SD Card instability with exfat - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Has anyone had trouble with the sd card unmounting randomly? I have a sandisk 64gb card, and originally it was formatted fat32 and only showed 32gb. Had no issues at all. I couldn't figure out how to make it 64gb with the fat32 format, so I formatted to exfat. Now I get all 64gb, but it randomly unmounts and says the sd card is damaged. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a way to get it formatted in fat32 and have its full capacity of 64 gigs? Thanks

Which way did you format? Through the computer or the phone?

Apparently we're not the only ones with this problem- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031009&nocache=1
I have a 32G SanDisk from the Sprint store and everything was moving along smoothly until a week and a half later, it randomly says "SD Card Unexpectedly Removed." right after "Preparing SD Card." I formatted it through the computer and it still does it and now I just finished formatting it through the phone and now fingers crossed, lol. I've noticed when I'm in the Gallery is when that issue comes up. I can see my albums load up and then select it and view my pics. But when I press the back button several times in a row that I'm trying to get my phone to fly out of where it currently is; that's when the error pops up. Could be a software issue...
If anybody has a solution...I'm all ears

Formatted on the computer first, then formatted with my note 2, then formatted with the s4. All at different times of course, in an attempt to fix it.
Oh ya, and mine doesn't say unexpectedly removed, it says sd card is damaged, please try formatting your card. I'll take a screen shot next time it happens.

My 64gb sandisk did today flashing to another rom. Sucks cuz I had a couple of nandroids on it. Lost about 25gbs worth of stuff. Said damaged so I tried flashing other roms and tried it in my pc but nothing showed on it and required a reformat.
Make sure u keep a nandroid backup on ur phone, along w ur sdcard, just in case.

Man, that sucks brother. I'll guess I'll try a deep scan when my sd card comes in and hope for the best.

Is weird though, because all I need to do to fix it is remount the sd card, then it's fine, until it happens again. It's odd. Never happened until I went to exfat. If I can figure out how to get full 64gb capacity in fat32 format I'll go back to that.

It *may* be the SanDisk cards that are the problem. I have followed the bug since it rose up in the Sprint N2 forums. Consensus has been that a bad batch of cards got out. Some of the tin foil hat brigade have suggested that it is Samsung sabotaging the cards in favor of their own media. If your card is still under warranty exchange it for a new one.

Same here. I thought my SD card was damaged. Phew!

I have the Sandisk SDXC 64GB with it formatted as FAT32. I formatted it with HP Disk Formatter & it didn't like it. I formatted it with the phone & it has been working perfectly for a week now.

Just use the Fat 32 Formatter GUI from Ridgecrop to format the card for use of the complete card. That's what I use and have zero issues.

Is that a free program?

From what I understood, formatting with the phone will format you to exfat, not FAT32

So I've noticed something else. It is a reading issue. Earlier I posted that when I go from the gallery and exit quickly the memory card would give me that error......turns out that it does that error also when it has an issue trying to read the card, especially after I unplug the phone from the computer via the USB. I'm gong to try and focus on using Bluetooth from now on to transfer almost anything from the computer to phone and vise versa. I'll keep everyone posted

It formatted my card as FAT32. I bounched back & forth between PC/phone while messing with it & computer reported FAT32.

Maybe agat or shabby can incorporate exfat support into the sprint source built kernel. The international version has a kernel that has exFAT support.

[SOLVED] Help: WP7 won't create a partition on my SD card.

I am trying to dual boot WP7 NAND and Android SD...
I am following the instructions this YouTube Video: HTC HD2 Partition a micro sd card to install Android and WP7 in the same card but I am stuck on the second part where you have to reset your phone and insert your SD card in the reader to see the WP7 partitions.
When ever I reset WP7, insert SD in reader, and open Partition Master, It only shows 200MB, it doesn't show the unallocated partition. Basically, when I insert the SD card, I only see One Partition, instead of Two partitions (fat 16 and unformatted)
Can someone please explain to me how I can solve this problem?
(I am using ScanDisk 8 GB class 2 sd card.)
PS: I have tried to search this forum extensively, but I couldn't find any answers (I am not sure what other search term to use at this point.)
UPDATE: If you are having problems seeing the WP7 SD partition on your computer, don't use an SD adapter with the built-in card reader on your PC or Laptop, use an external SDHC card reader instead. You can buy one on eBay for like 5 bucks or less, OR you could get one at your local electronics/hardware store for no more than $15.

So you do have 200meg AND Unformatted partitions ??
@1:22 it shows the Unformatted Partition being deleted which means it becomes unallocated..
You need to delete the Unformatted partition..
Then continue on with video..
i assume your using the tutorial from [REF] Tutorial: How to partition sd card to run wp7 and android from same sd card
and following the Third Method.
If you dont see an Unformatted Partition -(no idea why you shouldn't - if it an 8GB card there has to be something beyond the 200meg partition) i'd re-format the entire SD...and start again.
I have reformatted my SD card several times, using (SD formatter), but I keep getting the same results.
Like I said, I am only getting One Partition and that is the 200MB partition on my SD card, whenever I flash WP7 (even when I reset WP7, I get the same thing.) -- I am sure that I followed the instructions correctly, well, up to the point where I got stuck.
If anyone have any other ideas, please share...

Ok, so after a fresh format and before trying wp7 re-install you're getting an 8GB sd card right?
If yes - start again by reseting phone in wp7 with your sd card installed. (settings/about/reset your phone)
let it reboot back into wp7.
goto settings/about
What size do you see under:
Total Storage
It should list 7.xxGB (for your 8GB Sd)
If it doesn't its more than likely that you have an sd card not compatiable for wp7 sorry.
OK, now I see
Total storage: 7.20 GB
Available storage: 6.82 GB
Is this normal?

definitely - and a good sign.
do you have easeus partition installed on your pc, if not install it.
re-set your phone again and stop at the MAGLDR screen. (Hold Power button down)
remove SD and load into PC.
Open easeus partition.
You will see a 200Meg partition and a Unformatted partition....
Continue with Tutorial.
Sorry, for the late responses...I appreciate your patience.
OK, I just reset the phone again, and I have inserted my SD into my PC, and loaded easeus partition; BUT soon as I insert the SD, I get windows message that I need to format the disk in drive __: before I can use it.
Now, in easeus partition, all I see is one unallocated 200MB partition (logical)
Any idea what's going on here?

Well, at the very least that partition should be Primary and not logical...
sounds like a faulty sd card
In EaseUs partition delete all partitions under the sd list. (in pic below i'd delete all 4 partitions shown)
ie in your case the 200Meg and anything else listed (but only for the sd) dont want you deleting your windows OS.
Apply changes so you have one 8GB block of unallocated space and then try re-formating the sd card back to origional 8GB FAT32.
Apply changes...
remove and re-insert into PC, check and make sure windows doesn't report errors.
dump a few files onto the sd and try reading them. (pics or movie)
Providing all good to this stage, repeat re-set phone process..
reboot into wp7 and check /settings/about.... if 7.xxGB Total Storage, remove sd and check with windows... if errors like you just stated i very much suspect a faulty sd card...
If you can take a screen shot (sniping tool in windows 7) of the sd card listing the Disk it would help
like this

This is potentially what you want to end up with (mines a 16GB sd)
One final thing i would try is re-installing wp7 (DWI.exe from PC.)
(I'm running out of ideas due to my limited knowledge sorry)
Thanks, but it's getting late over here, so I'll give it a try and I'll get back to you later today or tomorrow (if time permits)
Again, thanks for your help...
I've given your suggestion a try, but no luck yet. I even tried it with my other SD card that is loaded with Android, but no luck. I think this may have something to do with my computer or something totally unrelated to my SD.
I'd really love to use WP7, while also having my Android.
So, If anyone else have any ideas, solutions, suggestions, please share.

well... you do have 2 sd cards i see, so worst case is you use one for wp7 and one for android.
Means you'll have to swap them out every time you want to change OS.. but it should work...
As WP7 loads into NAND you'll have to load an Android built that is SD MAGLDR compatible.
Hey, Canterbury
I found the problem and solution. The problem was with the built in card reader in my laptop. I guess it isn't powerful enough to read the WP7 partition or something; but anyways I found a solution. I used an external USB SDHC card reader to view the files on my SD instead. So now I can see all partitions on the SD
Thanks anyways for trying to help me. I really appreciate it.

Well actually, I have another problem...I don't have wp7 and android goodness; because I can't get DarkStone SuperRAM 1.5 to work with WP7, or any other build for that matter.
Do you have any build suggestions, or general ideas, about this issue?

I firstly assume your on one SD running WP7, and have partitioned your sd for android.
i use Cope's SD GB-CM7
As your using MAGLDR to boot, (instead of running wm6.5 and executing haret.exe) you MUST use an SD Android build that can support MAGLDR usually using a modified rootfs.img and startup.txt files. (Usually you'll have to copy and replace the two files manually)
Ref here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913964 regarding whats going on. If your a linux buff, the instructions may be of use, but further down the page is what you need...
Yeah, you know what? I tired Cope's SD GB-CM7, but GPS doesn't seem to work, and I really need that to work. It's a good build, but I want to be able to have the full android experience via DarkStone's SuperRAM froyo 1.5. So far, I have only been able to boot DS SR Froyo, but then it freezes and you can't do anything else. I guess I'll have to keep searching for clues, or I'll have to go back to dual booting WM/Android

A2SD+ and CM7/MIUI

So I've been searching online and I couldn't get any straight answer. Everyone else would rather talk about themes and status bar instead of functionality and performance.
So I just realized that my fascinate, running on MIUI FascinateMTD 1.7.15, doesn't support A2SD+ according to the SD card section on my ROM. I've formatted and partitioned my SDcard (EXT size 1024mb / swap size 256mb) and after rebooting the phone doesn't see or detect the EXT partition. So I ODIN'd my phone back to EB01. Then wipe data/cach/dalvik and re-flashed MIUI FascinateMTD 1.7.15. Then using the blue CWM, I reformatted and repartitioned the SDcard with the same EXT/swap size, then rebooted my phone. Same result. My phone doesn't recognize the EXT partition and it still said that it doesn't support A2SD+ . I tried using S2E and DarkTremor's a2sd but nothing worked.
What gives? Can ANYONE provide some guidance on this?
If I can find an old sdcard to use, I'll look I to it. When you said you formatted to ext, how did you format it? From Linux? Windows 3rd party partition program? Cwm recovery? Etc. Ext2, 3, 4?
You also mentioned functionality and performance, what performance increase you expecting to gain by going a2sd? I ask because there shouldn't be an increase by going a2sd. As for functionality, it should be the same unless you need over 1.5gb for apps which is your internal storage size.
But I don't mind trying to figure it out if I can find an old sdcard.
Uh you'd lose performance if you do A2SD because your internal flash speed is a lot faster.
Functionality being able to move some of the apps (that I don't use every day but will need in the future) over to the SD card freeing up more internal memory (performance).
I used the blue CWM recovery v4.0.0.9 that came with the MIUI Rom and the red CWM recover v2.5.1.x to format and partition the SDcard. I do plan on getting a class 4 SDcard this weekend as soon as I get my paycheck.
Been moving apparently to my class 10 d card with appadmin pro(in the market) for a while now. Is this what you guys are talking about?
Mine also states this, I had started another thread a few days ago.
I took all the steps you are, I finally gave up on what the settings say, I remember reading somewhere that the cm7 port doesn't currently support the sd ext partition, (maybe I dreamt this).
However I was able to move apps to my sd card.

If you get the error about not having enough free space, uninstall and reinstall the app.
I'll also note I believe I first got this error after wiping data and installing miui, then restoring from a miui backup. prior to then I could move apps just fine, however the reason I wiped data was because I got stuck in a boot loop when flashing an update so it could of been the update as well.

At one point, when I was on MIUI 1.7.8, it was still letting me move some apps to the SDcard. However, when I went to Manage Application and onto the "On SD card" tab and selected an app that was supposedly on the SDcard, the MOVE to SD card button is still active (not grayed out) as if it had never been moved in the first place.

I guess I look at that tab as a poor
choice of words, to me it implies these apps "can" be moved to the sd card, the check mark tells you whether it is actually there or not.

Moving your apps to the SD card will not help with performance. The 1.5GB that apps are stored on is used only for apps. If anything, your phone will be slower when using the apps on your SD card.
Sent from my CM7 Fascinate, bro.
I installed an app called Link2SD last night. It was able to detect the 2nd partition, mount it, and make the OS mount it at boot time. It can be formatted as ext2, 3, 4, or even fat32. What it does is it creates a link for apk, dex, and lib files of apps and moves it to the SDcard. So far its serving the purpose. I noticed that the latency isn't bad at all when opening apps from the SDcard. Takes a few seconds longer at most. It will get better when I get a class 4 micro SDcard this weekend. I want to allocate more internal space for frequently used apps, I'm an apps hog so my phone isn't going to perform as I expected it to if it isn't able to hold more apps that I want.
Ok so you want more space for the apps you use frequently so they load faster off of internal memory. That makes sense. I really don't believe that you have over 1.5GB of apps but I suppose its possible.

if theres really something wrong with the link2sd,
try to change the partition of your sd card to FAT32,

Sorry I am just running the standard ROM, nothing special and it seems to have installed etc ok.
I have followed the tut, used the mini partition app, and created the FAT32, created the mount script, restarted the phone, and I still am losing the icons off the desktop and the keyboard is uninstalling itself.
How can I check if the items I moved to SD, are actually on the partition, and how can I select that partition as the place to store moved items from now on.
THanks for all you help guys, I am very greatful

I have followed the tut, used the mini partition app, and created the FAT32, created the mount script, restarted the phone, and I still am losing the icons off the desktop and the keyboard is uninstalling itself.
How can I check if the items I moved to SD, are actually on the partition, and how can I select that partition as the place to store moved items from now on.
THanks for all you help guys, I am very greatful

Hmm..
About the icons on the desktop,
I think u shud readd again on ur desktop.. then try te reboot ur phone again..
And if u want to know that the apps has already moved to partition or not,
Connect ur phone to pc.
Open mini partition.
See the partition (the FAT32)
See the "used" column.
If its still "0", then ur apps still not moved to partition.
If its not "0", then its already moved.
If u already created the mount script, then the apps shud be moved to the FAT32 when u link it 2 sd.

So I moved the apps to SD, is that right or am I supposed to link the apps to sd and then move them.
I think there is something I am doing wrong at that part.
They are on the SD, not linked just moved.

If we using ext4 for second partition then its way faster than primary fat32. This mean better I/O speed and percomance.

So do you leave apps on phone and link to SD? How does that work though? That wont free up my internal memory?

I don't think you can have a working ext partition without the phone having a different Kernel at the least or a different ROM (I'm using stock ROM and DoomKernel, with a 1GB ext4 partition for reference). Normal Apps2SD is possible since 2.2 but I think your Kernel/ROM has to support anything more advanced.

[SD SOFTMOD] [A500/G100W] swap internal 16GB memory with 32GB external sdcard

Tested and working on HC321 and ICS403
In this tutorial I will discribe a way to ‘upgrade’ your internal 16GB memory to 32GB, not by soldering a new memory module to the internals of the device but by the means of a ‘softmod’. This method involves changing some system files and is completly done through CWM and is totally reversable. This is the second version of the softmod and is much safer than the first one.
Someone mentioned another thread in the A100 section, and asked me if my way was the same as that one. I checked it out and seemed that all the system changes were done through scripting. The thread author had actually used the recovery killer script that Acer loads at every boot to our advantage. He wrote a damm nice script for doing the right mounts and unmounts at boottime.
The original thread can be found here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20907592
Anyway, I have adapted that script a bit so it can be flashed through CWM, added my own script to it which loads your internal SD in ‘mnt/internal_sd’ and added a modified ‘vold.fstab’ file for removing the ‘detach button’ from the storage info page.
CONS :
-if you use a slow 32GB micoSD card you might experience some speed loss
-by doing this mod, as it involves changing system files, there is always the possibility of ending up with a bricked device, you fully agree to the fact that when your device gets bricked in the process, you and only you are responsible for that !
PROS :
-you will have upgraded your internal memory capacity to 32GB
-you now have high speed access to this 'new 32GB internal' sdcard if inserted in a computer for backups or filling the card up with pictures, music, movies, documents, gamefiles, etc..
-CWM is not affected by this softmod. As a mather of fact if you select the option 'switch to internal storage' in CWM you can actually make use of your internal GB’s for storing CWM FULL backups of your device.
NEEDED :
-32GB sdcard
-CWM must be installed on your tablet
HOW IT'S DONE :
-format the 32GB sdcard to fat32 on your computer
-insert the newly formatted sdcard in your tablet
-reboot or start your tablet in CWM
-flash the ‘CWM - ROMUPDATER [sdsoftmod enable].zip’ through CWM
-reboot
illustration 1
after reboot your storage info should look like this :
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
REVERSING THE PROCESS :
-reboot or start your tablet in CWM
-flash the ‘CWM - ROMUPDATER [sdsoftmod disable].zip’ through CWM
-reboot
After rebooting you are back where you were before this mod, with all your files still on the 16GB internal memory. (as they were before this mod)
If you like the mod and want to keep using it, you might wanna transfer all your old folders and files from the ‘/mnt/internal_sd’ to the new ‘/mnt/sdcard’
FINAL WORD :
-Its best not to remove the 32GB sdcard for backup purposes or whatever when the tablet is running. I advise to shutdown the tablet first, then removing the sdcard, do your stuf, reinsert in the tablet en only then fire the tablet up.
Good luck !

CWM stays unaffected, even more so, you can now use the 'lost' gigs on the internal 16gig for storing your CWM full backups. More info on this in the first post.
Is this only for 32 GB Sd card ore als for 16, 8 GB
Is this much faster then normal use of the sd card

This method can be used with SD cards of any size, only when your internal memory is 16GB I wouldn't see why you would swap that with a 8GB external SD card, or a SD card of the same size. There's nothing to gain. When you do this mod on the other hand with a 32GB or a 64GB SD card you gain space.
Look at it as if you bought the cheaper 16GB model and upgrade it to a 32GB or a 64GB model, not by soldering in another memory module but the easy way with this softmod.
As for the speed it will be limited by the speed of the SD card. This may vary from SD to SD, faster SDs tend to be more expensive. The card I have used is slightly slower then the internal memory, but it is not an issue.
Hi, is this the same a100 mod with apply on boot? Or have you made some new changes to it. My only concern was the OS might create some file/directories in internal memory before your mod executes.
Thanks

I don't know about the 'apply on boot' mod, this is just a tuto I composed from scratch based on my findings when doing this to my own tablet.
If you want to go in detail about what happens : all of the stuff is done @ boot time, and because its based on setting a mount point, that would be done before the os starts writing stuff down. As for the affected partitions by doing this mod, it only affects the '/data/media' partition wich is mounted by default in 'mnt/sdcard'. This mod just disables the system from doing that and instead mounts your complete external SD to that mount point. After the mod the old files are stille accesable by browsing with your root explorer to /data/media.
Btw : I wouldn't recommend doing this mod on any other device than the A500/G100W as the program that does all the work, was specificly written FOR the A500/G100W !
Tutorial updated to v1.2
All needed files are in the attached zip (first post in this thread), including an easy readable pdf with word accentuation on the hard parts of the tutorial.
The title says 64G. I think SDHC is up to 32G. The 64G should be SDXC.
Does the Acer Iconia A500 really support SDXC?
Anybody tried a 64G SD?
Thanks!

I don't have ics, so i can't realy test that. I think that the mount (read swap) is done at login time, thats when you see the superuser has granted acces message. Then again android could be supressing these messages until userlogin. Who will tell?
I'm just mounting manually at boot before the internal sdcard script runs. Working great! Only issue is storage crashes in settings. Must be an ics issue.

I dont know for sure as mine is the 16GB model, but if its Iconia A500 or Packardbell G100W, it should work without a glitch. I would say, test it out and if it does Ill add 8GB to the thread title.
I have an 8GB A500 that is running Thor ROM vs12 and when I tried flashing the zip file it aborted the installation. Do you know if I needed to wipe the system before installing?

Thats odd. An abort during flash sounds like your recovery is not able to execute the commands during flash. You could have a number of problems there. What recovery version are you using (here it's thor v1.6), also is the downloaded zip in a good condition?

Nice sig btw
I am unable to use the DRH_2013 Recovery at all.. It fails to mount the internal or external SD card so I cannot load ROM zips to either one... It also will not mount the ext-sd card when it's inserted into the slot, says error mounting. Other recoveries seem to flash the ROM zip just fine but it just hangs on the black screen once the boot animation is finished. I let it sit for at least 20 minutes.
Thanks, swamped on this end but I'll be happy to drop it on and test how it works with the dock once I get some breathing room over here.

Unfortunately the new recovery requires adb push to transfer ROM over to tablet. If you have a external SD card you can take it out of the tablet then transfer the ROM to it using PC. Then load card back into tablet and install from external storage.

Then there might be a possibility that you SD card might need to be reformatted. The recovery will read fat32 as long as it is formated correctly.if you are using Windows to formats don't do the quick format let it clear out all the 1's and 0's the long way

The only other thing I can think of is trying a different micro sdcard, or if you have used the adb setup before with a DRH ROM. Then you could in th3ory rename the .zip to the same as what team DRH uses and place it in the same directory that there's is located on the ADB setup and load it that way. Haven't tried it myself, but it should work the same since it is just a ADB script.
