WatchOn + On Demand - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Seems as if there is no way to access my cable providers on demand listing from the WatchOn app. This is disappointing as the app on the HTC one has this feature. Am I missing something or does Samsung only let us use their on demand service?

WatchOn - Remote
Does anyone know the distance, angle you have to be for it to work effectively? It's a hit or miss for me. I love this feature because I can change the channel at a sports bar when they take too long to change the channel. but it's a hit or miss though (not because it on the wrong signal)

I need to impress a small group with the EVO's capabilities...

I don't want to get into the details of my upcoming presentation, I'm not in sales. We're looking into potential tools in my workplace. I need suggestions for reasons why the Evo is an ideal smart phone. I've already outlined the obvious (Android's apps, large screen, 4G, fast...) and I DO NOT want to compare it with the iPhone.
I'm looking for bells and whistles (because of my target audience), things that other phones can't do--stupid cell phone tricks like, using your laptop remotely with your android device, that sort of thing...
I just need a few suggestions... thanks.
-jac
** I can't root the phone either.
I always get the best reaction out of Layar and Google Sky.
everytime i show phonemypc app to my coworkers they freak. might give that a look worth the 10 bucks
Presentation you say? How about HDMI?
Plug your phone into a massive projector or TV.
Then play a video on youtube about some features and you're good.
Also mobile hotspots/tethering means people can connect to your phone through wifi and use your 3G-4G internet on any device.
It has an err kickstand.
If you really wanted to you could run a desktop operating system on it, though you would need to root..
8MP camera for great still shots in ample lit rooms.
Some cool games in the market.
Of course theres flash!!
Can't think of anything else right now..
if we're talking stock unrooted, i really like the intergration sense did with contacts/facebook/twitter/gmail. i also show off the kickstand (it gets more oooh/aaah reactions than i expected).
tethering and a good cellular signal (lol you'd be surprised how many people ask me that) also comes up.
Show them Proxoid and explain the free tethering if they root.
Get a copy of LogMeIn Beta (it's floating around on here...) and show it.
Qik/Fring video chat
Google Voice
Google Maps + Navigation (If any of the people you're showing to are travelers/sales, show them the turn-by-turn navigation on the BIG screen, for free.)
SwiftKey and Swype
Voice Dial/Search
Gesture Search
Show them all their Google stuff syncs to it (email, contacts, etc.) so if they lose their phone, it breaks, whatever, they still have everything important.
Dropbox (Very useful for sales, doing presentations and whatnot)
Just let them use it for a little while, the EVO sells itself
How about voice-to-text feature.
Show them the screen; all 4.3 inches
if they are iphone users, show them you can install an app from the sd card without rooting your phone, the turn by turn is good to show off, facebook intergration, high quailty youtube vids,
Tell them how it f*cking prints money, builds you an island, and then flies you to it
All kidding aside, the kickstand is a huge one. If you're in a 4G area, big seller there, notification LED for missed calls/texts/emails/etc, front camera, HDMI if you have a good TV there.
Take off the battery cover and show them the MANLAND hiding inside!

Ok, PhoneMyPC is exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. That is an intense app. Thanks, I'd never heard of it. I'll try it tonight.
RemoteDroid - use your phone as a trackball keyboard to control your computer on the same wifi network, useful for powerpoint presentations etc (it's also been recently open sourced)
USB webcam - although in its infancy, allows you to use the evo's camera as a webcam on your pc. Its choppy, but it works if you're in a pinch.
Touchdown - An email client with activesync support for exchange accounts, one of the only mail apps that allowed me to access mail at work
Rockplayer - Plays a variety of multimedia files without the need to recompress, simply drag/drop to sdcard and play
Astrid tasks - An open source todo list manager that you can schedule notifications for, also has a widget for easy viewing of pending tasks.
PureCalendar - Self explanatory
Gmote.
With Gmote, you can use your phone as a remote control for your PC or laptop, including using it as a keyboard if you want. I use it often for PowerPoint presentations.

And one of those wishes can be for an iPhone 4 with the bigger geebees, the whyfies, and the three-gees. And it has apps.
TiKL - push to talk function to other Android phones for free.
Check out my thread:

Cool apps not found in market and some great unknown apps that are in the market. You'll get some cool ideas here as well as download links.
Don't forget to highlight Google Maps & Navigation...as it's hands down the best maps GPS application out there BAR NONE - and it's free.
A few people also mentioned this, but the text-to-speech integration is also insanely cool.
And Swype (or really swapping out any stock keyboard) is a nice touch, as most phones are locked to a single input type.
If your phone is rooted, it also wouldn't hurt to use ShootMe or the other screenshot app I'm drawing a blank on ATM...I believe you can even remotely display the phone interface on a PC, which does wonders for any kind of presentation.
Then there's the cheese - games, live wallpaper.

Apps you would like to see in the market

I would love to see a music equalizer app created...preferably one that would integrate with Zune.
Yes, I totally Agree. I can't believe there is no eq.
Also. I would love to see a Pandora app. It was promised, but no one delivered.
i would also love this, and something that could also increase the max volume of the headphones
I would love to see a true VLC player that can play any video I put on my phone....I hate converting as it lowers quality and I can't always stream when I am not home
MeCanto has to be one of my favorite apps for both the iPhone and Android. Would also be nice to have tapatalk for browsing XDA ;-)
I am looking for a robust alarm clock app. One that will take into account which time zone I would like it set for, and one that will override the phones volume settings to ensure that it is audible.
The current stock alarm is good, but certainly not great.
For example, if I am based out of Chicago, but travel to London, I should be able to have an alarm set for a phone conference based on Chicago time and a wake up alarm based on local London time.
Basically on my alarm time settings there should be an option to account for Home/Local/ or any other arbitrary time zone.
BB's function a little like this except that theirs fo one further and will turn the phone on from being off at the alarm time. I was never sure that was great functionality. when I want the phone off, it should probably be off. The new BB software though will ask you when you turn it off if you want it to come on at the given alarm time. That could be elegant.
Any ideas? Any of you seen a great alarm app?

VLC would be awesome
I know that its coming...
...but if the Kindle reader app doesn't get here soon, I'm going to go crazy.
I would even be happy with the Nook reader app.

lol funny that the hd7 have a eq but i want to change to a focus because the camera features are a lot more on the focus .. we dont have brightness adjustment and other camera features that the focus have....
I WANT TUNEWIKI/ENGADGET/TAPATALK(I KNOW THERE IS A BOARDTALK) not the same tho...
ugh and no multitasking...lol i feel like im on the iphone again
I'd like to see a Meebo or Google Talk app. As well as a Google Voice app that isn't unofficial.
I really wish there was a free turn-by-turn navigation solution, but at least I still have my Fascinate for that.
One that translates speech to text and can send as text message or e-mail. The Insurance industry and National Highway Saftey Council ought to fund that one.
Better looking Compass apps than what's currently available.
Palringo and evernote and keepass
Or the ones I am really missing from my TP2

I second that!!!
Also, I want a Text message encryption app, so only me and my recipient can read it.
I want Google Locator that works cross platform for android, Iphone, WP7 users.
All in one bar-code, QR, MS TaG, Shipping label scanner.
A sound profile app would be nice, I mentioned this in another thread. The basically the ability to set up preset Normal, night, silent, vibrate only, profiles. Which also give the ability to control and set different sound levels for the Ringer, Alarm, Music, System, earpiece, keyboard clicks, etc.
Also I'd love to have the following apps from the iPhone 4 and Droid Incredible
- Cardio Track (Android - great app for tracking your workouts)
- CBS Pro Football App - on iphone and Android, use it to track and control my fantasy football teams.
- USA Today App...
- XDA Tapatalk App!!!! Someone working on this yet?
- Amazon.com app
- Pandora!!!!!!!!!!
- Sport Tac - App for tracking scores of various sports. Like the Andorid one.
- A true flashlight app that uses the LED Flash!
- PhotoShop App
- Task app that synchs with MS Outlook/Exchange OTA using ActiveSync Why did MS leave tasks out up front?
- I'm sure I can come up with more if given the time..
and what is with all the tip calculating apps out there in the market....
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it but an IRC client would be superb. even if its just something basic like irrsi, that would be God-like.
Am I the only one who thinks the Paid portion of the App market is a tiny bit inflated? Apps that SHOULD be free are a dollar (e.g. xkcd). And apps that SHOULD be a dollar are 3$ or more... even "Glow Air Hockey" is $5.49CAD (The much better iphone version is only 2$) and that's only singling out one of them.
Basically whoever releases an app on the market place has the monopoly for the time being which results in 50-100% markups and I'd even go as far as to say 200% in some cases. It's kinda rough... but with that being said, there definitely are some fair prices to be found if you search well enough.
All in all, I'd love to see discounts across the board!
in time, as you said when competition arrives the prices will drop.
glypmpse
I emailed them and they said they are working on it actively.
I hate to break it to you guys but much of what your requesting is not possible (yet) with the current sdk available to developers. For example, we can't access the compass at all currently. With that noted, I am a registered WP7 developer and I'm fishing for ideas on what to make, so suggest away.

Well, Samsung's Smart Remote app (included by default in the S5) has the ability to control Split AC. And if the brand is not found, they let you request for the brand to be added, which, when you do that, they send you an email (almost immediately) asking you for some more details about your device, like brand, model number, and sometimes webpage of the company.
I haven't taken the time to reply to them after that, so I don't know how long it takes for them to add your brand, but at least the service looks promising.
Regards.
well i have tried like 3 times and yes they reply with the mail about asking the details and thats pretty much all they do. nothing is done after that. i think that mail service is kinda automated one that is generating mails to people who request for this and they are automatically forwarded.

You can try an app called "Smart IR Remote" by Color Tiger in the play store. It works great on my Gs5 to control my tv, amp and pvr, and it looks like it might be compatible with your ac unit.
Sent from my SM-G900F using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
ZaZa remote works for everything I have tried so far, the UI is not great but once you get your head around that its really great.
Another vote for Smart Remote by Color Tiger. I use it for two different AC units at home. It's the best remote app available.

Smart IR control with the Edge

Warning this is a long post grab some tea or coffee.
Coming from a Note 2 the IR capabilities on a phone was a new concept for me. I played around with performing some smart control with peel and a few other apps. Nothing really fit like a professional Universal Remote branded custom programmed remote. Much like a very advanced version of Logitech Harmony. I wanted the WAF (Wife Approval Factor) . This means multiple rooms, devices, scenarios with single button clicks with a remote that changes given its room location and control type. Out Note Edge if you didn't know has an amazing wide spectrum infrared transmitter that can work with a mind blowing array of proprietary devices. Like Xbox and MCE machines to name a few. Its simply needs a powerful app to drive it with a deep code library.
So I stumbled on the app in the play store called "Smart IR Remote - Anymote" . Before I go further I'll point out that I'm not affiliated with any developer and have no benefit to point this app out. I'm just a gadget junkie and a fan of great tech but I digress. This app is not on the cheep side. Its around $6 if I recall. What turned me on to it was its continuous and constant development record, the developer is interacting with users regularly and it met my minimum requirents for experiments.
Setup can be as simple as a Logitech on the basic side or complex as the professional grade. It is your choice . What struck me with aww was the adaptability to create custom remotes WITH full macro or "scene" in the pro world and integrate that in to a one button. Take multiple remotes and combine buttons from all of them to one uber remote. Control WiFi devises along with it. Yup multiple pathway control. Holy cow I was so excited I finally found something to rival some of the most expensive remotes I have ever owned for $6 bucks. It is even equipped with thermostat library's along with some home control capacity. So my brain was tingling with logic layouts and control schemes.
After some serious testing in my house im happy to report only one obscure devise did not have a library entry for its IR codes. One email to the Dev and he was on it. I have set up multiple rooms with a minimum of 3 scenes per room via macro and custom remote setup. My setup works like this . the default remote is the "Home remote" that has buttons labeled per room. Select the room you want to control, Master Bedroom for example and the Master bedroom remote pops up. Then just select one of the action options like "Chrome Cast" turns the TV on pauses and switches the input to the proper location. Then a Chromecast remote pops up with volume and other actions like "Watch Movie". This turns on my HTPC that basicly cone out of sleep, flips the input on the TV to whatever its on and brings up the HTPC remote with all the functions for navigation select and volume. Cool part on this particular scene is if you change it to something else you simply add the sleep option in the macro and the HTPC will go to sleep if you want to change to something else.
It can get far more complex but I used this on my wife's phone that has IR and have had successful WAF !
So play have fun with the infrared on your phone. If anyone is interested I'd be happy to post some examples both simple and complex. Hope this helps someone else and be sure to give a thanks if it did . Cheers.

The edge display is not effected. Works just like with any other app. You can add a app icon in to the edge display as a shortcut. Not app specific but handy for any apps you use regularly.
As for question 2 the short answer is no. I had to lookup the Logitech Squeezebox since I don't have one. It looks like they don't have a library entry for it but I'm sending a message to the Dev team and inviting them to this forum.
Great post! I too tend to find the IR capabilitied that Samsung phones have a very cool feature. It amazes me that so many people dont even take advantage of it, but then again there are so many people that dont tske advantage or know how to use 90% of the features on their phones. I sold my friend a nice Sony LED TV a couple weeks ago and after a few hours he called me asking for the remote because the buttons on the side were a pain to deal with and he didnt have a universal remote.. I was blown away by this because not only had i sold him my Galaxy S5 over a month prior to the TV, he had the Galaxy s4 for probably a year befote the 5, and when i told him to just use his phone its better anyway he had no clue what i was talking about... Anyway, sorry to ramble. Lol Thanks again for the info.
thank you
That's what keeps us, the developers, going. Seeing appreciation like yours makes me want to improve the product, makes me ashamed of the occasional bugs you probably encountered, but all things added, leads to a better product.
By the way, @Cab121, make sure to make a backup of your remotes in Settings -> Backup / Restore. You seem to have put a lot of work into yourself, and only I know how many customers relied on (eventually broken) Helium backups when switching roms, cleared the app data accidentally or not knowing what they were doing, losing precious of their work.
As for some of the other questions in the thread:
- using the Edge - No, right now Smart IR Remote doesn't make use of the Edge feature. It's certainly something we want to add, but we have so much stuff on our platter right now that it might take a while to get on this. Have you seen AnyMote Home ?
- Logitech Squeezebox - yes, that's supported over InfraRed, in our Game / Media Manager category
- Logitech Link - sorry, access to that is closed. We've tried, but no luck.
By the way, if anyone has any support questions (missing devices, bugs, stuff like that..) please email [email protected] - that way you have the highest (guaranteed) chances of getting a reply.

Remote Shutter for Wear OS

Hi All,
TL,DR: I'm looking for a remote shutter for any cam on any android phone similar to the one on Mi Bands. No the remote cameras with companion apps that we can find in play store.
I've just got a brand new TicWatch E3. So far the watch is great, everything what I've expected. There's only 1 gap I don't know how to cover.
I had a Xiaomi MiBand 5 before and is has a great feature, a remote shutter you can use with ANY opened cam on you phone, you just open the camera on your phone, tap the shutter on the band and the pic was taken.
I know that Google Camera does that from wear OS but for Pixel Phones only (it does not work on my Redmi Note 8 Pro with Pixel Experience rom and gcam mod) but I couldn't find anything similar to do it with any phone and camera as the MiBand does. Al I have found are remote cams apps that use their own companion cam app in the phone, but for those, the picture quality is no good at all.
Does anyone has an idea or recommendation to achieve this from wear os?
im looking for the same the only thing i could find that can do it was https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kemasdimas.wristcamera&hl=en&gl=US which isnt really what i want as it shows the camera screen on the phone.
If anyone else has any other suggestions please let me know.
I have done it using the following apps:
Tasker (to run the 'Take Photo' action
Bubble Cloud to trigger the above
There is a world of usefulness to be had using those two Apps and Android phone / Wear OS
Try Camera One. Though you have to install the companion app, it only uses it for communication with the watch. You dont even have to have it open. Once you launch the watch app, it automatically uses the camera, even if the phone is off. To get full features though, i think its about $4.

Install Tasker
Create Task that uses 'Take Photo' (you can find by typing in search box when creating the task) you can choose from Front / Back camera in the settings of this 'Take Photo' Action
Install Bubble Cloud from link above
Ensure installed on both watch & phone
Use the 'Wear Cloud Editor' section to create a watch screen
To launch the Task you created above, click the '+' button in 'Wear Cloud Editor' and select option to 'Add Tasker bubble (icon looks like a cog) and choose the 'Take Photo' (or whatever you named it) task, you can also choose icon / colour / transparency here
Add the screen created above to a watch tile (think it's called 'Favourites Cloud' or similar from memory?
Swipe to tile and press on the icon you chose to launch the task.
Hope make sense?
Looking for something similar, except that I need to trigger my GoPro Hero 8 shutter from my Galaxy Watch 4, ideally directly (i.e. not via phone), and ideally using BTLE not WiFi. Any suggestions?
(There's this, but that's out of my price range for a mere shutter control app.)
