I asked this very question in the development section and I was told there is nothing really good out yet. The environment is too new at the moment.

Apress - Pro Android and Professional Android Application Development by Wrox which is a pretty good one

if you don't know much and are trying to get started "Hello Android" by Ed Burnette helped me get started on making some simple apps and just working with android in general.

Petition For Android Section On XDA(Please Read and Sign)

Hello Everyone,
I would like to applaud DZO, Mssmison, Vilord, fOObar, Zenulator, SrWalter and any other prognators of the Android Port for a couple different HTC devices. Its a growing concern that we are clogging up the sections dedicated for the WinMo versions of these devices with our Android porting threads. Its been a nice place for us to research and discuss the Android ports for our phones but I must confessed that its getting cluttered in there. I was proposing that we have a new section opened up for Android Porting and subsections for each model of phone that WIP has begun and is usable.
With this implemented in the XDA forums, I believe that there will be more spotlight on the accomplishments so far and open the road for speedier developments on the Android Porting field so that we have more options in the future for which OS we run on our smartphones instead of the one shipped by the manufacture.
I believe in Android on being the next dominent platform for mobile OS due to its lightweight nature, open-sourced, multi-device configurations and powerful tools that come from Google and the beloved community of developers here. I see in the next year Android sales topping those of the crappy Blackberry OS, the cool yet non-functional iPhone OS and the oldschool inadated Windows Mobile OS.
All you have to do is reply to this thread just saying you would like to see this happen.

Yes, a MUCH needed thing. The ports are great, but for a month it seems like they have dominated the Vogue section

Has anyone directly contacted the admin(s)? I feel like the popularity of the multiple development threads is proof enough that an Android division of the Vogue section would be worthwhile.

I agree, but I also think that as well as a general section we need a "Vogue Android Development" subforum like the native android devices have.

So, There are 2.3 leaks out there already...

What would it take to get it working on our Epics? I have little experience with android, the epic is my first (previous winmo user) so I'm not familair with the requriements of getting it running. Im holding off on the 2.2 until the OTA, but I'd certainly love to do a gingerbread install vs messing with the current 2.2 that seems to have most peoples interest.

I wasn't aware of any official LEAKS for 2.3, but I do know that people have gotten it to boot up (and not much else) on other phones.

They are not leaks, they are ROMS that were built off the 2.3 SDK that was released

The hope was this was a plant to get the discussion of the development of a 2.3 epic friendly build going. It's not a general question. I don't look in general for such information. It's wholely a development question, and was appropriately placed. It's not a 'working roms and offical builds' section only. I don't view the general section, I have no interest in the general questions. I look only at the OS specific section.

It would be fairly easy to port the SDK version, but it would be extremely unstable and basically useless. Once they release the source, I'll give a whack at compiling it so we can have a nearly fully functioning rom.

Awesome, my 'inexperienced' hope is that due to the Nexus S being similar to the Epic, it should be somewhat easier. I have zero experience in this field as of now, so I have to look at such feedback regarding this. Thanks!

Hi i just wonder why they have 2 forum original android development and android development,can anyone tell me,pls?

I think it's to help make it easier for us to see "original" android development. For instance, CM10 is original, but some devs just make a few tweaks here and there and call it a whole new ROM. I think those ROMS would fall under "Android Development".

Ambiguously named "Original Android Development" Forums

I'm not sure why the decision was made to start dividing up the Android Development Forums into regular and "Original" versions but I personally feel like it's pointless and confusing, especially for people who have been using this site for several years.
At the very least they should be named more appropriately, the word original makes it sound like you're talking about modified stock ROMs etc..., i.e. what was originally on the device.
The entire point of an open source community is that different people can work on different things. I guarantee you that some of the so called "unoriginal" ROMs out there had just as much work and time go into them as anyone else's. So this is basically a just a slap in the face to anyone who is new to this type of development, it certainly would not encourage anyone to continue contributing and learning.
The bottom line is that the only "Original" Android ROMs come from here: http://source.android.com , even Cyanogen MOD is still 90% someone else's code/work. Essentially the whole thing amounts to elitist segregation, aside from Linus Torvald there isn't a person alive today that has any right to thumb their nose at another open source developers efforts simply because they didn't think they were worthy of being recognized.

Actually it has nothing to do with that, there are many modified stock ROMs in the original forums. Unless of course you're referring to those as well in which case EVERYTHING is based on the AOSP. In either case I hope you voted for option two

No one else has a problem with this, including people like myself who's work doesn't go in the original section
Plus this has been covered so many timez the Admins are bored hearing about it

I agree with the OP.
Having two forums for the development of Android for one device makes no sense.
At the very least, a sticky at the top of every "original" forum needs to interpret why the forum is different to the standard development forum.

It seems that every time I've come here in the last few months everything is different. I understand wanting to 'spice it up' or 'make it organized'...but XDA was pretty much unchanged for a very long time, and now all these changes are more frustrating than helpful. In the end, I guess it doesn't make that big of a difference.
Let it be said that the first time I read 'original android development'...I thought of apps that were developed 100% by a dev...and NOT based on 'original android'.

I'm going to lock this up and explain the differences of development and original development.
Plain development: those are ROMs that are based off stock based ROMs or ROMs like cm with some apps or minor tweaks tossed in. Nothing that is brand new or has revolutionary features in. Team venom ViperS sense ROM is normal development if that ROM is based on a stock based sense ROM. Now if they brought that rom to a Samsung devices or non HTC phine, then its original.
Original development: any ROM that is compiled from source and has revolutionary features in it. Examples cyanogenmod, AOKP,PAC man, Paranoid Android, BAKED,Slim Bean etc. Those are all examples of original development. If someone downloads or compiles a source based ROM. Then adds their tweaks apps etc,that would be normal development. Basically original development is cutting edge stuff.
