I had my nexus side by side with a Droid last night. And I noticed that when the AMOLED screen on the nexus dims down. it gets REALLY red and distorts the contrast/colors alot.
Is this normal? When my brightness is at a normal setting it looks great. its only when it gets dim. Im a little concerned.
its fine, thats just how AMOLED displays work.
I can't agree that it's fine ... if colour infidelity is part and parcel of AMOLED then maybe HTC should reconsider their use of it. I notice the red tint at all brightness levels but it's most noticeable at the lowest level.
I always have the brightness at 0% and automatic to off when not plugged in. Don't see any severe redness.
well, I guess it's not normal , I got my frist one with dead pixel but the color is bright so I did a refund as they recomended and buy a second one but this one came with redish screen..... I did the comparison and the one with the dead pix is a lot more brighter , so my luck sucks
This is my second nexus, both have pinkish hue when on lowest brightness
I haven't noticed any red/pink issues at any brightness with my phone, but I haven't done any side-by-side comparisons.
Call HTC support and see if this is a known problem they fix or if it is just part of a normal working Nexus One.
It's a part of a normal Nexus One. My friend had the red / pinkish hue on his screen and called HTC for a replacement. Once the replacement came, it was exactly the same hue. But with 50% brightness, it isn't noticeable. However, I'm probably the lucky one because I don't experience the 'problem' with 0% brightness on my Nexus.
Some nexus one don't have the red tint, I got 2 nexus one and one have the other doesn't show any red tint even at lowest brightness. I guess its just difference screen from difference suppliers.

I agree with this completely.
so i have three epics in front of me, all on stock roms, all with brightness as low as possible, BandB brightness control widget shows all of them at 9% which is the lowest i can set them too, two have a yellow tinge to their whites, whereas mine is pure white... theirs appear to be dimmer and at max brightness its tough to distinguish any variances... im not sure if i should be happy or sad that their lower brightness would appear to give them better battery life

Mine is yellowish. Disappointingly-so,
Mine is pure white, on all low and all high.

Same here, no screen problems.
Mines has the slight yellowtint

There seems to be some variance in screen color temperature. I was at the sprint store a few weeks ago and the display Epics all had cooler color temperatures and my phone was warmer.

The power savings mode settings changes the screen color on mine from a whiteish color to a greyish color. Also, my epic has an EXTREME blue tint when you are looking at it at any angle other than straight on. I have looked at a dozen other epic 4gs and none even approach how blue mine gets when looked at sideways.
I've also got 2 Epics, one with a yellowish tint which looks dull compared to the other at the low settings.
I noticed that between the lowest setting and going just slightly up a notch, the yellowish one has a lot of brightness difference, while the white one has very little difference in brightness.
Did anyone notice a difference in battery life? My white screen one is stuck at DG17 and the yellowish one is on DI18, so I don't think I can do a fair comparison.
I'm still within my 30 days, so I'm not sure whether to trade the yellowish one for a new one or stick with it..
Hi
I just noticed something weird going on, the more black I have in the screen the brighter the whites get. Asif the more oleds are turned on its draining more power and making the other oleds loose overall power.

CONTRAST.

To expand, the more black there is around the white, the more white the black seems in comparison, that is contrast.
And as the AMOLED pixel is its own light source the contract is already very high, as a black pixel is an off pixel not giving out any light.

Hence why having a black background saves power and also lessens the chance of screen burn on amoled displays.

For me it is the "Auto adjust screen power" on display settings menu.

Yeah, definitely that. This function is on by default and limits the maximum power drain of the screen, so if there's a lot of white (or bright colors) on screen it will limit the overall brightness in order to save power.
I think it's very irritating and disabled this feature about 1 hour after buying the phone and never turned it back on.
Thanks guys. Auto screen power definitely the culprit. The screen is allot more uniform and "normal" now. Nicer to use.

Hey, to those who already have the galaxy s4 can you confirm with me if its noticeably brighter than the galaxy s3? I know it's 258 lux in comparison to 213lux on the galaxy s3 but in real world use does it help a bit with sunlight legibility? Also is the screen less reflective than the s3?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Yes and yes. I wouldn't call it the best phone to use in direct sunlight but it has improved quite a bit from the S3

Yes brighter. Same reflective to me. Overall, love S4 new 1080p screen.

- Brightness: Oh well, the maximum manual brightness is not as bright as my Note 2 (A Brighter Note app activated), but outdoor visibility is way better. Under sun light with auto brightness, white is whiter (brighter), black under s much less blueish - mean darker. I can feel better in reflectiveness also. I think most reviewers forget to turn automatic brightness on.

According to DisplayMate, on autobrightness it gets extra 30% brighter than on manual max.
Hey. Last night I noticed my SGS4 has a very reddish tint to an all black screen, compared to my SGS2 which is truly black (no light emitted).
During the day it is not noticeable but in pitch black you can see a strange dark red glow in black areas.
Anyone else experienced this?

Take a picture of it. If the screen is faulty, better replace it.
I'll try to make a picture later tonight. With the naked eye it was easy to see...

My issue: the red subpixels stay on, this is the SGS4 and SGS2 viewing the same 100% black image.
If any black background has visible red tinting to it you should definitely contact Samsung or the store.

Sorry that I sold my phone already (check my thread), but I did try to do it but it's not as noticeable as seeing in the real life, or my cam is not enough for capturing the screen correctly
To see the red blacks you have to be in a very dark room. Mine has it too.
The only thing I dont like about the screen is that Samsung seems to have omitted the antireflective/oleophobic coating around the menu and back buttons, making fingerprints on the buttons stand out

Thanks. Samsung told me I could send it in for repairs as they didn't know when an update would show up.
I think I have a problem with my phone, but not too sure if it's normal. I got my phone last Friday. Whenever the screen's on a grey or white background I get discoloured faint thick lines going down it. It is like a hologram.
Just wondering if anyone has the same and how are your display's like
Thanks
your screen is defective, or your gray page isn't actually solid gray. go into a drawing app and make a solid black or white or gray page and confirm it's actually the screen and not the apps you're using.
there's no burn in on amoled. only defective screens

You can also test your display dialing the code *#0*# and checking the 3 solid color screens (red, green, blue).

As far as i know Amoled suffers in burn in. My friend's S1 and my S2 has it. Noticeable especially in low brightness. When backgrounds are gradient of black to gray, the screen looks dirty on low brightness. I saw an S3 on Samsung shop had a very visible burn in of a clock widget even on max brightness.

Due to the different aging characteristics of the individual subpixels you will get a burn-in like screen after a while, especially where content is frequently shown. Like the clock in the notification bar. After a while/few months that spot will be seen when watching a solid colored background for example. Is the case on EVERY amoled screen there is.
Thanks for the replies.
I have tested it using a lcd test app and it is noticeable on a solid grey or white background. It's patches of faded pixels.
Was wondering if anyone with a S4 has the same problem and where would I stand with getting it replaced.
I can understand that amoleds suffer from screen burnin after sometime but not when it's brand new. My old s3 is perfect and I've had that for nearly a year.
Thanks
IMHO get it replaced.
My S4 also does this. Black and white are very good, but grey isn't very good. Check te picture below. I have also added the picture I tested it with.
Should I return it?
