Hey all.
After installing 4.2 on my N7, I have noticed two things that annoy me.
1. The notification bar as well as the settings bar can be pulled down infinitely, very ugly.
2. In root folder there are several folders that lead to the sdcard: 'sdcard' and the folders 'storage-emulated' and 'storage-sdcard0'. Why is that, and can I get rid of the storage folder?

Can anyone at least confirm?

1. That's not a question, it's an opinion
2. /storage existed before 4.2, /sdcard is a symlink. Don't remove them. Some changes were made to where user data is stored to support multiple users; each user on a device has his or her own set of accounts, apps, system settings, files, and any other user-associated data..

The primary user is like the Admin of the tablet. Every other user is like a standard user. You DON'T want a standard user to be able to access your files.
If you want files to be shared across multiple accounts, there are folders with sdcard\(folders) In here you will see folders like pictures and media. These folders are public and are shared across accounts.
Folders in sdcard\0\(folders). These folders will have the same thing, pictures and media. These folders are unique to the '0' user, which is you. As a primary user you can view all the other folders of other users, but other users CANNOT and SHOULD NOT be able to view your folders.
Like I said, you have public folders and private folders. The public folders are in sdcard\(folders)
The ones in (parenthesis) isn't an actual folder. I'm just stating how there are folders here. So don't look for a folder called "folders". LoL!!
Sorry but in sdcard/ of primary user are folders only can access from primary user. If switch to secondary user sdcard/ is not the same. Can someone help me?

I also want to know how to have common folders sharing between different users but I think your answer is definitely WRONG.
I have Nexus 7 without rooting, users can ONLY access files created by themselves, no matter in the/storage/emulated folder or /sdcard folder. When plug into computer (I am using Windows), the files displayed in Windows are also determined by which user are you currently login in Nexus 7...
I don't see anyway to have a common folder to share media files now...

Bwahahahahahahaaa!! You all are right. Turns out I had the same picture in both accountS. Sorry. I noticed that the primary has folders in mnt\sdcard and in mnt\sdcard\0 but other users only have mnt\sdcard. Or maybe it's only me with mnt\sdcard\0. I feel bad now. Sorry.
My name confusion is coming from mnt\sdcard how and mnt\sdcard\0
It seemed that the 0 folder was unique to the user and the folders in sdcard were shared.
What if you make a folder in system? Will you be able to share then? *goes try*
Has anyone found a solution to this? I would like our vacation photos accessible in both profiles but don't want to waste storage space. Movies would be nice also.
Hello,
I've tried to search but didn't find an answer...
I've just got my N10. I want to have two profiles: one for myself, the other for my wife.
The problem is the apps I installed on my own user are not shown on my wife user. I don't want to install twice every app. In addition, I don't want to pay twice for payed apps both my wife and I want to use.
Same problem with media files: pictures I took on my user are not available on my wife's user gallery.
So, my questions are:
1. How can I share apps between users?
2. How can I share media files (photos, music) between users?
Thanks in advance!

Hi, did you find an answer to this? Same problem.
Hi,
1. I've found out that if an app is installed for one user, then when I install it for another user, it doesn't really get installed twice, but uses the same installation. It only makes a separate folder for saving app related data for the other user. In other words - the app is installed only once, but users have their own data, settings, etc.
2. I've also found out that I can define play store on the other user account with my own google account. That means that my wife has her own gmail and all other google things, but the play store on her user is defined with my own google account. By doing that, I solve the payed apps issue - they appear for both of us as already payed and we can just install them on my wife user without paying again.
3. As for shared files (pictures, movies, etc.) - Unfortunately, I didn't find any solution. I still hope that someone can help me with that.

Thanks for the reply Animor, really helpful.
Para 2 makes sense to implement, particularly when I have purchased apps specifically for the Nexus, at least I don't have to buy them twice!
The shared files problem is a bit of an issue, I should be able to share music and photos without having to double up on valuable storage space. Any fixes for this welcome!

Try putting a couple files in /data/media/obb/ and see if all users can access them. If I recall correctly, the purpose of that directory is sharing files between users.

Thanks, but I didn't find this directory on my Nexus 10...
However, I've got a solution from another forum:
Directory /sdcard/android/obb/ can be used to share files beteween users. Basically this directory is used by large applications, but it can be also used for sharing files by adding directories or files there.
It doesn't require root, btw. All users have direct access to it.
Maybe put the shared pictures and whatnot in a Dropbox folder you share with your wife?
Not the exact solution you're looking for, but it might fit your specified requirements.

Thank, but using dropbox is not necessary since I've already found a solution.
As I stated in my previous reply, /sdcard/android/obb/ is common to all users, so I just put there everything I want to share.
Thanks all
Answer
Try using 'SendFile'...Its available on the playstore....very simple UI and u can share any type of file between mobiles and PC's....what attaracted me was the fact that u dont need the app to download the files.....

And following your suggestion, I managed to share files between users.
I am developing a graphical password for android phones. After clicking on certain points on an image, the pixel positions should get stored in the internal memory of the phone or in a file, so that next time the user signs in, the values that the user puts can be compared with stored values. The values stored should not get erased. How do i go about this? Any function? ( Developing in eclipse)

First of all, welcome to XDA!
Second, you may want to take a look at http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html. I do not recommend writing the coordinates to a file on the internal/external storage of a phone (unless encrypted somehow) because anyone could easily look at it. Hope this helps!

So you put the coordinates into a database?
Well, you can also look up all values from a sqlite database: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.andsen.asqlitemanager
Encrypt them.
yeah..put them in database, once u pull the file from the device, i can read it using the sqlite browser.. Its working fine for the application. Encryption yet to be done. Just a novice

[Q] "Insufficient storage available"with so much space available, please help.
Hi before some of you out there start throwing rocks at me hear me out please(I mean it about the brilliant developers on the forum not disrespect intended)
Is a know fact one of the problem than the Nexus 7 (2012) have if this stupid idea of Google not letting us to move applications to the what is presented as a SD storage (I know is not sd card per se) and so far nobody have come with a reliable solution to solve it now the new Nexus is out and I think nobody is going to bother to look in to it.
There is few ways to do it for what i have read but most of them fail 80% of the time create partitions the use of S2E and so on. I haven't still manage to suscefuly do this in a simple and 100% effective move, there is always something I have try many options available and still i haven't manage to move anything last I tried was the upgrade to nakasi because they claim the solve also the lag but nothing is really improving on the applications part so I am back to CM10 and the rest of the gang.
Please don't write nasty answers or call me names that I already know if you going to write something make worth it for me and for many others in this situation, asking about how much music or videos or even applications I have because this is not really the problem this something with in the core. my Nexus is almost empty no pictures no videos no games.
Nexus 7 32Gb WiFi I was on stock ROM, although unlocked and rooted. Now CM10
I have barely anything left on my nexus - and its still giving the same message.
According to Internal Storage settings:
Total Space: 27.58 Gb
Currently 17.90Gb available
Apps - 532mb used 454 available *"ATTENTION TO THIS VALUE"
Pictures/videos - 748kb
Audio - 332kb
App Downloads - 9.6gb
Downloads 4.29 Mb
Cached data - 83.42Mb
I went into settings and cleared cached data too
Please Help and thanks

oscaraperez, on the Nexus 7, the /sdcard folder is actually a symlink to a path in /data/media. It's on the same partition as everything else in /data -- which is to say, your applications. They share the same pool of storage. So there's really nothing to be gained by moving apps to /sdcard.

All aboard the whingemill! Sounds like a classic example of PEBKAC (although there's not often a keyboard or chair involved in mobile-land).
I don't think you understand how storage works on Nexus devices. You don't move apps to the virtual /sdcard location because you run out of space on some kind of /apps partition. Stuff on a Nexus device is in an essentially unified block with the exception of /system, and if you're installing everything there, well, that's your problem.
If you're out of space, you're out of space. Your music/movies/apps matter because, newsflash, they're what go on your storage.

Plus you can use the FolderMount app, and otg-helper to link directories to your USB. I use it to run large games's obb files from the USB, which only leaves the small .akp file on the device. As you can see from the screenshot, I have about 9 gigs of apps on my 8 GB nexus 7. FolderMount is a great app.

I have barely anything left on my nexus - and its still giving the same message.
According to Internal Storage settings:
Total Space: 27.58 Gb
Currently 17.90Gb available
Apps - 532mb used 454 free *"ATTENTION TO THIS VALUE"

Audio - 332kb

I went into settings and cleared cached data too?
I did a search and seen some advice on downloading app Trim (Lagfix). But I can't even download apps (insufficience space).
* I know Android needs 500MB of space free to work with. Every OS reserves memory for various reasons. What puzzles me - is that even when I have deleted lots of games/movies basically everithing already - its still saying insufficient space? Its like no space is freeing up. I've uninstalled/deleted most of the apps.
Even Trying to update some apps I am getting an insufficient storage error - but when I look with System Info I can see plenty of space, including the cache
kj2112, Rirere are you with me?
I know there is not and SD card per Se and the nexus use those 32GB space for everything That is the reason one of the recommendation somewhere was to create and mount a partition ext4 or ext3 and with the help of S2E move the aplication like a virtual external sd card to free some of the APP space
I am calling it SD card for the benefit of other juniors members like me in case they read this post
I try to partition my SD card using ROM manager but is not working. The idea is for the table to think that part of my SD card is create a partition on the SD card that acts like internal memory, not external memory. This partition must be in theformat ext partition.I like a large ext partition because I install a lot of apps. I have approximately 240 apps on my Titanium backup pro. I made the ext partition 1.9 GB.( is recomeded not to go more 2Gb) Note: This supposed to erase everything on the SD card so I backed up first. Benefit: The tablet thinks the ext partition on the SD card is internal memory I have tried to mount the ext partition even used my Ubuntu laptop and gparted and blah blah you guys got the idea better than me for sure because I just fallow others people recommendations.
S2E seem to be working but is clearly not since there is not a mounted "ext" I have also discover researching around than S2E is also having problems with the Nexus7 in particular I have try to contact the developer OlegKrikun but so far not answer meanwhile one guy claim he solve the issue inside the S2E application but din't work for me I have also tried link2sd whit no luck.
So maybe now I have explained myself a little bit better please be patient English is no my language you have some how to read betewnt the lines in resume:
- Out of memory (even after deleting every application)
- only a fresh flash clear everything
- creating this virtual space or ext partition will allow me to install and run few more application (like any other phone will allow me to move to external memory) expanding the 500Mb limitation I know a little bit how the Nexus storage work Rirere
- jfmcbrayer I disagree with you unless I am doing something else wrong the benefit of moving app to this virtual sd (ext Partition) will allow me to install many more aplications.
- kj2112 I can't thank you because you have been plain rude and not helpful.
- bluecarbon thank I was doing that but as you can see there is some other kind of issue my Nexus is almos empty and still is giving me the storage error
Anyway thanks to those than really want to help and I am sorry I will try to change the title

I have yet to see a compelling reason for moving apps to storage. You have the whole thing confused. Your apps all reside in /data except for the ROM which resides in/system. The link you posted has absolutely nothing to do with what you are talking about.
I think you are confused on how the system works and are causing more harm than good trying to circumvent the way Android works.

I don't care about storage issues, and most others aren't either....there are many ways to boost your storage....without an SD card.
If you look at my profile....and please do....you'll see I have however many posts....and almost half that number in thanks given to me. Not bragging at all.....just pointing out that I'm a productive and helpful member here at xda and have the thanks to prove it.
So again......blaming your fellow xda members for not solving your issue is not going to win you any respect here....and will make it even harder for you to find help in the future.

Again.....its not that I am not interested in your issue.....I just didn't like the apparent tone of your title....there are many people here that seem to blame other members and especially rom devs for their problems. And most issues on this entire forum are due to not following instructions and not reading through threads for tips and warnings.
So I apologize for coming across harsh....but its a sore spot for many members here. A lot of people seem to have a sense of entitlement here and are too lazy to read threads, opening posts for roms and even the xda rules. It just gets some people's backs up....like my own.
So good luck with your issue and I'd help more, but aside from storage self management and/or USB storage.....I have no other ideas.

By the way....sounds to me like your system partition is full. That's totally different than your virtual sd card.....which means all you can do is get rid of some big games and apps.
Correct me if I'm wrong someone ....I know my s2's inner workings much more than my N7.

I am not blaming anybody here this is a google even if you guys don't believe me I have plenty space available I have basically unistalled and deleted and clean everything as far as I capable there is no need for storage management here if you notice on the details of my storage. Men I wish I can find again the reference to this problem on the other forum I'll keep looking.

I'm going to call it and say you screwed up a flash somewhere along the line. None of the stock Android devices I own (or any of the test devices at my workplace) have an entry for "free" data outside of the primary report at the top. It sounds like somewhere, you actually physically partitioned off /data or created a virtual container for it. I certainly can't remember ever seeing this issue in Cyanogenmod by default anywhere, and I've used it for a while.

I did a search and seen some advice on downloading app Trim (Lagfix). But I can't even download apps (insufficience space).

Lagfix is an implementation of fstrim, which marks deleted blocks as no longer in use by the filesystem. But it's not a tool designed to increase free storage space. Your OS knows and realizes that it's got space available. fstrim just politely notifies your memory controller that such is the case.

Android doesn't "need" 500MB free, but like any UNIX/LINUX-similar system, Android wants space available so it can page to disk. However, it will pull this silently from elsewhere in the filesystem and it would just slow down if you were truly out of space.

kj2112, Rirere are you with me?
I know there is not and SD card per Se and the nexus use those 32GB space for everything That is the reason one of the recommendation somewhere was to create and mount a partition ext4 or ext3 and with the help of S2E move the aplication like a virtual external sd card to free some of the APP space
I am calling it SD card for the benefit of other juniors members like me in case they read this post

Good intentions, bad idea. When people who don't know what's going on try to use technical labels to describe a problem, it just makes things harder for anyone to help you.

In order to mount your device's partitions on an external device, you would need to configure the onboard MTP to expose more partitions than /sdcard. Since what you're describing isn't default behavior (read: shouldn't be happening), you should stop mucking around with partitions and reflash completely to stock. Since you've created partitions already though, that's not as easy as it would be otherwise.
oscaraperez said:
So maybe now I have explained myself a little bit better please be patient English is no my language you have some how to read betewnt the lines in resume:
- Out of memory (even after deleting every application)
- only a fresh flash clear everything
- creating this virtual space or ext partition will allow me to install and run few more application (like any other phone will allow me to move to external memory) expanding the 500Mb limitation I know a little bit how the Nexus storage work Rirere

If you knew "a little bit," you would not be trying to create partitions, virtual or otherwise. Your internal table is screwed up if this is happening, and I definitely can't recall ever having this issue with Cyanogenmod based ROMs.

- jfmcbrayer I disagree with you unless I am doing something else wrong the benefit of moving app to this virtual sd (ext Partition) will allow me to install many more aplications.

Even if you were doing it right, it would have precious little bearing on how Android is supposed to work by default. The new unified filestructures were introduced in 4.0.x to solve this issue.
Bottom line, revert your partitions back to stock. I don't think can emphasize enough that trying to fix a non-existent problem without fully understanding the underlying technology-- and I mean fully-- causes far more problems than it tends to solve.
Please leave alone men I need help to solve the problem

You quote some of my comment conveniently avoiding others
I reflash to CM10 I have no partion there is nothing screw up because of my wrong doing but I still have the same error I just try to get help to solve went some body is drowning you don't throw rocks at them I make a mistake on the title and I change it and apologize but you still found more issues just take for what it is a grammatical error and error of translation from my language (brain) in to yours. If you can't do anything else but to offend me why don't you just forget about this post and move on let me be a soon I find more reference to this problems i will keep updating the post whit the links hopping for some body to come along a notice and perhaps help me and help the others with this issue.
I know than I no making myself understood but why people don't just come any other explanation about my apparent lack of space and is not true I have no games no music no pictures only few applications.
Some others working with some phones with integrated memory have encounter this issue and solve it with partitions but is not working on the nexus7 why I have no the option to do so like the others and then like them have the option back to move the application on the "App info page" I have and HTC OneX on that phone I can move the application somewhere ( called it virtual external card for example) I use SDMove I have plenty space and after almost 2 years I have never run out of space including music videos games etc how this work How HTC work around this if you can help I will appreciate it
Thanks
Verizon GN3, updated, stock ROM, not rooted.
I have a 64gb MicroSD card installed, and put a copy of my photography website on it. I find I am unable to figure out a way to open it in Google Chrome.
I used ES File Explorer's FTP function to begin with, to copy files from my website to the card, and this worked beautifully. When I click on the index.html file on the card, the only options offered are HTML viewer and some text editors. Chrome is not an option (Chrome is the default browser for my phone).
If I long-press the file, and select Properties, I can copy the Path for the file, but when I paste this into Chrome's URL bar, it won't open:
Access to the file was denied
"The file at file:///storage/extSdCard/PhotoWebsite/index.html is not readable. It may have been removed, moved, or file permissions may be preventing access"
I have searched quite a bit, and tried various addresses, including localhost, localhost/mnt, etc., etc., but nothing seems to work.
Ultimately I want to have a Bookmark in Chrome where I can view my website offline when necessary, but this seems to be more complex than would appear necessary.
Any help appreciated.
Bump - came off first page without any replies.
Does anybody here know how to get an html file on your MicroSD Card to open in a browser??
Seriously? Is there no way to accomplish what should be a fairly basic task: for a browser to open up an html file???
If you use My Files to navigate to the file and then select it does it not give you options as to how to open it?

And unfortunately, no. My Files is a more basic app than ES File Explorer, and when I locate the file with it, and select it, 2 options are given:
Complete Action Using ES Note Editor or HTML Viewer.
Chrome or other Browser are not provided as an option.
HTML Viewer is apparently a type of minimalist browser, but fails hopelessly as a way to view webpages. No controls, no resize, etc. And I haven't figured out any way to get HTML Viewer to send anything to Chrome or other Browser.
As I said, this is really quite puzzling. It should be a no-brainer for a browser to open an html file, regardless of its location. Hopefully I'm missing something basic, but I've done quite a bit of searching and experimenting, and can't seem to find the trick, or particular syntax, to get this working.
Hmmmm.... Very weird! like you said, you'd think it'd be a simple task. I may play around now, just because LOL

I had run across one or two like that in my searching, but haven't tried them yet. I like to keep my systems as 'clean' as possible, and so my first choice would be to do it natively. It seems a lot of the problems people develop with their phones, lagginess, various quirks, etc., arise from some odd app or two that doesn't play well with others, or which fix some problem, but create others.
But reading the reviews of the app you linked to, it does seem to fill a pretty major gap that is apparently present in the Android OS, so may be worth a shot.
Thanks.
That was the first thing that came up in my search and I agree with keeping the phone "clean". I'll keep looking

Well, I went ahead and installed 'Open in Browser.' It installed without problem, ran it to select my preferred browser (Chrome), but when I try to open the file, with either Chrome or the stock Browser selected, I still encounter that same dang error message.
I even rebooted the phone, just to make sure, but no joy.
I have emailed the author of the app, to see what the deal is, and will post here if he replies.
Is there some type of Verizon 'protection' or 'security' software running by default that could be getting in the way? Any other ideas?
No responses from anyone else. This seems to be a built-in security "feature" of Chrome for Android, which prevents it from loading an HTML file from an External SD Card. I can't figure out any way around it.
I went ahead and copied the files to the GN3's internal memory:
files:///storage/emulated/0/PhotoWebsite
And I am then able to open the files without any difficulty in Chrome. I have kept the "Open in Browser" App, as it does add the option to open HTML files to a Browser directly from a File Manager, which comes in handy.
I have created a Bookmark for the link for ready access to it within Chrome, but weirdly, I have to long-press and select in Open in New Tab to get it to work. A simple tap, like any other Bookmark, doesn't work.
Fortunately, I have a lot of available Internal Memory, but I should be able to put the files on the External SD Card, and be able to open HTML files from it.
I am still interested in a way to do this, if anybody has any suggestions.
Ignore - duplicate entry. The forum seems to have a glitch here - every time I post, it warns me it can't post another within 20 seconds, even though I've only clicked it once.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the .html file can also be opened in desktop programs like MS Word, right? Have you tried any programs like open office or QuickOffice?

Thanks for the reply.
There's nothing wrong with the file itself (nor any of those from my website), so yes, it can be open in other programs (including HTML Viewer in my Note 3). The problem, as I currently understand it, is that Chrome (and the default browser on the GN3 as well) has some type of security provision that prevents it from loading HTML files that are stored on an external SD card.
When I copied all of the files to the GN3's internal memory, a "pseudo" SD Card, they can be opened without any difficulty.
Why it is this way, I have no idea, nor if there is any way of circumventing it.
Hi DLCPhoto,
I see the last post here was December 22, 2013.
Have you come up with any solutions as of yet?
I am having the same experience even at this late date using Android 5.1.1 Lollypop in a Samsung Core Prime
Standing by . . .
Unfortunately, I never figured out a work-around. I just gave up and put the files I wanted on the Device's memory, where they can be readily accessed.
I'm still using that Note 3, and don't know if anything has changed with more recent versions of Android.
Sorry...
