I tried rooting using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257101
Superuser was installed, however root checker says that it's not rooted and superuser throws an error.
Apparently there was a problem with an update from Sprint, and there's ways to go back to stock using "odin", but I'm unfamiliar with this.
I'd like to go back to stock and root or root the phone as it is because without being rooted the phone is unusable for me at work. I have to use a program called "Roam Control" that needs root access as there is no Sprint service in my office.
Any suggestions?

Sounds like you updated to MDL. Try this
I unchecked the Force Reboot and had the battery door off so I could pull the battery after I was done flashing the recovery through Odin.

Okay, I will try this now.
What does "MDL" mean? The link you provided says how to flash stock MDL, but if MDL is what I updated to and what caused the problem...I'm confused lol.

Don't worry about flashing stock MDL if your baseband version ends in MDL. Skip to the recovery and root instructions.
Edited:
I have flashed back to stock using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2259513
and allowed the OTA updated to be applied.
Now I am going to try the methods in the post you provided.
Wow that was a lot of trouble, but I must say you pointed me in the right direction and everything went pretty smooth.
Thank you very much for showing me that thread, I had looked through so many of them in the development section but "MDL" was throwing me off.
I now have root access, and even though it's after 2:30am, I will be able to use the phone at work in about 4 hours.
My pleasure! Glad you got it.

Would ForceRom work after I go thru this steps? I'm currently rooted, with MDC Kernel but I disable the update by long pressing and un-checking show notifications. Any assistance gladly appreciated.

MDC/MDL are just version codes. MDC is what came on the phone at the time of release (stock), and MDL is the new one sent OTA. If you mean what changes did they make, then never mind ( ) because I don't know what changes they made in the kernel other than restricting root access.

Yeah, moto won't work with MDL. He can still root, though. It's easy. Plenty of threads on it in the Dev section.
I just "worry" about the having to freeze seandroid. The consensus is that it doesn't seem to hurt anything, but no one seems to know for sure. (You have to freeze that system app to get rid of the security alert after installing Shabby's custom kernel.)
I ended up using ODIN to flash MDC then root with moto...worked like a charm.

I have done some reading and finally decided I will be using the Casual method to root my S 4, but I am stock with not wanting to end up with the custom lock pad permanently, and I have seen many people have not been able to get rid of it.
So here is my question... After using Casual, what would be the way to get back to stock? This method installs custom recovery, so I am not sure how to go back if indeed to....
Can some one point me in the right direction?
Appreciated!
Before we move forward here, have you updated? As it stands the update released yesterday effectively blocks root and more then likely also blocks Loki. O and it blocks Odin so you can't downgrade. This is like first and foremost if you even wanna run casual now.

If you're still on MDL I recommend rooting now before your phone tries to force MF3 on you as it blocks root and possibly loki.

OP, Root and block the OTA APKs immediately! If your phone starts downloading just rip the battery out lol

You need to read the existing threads. Go to the 'General" section read the stickies and then read the threads about the new OTA. ALL of your questions are answered in detail in those threads. Good luck.
Hopefully this works for me
I Bought my S4 yesterday and the sales rep at AT&T pressed the update button before handing it to me. I didn't think anything of it because as far as I knew android was designed to be open and easily rooted. Man was I mad when I got home. So today I went back and complained that the "phone was glitchy" and was handed another one. This time I told them not to touch it. Hand over the box and nobody gets hurt (keep in mind I paid full price for it too so i was extra mad). This one is on MDL. Now to root and block update. Hooray!
I hope someone can help me. I have searched and searched but I can not find this anywhere. My gf just got a s4 from at&t I was excited because she was going to let me root it and customize it. In the excitement I did not do my research because I thought it would just be as easy as the s3 boy was I wrong.I did the root method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387577 and everything was working well was able to install root applications. So this is where I messed up. I didn't do my research and now I am regretting it because I now have no recovery. I downloaded goo manager installed the recovery tried to boot into it but now it just goes into download mode. I have only found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40976805 to get stock recovery back but it involves odin but odin is write protected so I can't odin the recovery back (please correct me if I am wrong). Is there anyway to get stock recovery back so I can restore it to factory for her until there is a way to unlock the boot loader. Thanks in advance

Idk, it depends what's included in the ota. It could just be system and data or it might also include recovery. Let's hope the devs figure out an exploit for mf3 so you can get a recovery back on. But for now there's no way.

Its for recovering from a kies issue, not for someone who tried to put a custom recovery on. I don't believe it does anything with the recovery, just gets you past download mode.

No current method so don't upgrade if root is essential. Only unlocked bootloaders can get root back.

First off, in regards to TWRP, there is a newer version of CWM recovery that works with KK. Use that.
Second, the developer options have been hidden, but you have to pay me to get the info.
JUST KIDDING!
Here is what you do:
Go to settings.
Click on "About Phone"
Scroll down and then start mashing on "Build Number". It will inform you that you have so many presses before going to developer mode.
After that, it will give you a toast saying developer mode has been activated. You're done!
If someone could kindly put together a walk thru on
How to go from stock, rooted, and unlocked to kit Kat w/root
That would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I am in the same boat, rooted on stock ROM. I don't want to lose root, but my phone keep popping up the update installer request. My phone has kept me so happy for so long that I have not kept up with the forums. I just haven't had any problems, and I'd like to keep it that way. So, is there no root for 4.2.2 yet? Or there just isn't a way to preserve it across the OTA? Should I go back to stock unrooted, update and re-root? I've been reading around the forums and I am just not seeing a whole lot of info about this yet.

this has been discussed many times.
if you have a LOCKED phone, there is NO way to have or preserve root going to KK
if you have a UNLOCKED phone, update to KK, flash the KK cwm, flash su zip in cwm, profit!
those are the only 2 options PERIOD.

you should unlock the bootloader first if you havent already. after you update you will no longer be able to ever.
as for the update, if you flash it with rsd there shouldnt be any issue that im aware of. if you unfreeze the updater and take the actual ota(s), it will not skip any, it will pull the next in line each time until you get to the most current.
however, you will still need to use rsd before taking or sideloading the KK ota or root will cause it to fail.

Once you update your phone, the bootloader can't be unlocked....as far as we know, ever again. If you don't care, which it sounds like you don't, go ahead and update your phone.

most people who dont unlock the bootloader when they had the chance regret not doing it. its not a problem if you dont want to, i was just giving you a heads up more or less.
as for the updates,(this has nothing to do with the bootloader) im pretty sure the first 2 will install fine but im positive the 3rd, KK, will fail because you had root before.
so if you want to go to KK, you really have no other option but to use rsd first to return your phone to stock.

Thanks bweN diorD and gadsden,
I appreciate the help. I only use my root access for killing music apps and I have some bloatware frozen. So personally I think I'll go ahead and update to KK since the benefits should outweigh the loss of root access for me. Should I do a factory reset first or should I be good to go taking the OTA?
Thanks again I'm always hesitant to do things to my phone because I don't have the knowledge to fix it or the money to replace it.

Again thanks, I guess I'll have to look into finding out how to use rsd and go back to stock.
i have returned my phone to stock using house of moto, it is rooted, and xposed. any ideas why it failed after d/l and reboot?
do i remove root and xposed and modules? also lucky patcher.
OTA's are SUPER sensitive. You have to be running the phone at STOCK so it doesn't fail, literally everything has to be how it was when you got your phone. Thats why a lot of people are RSD'ing back to stock and then installing KK. That way you know it wont fail.
In your case, yes: remove root with OTA keeper (which sometimes doesnt work) and get rid of Xposed.
You will have to be running a completely stock ROM. To get mine to OTA, I used the 90.30.1 update from droid-developers(dot)org and House of Moto to flash. OTA went smoothly after that.

SafeRoot modifies the kernel slightly and even a full unroot will not resolve the kernel change. You must flash to 90.30.1 via House of Moto. You can do that on a locked BL, I did it yesterday to mine. You can flash to the same ROM or NEWER on a locked BL, but you cannot flash to an OLDER ROM.
I used SafeRoot on my phone, and was in the same scenario as you.

I can't seem to locate a thread/post on doing this. Could you point me in the right direction?
EDIT: I eventually found this. If anyone would like the prepared House of Moto folder (and assuming it doesn't violate any licenses; I'd better check), I'll zip it up and paste a Dropbox link.
I flashed back to stock using RSD Lite and still can't update... This is weird.

Droidrzr(dot)com has a tutorial on House of Moto. And sbf(dot)droid-developers(dot)org supplies the firmwares to use with that. I can't post links because I'm too new. MODS: sorry if I'm linking to a "competitor" website, but I couldn't find the information here!

That is weird. Did you use 90.30.1 from the link above? I did it through fastboot and did a complete wipe (absolutely all data lost).

I think I edited my post as you were writing that, so take another look.
House of Moto worked well by all appearances. I used KEEP-DATA, incidentally.
The update is flashing as I type this, so fingers are crossed!

I did read one account that someone could still not OTA with KEEP-DATA. Try universal, if you don't want to lose all of your data*. I did FULL mode when I did it, and it wiped everything but my SD card, and OTA worked flawless.
* I'm really not sure what universal keeps. Backup your stuff!
I was under the impression that if you were under the latest JB ota you couldn't return to stock. I'm actually TRYING to get back to stock.
Have I been misinformed?

I believe that you are able to flash back to the version you are currently on. So, if you were on 90.30.1 rooted/modified, you could RSD/FB back to 90.30.1 stock. You, however, cannot flash back to a version older than 90.30.1.

and now it says update check cannot be performed at this time
Where would i be able to download the 98.18.94 firmware for the razr m so i can RSD back to it? I uninstalled a lot of the verizon bloatware so the update fails. I've looked everywhere and i can't seem to find it. Suggestions?
