Samsung Galaxy S4 Rim Chrome Fading - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Samsung Galaxy S4 metal rim around the display is not metal after all.
after using a pouch (not tight a bit loose) for about 10 days now, i notice that the "metal" rim below is fading and found out that is just a white plastic only with chrome plated.
its a bit disappointing that everyone knows that it is a metal frame. i should bought a protective case rather than a pouch.
see image below

What's this? Is sammy trynna mislead the consumers? -_-

Actually, it has been known that the chrome edging is just plastic, most of the reviews from the tech sites mentioned it in their reviews.
None the less, it stinks that the coating came off so quick...

ALREADY!!!! Wthhh How did that happen so quick lol

Got a hard cover on mine which leaves the top and bottom edges bate but no fading as of yet. Going to be buying a gel cover in the next few days which will cover the rim.

Im using a s3 slide pouch. Maybe by taking on and off that scratches the rim. The pouch is a bit loose. Which I don't know why it fades so fast.

Yup. It's probably the rubbing on the leather inside the pouch each time you put it in and take it out. Do you take it out and put it in all the time? (Oooer).
Still shouldn't have happened though. Bad materials from Samsung.

I can live with plastic (polycarbonate) ... but hate fake metal coating
Black plain honest plastic would have been 10 times better

I have the same thing starting my replacement S4. I received it at 7pm May 16th. That is less than 48 hours later. It has been in my pocket for may 15 minutes total. Honestly have used it for maybe 1 hour. the rest of the time it's been sitting on my desk. The first S4 I had I just returned because the chrome plating cracked near the ear piece. Extremely disappointed with this device quality. Not to mention the US version I have, with the quad core qualcomm, has a bunch of lag and stuttering.

dust around the screen

Can the dust that sometimes gets stuck around the edges
Of the glass get inside the nexus s screen just wondering cause I'm using amezer case
and somethimes there's a good amount of dirt and dust that sits in the little edges around the screen just let me know what's good
I've been thinking the same

The dust is all the same type of dust, im wondering what it is, dead skin? I'll put it under a microscope tomorrow but im no scientist.
Sent from my Google.
I use a piece of paper to get it out. It drives me nuts.

That's what I did the other day used the edge of a paper to get it out
The dust won't get under the screen like with HTC devices since samsung fuses the glass to the screen and it comes as one unit.

Having suffered from the infamous dust issue with the Desire that's good to know.
actually...
dust does get under the screen, but not under the monitor part of the glass. i have little specs of dust filling the optical hole of the front facing camera. i'm gonna assume it got in there through the speaker. it really frustrates me and i may go and buy a dust blower to try to dislodge it. i've tried blowing in and all it does it fog up the lens. i dont use and dont plan to use the front facing camera, but it is pretty frustrating that there's dust in there.

small gap on screen

have you guys notice small gap between the glass and the silver plastic rim around it,visible only on bright environment..
i've noticed this on the first day. My friend said he read something about this on other phones to. I'm guessing its because of it being glass. It is design to protect the screen so when you get a bump on side it will not break the gorilla glass. I think

Might be true, maybe its for design purposes, in mine its only noticeable on the top area, but when using the phone normally you will not notice it because of its black color..
It's generally used as a seal to keep dust from entering the phone.

Yeah i just noticed it on mine. Wonder if we should be worried about the screen popping out of the frame or something. The gap is more prominent on the right side of the screen when looking at it. Top and bottom has no gaps. Hmmm...
Mine looks like it has an equal amount of gab and some dust that settled in.
its made like that. like what someone said above, its to protect the edges of the glass from shattering.
The glass on mine is a bit off centre, cant see it unless looking right at it in light.

I had the same glitches. Down and on the left side of the screen. Got the screen replaced by Samsung. The frame and the screen is stuck together from the factory. Now it sits really tight.

So is it a factory defect then? Unit seems to be working flawlessly though and no screen glitches
I noticed a tiny little gap on the bottom most part of my screen and the frame. It's not very visible, but it seems to be collecting a little bit of dust.
I never noticed it before reading this thread.

i just brushed the metal bezel

i just brushed the metal bezel with soft soft sandpaper now it looks like new, it was showing signs of wear so after brushing it, it looks much nicer, I hate all those shiny bezel as they get scratched easily

Yes. It is just coating.
You probably would get more scratches by sandpaper.
i will upload pictures tomorrow, i used a sponge with its side had such a fine fine coating of somthing that feels like sand paper ( i will post its picture too )
what ever the bezel is made of it had now a brushed look, finally from now on i don't care if it gets scratched or not as I can brush it off again any time.
the keys coating after brushing became black which added a nice look to the brushed bezel
I'm not sure, but my old HD7 got scratched on the power and volume buttons and eventually rusted. I think if you take off or cause any weakness in the covering it will oxydize and rust, even if it is metallic paint. I really wouldn't suggest doing this to your device. It may look good now but there's no guarantee it will stay that way.

On the international version I have, the bezel is just a chrome paint. Its a very fine layer and has chipped off in a couple of places with the same black underneath. Wouldn't recommend scratching/sand papering it.

Yup, same here. Wouldn't do it unless you want a black bezel. An ugly one.

hi everyone well I actually after 1 day of brushing the bezel I regretted it, as said above I noticed it started to look ugly thanks god I had received a replacement bezel new from ebay, so immediately i took off and put the new bezel.
I always ask myself why companies put those cheap bezels that are easy to get scratched in the first place, what a shame on them

Curved edge screen?

Honestly the S3 was so annoying with it's curved edges and trying to find a good screen protector with a good fit. I do not like wet application ones so I was stuck with dry apply ones that never covered the entire screen. So to anyone who may know are the edges of the screen curved?
they don't seem to be, from what I've seen. I've taken note of this too, i didn't care for the curved look. the s4 seems to be flat all the way across

Pretty much this.
On several hands on video you can see clearly that there's a metal trimming around the edges.

Yeah I saw that but the S3 also has a trim just not raised like that... And I haven't seen a picture with the perfect angle to say absolutely... Though now that I see Spigen has their Glas.T and Glas.TR posted im thinking that's a good sign
Sent from my GS3
On my sample, there is a very small gap (few mico-meters) between the metal ring (real metal this time) and the glass
Additionally, the glass does not cut, so it seems to have a round edge on a few micro-meter (not milli-meters, definively not like S3). It's all the same with HTC Desire for example, so you should not have any problem with glass protection.
My camera doesn't do good macro mode, so I can't show you properly, and as we have a month to go, mechanics might also change a little. But it's not like S3, you can go with screen protections.
I use to have this problem too. From all the videos and photos i trying to notise,S4 seems to be all the glass flat so we wont have this problem!

[Q] The polished chamfered aluminum started to fade away?!

Hey after 2 days since I bought the Note 4 the polished chamfered aluminum started to fade away the only explanation for this is when the device gets warm and overheating on heavy tasks my hands get sweaty the places when my hands contacts with the aluminum then the aluminum start to do this and from day to day it start to get all of the chamfered part and it's really annoying since I don't like putting cases on my phones I don't know why the iPhone 5s didn't do that (it has the same chamfered look) I thought of getting a metal polish but I don't think it's gonna be good because I'm using the phone every day any thoughts?! (sorry for my English it's not my first language)
Mine is easily scratched too. Dont use any hard case. Just use tpu case.

No I don't talk about the scratches I can live with that, but I'm talking about the shiny chamfered look is fading by the time goes and that caused by the sweat that comes from my hands and when the phone gets hot
I see. Its easy to get the shine back. Just wipe it with a micro fiber cloth like the one included in sunglasses.

Yeah I did that too didn't do any thing I don't have any knowledge what should/shouldn't do with metals I think a metal polish from autosol will make a difference or just alcohol with a micro fiber cloth or just put TPU case just like said. Thanks for the reply, really appreciate it!
Please dont use metal polish. It might ruin the side paint when it gets into it. I suggest just use a slightly damp micro fiber cloth. And i think the beveled edges is chrome. So chrome gets easily smeared by finger prints
