[Q] upgrading from Epic4g, safe to use backup? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hey guys, long time since I've lurked here. I have a Sprint Epic 4g (rooted, CleanGB rom, wifi tether,...) that is finally being upgraded to a Sprint Galaxy S4. I recognize many of the names here from when I played around with my Epic so I feel good this new S4 will have a long happy life.
I have a general question about moving data, apps, etc over to the new S4. While my Epic4G is rooted, my wife's is not (we are both upgrading), and I will probably not root my S4 for several weeks just to get the feel for it first. I was thinking of using something like MyBackup Pro to copy as many of the apps, sms logs, settings,.... etc over to the new phones. Do you see any problem with this?
This is going to be a big jump from GingerBread to JellyBean. I know the typical advice is to "start clean" which is why I wouldn't use something like Titanium Backup even if I rooted the S4. I'd like to save some of the games and other apps status (scores, account info, recent places, etc).
Thanks and enjoy.
Jim M.

I just upgraded from an EVO 4G running Gingerbread to the S4. I used Titanium Backup to restore some of my apps with data and have not had any problems.

[Q] Similar to Stock ROM for MyTouch 4G

Hi guys. I bought the MyTouch 4G last month. Been learning a lot and obviously still learning. Forgive me if this has been brought up, I've tried looking.
The main reason why I want to root my phone is to get rid of some of the stock apps on the phone to preserve phone memory. Is there a ROM that is very similar to the ROM that came with the phone? I really don't have a problem with the stock ROM other than getting rid of those apps.
Can you show me a list of ROM that didn't change much, because I do like the additions that HTC has made on this version of Droid 2.2. Thanks.
Once you root you can stay on the Stock ROM, you don't have to flash another ROM. To fully answer your question though, any of eVil's ROMs (desirehd, desire z) are just HTC ports of other phones. Gorilla's port of the DesireHD is also just another HTC port. Its really personal preference. If you really want to get away from anything HTC/T-Mobile I'd say go with CM6.1.2 or eVil's G2 port.
This really should be posted and moved to the Q&A Section.
Second'ing that this should be moved to the Q&A section.
But to answer your question. Iced Glacier is the stock rom with a lot of tweaks. Think of it as stock on steroids.
But just running stock with root is nice too. I did that for a while.

I've been looking at ROM reviews on YouTube, do any of the Ice Glacier roms have the camera lag issue?
To get exact, I just want to COMPLETELY - with any trace of that program on my phone, get rid of Amazon MP3, Asphalt 5, Yahoo Mail, Monopoly, Rock Band, T Mobile TV, Talk, Stock, and Twonky.
Iced Glacier has Stock and Talk packaged within as system applications. If you wish, you can disable those via the shell, or "freeze" them via Titanium Backup commercial edition. They won't appear anywhere then.
I'm guessing the developers might use those two apps. The rest of the bloatware you listed are gone.

Just use root explorer to remove those apps. Make sure you make a nandroid backup of your completely stock rom and you will always have that to fall back on. It is very easy and will take you 5 minutes.
Heres How
Download the latest version of root explorer.
Open Root explorer and go to System then app.(make sure r/w is on)
Find the app you want to delete and long press it.
Do that with any apps you dont want but be carefull not to delete the wrong things. I suggest not deleteing anything with HTC in the title.
That should get ya taken care of.
To answer your question - I've never had any camera lag issues with Iced.
TrueBlue's steps will get you all set as well.

Wrong section but you should try Cm or iced glacier or remove ur self

Well now that its in the right section, I wanted to comment on the same problem. I searched and this was the only thread I could find pertaining to the same issue. Has anyone found a way to fix the camera lag? Its pretty annoying. I have used iced glacier and it doesnt have the same problem but I like my eViL rom better...?
I know for sure Gorilla's Desire HD port does NOT have tha camera lag (front or rear camera), it is my daily driver now with Faux's OC Kernel with Smartass governor.

[Q] New Vibrant user looking for advice.

I did some looking and finally settled on the Vibrant, which should be here in a few days. I have ordered an extra memory card and a screen protector (invisibleshield) so far. I tried to look through here since this seems to be one of the most comprehensive forums on the phone but I guess its Info Overload? I don't know where to begin. I guess I will just ask the few questions I have and go from there.
1. What would you all think are the top 3 case options that are available?
2. What are some recommended apps?
3. I stumbled on BlackFroyo and wondered do I have to have any changes to the phone to use this? looks great and I am sure there are others out there that will look good to but just using this as a starting point.
4. If I do decide to flash the phone what is a good starting point for someone that has never flashed a phone before? The only CFW experience I have is with my PSP, and that was so simple it was almost a joke.
Might not have placed this in the best location but since it had questions that seemed to cover most if not all of the sub-forums figured general was a good place to start.
Thanks for any help... guess im back of to reading and trying to learn what little I can before my phone gets here.
if you are flashing roms then clockwork recovery/rom manager and titanium backup are must haves.
here are some apps i like/use (copied from my post in a recommended apps thread):
games:
angry birds
horror run!
robo defense
sudoku free
bonsai blast
widgets:
fancy widget
setcpu (also an app)
battery left
apps:
winamp (also is a good widget and has wifi sync ftw)
alarm clock xtreme
chrome to phone
google goggles
gps status
my tracks
titanium backup
rom manager
adw
as for that theme, it was for nero3 (a rom) and will not work with stock froyo or any of the current roms and flashing roms requires root. i'd recommend flashing bionix v 1.2.1 or the 2.2.1 stock stable beta2. for info on rooting and flashing roms read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732458
tunein radio
my first suggestion is to learn how to use ODIN which is in the bible sticky section this will help you greatly if you think you may have bricked your phone. its also a guide to using odin and i think one for flashing rom's learn the in's and outs of flashing. always read up on what you are about to flash. and happy flashing.

Ok makes sense then. make sure to invest in angry birds
the hardest part about flashing a ROM is figuring out what to backup beforehand, not really the act/process of flashing itself. I Still am not completely sure what to backup when I flash I just go to the stickies and try to follow their instructions as best as possible using titanium backup. One thing, for your contacts try to have them all saved to google if you ever flash again so that you can just pull them from there instead of having to do it with an app.
I guess you will be starting fresh so you might have a hardware locked Vibrant, be sure to look up the file you need to flash to get out of the hardware lock if so.
the whole process is pretty much just saving a .zip file to your vibrant's internal memory, rebooting into the "BIOS" I guess you could say, and then going thru the selections to install the .zip that contains the ROM. It is very simple then you wait for the phone to reboot and give it 10 min or so to fully complete loading and you are good to go.
As far as cases go case mate makes some good cases. If you need or want heavy duty then check otter box or trident cases out.
The black froyo theme is nice but you can only flash it with compatible roms. Check out the thread and it will tell you what its compatible with.
Please read the stickies you will save yourself alot of headaches.

[Q] New to Android/S3. Bought Unlocked S3 and have a few questions about Cyanogenmod

Hi All,
Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask these questions. Please let me know if I should move the thread.
Backstory: I bought an unlocked S3 off of craigslist last weekend. I bought a SIM card adapter so my nano-sim from my iPhone 5 will work in the S3. I really love the phone, minus a few issues. I can't get LTE to work, and the battery seems to be pretty bad as it's constantly searching and dropping my 3g cell signal.
It's running Android 4.2.2 via Cyanogenmod. All I know is that this is not the standard Touchwiz OS that ships with the S3 from samsung, and is a variant of the standard 4.2.2 OS from Google.
Questions:
1. Is my lack of LTE due to the OS? Someone recommended to me that I should put the phone back to the stock Touchwiz OS (via Mobile Odin), which would enable the LTE. Think that's the case? Or is this an issue with my Nano SIM and AT&T account?
2. Using this Cyanogen 4.2.2, I don't get any onscreen notifications when I get a text, email or calendar alert. My friends with stock S3's and Notes all get these types of notifications. Am I missing something with Cyanogen 4.2.2 or should I try to go back to Touchwiz?
3. If I were to go back to touchwiz, I was told I could just download it onto my S3 sim card and install/load it via Mobile Odin. Is this the case? This is my first time working with Android phones, so it's all greek to me for now. If I switch to stock Touchwiz, will I lose all of my aps and configurations and have to re-set it up? What other cool things would I be losing?
I really do love this phone and would love to stick with it over my iPhone 5. The lack of LTE, good battery life (probably can be improved with tweaks) and onscreen notifications are making it tough for me to make this my daily driver.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!

[Q] Kid friendly rom? no phone or text

Hello everyone,
I've looked through tons of threads on this and can't find exactly what I'm looking for. I've had a family member drop off a t-mobile mytouch 4g to me and asked me to take out the phone and text capabilities for her kid. She explained that she wanted it to be more how an iPod touch is to an iPhone if that makes sense. I'm wondering if there is a rom that easily accomplishes this as all the threads I've read say do not remove those apks. My niece is three and will be using this for sesame street style games (counting, letter recognition, etc).
Tried the kidzone mode and it was beyond useless, airplane mode is already on and the sim card removed.
Currently this is running 2.3.4 android and 2.1 sense.
Let me know if you have any ideas and thank you in advance,
Drew
I don't think you're going to find that. What's she worried about if there's no SIM card? It's probably better for the kid to just have the dialer and sms vs. having root access. I did the same thing for my three yr old and haven't had an issue yet.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Without a sim card phone and SMS won't work anyway... So nothing to be concerned with. If you are really that concerned with it you could do a root take out what you want then unroot.
The threads that say do not remove those apk's assume you actually want to use the phone as a working phone, not a media device basically.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
If you want, I could take Cyanogen7 and unroot it, then let you flash it.... also if you want, ill take out things like titanium or anything else.

Hi
The Q/A section is for questions, sure! But newbies create individual threads for asking noob questions. Is it not better to create one single thread where noob questions can be posted? Also, every thread created by a newbie doesn't always get answered, creating garbage in the Q/A section. In such cases, I've seen some members creating duplicate threads with the same question but a different thread name. Thought it would be better to create a place where they can at least have hopes to get answers.

Well I'll post here for the meantime, hopefully someone answers so i don't have to create a new thread.
Does the S8/S8+have replaceable/removable batteries?
Pull the battery, put in another. So on, so forth.
Monty informed me that all is well on the property
Thanks in advance.

Samsung hasn't done removable batteries since the S6... and considering all the major manufacturers have made the decision to go the sealed batter route, at least on the high-end market, I don't see removable batteries coming back. :/
It's not AS bad if you plan on changing your phone every 1-2 years, BUT for those who keep their phones for 3+ years, it's a concern. However, most people seem to be on that 1-2 replacement cycle, so manufacturers go with the majority, vs the small subset of people who keep their phones for an extended period.
OK so I've had all the nexus phones since the GNex (except the 5X) and have been happily rooted and flashing ROMS, but I'm a noob as far as recent Samsung's go.
Today I impulse ordered a UK Snapdragon S8 (The device is EPIC in hand)..... What's the likelihood of root & custom roms happening? this could honestly make or break me taking delivery of the device
I presume this isn't multiuser, unless Samsung have changed approach. How do we make it so?
Good evening all,
I'm really excited about getting the S8 plus in a few weeks!! but I have a question, as I have had my brain numbed by the one for all iOS I have lost all knowledge of android and apps that are a must.
with my older android handsets i always had a file manager app that I can't remember what I used for but just know it was one first apps i installed. Anyone got and must haves for the latest android OS?

You can download kidsmode, which can set the phone into limited access environment for children. Also you can use Knox or use secure folder to set separate account with restricted access. But in personal device like a phone, most people carry in their pocket I don't see much demand for full multiuser setup similar to one on PC.

Phone comes preloaded with Facebook, Youtube and a whole Google set of apps. There are few file managers in Play store like ES file manager or Total Commander, but that's a personal preference. You may want to have something for backup, like Titanium, or PhoneInfo for information or 3C Toolbox for details on hardware settings etc. But IMO there is no must have APP, it all depends on your particular use and interest.

How waterproof can it be?
It is there any method to clean the ports of the phone after sea water and sand?
Stupid questions?
Never used Android (iPhone users since day one).
Really want to move to Android while my friend wants to move to iPhone. So we can trade our phones.
She has S8 with T-Mobile (the phone is unlocked because she purchased it) and I have 7plus with Verizon.
She is willing to move to Verizon so my phone is perfect for her.
I read that her S8 can be flashed so it would work on Verizon.
Questions:
1) where can I obtain steps by steps to this procedure?
2) Functionally, is there anything Negative of flashing a TMobile to Verizon? One of my co-worker stated that you can't auto upgrade on the phone firmware down the road and there are glitches.
3) Is this the same as ROOT?
Thank you for your expertise.
After accepting the July security update from Tmobile, long pressing my home key no longer launches Google Assistant, Just Brings up Google Now. What gives?
Shutter Sound on the Unlocked Version of the Galaxy S8
Hi everyone. Noob to this forum and this is my first post.
My question is regarding the shutter sound on the camera. I have the US unlocked version of the phone (not carrier unlocked). I've made tinkers to it already (disabling permissions, etc.). But I noticed the option to turn off the camera's shutter sound is missing. Not sure if this is due to me tinkering or if the option is not even available on the unlocked version.
I went to Verizon today to play with their version, and it has the option to disable the sound.
Can anyone confirm that the stock unlocked version of the S8 indeed doesn't come with the option to turn off the shutter sound? I was going to do a hard reset to see if maybe I discabled something by accident, but would rather not go through the hassle of reconfiguring my device all over again.
Thanks in advance!
hi guys... i am really confused which phone to get. confused btw oneplus5 and S8. can you guys give your opinion on the S8 so it helps me to choose?
the only thing oneplus5 has better for me is the battery life and dual camera. how is the battery life for s8? how much screen on time are you getting with heavy usage?
Hello every one.
I own a french Galaxy S8 bought with SFR (a french carrier).
After certains phone calls (Voice mail, Customer Services) and if the other person hangs up ok google is not reconized anymore.
I tried to flash other firmware, reset the phone, unistall google, clear google data but that's not helping at all.
The only fix is to kill google app via the setting but it's stop working as soon you do a "bad" phone call.
My girlfriend's S7 have the same problem...
The only solution I found is to install newer versions that i can't find in the playstore of google app, play store and google play services taken form apkmirror. The issue is still here but I have to do more calls to trigger it. Strange fact but the last beta of the google app works worse than the previous (behave like the play store version).
I thought turning off the wifi will help because my S8 and my girlfriend S7 have this in common but it doesn't help.
I'm very perfectionist so i had search this issue from weeks but no solition found.
Sorry for my english, I'm French.
Any ideas ?
Have a nice day.

After TWRP is fully flashed correctly amd you can boot into TWRP then flash magisk v13.3 from here
