instruction or tutorial for how to use this file in Heimdall.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check the MD5 before flashing? Are you absolutely sure the ROM your flashing is compatible with your device? Were you on the latest MF3 firmware before you started flashing?

it appears you have flashed an ATT rom for the i337 and not a Rom for the i337m -- you now have several options to restore your phone
1. flash the Loki'd fix to allow the kernel and rom you flashed to boot your phone or
2. flash a cutom kernel that does work with your phone such a Ktoonz kernel (read the install instructions, for your i337m you need the TMO version of his kernel) or
3 download the stock firmware package for your phone, I'd recommend MG1 either from a link on xda or from samMobile or Samsung updates and install using Odin -- this will completely reset you phone and then you can worry about root and custom recovery after
If you do decide to install fresh factory stock MG1 I can recommend using CF-root to root the i337m and then installing Philz Recovery rather than regular CWM as it installs more easily and plays nicer on the i337m in my experience.
Remember each phone is different but do not attempt to install ATT designed roms on your i337m unless you have the loki patch also on your SD card ready to flash also.
There are many great roms available that do fir the i337m and are specifically set up for our phone.
But first, let's get you out of the download loop. EIther of the 3 options above will do. Personally, I would recommend the Odin install of the stock MG1 firmware and start over with a factory reset and a clean phone.

Its not the ROM that's incomparable its the kernal your using. Find one for a i337m then flash it immediately after you flash your ROM and see if it works.

so just to go over the steps to make sure i dont mess this up,
so i flashed to the origonal versoin with odin
that worked
then i rooted it using CF root
now i got 2 files from philz and i'm not 100% sure what to do with them, i got a .tar what i assume i flash with odin and a .zip i'm not to sure what i do with they are both named philz_touch_5.15.0-jfltecan.tar.md5 and philz_touch_5.15.0-jfltecri.zip
then once i get into recovery i know how to flash roms, its just this whole kernal thing thats got me confused.

READ THIS FIRST:
MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE THE MF3 FIRMWARE ON YOUR S4. THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO RIGHT NOW. IF YOU DO, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL A CUSTOM RECOVERY.
You don't have a custom recovery already that's why. Did casual not install TWRP for you? If not try installing Goo Manager from the app market and try installing TWRP that way. MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU INSTALL IT, IT SAYS YOUR MODEL NUMBER EXACTLY! I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! When you have TWRP installed, then flash philz with TWRP and you'll have that custom recovery instead.

do not use the zip you quoted it is not for your phone
use odin flash the tar philz_touch_5.15.0-jfltecan.tar.md5
now you have stock updated MG1 firmware with the latest baseband
root by CF root
Philz Recovery
Now follow the next steps:
1. set up your google account play store etc.
2.next, go into the recovery and do a full nandroid backup -- this gives you a stable base you can restore when needed
3. go flash a custom rom, I highly recommend the latest version of Goldeneye -- updated, well maintained, great developer, clear install instructions
4. try itt then again, use recovery to make a 2nd nandroid, this one of your custom rom install -- try different kernels, every phone is different and someone's favorite kernel just may not like your phone -- doesn't make it a bad kernel just makes it the wrong one for your phone, flash a different one
5. theme if you want -- this is where your recoveries become important as themes are notorious for not always sitting well and all is ok if you have a backup you can return to
6. NEVER flash a baseband from another variant -- stick with your MG1 from your carrier until your carrier updates stock firmware

[Q] How to create twrp flashable images for Samsung Note 3 - SM-N900P

I did not find any procedures for creating twrp flashable images for our phones in the Note 3 groups. I found This link, and I want to ask if this is the procedure for my phone, which is a SM-N900P. I wan to be able to flash using twrp and flashify. I need to do this since my phone pc connection is bad, and when the phone is in download mode the pc does not see it at times. It take a number of reboots to get them to talk to each other. But when the phone is turned on, my pc sees it.
