[Q] USB Debugging and Odin - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Kind of a "getting my bearings" question, but I have been flashing custom recoveries, ROMs, etc. for going on a year now, but, you know, I just follow guides and use common sense, so I am definitely still a novice by all means.
Interesting thing just happened. This week I turned off USB debugging and then Developer mode altogether after flashing back to the stock MDC rom so I would get the MDL OTA update. The update came, and tonight, three days later, I installed it and then proceeded to install the OUDHS recovery.
Odin flashed it but just sat there at the end with "RESET" in the status box. I assumed that was because I unchecked the "Auto-Reboot," so I then powered down (just held power button, not battery pull or anything), and launched into recovery (VOL.UP), and voila! I was in the custom recovery.
I then flashed Shabby's custom kernel and SuperSU, rebooted, and now I'm rooted. SuperSU works, Titanium Backup works (which I used to freeze "seandriod" to get rid of the security warning), etc.
TL;DR: I forgot to turn back on Developer Mode and USB debugging before doing all this, yet it all still worked. :cyclops: Why, then, do I read so often that one needs to turn that on to flash things with Odin?

Developer mode is for adb access to the phone. Doesn't have anything to do with Odin or recovery.

Well, assumed adb, but I thought Odin just had the necessary framework compiled in.
Well, okay. Thanks! :good:

[Q] S4 Bootloop, Can enter download but not recovery

Hi,
I have been searching and searching. I tried to install a kernel to my phone, its been forever so i don't remember which one.
It just reboots every 5 seconds without any screens coming up. I can not get into recovery mode
I can get into download mode and have flashed stock I337UCUAMDB_ATTAMDB_I337UCUAMDB with odin, but it doesnt fix anything.
What can I do to get to stock recovery and fix my phone?
What happens if you put it on download mode and then cancel with vol down
It falls back into the bootloop of restarting every 5 seconds with no screens coming up. No entry into recovery.
And if you pull the battery and put it back in does it try to boot?
What firmware were you on and was it loki'd if you were on mdl?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
I have taken the battery out and replaced it. It does not automatically try to boot. After pressing power it goes into the same boot cycle. Also, thank you for your quick attention!

When did it start doing what's it's going. Did you do anything before hand? Do you know what firmware you where on before you tried odin? Was it mdb?
"What firmware were you on and was it loki'd if you were on mdl?"
Previous to my obvious blunder with the kernel download, I was using goldeneye rom from android develepment, sucessfully.
Dont know if that answers the question but i have also tried to flash AMDL with odin but have the same results.

When you used odin did you only have f.reset and auto-reboot checked and flashed the md5 file in PDA

I have done it multiple times, perhaps panicking, I checked the re-partition button. I have tried to get a PIT file downloaded and tried to use that.
However, this behavior was happening before I did that. It started boot looping as soon as i tried to use TWRP to flash the kernel (I know i am an idiot, and didn't read first). As soon as this started happening, that's when I immediately tried to flash AMDL (exactly as you described with only those options checked) through odin and it didn't do anything different. That's when i tried other options. I fear i may have broken my phone. Again thank you for your attention.

I think you've broken it too. Sounds like you flashed the wrong kernel and at that point you were more or less hosed. Look into jtag, mobiletechvideos.com. They can probably fix it. It'll cost you $60.00 +

i've never seen a kernel hard brick a device or corrupt the recovery partition. i also rarely see a user flash a file and not remember what they just flashed. he/she possibly flashed an incompatible kernel or flashed a non-loki'd kernel without flashing loki-doki. either way, recovery would still be accessible to correct this issue. i feel that there is more to this.
OP, see jd's jtag post above.

Well I finally was able to get Kies working and did a firmware update. That gave me back regular recovery. Now Im stuck at bootloop att screen.
I then re flashed AMDL stock via odin and VIOLA!
Im back to stock baby!
And from there ill probably go back to Goldeneyes Rom and never think about this ever again. Thanks for your time. My phone is working again!
Also
Thank you for helping me at least by giving this thread attention. So much appreciation to the fine people here at XDA

[Help] - Lost Root, unable to reroot - I9505

Hi Guys,
i have spent the last week looking around for information and i cant find a fix, wondering if people could help please!
Im a long time user of custom roms, have had customs on the HTC Hero, S3 and now my S4... and i had the CM12.1 nightlies installed, running TWRP and the CF AUto Root.
It ran perfectly for a few weeks or so, even with the OTA updates you get.
I woke up the other morning to the phone misbehaving so i thought i would check and now i dont have Root access at all. Super SU, TWRP and even root checker all confirm no root access.
I have wiped the phone, reinstalled root, then TWRP and then the latest CM12.1 nightly and whilst it boots into the OS, i still dont have root.
Can anyone assist please? no root seems to cause hell!
You have a big misconception about rooting a custom rom.
CF auto-root is ONLY for stock TW rom. It's should NOT be used with CM or ANY other custom rom.
Root is standard in CM, it's only disabled. It can be enabled trough devoloper options.
- To enable Developer options go in Settings->About device and press "Build number" for 7 consecutive times.
- Then go in Developer options and enable root.
After that you can install SuperSu from the playstore (but it's not required). It would recommend it though.

I'ts possible that that is caused by flashing cf auto root.
- Wipe /system (you don't need a full wipe). You can the option somewhere in TWRP.
- Reflash the rom you are on.
- Enable root in developers settings.
- Install supersu from the playstore.
Have you actually tried reinstalling SuperSU? Or force updating the libraries?
I'm having the same issue. But without root, I can't even go into recovery. What should I do to wipe the system and flash the same rom? Please help, thanks.

Root is nothing to do with the recovery. Won't stop you from booting into it if you don't have root
Cannot boot into recovery anymore (in CM 12.1)

Thanks for your help. I'm still quite new to the rooting/flashing ROM thing. The reason I ask that question was I cannot boot into recovery anymore. I tried using the following three ways, 1) holding volume up, center home and power - it still boots back to normal boot; 2) The advanced boot option in CM12.1 used to have the option of booting into recovery, but it's gone now; 3) Using the Cyanogen Update from CM12.1 to run the update within the About Phone section of settings.
Is there another way to boot into recovery? Or, do you think there is something wrong with the CM 12.1? Thanks again.
With the phone switched off, press and hold volume up/power...ignore home button its not needed
Let go when you see blue writing in top left
If that fails, then we can take it from there

I just followed your instruction. I saw the blue writing in top left, then it vibrated once and went back to boot into the regular OS. What should I do next?
Thanks.

hmm... maybe you are holding down the buttons for a little too long...try releasing when you see the samsung logo start appearing
Ok, that worked, thanks. I was back in recovery.
But then when I tried to flash the zip file of the same ROM again, I got an error message saying that the ROM is for certain models: jfltexx, i9505, GT-i9505 etc. and that my device is jfltecan.
My device is a Canadian Rogers Galaxy S4 (SGH-i337M). Initially, I used the CM 12.1 ROM for jfltexx to flash and then the model name in settings became GT-i9505. Also in setting, it's showing the CyanogenMod version as "12.1-20150426-NIGHTLY-jfltexx. So, how can I fix that?

Root & Encryption

Hi there,
I have to say... I feel a LOT more secure with my Edge+ (G928G) rooted than stock.
Using STOCK ROM (AOJ4) with arter97´s 10b2 kernel and Phillz recovery.
On top of that, I am using an OpenVPN to other countries and filtering by adguard through local proxy. AFWall as well, so I think that I´ve managed to get rid of tracking with that.
The only problem right now is the fact that encryption is not working. I already searched a lot about it and it seems to be related to supersu or the recovery but I am not sure.
So the question is: is there a way of getting encryption to work again? I have found this, but haven´t tried (afraid of loosing acess to my data)...
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
If you are talking about the below it is harmless to try. However, since you are already rooted just go to recovery first take a full backup copy it to your PC and fiddle with the phone to your heart's desire
1. According to him latest busybox needs to be installed.
2. After enabling USB Debugging on your phone, you need to go to adb shell on your PC and type su for root access . Accept the root permission request on your phone. You will then see in adb that the $ will turn into # . (That's what took me so long to get it right as a beginner )
3. Type following command: pkill -KILL daemonsu
This will temporarily disable supersu/root. (You see that the # will turn back into $. Also you'll see your apps won't be able to gain root access). After encrypting your phone will be automatically rooted again.
4. alphahere says not to open SuperSu afterwards. Just start with encryption.
This time encryption won't crash (at least it worked for me on BobcatRom and X-Note Rom). Yeahiiiii

No luck: got into a bootloop. In fact, won´t even load the custom recovery, keeps booting in the loop.
Will try to flash a stock ROM through Odin.
Yeah that's your best bet now. For recovery to no longer work this means encryption started yeah?

Exactly, and successfully completed. Rebooted into boot logo, spent some time there, then rebooted into the loop (couldn´t avoid remembering this LOL)
Downloading the stock rom from samobile. Shame it is really slow (3 hours left). Hope flashing with odin will work with a dead battery...
Ok.
For the reference, encryption is a big no-no for the Edge+, at least with the current tools.
I hope that someday a dev will pay attention to this matter and dedicate some time to make it work...
I simply lack the knowledge to make it work or even identify where the problem lies... sorry.
Here is how I got back:
Downloaded G928G stock ROM (currently AOJ4) from Sammobile;
Entered download mode, flashed it with Odin (to flash it just follow the steps to flash a custom recovery with odin, except you will choose the .md5 from the stock ROM);
Rebooted, asked for the encryption password. Proceeded with boot but stuck for a bit in a black screen with the blue LED on. Rebooted by itself, asked again for the encryption password. Let´s say it entered a kind of a soft bootloop;
Flashed Phillz recovery / arter97´s kernel again (basically had to root it again). Erased data, restored backup through Phillz recovery;
Rebooted and *almost* everything was there, except for my files (!!!)
I chose to backup through Phillz default option (backup to /sdcard)... I thought that would backup my files as well but, no?

Very specific bootloop issue

Heads up, this is a bit of reading
Ok so two nights ago, I was messing with the phone a little bit attempting to put Google Assistant on the phone. I had gotten a new cable from Amazon which enabled me to finally plug my 6P into the computer and my bootloader was already unlocked as I did so before but the issue was that I didn't have twrp yet on my phone. After I got it all set up with adb/fastboot etc. I tried to flash twrp. It didn't work, I kept getting stock recovery to come up so I ended up chalking it up for another day. As I was watching my beloved school lose in the Rose Bowl, I realized that the phone was rebooting. Not sure why but it just started doing it. After that, the phone turned on after rebooting for about 45 mins and it stood on for about 10 mins. After that, it went back to bootlooping and did so without getting to the android boot up screen all night.
Pissed, I decided to try to fix it myself but after I woke up, I found the recovery to be inaccessible through the bootloader which I could previously enter even through all of the bootlooping. After the bootlooping started, I couldn't flash a recovery so figuring it was the new cable, I switched to the older one. Well after doing that, I was able to flash the stock recovery and get adb working again. Using a guide, I flashed the newest factory image that was just released which is N4F26J (my phone was on the NMF26F update), and after a few bootloops, the phone turned on!
Ecstatic, I skipped past all the setup screens and went immediately to developer options and I activated usb debugging. Shortly after this, the bootlooping restarted and I wasn't able to get it to get back to the phone. Using the Wugs toolkit, I continued to use that to get the factory images on the Nexus and usually after I would use it to flash the ota, it would reboot a few times and get to the welcome screen where I could use the phone for about 5 mins. before it started bootlooping again. Fearing it was just Google's OTAs, I switched ROMs using twrp and adb to this ROM https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/development/rom-debloated-prerooted-deoxeded-t3372600 (All Credit For The Rom Goes To Him), and after a few reboots, I got it up and running but after a few mins, the bootlooping started again. I noticed that when I use the toolkit to get into the twrp recovery, it constantly says in Red Letters about it not being able to mount storage.
If anyone please can help me figure this out, I would really really appreciate it. I can't send it to Huawei because it has a very slight crack on the screen and with me being a college student, I can't afford the $160 that they want to replace it. Somebody please give me any type of insight so I can try to fix this on my own. Please
btw before every flash, I followed all steps you should with wiping cache, dalvik, etc. Not sure if that would make a difference

Since you are familiar with NRT, I would start by running Advanced Utilities and fastboot FORMAT cache, system and userdata. Then go back to Flash Stock+ Unroot. Make sure you are set on at least NMF26F if Wug hasn't already updated to N4F26J yet. Flash stock. That should get you back up and running. There are other ADB options from the PC if this doesn't work for you.

I think the problem you had with TWRP not sticking on Nougat is that you need to flash SuperSU after or the phone will revert back to stock recovery. Not that it helps with your boot loop issue.

Yeah it sucks simply because I've managed to get it from not booting to recovery to booting to the Rom but it just won't stick. This is hands down the worst experience I've ever had with a phone. The fact that Huawei wont replace it without that $160 is ridiculous to me because I've really done nothing wrong with it, it just konked out leaving me without a phone. Wow
Its probably google trying to force us into a pixel phone. If my 6p eats it, im done with Google phones. I love this phone. Its the best ive ever had. I'd definitely pay 160 for another if they could assure me no more bootloops. It sucks for people that can't afford it.

There well may well be a hardware problem with your device BUT I read your post again and I see a few possibilities. One is that you may have been using an unreliable data cable, and you didn't mention hash checking files before flashing. Second, it sounds like you had installed a factory image, and afterwards applied an OTA to the phone (and then a custom rom). Once you apply the full N4F26J image, there is no need use any OTA! Start with the latest image. Lastly, your data became encrypted when you booted the first time so you are getting mounting errors in TWRP. My advice would be to reformat again as above, manually download the full factory image N4F26J and use NRT to install it. NRT has not updated the toolkit yet, so you will have to d/l manually. NRT should hash check the file you downloaded. Use the bricked mode to Unroot+Flash Stock. You never mentioned running unencrypted, so I assume the default encryption is what you want. The idea is to attempt to get you back to stock with a device free from bootloops. If this doesn't work, then you'll need to use ADB.

Your phone is worth a lot more than 160.00 so it's probably best to RMA even if the charge seems unfair. You could always sell the RMA phone for a lot more than 160.00 if you've had enough of the 6P.

Sorry to hear that. Not ready to throw in the towel?
Have you tried doing a factory reset after the latest bootloop?
Any errors when formatting the 3 partitions, or during the flash process?
It could be looping for some reason during the initial encryption process which happens during first boot. I would try using a "no force-encrypt" modified boot.img before booting the first time to prevent the encryption process. If you prevent encryption, you may prevent the bootloop. You can find the boot.img on this forum, or use Wug's from the previous build, or even flash SU 2.79 to modify your boot.img.
If that doesn't work, you could try extracting files you need from the factory image, fastboot format and flash img files manually, including the modified boot.img.

Samsung J5 was rooted, did factory reset now I'm lost

Hello,
Like the title says, I have a Samsung J5, I rooted it as soon as I got it maybe a year or so ago.
I never had any issues with it. This morning, however I made a (now in hindsight) bad decision by factory resetting, dont even ask me why I thought I needed to factory reset it, I already did it.
Anyways, I did the factory reset from the phone and it instantly rebooted into TWRP, and here's where I got lost. I don't know what to do from here.
I assumed the phone would just reset itself, but it always reboots in recovery mode.
I thought maybe I had to flash a ROM again (I flashed a custom one and then stock back when I first rooted it, but my memory is terrible and I just have faint memories of it), I looked that up and found I needed Odin, the stock rom I wanted to flash and to reboot into download mode. So I got all I required and I don't think Odin is finding my phone.
My phone just has the blue screen saying downloading... and do not turn off target. Nothing else. and Odin doesn't show anything (I think it's supposed to show the device somewhere? Anyways, I'm super lost and I have no idea what to do.
I mostly just need someone to point me in the right direction, maybe some instructions I can follow or something, I'm not super experienced as you can tell but I can follow basic instructions when I'm not being dumb.
TL;DR: Did factory reset on rooted J5, now it only boots into TWRP, no idea where to go from here, stock rom flash?

Like the title says, I have a Samsung J5, I rooted it as soon as I got it maybe a year or so ago.

Try factory reset in TWRP under "wipe" and try rebooting then.
If that doesn't work download a rom from xda for your device onto an sd card. Then put the sd card into the phone, Reboot into twrp and flash the ROM.
The reason odin isn't picking up your device is more than likely USB debugging isn't enabled which you can only do from inside the phones settings. Enable it once you flash the new rom and then flash your old firmware using odin afterwards if you wish.
Do you know what model it is?
Or even what year model it is? 2015?/16?/17?
If you can boot into twrp you have nothing to worry about as it can be easily resolved

Hey
I have already tried doing the factory reset from TWRP, but when I reboot after that it goes back into recovery mode, if I try to reboot from recovery mode into system it just goes back to recovery mode as well.
I'll try downloading another rom, I got the stock one in there but it doesn't flash it from TWRP, which I'm pretty sure is expected behaviour anyways.
The model is SM-J510MN 2016, I'll start looking for a rom.
Thanks

You can't flash the stock rom in TWRP because it is a .zip.tar file and twrp can only flash .zip files or .img files

Yeah, I may or may not have already tried hehe.
You wouldn't happen to have a rom that's not being hosted on Mega would you? I exceeded my limit when I was 95% done downloading one of them.
I think I found one, whoops.

Yep, I tried that, although I'm not sure the USB drivers I downloaded were correct, since the official page isn't working at least for me. So I downloaded what the websites claimed were the correct drivers, I went into download mode that way, which has some debug info on the top left stating it's in Odin mode, but Odin still didn't recognize it.
I'm pretty sure usb debug options were turned on before this, but I'm not sure if the factory reset could've messed with that, thought I'm assuming it could be part of it.
I'm currently trying to download some custom roms to follow garylawwd's advice, I'll reply once I've got results.

So I downloaded one, wiped everything, installed it via twrp, it apparently installed it correctly, rebooted the system and it went straight into recovery mode again. It's not letting me reboot into anything that isn't download or recovery. Any other ideas? Am I doing something wrong?

Uhm, so after doing that I flashed the latest twrp version (I had 3.0.2 or something), rebooted after flashing the image, did a wipe from there, rebooted and it now didn't boot into recovery mode but instead I'm now on a white screen with the samsung logo in the middle looping from light grey to black. I'll look into that I guess...

After it got stuck on the samsung logo I rebooted into recovery mode, flashed the custom rom once again, rebooted and it's still stuck on the samsung logo. Lost once more.

Go into twrp and go to wipe. Click advanced wipe and wipe system, internal, data, dalvik cache.
Then flash the ROM again and reboot

Tried this just now, it rebooted twice and on the second reboot it got stuck on the logo once again.
I think I'm done trying to mess around with it, I'll take it to a repair place :/
Thanks for looking out though, definitely appreciate your tips even if they didn't end up working out. :good:

Why would you try a ROM which has not been updated for months, get a recent one like Lineage OS just to try if it works, its also small in size.

He wants to just enable USB debugging in devoloper options because he wants the stock firmware and his pc isn't recognising his phone because this option isn't enabled.
He has twrp so flashing any rom will do just to get into the phone and enable USB debugging so he can flash the stock firmware through odin

I understand why he is using a custom rom,I mean why did he try one that has not been updated for ages because maybe its the rom causing bootloop

Hey, so yeah, I was just looking for any rom, didn't really look for anything in particular, just got the first one I found in order to just get into the phone.
I ended up just taking it to a repair place after not having much luck myself, I don't know what exactly they did, but I now have that ROM flashed and I have access to the phone, I'm not sure if I want to try flashing either a different custom rom now, stock, or just sticking to this, since I'm sorta scared it will get messed up again and I'll have to go back to that repair place.

Nope, I'm on Extreme ux 8.0, which is what I downloaded to try to get into the phone to turn on the usb debugging option, the guy that repaired it must've noticed it was already on my SD card and flashed it without telling me.
Like I said, I kind of want to go back to stock but I'm sort of scared of touching it and having it get stuck again, I've kinda got used to this rom's little issues by now though I suppose.
