camera crash when opening it - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It happened quite frequently that the stock camera app crashes to reboot when I started it. The photos set to save in both internal and external, both crash too.
Anyone else has same thing happening?
I9500 Malaysia stock Rom latest unroot. 16GB sd card.

I don't use i9500 but I read some users in Vietnam that use i9500 also have the same problem.

I have also had this issue.. what i have observed is that the problem only began occurring when I inserted my 32gb micro sd card and had the camera app set to store on the said sd card instead of the internal memory. The problem would be that sometimes, upon opening the camera app, you would see a black screen for a few seconds and then the phone would reboot. I have also noted that the camera app takes a little while to start when it does work.
I have subsequently set the camera app to store on the internal memory and i have not had the problem since and the camera app opens noticeably faster. I believe this is a software issue. This is purely speculation on my part but i think it has to do with the speed of the memory card. If it is not of the highest class, it takes too long for the camera app to read and the app hangs and the phone reboots. It also think this is the reason why the camera takes so long to start when it does work.
Hope this helps
I have the same problem, with the camera app, I use an 32 GB Class 10 by SanDisk. Takes time to open Camera app.
I think it is a problem with the SD card, and have asked for replacement.
Also at times when using the camera, with the flash set to Auto, I get an message saying 'Device temperature too high, cannot use flash'. - This may be related or a completely separate issue..
I have also noticed the random restart, with other apps too. Is everyone getting this with only with the camera app?? Or are other apps also causing the problem.
I also have this problem tried latest mdk firmware and still hapens

After changing the location of the files the problem persists. I even removed the Class 10 32gb sd card and it still reboots then accesing the camera.
Hope is a sofrware bug they can fix soon. Cant believe I traded a Htc One for this alpha phone.
Thanks guys

Hello, my phone reboots when I try to make a photo

Everything still stock?
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk 2
same here, sometimes when I open the camera app my S4 freezes for few seconds and then reboots, not mentioning the overheating problem.
Samsung should release an update or something, it better be a S/W issue otherwise I will kill someone.
Do you have problems running Antutu benchmark?
I have the same symptoms as you describe and the one thing that makes my phone restart every time is running the Antutu CPU benchmark.
Everything is stock and yes the phone likes to reboots when I start the camera app. Not every time but like once out of 2 times

Hi MoHeadGeek,
Do you have any update on that?
Any updates on the reboot issue when using the camera? It is really annoying
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda app-developers app
Same here. I don't know if I should change my phone or it's just a software bug that they will solve soon...
For me, it also freezes+rebooted while in the gallery or even launching some app.
If everything is stock, unmodded, and you installed all available updates from Samsung I would go get a replacement.
If your phone restarts when you start the Camera it is a software issue
It happens due to low RAM [the irony that it is in S4 -_-]
They should fix it soon but if you need to immediately then go to development options, scroll all the way down and keep Max tasks to 4.
Read it somewhere it works
But I think you have to set again after maual reboot

I installed the german update and it fixed the problem.
The developers options didn't work for me when I was with the stock rom.

Gallery lag

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this, every time I go open gallery I wait a good 5-8 secs for it to open. It's driving me bonkers

Try using a better micro sd card? I'm using class 10 on my I9505 and loads perfectly fine.
I'm pretty sure mine is a good one I'll check.it's that ad card that's red and grey

I have the same issue and have tried a class 10 sandisk and class 4 samsung memory card.
OP, this is the answer I posted in the other thread you asked the question in...

Here's what happens to me with Gallery lag on my N2 and Note 10.1. When I'm connected to my home Wi-Fi network I get equal Gallery lag on both devices occasionally but it's never consistent. I just tried it on my N2 connected to my home network and today it's fine. If I'm on a non-home Wi-Fi network I don't get any lag and it also doesn't happen on HSPA. My theory is that because my home network has a ton of media across multiple PCs and a server the lag is the Gallery trying to pull all the content in and index it. The Gallery may also identify the most connected network as "home" and treat it differently from an indexing perspective. There could also be an update timer that periodically re-indexes all the content on the network which would explain why it's not consistent. Just my guess; YMMV.

Does it happen to you all the time or occasionally? It has something to do with indexing and the Gallery because it's not unique to the SGS4 and reported on all the Samsung forums. I've never had it happen off my home network but that doesn't mean it couldn't.
No not all the time, it's like every third time I open it then it is slow to open, just real frustrating.

It might be better if everyone used a separate gallery app such as quick pic, its very good and fast!
Wow and lol totally forgot all about quick pic, thank you that will keep me happy till Samsung gets there crap together.

I wish I could help you with that, but I was forced to downgrade mine to 4.2.2, wich gave me knox warranty 0x1, also I saw a norwegian online IT magazine claiming samsung has pulled the 4.3 update in USA and UK at least.
They used BBC as source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24995544

I've just checked them links out, it's crazy really as most my apps are on my sd card so unusable most the time and if I move them to the phone I have no space left so I can't win. Not a lot we can do really

Backup your files. Then boot into the recovery and wipe cache. If problems persist, then wipe system/data.
Files as in images music etc? Will my apps stay on there?

Everything will be wiped.
But your apps should be downloaded automatically when you setup your phone again.

Agreed.. My old S2 started doing that.. It was the eMMC chip. You need to give more info about the phone itself, such as:..
How was the phone flashed?. If you used ODIN, was "USB Debugging" in "Developer Options" (active) Checked, also was "Re-Partition " in ODIN UN-checked, also did you use any 3rd party kernels or bootloaders or Radios,
Do you use a Case and screen protector, if not.. Have you dropped the phone, has it been cushed in your pocket.. or has it gotten Wet or condensation, maybe from excessive sweating or excersize.
Have you installed a Custom ROM.on it in the past but not read or followed the instructions properly, they are a minefeild if you dont follow the guides
Are you using a 3rd party Non Samsung Battery or a different Charger.
Has any hardware on the phone been replaced, such as the screen , camera or body part.. which may not have been put back properly.
Was the phone pre-owned, which case.. the previous owner couldve done anything to it..
Have you installed a faulty SD Card in the past or used an old SD from a Windows 7 or Windows 8 phone without formatiung it.
If the answer to these is No, Ide return it for a replacement or refund.
Good luck

episodes of screen unresponsiveness after updating to kitkat

Hi everyone
So I update my N9005 to the official polish kitkat firmware and I've been experiencing episodes of screen unresponsiveness very often. Anybody else has this problem? Anybody managed to fix it?
P.S I'm aware of the counterfeit/unoriginal s-view flip covers issue which I'm having as well but the thread isn't about it.
Hope someone has a solution.

Hello, I have been experiencing moments of "freezing" or unresponsiveness as well.
For me, it seemed to be due to chrome or using power saving mode. (People in another forum were blaming their droid maxxs freezing problem on chrome) I disabled chrome and disabled power saving mode.
Then I started using opera. I experienced another moment of unresponsiveness using opera without the power saving mode.
I was thinking back to the first times that it happened and it seemed to be paired to the wifi download and upload symbol being active in upload and download activity.
I know that correlation does not mean causation, but I think it is worth exploring if the network activity is causing it to somehow hang.
This bizzar occurance made me perform a factory wipe leading to another round of issues involving processing err_0000, but that is another story; sadly, it didn't even fix the issue.
OP, are you still experiencing the moments of unresponsiveness? If you are, have you noticed the events that are correlated with the event?
Has anybody else experienced this or found a remedy?
It could be one of the apps from the play store that is not playing nice with kitkat, but due to the multitude of other issues, I'd say it is a kitkat or touchwiz flaw.
Thanks for any help.

I had an issue with screen not responding sometimes .....I figured out it was due to the flip case (original by Samsung). Although lately I haven't experienced that either.
Try using the original non flip case and see if you still have the issue.

I have never had a s-view flip case on mine. I use holster iblason case that has no interaction with the screen.
This only started for me once I upgraded to kitkat.

I just cleared the cache, factory wiped, and installed the Russian update N900XXUDNC4 and so far, the phone is a lot smoother. No hangups in the browser yet, but time will tell lol.
It is annoying setting up the phone like new lol. I'll update the post as to if I have moments of freezing or the screen becoming unresponsive.

Battery life is looking good. Power Saving off, bluetooth on and connected to my smart watch.
I made one short call. I don't talk on the phone that much. I mostly use it for Internet browsing, music, and instant messaging/texting. I'll update on Tuesday when I have a full day at school.
Keep in mind though that the n9005 is the lte version. I have a n900, the non lte international variant; our battery life may be different.
Edit: 4/20/2014 same charge 70% 1 day 6 hours bluetooth, wifi, gps, and 1 Gmail account in sync.
Sent from my SM-N900 using xda app-developers app
Even I experienced the same. My phone came with Kitkat installed. Freezing happens when a webpage is loading or the time i turn on Sync etc. strange thing is phone seems smooter when power save mode turned on.
I think it may be a problem that was not fixed until the March 31st 2014 KitKat build. I have been using Chrome heavily since I installed the most recent official rom; I have not experienced any lag or hanging system wide or in the browser. It reminds me of 4.3.
When I wiped and reinstalled the previous rom, I noticed the lag and unresponsiveness right away.
I'm going to use the browser heavily next week. If I have no issues, I think it may be safe to say that the bug was fixed in the latest kitkat with March 31st 2014 build date.
People with lag, do you have the lte variant or the regular SM-N900? I'm starting to think only the SM-N900 are being impacted by sour Sammy updates.
And if you guys wipe your phones, make sure to turn reactivation lock off because it could cause an error that will not recognize your real Sammy account and password. This phone has become stressful; I'm not updating it again lol
