Is Google's Stock S4 comparable to i9500? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Google announced a pure stock android version of the S4 phone. Does this mean all the Samsung features like "TV Remote", smart camera and its features, multi window, air view, air gesture, smart scroll .. etc will be completely removed in google's stock version?

Yes they will be removed. It will be pure AOSP Android which it is running. And the hardware will be the Qualcomm version very likely (i9505)

I know Samsung's software takes a lot of space and is not "beautiful", but the S4 is what it is because of all those features.. AOSP makes it faster and more reliable, I just dont think i would like to swich to a google gs4 while i already got this one

Everyone has its preferences.
For me, all the features of Samsung are completely useless.

What features will be in there is unknown at the moment.
Google could write their own remote control app.
We'll see....

But you could perhaps flash an AOSP rom and install apps that do almost exactly what the stock rom does, and enjoy the best of both. :good: Camera app is the only one I'll miss.

Nexus ROMs still utilize the device's abilities so I'd imagine the sensors will still be usable either out of the box or via Play Store or even Samsung store apps.

Not really.
The Samsung apps require Touchwiz framework which means it will have stock aosp camera, and no those modifications that are on touchwiz.

Still, the sensors will work, you bet on that, maybe via external apps. Remote control and weather measurement abilities, these are HW related stuff, and won't be rendered useless.

+1. Debloated and tweaked Touchwiz ROMs anyday for me over AOSP.

It's better to have some useful features in the system partition rather useless empty space

It's not comparable to I9500 but to the I9505 (because it has LTE).
I9505 has CM10.1 already, so yeah... Nothing special.
I9500 has Exynos which is not well documented and aosp will never run well on it.

Smart Stay on Nexus 4?

Somebody have infos about implementing that feature to Cyanogen or other roms.
I think this is the only useful feature in touchwiz, so why not implementing that in Cyanogen for example?

Probably because it is not open source but original Samsung software.
-Edit- here is an app on Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beansoft.eyespy.free&hl=nl, Nexus devices however seem not to be supported.

Smartstay ex works with Nexus 4 but breaks rear camera app. Always FC when smartstay ex is running. May be next update will fix it and will be able to use on N4 soon.
Screen Timeout is what I use and it's awesome.

loss of features if not using stock rom?

just ordered my note 10.1 yesterday. should be here next week!
i have an s3, and i just updated it to the latest version of AOKP.
of course i'll be rooting it but i was wondering if anyone thought the tradeoff to using a different rom was worth it. i got the note for work (mainly notes and powerpoints) so i'd hate to not be able to use any of the features that really set it apart from other android tablets!
My personal experience left me inclined to stay with a touchwiz based custom ROM, some extra power and flexibility without losing anything. CM and AOKP are nice as always, but on this particular tablet I really find features like multi window, smart stay and air view to be well worth their weight. There's a growing selection of roms that retain all of the Note's features. I really liked Android revolution a lot, am currently on Collective edition. You can even enable all apps to multi window, which is just savvy!

That's what I was thinking. It'd be a shame to go vanilla and lose all the features I paid extra for! I'll check out some touchwiz based ones then.
Yep, I Cant Understand Why People Pay Premium $$$ then Go Vanilla Android And Loose All those Features They Bought The Note For In The 1st Place.... Each To Their Own...
Just Be Aware Too, Because Of All The Tweaks And Things Running In The Background You Might Find Your Battery Draining A Lot Faster... At Least, That Was My Experience. Went Back To Stock Rooted And Battery Lasts Longer...

I'm thinking I'll do the same thing I did with my phone: wait minimum 2 weeks before I start messing around. That way I have a good base to judge things like battery life compared to stock.
Thanks for the advice everyone! My Note should arrive on Monday!

Heh okay. I never did that with my S3! I probably should then.

I bought this tablet for the Wacom technology and s-pen, combined with the excellent hardware. All of that is perfectly fine in AOSP. Palm rejection, s-pen support, etc.
I did not buy this tablet to have multi view, but I can see where that would be a non-negotiable.

I'm sure at some point I'll experiment with an AOSP rom. I always wind up back at those...

I tried "Android Revolution HD" and "Omega" ROM, both are very nice and are touchwiz modified roms.
You should check them out.
Android Revolution HD
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119547
Omega
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2131474
One or both of them may use Aroma installer so may want to stick to Zedomax "HighOnAndroids CWM".
Zedomax also has a post "How to ROOT Galaxy Note 10.1" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831152
And here is one of his many .coms that he has that has an embeded step by step video on how to root you note 10.1, his root method includes CWM that does work with Android Revolution HD and Omega ROMs. http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-note-10-1-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-10-1-easiest-methodcwmmethod-2/
TIP: I download the video of Zedomax root process onto my computer along with the files needed to root so I have them all in one place.
.
Whoa! Thanks!!

Most of the roms remove many bloatware apps and battery life improve

+1 - It Must Be The Custom ROM He's Using; Perhaps The Keyboard Is Broken In It
Kidding aside though, normally I only deal with AOSP-capable devices, but you have to admit that the TW version (and features) we have on the Note 10.1 are pretty nice- so I'm using ROMs that are as close to Stock as possible (namely, Darkman's ROMs and lately AR HD 5.0).
Also, most complaints about "bloatware" are completely unfounded and appear to come from users who read not-quite-fully-understood posts on forums like these. I've never used Crayon Whatever-it's-called nor the Music Hub, and the effect of either is negligible. They don't take up much in the way of storage either (esp. on devices with at least 11GB of free space out of the box).
Actually it's the stock rom for Australia... Was using my note to post... Samsung seem to have a bug in JB they released for us poor buggers down here. Only real problem with the stock rom though...:silly::laugh:
Not gonna complain too much though, It took them long enough to release it...

im a little confused about this flash counter. i just rooted and what not and was checking out triangle away. but not sure its purpose? does something happen if the count gets too high? or is it just for warranty purposes... ?

99% of the time its being used it's to keep the All-Share Cast Dongle working, which (due to DRM reasons) won't run if the flash counter is greater than 0. It really doesn't affect anything else, AFAIK.

[Q] CM camera quality and battery life

I have a Galaxy s4 (lte internacional) and i flashed CM last week and have been enjoyin it so far. I have only two concerns about the ROM, first is the battery life, i have found it to be somewhat worse than TW`s, how can i solve it? The camera is the biggest concern I have, i have found it to be worse, what do you guys think? is it really worse? is there a way to solve it?
Are these problems normal in CM?
Sorry for the bad english, im not from US

To be honest the TW camera is the only reason I still use TW based roms, I feel that it's undoubtedly better.

Unfortunately no The TW camera needs the TW framework to operate...it hasn't even been successfully ported to GE roms yet.

Anyway to fix horrible multi window implementation on 7.x

Hope I'm not the only one with this thought but coming from 6.x to 7.x I find that the new mutiwindow support is horrible.
I have turned on the settings in the development options to all of all apps but still it's like night and day vs previous mutiwindow support.
Resizing is a pain as it needs to be super specific and also depending on the apps you use they don't actually run at the same time.
For example of playing a game and then trying to access the browser the game will stop unless it's the active window.
Same for Netflix. I can't browse and use Netflix at the same time without the video stopping.
Seems the new setup unless using Google Apps like YouTube allocates the active resources on the active window.
Previously I think it simply split processes and resources so both apps could work
I would have figured Samsung would have refined if at least not kept their version
Am I the only one hating this?
Is there any way around this for now?
Anyone?
I don't make much use of this, but I think the real issue is that in Marshmallow we had Samsung's implementation of multi-window. In Nougat, Google added multi-window to Android, so I think Samsung dropped their own in favor of what's built into Android. Which simply isn't as good as what the 3rd or 4th generation of Samsung's multi-window offered. I don't think there's anything we can do about it, unfortunately.

Thanks. Unfortunate that they would simply stop with their own implementation since it was so much better and flexible vs the default one
Yes I agree that this new implementation is rubbish compared to the touchwiz one on MM.
Such a shame that we're stuck with it unless we downgrade.

Am I missing quality / features by using custom ROMs?

Hey guys,
I was always the one guy having a custom ROM on all of my smartphones, even if that phone is only one hour old.
But am I right that this way I might miss many features the smartphone has?
I mean, I really love the mass of settings I have in ROMs like Lineage. But for example the S8 has many features which don't work / exist with custom ROMs because they are missing the stock apps. Am I right?
Like for example if you have a smartphone running Lineage, mostly the camera app isn't that good like the original one from the manufacturer.
And same **** for the Galaxy S8: I love having masses of settings so I am using the Camera FV-5 app. But by using it I am not sure if these apps have same good quality like the stock ones, even if I now have my nice amount of settings.
I would really like to have all features of the S8 but with the mass of android settings I have in custom ROMs like Lineage. Is that even possible?
How can I have all of the masses of settings from Lineage or other custom ROMs without losing quality of the smartphone or apps like camera, etc. by using those ROMs?
Because in stock android settings of S8 are less options like in lineage. But I don't want to change to a custom ROM this time because I think I might miss nice features which only work / exist on stock ROM or the quality will be lower (like in camera).
Really hard to explain what I mean but I hope you got it
Maybe somebody can help me.

You also need to make sure you can flash your Carrier's CSC, otherwise you may not have Volte or WiFi calling, assuming your carrier supports those features.
