Hands down, best Android phone I've ever had! It's better than I expected
The s3 is the first phone that I have not rushed to root and rom. I see no problems with it stock or any lack of features. I'm sure I will root sooner or later but this phone is seriously the top android phone released to date.

Yes, this is the first phone that I've been pleased with performance out of the box, and I even, dare I say it, LIKE TOUCHWIZ! I did root it, but only to use adfree, lol, that's the silliest reason I've ever rooted a phone for, but Samsungs are so easy to return to stock & T mobile never checks the binary flash counyso I'm not worried. I hate ads that are in apps! When we do get an AOSP rom ill flash then, but as crazy as it sounds, it better be as fast as touchwiz or ill be going back to stock, haha. Samsung hit the nail on the head with this one, and touchwiz has alot of convenient features in it. Imagine if they would've rolled it out with vanilla android, and the added motion control, and other Samsung apps that are pretty cool? If samsung makes this year's nexus, it's gonna be off the hook with hardware like this!
Worked like a charm.
I picked up my Verizon pre-order today and am super happy with it. It's a great upgrade over my old Epic 4G (and the bump from wimax to lte speeds is worth the extra monthly cost of the carrier switch)
I've always purchased the galaxy series year after year, and this time Samsung has delivered with stock performance! Though I also like the new touchwiz, it's more "complete" than other launchers

Friends.. Just wanted to share this.. I know a build is under progress for the at&t version .. but the 2 most amazing developers at CyanogenMod are now building it for the international version.. And the way they are going we should be seeing it in a few days as experimental builds.
1) @codeworkx : we all know codeworkx of team hack sung ..
https://plus.google.com/111398485184813224730/posts/aJHAEuhyfzM
And
2) @Koush : developer and maker of cwm .. rom manager and Dev at CyanogenMod
http://koush.com/post/one-review .. See the last part..
I heard cyanogen himself is getting one, so I'm looking forward to having the creator of the Rom itself

But I think he said that he was going to develop for the Qualcomm version of the S4, not sure though... A bit disappointed but we still have really amazing developers!
I have limited knowledge on rom development but I have flashed CM on my current GS2 so would like to ask a few questions -
1.How difficult is it to root and flash roms on HTC devices, the One in particular, compared to Samsung phones?
2. There was lack of documentation and dev support from Samsung's side on the GS2, how does HTC compare? Will CM have everything functioning?
3. How does the 2 button lay out work with CM? Can we configure the buttons?
The MSM8960 crew has already built CM10.1. Check the AT&T HTC One Original Android Development section.
Codeworkx is currently working along with them. Not sure about Koush.
I heard CyanogenMod is working on other stuff currently.

Just fyi, ATT version of the device is the same basically as international. My understanding is that there are currently two different variants: GSM (international+ATT) and CDMA (Sprint)
So, ATT ROMs will work on international devices. Trickdroid is known to work on ATT, and I have read somewhere an international user using CM from the AT&T section.

Correct, all GSM variants play nice with one another. So a Rom developed for ATT will work with the international version. People will have to be a little careful when s-off comes but typically devs do not include radio's in their Rom's.

yeah, not putting an AOSP rom on my phone this time. Too many issues in the past on phones like the sgs3 - not everything works 100%, camera quality is crap, battery life not optimized, etc. Sense 5 is pretty minimal and brings some good features.
How long do you think it will be until there are ROMs for the LG G2 on Verizon and the other carriers?
It is a little disheartening that there is hardly anything going on with this phone. One would think that the fastest smartphone in the world would get more attention than this.
Anyway, I am going to root tonight so that'll do for now. I'm really looking forward to AOSP and Cyanogenmod for the G2.

Man, you gotta chill out. The phones been out a week. Were lucky to even have root! With locked bootloaders, its going to take some time before anything happens, IF anything happens with it at all. The proper people are working on the issue.
Breath.
Relax.
Drink a beer.
Given time, roms will come. Use and abuse your phone until that point.

I agree, I'm pretty cool with the phone for now. But if you're impatient like myself, go ahead and root and remove bloatware, and see how close you can come to stock through that. I was able to get 50+ hours of battery time on my LG G2 ending today through a bunch of tweaks, so that was exciting! :good:

Are you able to remove the quick toggles in the status bar through "bloatware removal"? I know a lot of the status bar stuff is part of system, but was thinking maybe removing a few .apk's will get rid of some of it.

Right, like they have a workarounds for the s4 using bootstrap right? See So are we going to see issues here between cdma and gsm support like a few other devices out there? Example : I had the sprint HTC one and it got much less development because of partition differences from the gsm variants.
Since all moto x variants use the same base I'm assuming we won't need to worry about those kinda problems?
I'm curious because I'm hoping this device will have much more aggressive development and an active community. Since the phone is near AOSP I'm also wondering if we will have kernel developers like Franco and others.

I doubt we are going to see a very large Dev Community. I hope I am wrong. But since I haven't seen much interest by now - well - it just seems unlikely. Developers like to get new phones when they are brand new. And it doesn't seem to be happening. But I could be wrong. It would certainly not be the first time.

Or all the Devs were waiting on the dev edition...
Edit* I was thinking about this more. In many respects, the developers invest time, energy and heart, into "fixing" the devices... making them better via firmware and kernel tweaks. I have yet to aquire my moto x... hoping it will be at my door Monday, but from what I have gathered, this device is one of the best out of the box experiences of any other available phone... developers may recognize that their skills may be better appreciated and put to use on devices that would see more benefit. Not to say the moto x doesn't deserve development, but rather, that it may not need it as much as an s4, htc one or g2.
Now, the moto x experience can still be enhanced by development support, but, again without having the device yet myself, it appears as though many are getting, out of box, the experience that so many developers are striving to make possible on many of the other phones currently available.
Personally, I can't wait to have a phone, near or at stock, that is almost exactly what I have been wanting... A harmonization of hardware and software that doesn't sacrifice the efficiency of stock Android and doesn't skimp on usable quality features.

I, too, hope that we see decent developer support for the Moto X. I mean, the T-Mobile/Sprint versions have unlockable bootloaders, Moto just released dev editions which support cdma and gsm networks, the phone is available on all four major US carriers, so you'd figure we'd have healthy developer activity. Here's hoping that its just a matter of time.

Considering how close this is to AOSP, I'm sure a few devs might consider using the Moto X source as their base.
Nice to hear some development is finally happening but I feel for those who still have a locked boot loader, counting myself being one of the lucky ones who unlocked the boot loader. I guess no warranty suits me fine if I can flash roms

There is no doubt there will be stock blur based ROMs. With phones available on every carrier with unlockable bootloaders, two working recoveries, we should see them popping up soon. AFAIK the only thing that is not quite right yet is the updater script.
Now that this rom is released, does anyone have any idea how long something like this would take to port over?
I'm not sure if it's an easy thing or not. I know AOSP was pushed almost same day, albeit being buggy.
I'm pretty excited to get the update on my AT&T phone, however I don't remember how long it took for the 4.3 to be released for regular models.

Awesome! That's where I got my 4.3 GPE rom, thanks for the update dude!
I'm not an expert on this, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.
By what I understand, the Google Edition ROM runs with little modification on the AT&T S4. The main hurdles are with the kernel, which has to be modified slightly to run on the AT&T S4. Once a developer is able to modify the kernel to run, porting the rest of the ROM over shouldn't be a big deal. The developers are pretty brilliant and quick on this stuff, so I imagine you'll be seeing ports of the GPE ROM here pretty soon.

Basically. I mean, there isn't a significant difference in the hardware between a normal Samsung S4 and a Google Edition S4, except the LTE chips used for retrieving signal (depends on your carrier). So that being said, the kernel shouldn't be a big deal and the ROM shouldn't be either. I'm really hoping to use Kangakat as soon as it's released, I'm a BIG fan of Kangabean and have been using it along with Omega ROM with dual boot. Can't wait for this! Thanks for the good news!
