Video TUTORIAL: How to Root your Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Install Clockwork Recovery

Hi Guys,
I made a small video tutorial on how to root the galaxy tab 8.9 (GT-P7310/P7300 ONLY) and how to install clockworkrecovery on it based on some tutorials that I came across here.

Thanks for video, it is clear and I am now more comfortable to root.
However, I have one question. Is it really necessary to install Samsung Kies? I have installed the Kies software but failed to connect to Tab. I called Samsung service center and still cannot resolve the fail connect issue (I had tried connect to different USB ports). From the video, the purpose of the kies is seems to allow to copy the root.zip file to tab. Am I right? Thanks.

Glad to help bro.
As for kies, no it is required so that odin is able to detect the phone, kies installs the required drivers to send out the commands to the device so that the firmware can get flashed, it is mandatory to install it

Thanks. So we have to ensure Kies work properly (able to connect Tab) in order to successfully root, else there is potential soft brick, right?

Without kies installing the drivers, odin will not detect your device... this is as per knowledge, someone please correct me if am wrong

No Kies needed for drivers, just go here and download the drivers (tried them myself and they're in my guide too, no complaints so far).

Hope this thread isn't abandoned, I rooted by the video, everything went smoothly, went to play store & installed superuser. Installed fine, opened it, seemed normal. Then I figured I'd test it out by installing adfree. The popup box for permission never popped up & I get the force close or report box for superuser. Have not installed cwm recovery yet. Please help, & thank you

Reboot the device, install titanium backup, get busybox, let me know what happens bro

Thanks for getting back man. Well I put basically the same post in like 3 threads. So anyway, I ended up basically rerooting it with the tool package from one of the other threads, without using keis. It worked fine, flashed cwm recovery & already on my 3rd rom. First I flashed cm9. But am so used to that on my HTC Evo 4g. Second, flashed the aokp & galaxian soup one. This morning flashed just galaxian soup. Thanks again man.

Tab does not go n recovery mode. Black screen instead
I have read the instructions about rooting en installing CWM carefully. The movies are very clear to me.
But....when I restart the Tab with Power and volume - I get the Box with the little Android symbol and the big Android with Downloading Symbol.
I select with volume - the box with little Android and select this with the volume +
The result is that the Tab shuts off instead of going in recovery mode. What am I doing wrong. I have seen this question in some other topics of this forum but never find a good solution.
I already did a factory reset, but that did not help. I am on ANDROID 3.2
Who is willing to help. Thanks

Does this method work if i upgraded to ics via kies?

I wanted to do this with my gf's p7300 but when i choose the recovery the screen stays blank.
Why is that.?
I haven't done anything else with the tab yet only update samsung to 3.2.

On a high note... I tried to flash a custom ROM on Sunday and kinda softbricked the device. After getting it back today from the store I don't want to screw it up again...
Any ideas what I need to do?

Seems that you have official 4.0.4 now. You need to install CWM/TWRP before installing root zip.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. But how to Flash CWM in the original bootloader when the SD is inaccessible as in the pic? Is there a possibility to flash CWM safely through Odin? Sorry for so many newb questions ; after the softbrick I am overly cautious.

I try to update this to the new version.But when i already flash the Stock rom,i want to flash again with the kennel 4.00,IT fail!

I really never heard of a PT-1000. So it is really a risk to advice you.
But if you haven't and willing to try, try out the method for Overcome 4.1 ROM
it is for P1000 GSM though.
you can head to the Dev section, or directly to www.teamovercome.net

Fully charge your tab for 4hrs, just let it plugged in even if no battery icon,
then attemp to flash the GB Stock Safe rom via Odin
If you can then boot it up, then all good.

For charging you just let it plugged to wall charger for long hours, I think.

does the tab charge when you connect it to the computer? if not, you need to try a different cable.
if it does, try reinstalling the drivers

I know that is another download mode,but last time i got try and success to restore back,but this time i dont know what cant connect with my computer.

I've had that symbol before and managed to restore my Tab.
Do you have Odin?
If yes, make sure your Tab is charged - it should charge, you just won't see any progress.
When charged, connect it to your PC. It might not show up in Odin immediately (with the yellow box) but after a bit, if the drivers are there, it should show up.
Then you need to follow the Team Overcome guide and flash the .pit file, the GB Stock .tar and the modem file for your Tab.
If it doesn't show up after a while on Odin, I believe I opened Kies and restored the drivers. I think you can do this even if the Tab is in the state you have it.
Your Tab is soft-bricked, it is recoverable. Read KOsh's thread for reassurance. Good luck!

But what i still confuse is,i still fail in flash the kernel 4.00...

make sure it is the .tar file not .zip file when you are using Odin to flash Overcome kernel 4.0
It is just a kernel, how could you fail to flash it.
I suspect bad download.
Download again and compare the sha1 checksum.

I dont know,but i am download from the link of overcome website.
Am that need bootloader first or root first,just can root and flash the kernel.I saw from the tutorial of http://www.teamovercome.net/ ,there doesn't wrote need root then just can flash the kernel.SO i am confuse...
PS:some of the thought of me when using the 2.3.3 .
I am using the 2.2 froyo before.I feel that when i upgrade,that some place not good then the 2.2,because i am playing the <fruit ninja> and <restaurant story>.I found it is very laggy one,and sometime i am playing the restaurant story and i need to force restart when i just collect the money only.

This is the picture of my miserable failure in trying to get "Official" Status. There is a parallel thread here but because i'm not getting any good progress on it, i'm trying to isolate the issue.
So far, i've tried:
Changing cables x3
usb ports x4
reinstalling drivers
killing kies
uninstalling kies
changing computers
disable and re-enable debug
using another copy of kies but still 3.07
punch my dog
none of those have worked, i'm pretty desperate, i really dont know what to do, i've literally spent the last 5 hours working on this, going into other XDA device threads that had people with similar issues, i'm not sure what i can do anymore
My goal is to get official status, i dont care how i get there but i want to be able to have OTAs.

I am willing to bet you are having a drivers issue. Try to completely uninstall anything you have that includes drivers for the phone (Odin, Kies, ADB, and anything else you can think of. The next step will depend on what OS your PC is running as to how you will need to install the proper drivers. I see that you said you tried to reinstall the drivers, but are you sure you deleted ALL copies from your PC before reinstalling and are you sure you are trying to reinstall the correct drivers?

Yes, i am installing the correct drivers (1.5.14.0). Also i have already use a registry cleaner after uninstalling the drivers to make sure i deleted all traces of it.
EDIT: I've also just tried Odin 3.06 with the same result

First of all, if you are ever using Odin you should be removing Kies to prevent any conflicts from when the device is connected. Also make sure you have USB Debugging enabled (didn't see you mention that in your original post, so just checking).

1.5.23 is the newest drivers, Go download those.

P.S Uninstall your old drivers BEFORE you install these.

i did actually "disable and re-enable debug", and kies is already long gone
i'll try with the newer drivers and report back. Thanks guys
edit: SAME THING DIFFERENT DAY tries with USB_Driver_v1.5.23.0 and it did the exact same thing. I noticed also in the 5 minutes its stuck at setupconnection that my screen was coming on every 30 seconds for about 15 seconds, im sure it has to do with new drivers because it didnt do that before. I dont know why the S4 is giving me such a hard time...i've used odin 20x with my S3 and never had any issues
PPS: I have tried a new computer, the 3rd. My guess is that there might be a problem with the phone, i've tried everything else.

my friend this is 100 percent a driver problem, heres how to get your phone running, go to a friend that doesnt even have a samsung phone
(most likely to have never installed the drivers before) install these drivers

then Reboot the PC/Laptop
then use this Odin

and flash your phone

No it's not. I've tried this 50 times already. I tried it on my laptop, i've tried it on a Samsung Series 9 Ultrabook i bought 3 days ago and my dad's Asus All-in-one, the last 2 computers have never even seen a samsung phone connected. It's not a driver problem.
Anyways, like i said in my other thread:
Well, i never solved the ODIN issue, but in any case, i have achieved my goal of getting official status, i had to restore phone by using the stock format function, i then use motochopped to root again and never lost official status while doing all that. I'll leave it at that for today, this gave me a headache

Omg. Does anybody have a gun so I can shoot myself? I have no idea how I forgot to do this in download mode. This is so ridiculous. I feel so stupid. I don't understand how I could of forgot I used to do this regularly with my S3. I'm so sorry guys

Yeah, i did, it didnt solve my issue with official status, even using Mr_Qs motochopper didnt change much, i hope another root method will come out that will be less invasive

[Q] Grand 2 Duos SM-G7106 does not enter download mode

A customer gave a Grand 2 (SM-G7106) for service, to have a custom rom & recovery installed.
I've been trying to use the method that's available in all the forums (put the phone to download mode, connect it to odin & etc...).
But the phone does not go into download mode in the first place for some reason.
Rather, when I keep holding Vol Down + Home + Power (or Vol Down + Power only) , a screen flashes to say 'Factory mode' for like 2 secs & then, I get these options

I think its not the original set it must high copy so its not going to the download mode .

If its an 4.4.X version then u can use balliboxer's new kikat superior rom u can directly insatll it from recovery mode/install a zip...but bro if it doesnt has base of version 4.4.x be aware device can be bricked...

And Be aware if it gets any error dont downgrade it again to 4.3 aware !!! it will make ur device hard brick...

I got a 4.3 Samsung SM-G7106, with G7106ZNUANK1 from China Unicom (CHU). unfortunately, I can't root it properly. Tried CF-Root, TowelRoot and Framaroot but no luck.

Nah, its not a supercopy, just found out that one of my friend was also using the same phone, same specs, same everything and he bought it on Samsung Store in China (He presented me with the copy of the receipt and box stuffs), so yeah, I think its a legit one since its running well on Kies also (unlike other copy phones which can't be detected thru Kies). Anyway, I found a root program from G7106ZNUANC1 and I forgot the other one, its thru SRS root, but didnt work for my phone unfortunately. :crying:
Hope someone could help me root my G7106ZNUANK1 soon!

I just got also a Grand 2 G7106, and does the same thing - chinese menus instead of recovery mode. Found a video on youtube that explained which single item does, and most are only a bunch of tests, and one for factory reset, but still with this same issue.
I also would like to know how to use odin without entering in download mode.

Hey buddy, try using SRS root software if you wanted to root your phone. If you're lucky enough that its not the G7106znuank1 model, then it can be rooted thru it. Otherwise, you'll be stuck like me. lol.. good luck! :good:

looks like i am stuck with you guys too. Have the same Samsung SM-G7106 . I tried using ODIN to install CWM. Despite Odin saying that it is PASS and device rebooted itself, when i try to go into recovery mode (CWM) it goes into default Android recovery mode instead with (write protected) ... i tried TWRP too using ODIN and it is not working. Tried both Odin 3.09 and 3.10

If you're still looking for a way to root your SM-G7106, I managed to do it with the KingoRoot app.
super simple process. It's based on Chainfire.
I should mention this was with: G7106znuank1

I have a grand 2 g7106 hard bricked and it is totally dead how to solve this problem please help.

VS980 TWRP bootloop after botched lollipop OTA while rooted like a dummy

So yeah. As the title says I had a rooted VS980 on 4.4.2 with some bloat removed and I accidently hit the wrong button when prompted for the upgrade, I was in a hurry. yes, I'm a moron, and yes, I know this is probably wasting someone's valuable time and I thoroughly apologize for my n00bishness
having said that, I have tried to go through various tuts but none of them seem to be working. yes, it's likely that I am simply doing it wrong, but whatever the case I am stuck with my phone in a bootloop always returning to the TWRP recovery. I believe that means it is soft bricked so I'm hoping this can be fixed fairly easily with the right direction and some patience for my ignorance. I can't seem to get it into download mode with turning it off, holding the volume+ button and plugging it in, it just goes to twrp. :'(
my hope is to get a rooted lollipop. if that is not possible then I would be fine with going back to stock or possibly even a custom rom if it's not too awfully complicated. honestly, I'm at a point where I'm beginning to accept that I probably shouldn't be screwing around with it too much and will likely bite the bullet and just keep my phone stock since there are really only a few minor irritants that make me want to root it.
any help is very much appreciated.

actually, it doesn't look to be the same problem. i dont have download mode, but i do have recovery. it boots to twrp like a champ. what i think i really need is how to get the flash file VS98011A_01.zip on my phone via ADB Sideload, specifically when i cant get the drivers to work.
i've tried the following drivers:
LG_VZW_United_WHQL_v2.14.1.exe
LG_VZW_United_WHQL_v2.20.0.exe
LGUnitedMobileDriver_S50MAN310AP22_ML_WHQL_Ver_3.10.1_3.10.1.0
I may very well be mistaken about what needs to happen, i'm no expert, obviously, but from everything ive read any of those should have worked. i think if i can get the right flash on the phone i should be able to flash it via twrp no?

You need to adb sideload xdabbebs download mode restore and flash back to stock. Here is an excellent guide on adb sideloading, download xdabbeb restore download zip and put it where it tells you to. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559200

Just so you know it talks about flashing a ROM, but just use the zip you need insted, because it's the same principal.

i just happened to have a brand new data cable, tried again with same result so its not media related unless there is an issue with the plug itself, but it's charging and the Device manager shows the correct name ie VS980, it just has a yellow bang on it and i cant find a driver that changes that.

which is where i found the "download mode restore" file you mentioned(i didnt see it in the thread you provided), but without the ability to get adb usb command to work i dont see how i can use it.

awesome, ty sir. i happened to have one of those laying around from when i cracked my screen on my old one and couldnt interact with the screen. took a while to find it buried but i have it and i have successfully been able to access a thumb drive. i think that might be all i need.
will report back though regardless.

ok, installed this:
VS980 39A Firmware
from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g2/development/vs98039a-stock-fw-t3051560
rebooted, went straight to twrp again.
installed
Restore to 100% stock
from the same page.
rebooted. it went into an upgrade screen that errored and then rebooted before i got a chance to write down the error. but when it came back up, it started "android is upgrading".
so it looks like this may have worked. again, will update the success/failure when i know for sure, but thanks for the help yall. i really do appreciate it.

Same problem! stupid Ota grrrrr
Your fix worked for me also. Only used the two files listed above and wiped dalvik after flashing both, one after the other with no reboot in between. Many thanks.

sweet, i'm glad someone else found it useful.

Yep, now another problem though. ..no mobile data. .. working on it.
I'd suggest flashing the files in post 12 (I didn't and am having TONS of problems)
So I really didn't get a fix- still working on it.
I have no download mode, and not way to get the serial port to display in device manager, so the LG Mobile support tool won't see my phone....

Nope... its UNKNOWN
And I have not download mode
And I have not cdc serial showing up when connected
And TWRP and Root are gone
I'm starting a new thread for help- I've been working on this for 2 days lol.
