Hi all!
I'm in my final year and we're supposed to do a project which is worth 200 marks overall. Most of us in our field have chosen to develop either android or iphone applications. My group and I have chosen adnroid.
Now, I'm in need of simple ideas for the apps. We have absolutely no idea on how to go about with the process. I've seen lots of people here develop stunning applications here! We're in need of ideas for developing simple apps.. which can be completed in a max of 2-3 months (considering the fact that we don't have any background knowledge on android development/programming. All we know is Java)
I'd initially suggested an automatic mobile credit recharge system, where in the app monitors you prepaid account balance from time to time and recharges the account once the credit falls below a user set value.
Although this seemed interesting at first, it can only be simulated with 2 databases (one for the mobile credit and another for the bank account)
After going through the type of apps here, I really want to develop something much better than this.
I'm open to all ideas, in fact, we don't mind developing an app that is already existing (for instance a profile manager or a data wallet etc) All we want is to have a fully complete app at the end of 2 months.
Please assist.
Thanks!
Secret Santa?
That's something that I thought up over winter break and whipped it up over a few days in the App Inventor. If you guys take your time, you can probably learn Android programming and design/code it in a month or so.
There are some "special" features that I added to make the app more useful but I'll leave that for you to think up.
I'll post back if I come up with anything else. I also need some app ideas, but just for recreational programming.
Thanks! I'm currently checking out appInventer.. I somehow find it hard to come up with ideas which is why I'm trying to find help from here :|
I think the credit recharger is a pretty cool idea, personally. But I understand that you might want something with more "impact"
I think part of the key to this would be figuring out what has not already been done to death. There are so many apps with 5, 6, 7, etc versions of the basically the same thing. I would try to find something to develop with less competition, even if it's more of a niche product. I'm trying to think of the things I've previously thought "I wish I had an app for ____" but I'm drawing a blank right now.
If I think of anything I'll be sure to post it back in here

Thanks! I checked out google appInventer tutorials.. theres one which says "no text while driving" -- basically sends back an sms to the sender that ur driving.. It seems interesting so I'm gonna see how best i can use it and pack some more useful stuff along with it.. and see how it all works out.
The reason why I'm giving the auto recharge a back seat is because it can't be implemented in real time.. it can only be simulated in a virtual environment.
You might want to think about doing something that takes advantage of the maps api. It's easy to do but it looks impressive and might help you get high marks.
A great idea?!
Graphics artist here,
Something I just thought of and just started searching for (literally) when I came across your thread, would be: Using the phone as a touch sensitive.. control for editing software, ie photoshop or paint.net. Basically turn the phone into a touchpad control for a computer.
Just an idea!

This would be great! I'd definitely pay a couple/few dollars for something along these lines if it was user-friendly
Thats a really awesome idea!! Converting the touchscreen into a tablet input for PS or any other photo manipulation software.. But the problem is that I don't know where to begin! :|
This is a college project so the idea isn't to make a unique and sell-able application... it's to demonstrate that you can work as part of a team to make an application from design to completion.
I'd try and think of a fun app (i wouldnt care if it's been done 100 times before) that everyone on your team wants to contribute to. If it's unique, brilliant, if not nevermind you've got some good experience working as a team and making an android app.
I do like the sound of the phone touchpad app, it's been done on iPhone by Logitech but i've not seen something for android. If it helps, http://blog.logitech.com/2010/01/29...-touch-into-a-wireless-trackpad-and-keyboard/ .
There are a ton of them on the market: Gmote, MyRemote, UnifiedRemote, etc.
It might be a good idea to email this developers to get a better picture of what to do.
Problem is that all of those tools rely heavily on WiFi so you'll have to understand networking.

Bingo!! Which is exactly what my instructor said. I tried out the tutorials on appInventer.. I was toying with the idea of integrating more features into those itself. Is that a good idea? Although the concept is from Google, would it be ok to build on it? i'm particularly interested in "No texting while driving" and "Broadcast Hub" -- both these apps are awesome! Are there any notable features that I can add to make them better.
How about an app for the quick oil change places. It could show your last service and what was done. Show any upcoming maintenance and when your next oil change is due.
Maybe integrate Google Maps to show locations of service centers. Maybe offer a "e-coupon" if they use the app. Pretend they offer online scheduling and maybe show them "2 customers in bay, one waiting" - Estimated wait time 20 minutes" yada, yada
As an "older" programmer with 2 degrees, it's nice to see your college offering the mobile platform as a programming choice. Hell, all we got to write were COBOL and CICS mainframe applications and some semi-cool C++ projects.
Good Luck and Congratulations on getting your degree!!
What about a bluetooth hack to where u would be able to hack into someones phone and use their service for texting and calling. I heard of something like that when i was on my blackberry and was really into it. But it would be nice to get something like that on my Incredible

I think it would be a good idea to make an app that uses an existing web api for a popular website, could be facebook, ebay(do they have an api?) etc etc.
It's a good way to learn a lot of aspects of android development, with a useful product as the outcome.
It doesn't matter if there is already an app for that site, think of a different way of using the site on the mobile, and go from there.
I would like to see a program that reads the weather API and reflects the current weather and location on the wallpaper. This app would require graphics design, code to parse the weather feed, writing to the OS. When I was on Windows Mobile there was a skin for Weather Panel that did this but with Android's live walpaper it could be really cool.
Thanks for the ideas you guys! I really appreciate it. Everything seems interesting.. but the problem is we don't know where to begin or how to go about it.
I did the broadcast hub tutorial present in the app inventer page. It turned out good. Is there any way I can add functionality to this itself?

Do all the tutorials and learn the blocks, you can create lots of stuff. There is a app in the market that adds more features to the app inventor, app inventor extender
XDA App
A couple of suggestions:
- A chess PGN editor
- A simple picture/document management app where you take a photo using the camera, add some tags or other info, and save all details in a database. You can also provide search functionality and a viewer to retrieve pictures using the index you've built.

I did some homework on topics and came across this.. A multilingual speech translator.
Talk in a language, it converts the speech to text, translates that text to a target language, and reads the translated text aloud.
Is this feasible? What is the difficulty level?
Also, is it possible to develop a call blocker app? I looked around but wherever I search, I only find fully built apps but not pointers on how to go about creating one by yourself.
Please assist.
I've looked at many threads and apps that say they'll protect my Android device when stolen. However they all presume that it's a phone that I'm protecting and need the ability to send text messages to it to activate it.
Since the Galaxy Tab wifi doesn't have text messaging that makes all of the security apps that seen useless on the Tab.
But, yet apps do exist. Many laptops have apps that can be activated when a laptop is stolen. The famous "This guy has my Mac" was a Macbook protected by an app called "Hidden". It took pictures of the guy that stole the app along with sending links to a map to locate the Macbook.
That's the kind of app that would be useful on the Galaxy Tab wifi. One that can be activated without the need for text messaging and one that takes pictures with the front facing camera to send along with the email.
Does any such app exist for the Android devices? Does anyone know of one that's in beta? I'd be willing to test it.
I recently bought Seekdroid for my phone but I think it'll work on your tablet too, as far as I'm aware it doesn't use sms but a web interface. It can locate, lock and even remoter factory reset your device, it'll also wipe your SD card if you want.
Take a look and see if it'll do what you want. http://seekdroid.com/
That looks perfect. I'll give it a shot.
I use seekdroid as well but was wondering if the app would still track the phone if the person who stole it ubinstalled the app or factory reset the phone?

Locked N Found
Best Buy Mobile has an app that will work with an Android Tab or iPad (provided, of course it's connected to an access point or is 3G). It will completely lock down the device and allow you and Geek squad to find it in the event it is not returned. It's not free but, reasonable. If you bought your tablet from Best Buy and got Black Tie Protection on it, it's also included for the length of your service plan.
I have a stock Desire HD on Orange UK, and I am still awaiting the 2.3.5/3.0 update. However, a colleague has received the same update for his Desire S.
Something that he has already noticed since the update is that the Car Panel has disappeared.
After a lengthy, but not particularly helpful, web chat with HTC Support, it would appear that they have not removed the Car Panel, but have instead integrated it into their Premium Navigation. In other words, if you still want/need to use the car panel after the update then you have to pay for premium navigation.
I personally don't know how they can get away with this. They have removed the completely free standard Android Car Home, have basically created a skinned version that points to their own default apps, and are now making us pay in order to use it.
Further still, because of the presence of the HTC Car Panel app, we cannot install the standard Google Car Home from the Android Market.
A couple of quotes from my web chat (a full transcript of which I have saved):
Georgina: I am sorry you feel this way. If you wish to use the car panel then you have the option to purchase the licence.

Georgina: I can pass this information on for you. This was a decision made by HTC themselves. They do not take changing things lightly. They look into them thoroughly and consider them first.
Georgina: They only make changes when they believe they are for the best.
Simon: for the best? best for who? those who want to drive safely? or best for the bottom line?

So, basically "yes you can still use it if you pay for it".
I know I am not alone in thinking that the car panel is not simply about navigation. It is essential for the safe handling of calls within the car.
I don't think I was successful in getting this issue logged properly for escalation, so I doubt very much that anyone else at HTC will even see my concerns, let alone address them.
Am I just being too picky? Or does anybody else think that this is totally unacceptable?
I must confess I hadn't noticed, having always found Google's own Navigation app much better.
I do think that Sense 3 is a huge improvement over 2.5 though.
Hello,
I need a parental control app like '1Mole' from 'bosspy'. This specific app got all features I am looking for except one thing: it sends and stores all information from the smartphone on their website at bosspy.
Now, is it possible somehow to use such a service, but sending the gathered information of the smartphone to my own server?
How can I solve this?
This is my first post. Hope I'm not wrong here.
Thanks.
I don't know your app, but I think it'd be more easy and quicker if you tell the original developer your idea. I think they could implement it fast.
Warning this is a long post grab some tea or coffee.
Coming from a Note 2 the IR capabilities on a phone was a new concept for me. I played around with performing some smart control with peel and a few other apps. Nothing really fit like a professional Universal Remote branded custom programmed remote. Much like a very advanced version of Logitech Harmony. I wanted the WAF (Wife Approval Factor) . This means multiple rooms, devices, scenarios with single button clicks with a remote that changes given its room location and control type. Out Note Edge if you didn't know has an amazing wide spectrum infrared transmitter that can work with a mind blowing array of proprietary devices. Like Xbox and MCE machines to name a few. Its simply needs a powerful app to drive it with a deep code library.
So I stumbled on the app in the play store called "Smart IR Remote - Anymote" . Before I go further I'll point out that I'm not affiliated with any developer and have no benefit to point this app out. I'm just a gadget junkie and a fan of great tech but I digress. This app is not on the cheep side. Its around $6 if I recall. What turned me on to it was its continuous and constant development record, the developer is interacting with users regularly and it met my minimum requirents for experiments.
Setup can be as simple as a Logitech on the basic side or complex as the professional grade. It is your choice . What struck me with aww was the adaptability to create custom remotes WITH full macro or "scene" in the pro world and integrate that in to a one button. Take multiple remotes and combine buttons from all of them to one uber remote. Control WiFi devises along with it. Yup multiple pathway control. Holy cow I was so excited I finally found something to rival some of the most expensive remotes I have ever owned for $6 bucks. It is even equipped with thermostat library's along with some home control capacity. So my brain was tingling with logic layouts and control schemes.
After some serious testing in my house im happy to report only one obscure devise did not have a library entry for its IR codes. One email to the Dev and he was on it. I have set up multiple rooms with a minimum of 3 scenes per room via macro and custom remote setup. My setup works like this . the default remote is the "Home remote" that has buttons labeled per room. Select the room you want to control, Master Bedroom for example and the Master bedroom remote pops up. Then just select one of the action options like "Chrome Cast" turns the TV on pauses and switches the input to the proper location. Then a Chromecast remote pops up with volume and other actions like "Watch Movie". This turns on my HTPC that basicly cone out of sleep, flips the input on the TV to whatever its on and brings up the HTPC remote with all the functions for navigation select and volume. Cool part on this particular scene is if you change it to something else you simply add the sleep option in the macro and the HTPC will go to sleep if you want to change to something else.
It can get far more complex but I used this on my wife's phone that has IR and have had successful WAF !
So play have fun with the infrared on your phone. If anyone is interested I'd be happy to post some examples both simple and complex. Hope this helps someone else and be sure to give a thanks if it did . Cheers.

The edge display is not effected. Works just like with any other app. You can add a app icon in to the edge display as a shortcut. Not app specific but handy for any apps you use regularly.
As for question 2 the short answer is no. I had to lookup the Logitech Squeezebox since I don't have one. It looks like they don't have a library entry for it but I'm sending a message to the Dev team and inviting them to this forum.
Great post! I too tend to find the IR capabilitied that Samsung phones have a very cool feature. It amazes me that so many people dont even take advantage of it, but then again there are so many people that dont tske advantage or know how to use 90% of the features on their phones. I sold my friend a nice Sony LED TV a couple weeks ago and after a few hours he called me asking for the remote because the buttons on the side were a pain to deal with and he didnt have a universal remote.. I was blown away by this because not only had i sold him my Galaxy S5 over a month prior to the TV, he had the Galaxy s4 for probably a year befote the 5, and when i told him to just use his phone its better anyway he had no clue what i was talking about... Anyway, sorry to ramble. Lol Thanks again for the info.
thank you
That's what keeps us, the developers, going. Seeing appreciation like yours makes me want to improve the product, makes me ashamed of the occasional bugs you probably encountered, but all things added, leads to a better product.
By the way, @Cab121, make sure to make a backup of your remotes in Settings -> Backup / Restore. You seem to have put a lot of work into yourself, and only I know how many customers relied on (eventually broken) Helium backups when switching roms, cleared the app data accidentally or not knowing what they were doing, losing precious of their work.
As for some of the other questions in the thread:
- using the Edge - No, right now Smart IR Remote doesn't make use of the Edge feature. It's certainly something we want to add, but we have so much stuff on our platter right now that it might take a while to get on this. Have you seen AnyMote Home ?
- Logitech Squeezebox - yes, that's supported over InfraRed, in our Game / Media Manager category
- Logitech Link - sorry, access to that is closed. We've tried, but no luck.
By the way, if anyone has any support questions (missing devices, bugs, stuff like that..) please email [email protected] - that way you have the highest (guaranteed) chances of getting a reply.
