[Q] Kid friendly rom? no phone or text - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I've looked through tons of threads on this and can't find exactly what I'm looking for. I've had a family member drop off a t-mobile mytouch 4g to me and asked me to take out the phone and text capabilities for her kid. She explained that she wanted it to be more how an iPod touch is to an iPhone if that makes sense. I'm wondering if there is a rom that easily accomplishes this as all the threads I've read say do not remove those apks. My niece is three and will be using this for sesame street style games (counting, letter recognition, etc).
Tried the kidzone mode and it was beyond useless, airplane mode is already on and the sim card removed.
Currently this is running 2.3.4 android and 2.1 sense.
Let me know if you have any ideas and thank you in advance,
Drew

I don't think you're going to find that. What's she worried about if there's no SIM card? It's probably better for the kid to just have the dialer and sms vs. having root access. I did the same thing for my three yr old and haven't had an issue yet.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Without a sim card phone and SMS won't work anyway... So nothing to be concerned with. If you are really that concerned with it you could do a root take out what you want then unroot.
The threads that say do not remove those apk's assume you actually want to use the phone as a working phone, not a media device basically.

If you want, I could take Cyanogen7 and unroot it, then let you flash it.... also if you want, ill take out things like titanium or anything else.

What to do with my vibrant

So, It's that time when my company renews my contract and it get a new phone. What I was thinking is that my kids are little angry bird, and fruit ninja freaks and how cool would it be if they could use my vibrant like a mini tablet. This would keep my gtablet and my new phone out of their hands.
Does anyone know if I could remove the phone and dialing apk from the phone without jacking the phone up. What would be real cool is if there was a rom that would turn my vibrant into a PMP. I also have a motorola Cliq if I could do the same with that I they wouldn't have to fight over it.
Anyone else toying with this thought?

I think you can freeze Phone.apk and DialerTabActivity.apk in Titanium Backup
just take the sim out and let them use wifi for the market.

Best solution! SIM OUT = NO CALLING.

Who would've thought!
Would it still dial 911 without a sim? I would also freeze the phone and dialer to be safe.

Sell it and get them a used Galaxy Tab or some other real tablet.

don't think it has a call function AT ALL if sim is removed, just a notification thing on the notification bar telling you to put in your sim card.

Wow that's way to smart why did't i think of that, oh wait I did I'll be taking the sim card out to put in my new phone.
When the sim card is out it allows emergency dialing only.
I’m wanting to stop the emergency dialing and the sim card missing messages if possible. I'll have to give titanium backup a try and see what freezing the apps does. I’ll try it tomorrow UPS just dropped off my new G2X.
I don't want them to have a tablet either they really want an iPod touch but I'm kind of anti iPod. I’m also thinking the new Samsung galaxy s wifi is going to be out of my price range and the specs aren’t really comparable to the vibrant.

I don't know how to stop the notifications and most of the people replying here probably don't either, so i suggest you PM a Developer here that you know and ask them to build you a flash that will remove crap like that, or if their extra nice, they might make a rom just for you to use as everything but phone.

Thanks I'll try that! Maybe I'll post the same thing on the team whisky forum.
I found on another form where people are doing this same thing just with another phone. They have a script to remove some apk's might just removimg the same apk's with root explorer and see what happens.
Ive been asking for a rom like that forever in the g1 forums...long story short...removing phone and dialer causes a **** ton of fc's, and very hard to work around. Kernal needs to be built to not have any phone functions I think...also a custom radio(again...i think). Wish I knew how to build off of AOSP cuz im thinking that would be the easiest way..

Hmm..I don't know if maybe thru titanium you can freeze or delete the dialer?

Who can build me a custom rom?

Noob here! I hope I didn't post this in the wrong section. I'm wondering who of the pros could build me a custom rom for some htc devices (aria, thunderbolt, and maybe inspire) or if you have one that may be fitting for my needs. I'm sure I could learn how and do it with a kitchen[I made a few for WM devices before]. Or perhaps someone would be willing to walk me through learning how-{I know nothing about programming though}. Right now the Aria is most important as I haven't rooted my Tbolt yet. I find there are lot of roms out there I could try but I need something very stable (I'm giving this Aria to a kid and dont want to have to fix it for him all the time). I don't have the time to follow all this dev stuff and feel like learnig it myself will be a little overwelming...PM me if you feel like
For the Aria...
Im OK with Sense but like to use ADW launcher
Strip out all bloatware including Facebook, Friend Stream, Mobi TV,IM, Mobile Banking, Peep, Where, YPMobile, Weather, Stocks, Utube, Talk, News, All AT&T stuff
Remove Internet App
Remove Gmail & Mail App
Android 2.2 or higher would be cool but not nessiccary
Kill the Market
Ad Google Voice
If you know of a good firewall that can block data except for certain apps (like Voice)
Edit: Swype would be nice too!
Basically He's a kid and I don't want him to have access to all the [email protected] out there That even the cheap stripped AT&T phones have so I chose an Android so i can customize it.
I have a better suggestion, if it's a kid who shall use a smartphone, either change the phone type or go to Wi-Fi Wireless settings in Android and set 3G and Wi-Fi off. A kid isn't smart enought to start the wi-fi and if he does, make sure your wi-fi is password protected (encrypted). Because you can make sure the phone can't access the internet without 2G/3G - Wi-Fi disabled.
Smarter solution then bricking the phone ^^,
If the aria is rooted just uninstall all those apk.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA Premium App
Yeah but why? If he uninstall Market, how will he get it back? Suppose he could find something like Market.Apk or download it from a update or recovery(?).
Sounds meaningless to go throught that much trouble just to make sure your kid can't access the internet.
Sounds like he needs a butt naked Cm7 or MIUI..........or a flip phone lol
Just install CyanogenMod without the google apps that should cover most of it

I'm not sure if this applies to the aria or not, but on my phone (verizon fascinate), there is a file named pppd_runner in /system/bin/ that, when removed, "breaks" data. Wifi will still work (not sure how to break that though), but he will not be able to receive MMS messages.
You need to be rooted to remove this file, and if you want to restore data on his phone you can simply restore the file. I suggest you backup the file somewhere safe and then remove it.
As for the internet-related apps, you could always remove the .apk files from the phone using titanium backup, root explorer, etc.

How old is the kid?
Do as you're told and install a CyanogenMod 7 (clean), chance that you brick your phone is there but if you do it perfectly it's nothing to worry about.
Errr Get titanium backup and unistall what you dont want !

Advice

I have a family member who was talked into purchasing a Nexus S by a Sprint salesperson. They were coming from a Blackberry so Android was quite a shock. At first they liked the phone as it was really fast and did so many more things than the old BB.*
*
However, as they started talking to other Android users, they figured out they they really wanted their facebook contacts to sync or they wanted to be able to type in more than 160 characters in a text message.
*
And of course their 30 days have passed and they will need to wait another 2 years before Sprint will give them another deal.* I know there are 3rd party apps for texting and to sync the facebook contacts, but I am not sure that is for them.
*
So here*are my questions - What options do they have?* Should I have them pick up a used Evo or Epic*off of eBay?*
*
I hear a lot about "rooting" here, but I am a newbie and I have no idea how that works.* Would that be good for them?*
*
If rooting works - can someone point me to a tutorial that explains how to do it (for a Nexus S)?
*
I want to help them but I need some advice.
Thanks in advance!

If you want facebook sync there is an App in the market called facebook sync. I haven't tried it out yet so I can't give my opinion. The other thing you can do is to root the phone and flash(install) a custom rom. Cyanogenmod7 and miui both have facebook sync. A for the text limit I don't really know much about it because I mainly do short texts. I do know that miui splits the text for you when send it out. I don't know if that is what the person wants lol.

Oh yeah for rooting the phone it is really easy. All you have to do is download the 1 click root method and it is really one click and your done. Instuctions come in the zip file. You can also return the phone to stock just as easy, there is a 1 click unroot method
Sent from my Nexus S 4G
First off if u need to ask what rooting is you don't need to do it. Not trying to be mean just saying
Second, app it up there are a million apps ive added apps to sync fb photos(once and done), an app for visual voicemail(once and done), .. What IM saying is you can make the phone do anything thats the joy of android, alot of apps are just easy set up and they do their thing never worry about again..
Experiment, try an app like it keep it, don't delete it... The phone has plenty of space.. Down the road if they want more freedom then look into rooting, read up on it make the decision and then there is a ton of help already here and you'll know what your looking for

I didn't know what root was this time last year, now I can root my refrigerator with my eyes closed I think everyone starts somewhere and a nexus is a good place to start.
I wouldn't switch to an evo or epic because they are essentially gonna have the same features as the nexus. There are a ton of people here that would be more than happy to help you make your family members first Android experience more enjoyable. Whether it be installing handcent to split 160 or whatever, people will help. .

Thank You for the advice. I will try to find some apps to get the phone to act the way they want.
My first two Android phones were the Epic 4g and now the Evo 3D. I feel kinda lucky that my phone has always been how I want it right out of the box.

What about a "media player" ROM?

Along with many others, I am moving on from my still perfectly usable EVO. I have a daughter who wants an ipod touch and I was thinking of converting the EVO. Since she wants the ipod, I was thinking of MIUI with the phone components stripped out. I don't have the skill to hide everything (nor the time to learn). But, I would think basics could be done by most of us...unless there is someone with that skill, and more interest than just me in this becoming a ROM.
ROM or not ("not" meaning a one off that I do for my use), the EVO will be a more than suitable mobile media/game machine as it's been for me since launch day. Anyone else done this?
MIUI I would think. Use Root Explorer to rip our the phone stuff and other .apk you don't want. Leave in Market and maybe Amazon Appstore so she can get games and music

Exactly. If the phone is taken off the account it wont work a phone anymore since Sprint towers won't allow it to make or receive phone calls so it could be considered a mini tablet at that point (powerful mini tablet tho). If your daughter needs to make purchases she can use the wifi radio to connect to the internet.
The other option is to disable the radio... there is an app on the market called network that will allow you to control if you want the CDMA radio to work... you could install the app, disable the radio and then remove the app. This way IF you ever need a spare phone you can revert the process and have the CDMA radio back online.
As far as removing the phone apks... I have seen many threads that indicate that doing such thing might be a bad idea since most seem to bootloop when they are removed. It make sense that it does, after all the EVO is a phone.

This. I once accidentally deleted the phone apk with root explorer and everything went to hell. Had to pull the battery and do a nand restore. Although, I'm sure if you had a ROM that was designed to operate without a phone apk, it would work just fine. Tablets don't have them.

MIUI is perfect for this.
I don't think I will even have to "remove" core parts (wasn't concerned since I have a nandroid of synergy from last night), just hide them. I would have liked using this before, but the 4G was a killer for me...until now.

anyone still using the g1/dream.

If so what are you using it for? Phone or other. Need ideas not going to throw it out due to its beautiful history.

I'm afraid I'm also not using mine for anything, sitting a draw, but like you I'm definitely gonna keep onto it.
Alarm clock? You could get a 1.0 ROM or something and delete almost everything but the clock (and probably need a launcher for it).
Doorstop? It's pretty tough and chunky, and the chin might help.
A remote/Bluetooth keyboard for some other device, e.g. tablet. Idk how this would work, I've looked into it before but can't find answers.
Def sounds like a good idea for a remote. Maybe for you tube app on my TV or something other. Maybe give it to my daughter and tell her to have a ball.
Funny, I just found one of these phones at a garage sale today..... Perhaps some resource-unintensive Linux distro could be ported to it and it could be used as a small Linux box.
Still using mine as a WiFi hotspot. Since I have a free data only SIM with a volume monthly quota of 30GB
I'm using mine as a sacrificial phone when I'm kayaking. It's perfectly capable of calls, SMS, and MP3s still. The touchscreen works through a transparent drybag. I can be confident that if I should wind up in the water and the drybag should fail, it's no great loss.
Mine is with my 2 year old daughter. She play games on it ,really there is no other use.

Mine is sitting in a backpack full of electronics. The camera is broken, though. It doesn't matter; It's running a ICS ROM which doesn't have camera working, anyways.
I lend it to my friend, he still uses it as a primary device !!! he was never interested in smartphones, so he is very satisfied with that phone
I Love G1
Mine, I'm still using it as my primary phone, I really love it.
I just picked up a package deal consisting of an HTC Radar 4G, a MyTouch 3G and this G1.
I have unlocked all of them (using a Lycamobile Sim). Unless I really fall for the Radar, I will probably sell it (worth more than what I paid for all 3) and keep the Dream alive :good:.
But first, need to get it up to Froyo. It will do what I need. It's the model T of Androids.
The MyTouch had a bad sim card holder, so I needed to do some solder work and hack the holder so that the card just falls in from the outside rather than slides in. The back holds it fine, but it probably not very salable (though the outside is in perfect shape)
Update-
Got the G1 rooted and running on Cyanogenmod 6. It was a struggle to find coherent , relevant, current (not really current, but currently working) info on how to work this ancient piece. It has given me a taste for it , anyway and I hope to try another ROM.
Frankly, I am just rambling to get my post count to 10 so I can ask a question in the modding forum....
It was sitting in a laundry hamper that I was using to store a bunch of old CDs and other stuff I don't use on a daily basis. It so happens that the hamper fell from the top of my bedroom closet and now I'm thinking of ways to use this thing, but the first thing that came to mind was to use it as a distraction for the kids. Now that I think about it, it could be used as a remote with keyboard and all. It's running CM6, but I'd like to know if there is a ROM that is very minimal. My phone has no ability to make calls anyway, but everything else works. Any ideas?
