[REQUEST] Software buttons - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA,
Is there any way to enable software buttons on Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505)?
There was the way to modify the build.prop file by adding the line, but it does not work.
I just hate hardware buttons and I do really want to disable them...

I have them enabled with AOKP but I'm not sure how to disable them. Anyone know how?
Edit: found out how to disable them. Delete their lines in /system/usr/keylayout/xxxxx_touchkey.kl and reboot. Obviously have another way of navigating before doing that. LMT or some other app.

[Q] Force Orientation for other apps (with root?)

Hi,
I know screen rotation was removed with 2.01+, but is there a way (with root rights) to force a screen layout?
As I am currently developing an app that reads out text messages and sets media volume to max after entering car mode, it would be great to have it changing the layout.
And even if it is not possible to force a mode, how can I enable "Auto Rotate"?
Thanks,
Marc
You can specify which orientations each activity can have in the manifest file

Yes, I know how to change the layout for my app, but I want to change another's app layout ;-)
The only way I know is to change it's manifest file and repackage it

What about spoofing the accelorometers reading... so no matter how you hold the phone it will think it is in the orientation you want

Yeah, I googled that before but didn't find anything. Is that actually possible?

[Q] How can I turn the button's light off?

I got some 4.0 ROMs which do not have a option switch to turn off the backlight of the BACK and MENU button, including the "Liquid Smooth BETA2" and "MIUI by pri..".
However i found them brilliant execpt this tiny bug so I would really appreciate it if any one knows
HOW TO TURN OFF THE BACKLIGHT OF THE BUTTONS?
My device is Galaxy Note.
Thank you.

I think the op is stating that some have the option and we are trying to figure out what they are changing to accomplish such feat so that we may use that option on other roms e.g liquid beta and miui....
Well it requires decompiling the framework-res.apk and editing an xml file called arrays.xml for the disabling to work, and even then it might not work and might also need a change to a hardware lib file called lights.exynos4.so
So unfortunately, it's not an easy task

[psa] [google edition] disabling button lights

Hey guys
I was trying to make my S4 look like the Nexus.
Got the soft nav bar but couldn't find a way to disable the button lights.

I have probably the same setup. Would be nice if we had the Touch Key Light Duration option in Settings like the S3 had (or maybe it's part of TouchWiz). That would be far easier than running another app just to turn the lights off.
I also use SoftKeyZ from the Play Store to customize the on screen buttons.
Nav bar
Can you help with how you got the nav bar? I found some links on xda, but looking for more.
Thanks
Matt

Make sure you're rooted.
go to a file manager that can edit text files ( I used root manager),
go to system/ and find build.prop. open it with an editor,
add the line
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
at the bottom of your build prop, save/exit, reboot.

Yup. This is also what I did. I just used Root Explorer. A long press on the file lets you edit in a text editor.

[Q] Changing the inbuilt button sound

By default, the Galaxy S4 plays an extremely tiresome 'water droplet' sound effect whenever you press most buttons. I know it's possible to disable the sound entirely, but is there any way to change it to something else?
you can change the sound file. but you need root access. its (root)/system/media/audio/ui/TW_touch.ogg

Thanks for the response. How do I go about changing it? Must the replacement file have the same '.ogg' extension? Lastly (on a separate note) is there any way to enable haptic feedback for ALL button presses (e.g. when typing or opening apps)? At the moment my phone only buzzes during calls or when I use the back/home keys. Thanks!

[Q] Long press volume to skip tracks

Hello. I think that title made everything clear. I think that many of galaxy S4 owners need this feature. I know that there is 3Minit app which can do this, but it requires custom recovery and it adds to much unnecessary stuff. I want to keep my phone almost up to warranty. It’s rooted but it isn't very noticeable So I saw that there are simple mods for galaxy S3 that can enable this feature. So would it be very difficult to create something like this for galaxy S4? One remark, it would be much more convenient if long press would change sound and short press - skip tracks. Thanks.

As a workaround, you can try C Volume Rocker from playstore.
Sent from my GT-I9505
Installing xposed framework, and nottach xposed tweaks (you can search for them), will give you a volume button to change tracks options, among other things, and only requires a rooted phone. Very simple to do, you basically just install 2 apks.
Xposed and 3Minit change a lot, mostly visually. I, like the OP author, need only one or two mods without messing up the whole phone or the layout.

I agree! This is the best option for that

So yeah, tried Nottach Xposed and it corrupted status bar (Wi-Fi icon sometimes was not showing signal strength, battery percentage become large). And when I decided to install 3Minit it completely ruined all operating system. I did everything as in tutorial. Then I reflashed everything and same happened again. So wouldn’t it be great to have only pure skip track mod?
Go for Xposed framework and Wanam Xposed mod. Works flawlessly on my phone.
