So, hopefully this will get ported quickly and fix some of the issues with the current Gingerbread roms...
Wow, great news

I am just curious if this is really as good of a report as it sounds. If as some of the comments said it is really an i9000 variant will it have any impact on the tmobile vibrant?
pretty sure the vibrant in canada is more similar to the i9000 so actually it wont help :-(
On a side note, can someone explain to me exactly which part is holding us back?
To my understanding there are the following different parts of the system:
1) The baseband/modem
2) The kernel
3) The actual rom (froyo, gingerbread...)
So why can't we update to gingerbread once we have the AOSP (which was released right?) Is it because of the drivers specific to our vibrant as opposed to a stock i9000?
that is my understanding, the specifics that are unique to our device such as drivers and modems. the ones from other builds are not compatible. but again that is only my understanding and I in no way claim to know for sure. I could just as easily be wrong as I could be right.
the vibrant is different, its a variant of i9000
A few here are correct, the Canadian Vibrant is actually the I9000M.
We really don't have another phone that is akin to the Vibrant. The I9000 variants have some things that are very similar and others that we have to fix and work around. Same holds true for the Captivate.
We can get close to 100% but may never actually get there without Vibrant specific firmware.

it has an lte radio.
I think he was referring to whether it was gonna keep the exynos quad.

Supposedly it will still have quad core & 2 megs ram with LTE. Gonna be a monster. My next phone for sure.
The only thing that bothers me is that I have not seen the FCC reports but usually come out before a phone is released...
But I haven't been following it as closely as I was with the note 1...

It looks like the days of Qualcomm-based mutant derpbeasts are over.
http://vr-zone.com/articles/samsung...ipset-shows-up-in-korean-galaxy-s3/16442.html
There is finally an LTE/GSM dual-mode modem available from someone other than Qualcomm.
People have occasionally said "the Exynos 4 Quad isn't compatible with LTE" - This is false. Nothing in the CPU makes it incompatible/compatible - the only issue was that until recently, Qualcomm was the only company that had LTE/GSM combo basebands available, and Qualcomm won't sell their modems to someone not using their CPU.
A non-Qualcomm baseband chip changes everything.
I probably should've noticed this long ago - but CMC221 references have been cropping up in Samsung's source releases for a while now.
Edit: CMC221 seems to be an older chipset, there's a lot of conflicting info on exactly what is going on. Either way, it looks like Samsung now has access to SOME sort of baseband chipset that isn't from Qualcomm, OR Qualcomm has changed policies and is now selling LTE basebands that can be paired with non-Qcom CPUs.

Unknown. I need to do a lot of research. I've been really angry with AT&T's handling of Samsung devices, to the point where my plan until today was to ditch them for Straight Talk combined with international unlocked devices when my contract was up.
Nonmutilated LTE devices might change this... I'm still not sure, it still remains to be seen whether this new generation of LTE chips doesn't have the severe battery life penalties older LTE implementations did. Also, I'm not eligible for an upgrade until February and I really don't want to give the asshats at AT&T money for a full-price device just for a feature I likely won't use.
If ONLY the AT&T variant is capable of AT&T LTE - Maybe (I live in the boonies, I won't see LTE for a long time)
If the international variant supports the AT&T LTE bands - Hell no for the AT&T variant (say no to unjustified carrier mangling), possibly for the international variant.
Cant wait to see whats up with this on att! Glad i have an upgrade. If it is guad i will give my mom my s3!

same. I have a SGS2 with a cracked screen. At&t already said they will allow me to use my wife's upgrade, but i don't know if i want to wait for the N2....but maybe i should. I almost jumped on the S3 this weekend, but i didn't. I had my reservations about the rediculousness of using the Note as a phone, but then again, i've made probably 2 calls on my S2 in 10 months. So I may have answered my own question.

Current rumors indicate it has the quad.
They appear 'hardware equivalent' enough that I wonder if you can flash international ROMS onto it.
I guess that's a pipe dream though, since it has a different model #, implying different hardware somewhere.
The N7000 was fun that you could flash different country's roms onto it - less waiting for new features.
I guess at this point I guess it'll mainly depend on when it gets released to AT&T.

It may be similar enough to only require a porting package.
For example, these were the differences between the SGH-I777 and GT-I9100:
I777 had a different call audio interface to the modem - I9100 modems and kernels would not work, but only a few kernel changes were needed to fix the kernel side of things.
I777 had a different microphone configuration - Swapping libaudio out would fix this initially, with ICS I reverse engineered it to the point where only a kernel change was needed
I777 had NFC - If you didn't mind it not working (note: did not work on I777 firmwares ANYWAY), didn't need to do anything when flashing an I9100 firmware. Actually, thanks to the I9100P it was easier to get NFC working on I9100 ports than I777 bases...
I777 had the typical USA touchkey configuration - needed a small kernel change and a keylayout change
The above meant that it was possible to develop a nearly universal porting tool for all Gingerbread firmwares, and once ICS kernel source was released, same for ICS firmwares. The main disadvantage was you couldn't do anything with I9100 leaks - kernel source was required.
CDMA users will be screwed - too many differences for a GSM firmware to ever have any hope of being cleanly ported to a CDMA device. (Exception being AOSP bringups.)

Here is some information that looks good.
http://www.techspot.com/news/50091-...2-coming-to-all-major-carriers-in-the-us.html
Galaxy Note II reported to arrive at AT&T on October 21
As the Title say's - Galaxy Note II reported to arrive at AT&T on October 21 -- [Android Guys]
PLEASE DON'T LET IT BE ANY LONGER.
I'm patiently waiting for my 8.0 to arrive. While doing this I've skimmed through the forums and such gleeming information. The 8.0 has been out since April / May and it seems compared to the other Note products that I've owned (all three of them) the ROM development and general traffic seems to be on the light side.
Not criticizing.
Is this because the devs are waiting for a source to drop? Is this because the majority feel that Samsung has made a solid product (hardware and software) that there is little to adjust or complain about the product (which is a good thing) Or the last not so good scenario that thus is not a very popular device because of odd size, design, price point, economy, cheaper alternatives, waiting for something better?
I don't want to do the usual "Dude, thus place is Dead! Why?" Lol.
I'm interested in what others who have been here longer feel about this.
Thanks.

I just got my note 8.0 (international version n5100) few days ago. Although you are right there isn't much development going on. The problem is that most of the developers are in USA. The US version of the Note 8.0 (at&t) and the Canadian version have yet to have root. So that is why you don't see much activity around here. Once the At&t version can be modified. I would expect more developers to show up.
Best buy and such is just selling the WiFi version anyways sent they?
I guess that brings me to another question from what I've noticed: are people buying this mainly as a 3g device to use as a phablet? AFAIK mine will just be a WiFi only.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
Yes Best Buy is most likely selling the wifi version unless they made you sign a contract that is a safe bet.
There are a bunch of Note 8.0 which makes me believe we will most likely need another sub forum once the North American Note 8.0 have a development scene. Since they have slightly different hardware. earpiece removed etc.
Since the At&t model only have data no phone or SMS. Most people have either the LTE model or the wifi model. Only the wifi model has a development scene.
Custom roms would be nice for some fun but I'm very happy with stock rooted. It's a solid device.
Sent from my GT-N7100
I'm all for custom roms....But, I like the stock rom very much. I chose the 5100 because it offers everything in one package. If I need to make a phone call, no problem. Send a text, I'm covered, plus wifi. Would loved to have had LTE but with T-Mobile 3G+ I don't feel rained on!! And yes I live in a refarmed area. For me, living in the U.S., the 5100 3G is the best option. In other countries that were offered LTE (voice+data) that would be the way to go.
The reason I go with Samsung in general is because I don't want to have to flash anything custom. Over the 5 years or so of owning Android, I've been through a lot of devices, and I can't begin to imagine how much time I've wasted flashing, restoring, backing up, etc, etc. There are more important things to life than customizing your gadgets. In short, I don't care whether this place is dead, active, or whether there is a single custom ROM or kernel out there for this device. Samsung provides a solid device that performs well, and they are about as up to date with updates as can be reasonably expected. I have no complaints.
Just as an aside, I've flashed many custom ROMs and kernels to my previous Galaxy S3. All of them made my performance and battery life far worse than stock, and most of them had serious issues with their themes.
That's maybe because you made poor choices on your Rom selections. It's definitely true there are nightmare roms out there.

No way man. I've always had the same issues with custom ROMs over the years. Stock has been the best since ICS hit. Most custom ROMs except the ones that are modified stock have issues.

Well I agree with that. As far as Samsung goes it is true that you're better off staying on something touchwiz based. This is true. All the CM and aosp stuff is plagued with problems. You're right about that. I actually like touch wiz ROMs especially for the note 2. Looks like the same with note 8. Once you lose the spen features you kinda lose the whole point of havin a Samsung device with spen. You're right
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2
Personally I just care about root because it opens up a lot of useful apps. Otherwise I haven't had issues with stock ROMs.
Sent from my GT-N5110 using Tapatalk 2
I wish more no pc root options were available. Tried framaroot so I could install a few apps and small mods but haven't had any luck. I think stock rooted with small mods is best for the note. I had a transformer TF300T that I highly moded to get it to run at the speeds I now have on the note 8.0.
I think over time and with 4.2.2 or 4.3 the note 8.0 should see more in the development area.
Sent from my Note 8.0 N5110 16GB
Rooting is always the first step for me and although custom roms are a handy shortcut there are many Xposed modules to help you to customise your device yourself.
Galaxy Note 8.0 Build JDQ39.N5120XXCMG7 / Baseband N5120XXBMD9 on Telstra LTE
Thanks for opening this thread! The lack of custom Roms was one of the first things I recognised after buying the Note 8. I came over from a NExus 7 (2012) and as was stated here before, modding just took a lot of time from me. First it was fun to try out CM, AOKP Paranoidandroid etc. and these guys really have some good features. But I never kept a ROM longer than a few weeks because they were all horrible slow - still better than stock though. In the end I realized that it was the device itself that kept getting slower due to hardware issues and the custom ROMs just eased the problem because of the wipe I did every time. My phone is a HTC Evo 3d that also needs a lot of attention due to (in my opinion) horrible stock ROM.
Now after reading this thread and thinking about my experiences with the Note so far I have to admit I'm pretty happy with it. I Also don't care that it is still on 4.1 because 4.2 on the Nexus was just a pain with all the bugs and extra features were rare and useless for me. with 4.3 it seems to be the exact same story. So for now it's okay. Especially since I installed my favorite launcher after trying out TouchWIz
I just hope to see a good Android 5 ROM someday with S-Pen functions and so on, but that story isn't written yet

So what are the differences between the n5100 and the i467?
telephony capability
LTE radio
ear speaker
ability to act as wifi hotspot
Anything other differences?
I like touchwiz. But I want cyanogenmod. I used cm on my s3 for more than a year.
I hope cm will be available for n5100 soon.

Does the Spen work with the CM roms?
Steve
Even though I was planning to leave Vodafone yesterday for Three, I ended up deciding to stay with Vodafone as it would have been too much hassle going for a credit check plus waiting for three days if I was successful for my application whereas Vodafone's 4G service is going to be better than Three's.
In any case, I got my Samsung Galaxy S4 today and I'm really liking it so far although I'd like to know what the best Custom ROM and Modem are for the UK Vodafone Galaxy S4 as I want to root it like I did with my Galaxy S2 which I'm keeping as a emergency phone but unlike that one which has Paranoid Android installed on it, there doesn't seem to be a version of that available for the S4 yet.

Only you can decide that. Look up the proposed features of the S5 and then see what the S4 offers and make a decision. I would wait until it is definitely known what the specs and features of the S5 will be because it's just speculation now. Also, do as much reading as possible. Just about any possible question about the S4 has been asked and answered, just use the search function to find those answers.
One more thing. If you wait for the S5, wait until the developers edition or GE edition is released. Maybe even get the International S5 version if it is proven to work with AT&T LTE (which it should). DO not get the carrier branded version unless locked bootloaders and bloat is what you are looking for. Also, look into the KNOX issues to see if it further cripples the phones ability to be customized. If it does, you will probably be better going with another brand. But, like I said, you need to read and decide for yourself. Good luck.
Personally I don't think it's worth the wait. As for the s4 it's a good phone but there are other great phones out at the moment. If I was in your shoes I would consider the nexus 5 HTC one and LG g2 as alternative options. There is the note 3 but that depends on if your willing to carry a 5.7 inch screen with you.
Also now that I've had the s4 for a while I honestly got bored with it. I was hoping 4.3 would breath life back into it but it's just about the same. As for safestrap it helped but shortly got bored with ROMs and went back to stock. For my next upgrade I'll try another brand.

The future of flashing custom Roms is getting harder with new phones coming out so keep that in mind, if you don't mind not flashing custom Roms than the s5 would be a great phone.

Stay far away from the official ATT S4, they locked this phone down so tight, no custom Recovery, no flashing fresh new ROM's. It totally sucks, and is a very disturbing trend from ATT. Even the new Note 3 got the shaft Development on the ATT Note 3 is NONEXISTENT.
Even though I do love my S4, great smartphone, but if you get an MF3, or MJ9 version, your screwed.
If you got the cash, and want an S4, get the Google Play Edition, or find an International S4 on eBay.
I sure hope ATT isn't going to continue this in the future, locking down all new phones, and killing development ?
At least the ATT HTC One is totally developer friendly, it can be rooted, recovery, and S-Off no problem.
