I've installed the CWM Recovery using Odin now, several times but it will not stick... every time I restart the device (volume up, home key, and pwr), the stock recovery shows up. No CWM Recovery.
What the heck is going on???
It's been the simplest rooting process I've ever done but I can't get the CWM Recovery to show up. There arent any error messages during the flashing, so I'm not sure what the heck is going on...
I installed the goomanager recovery, then installed cwm. Sticks for me. Try that I guess?

Not sure, but something about the new update stops it, check the end of shabby penguin's oudhs recovery thread. In the mean time, I suggest moving question threads to q&a instead of android development...
edit: they said in the thread to make sure you let go of the buttons immediately upon seeing the tiny blue text in the upper left corner on the first boot after the odin flash while holding the buttons down to access the recovery. if you hold them too long, the phone reboots and rewrites the stock recovery... or at least that's how i interpreted it.
re-edit: can't stress enough to please post in the proper section. this is obviously a question about your phone, and belongs in either the thread about the specific development you have issue with or the q/a section. or both. good luck!!!

Yeah, I've tried both as well.
When you attempt to boot in custom recovery mode, I get an android robot with a red triangle with a message saying 'no command'. I attempted it several times after flashing recovery. No success.
Something's gotta be going on... I'm wondering if Sprint did something in their OTA that's blocking the root/custom recovery option.

You should reflash stock rom through odin. When u can't reboot from recovery then you would be stuck with cwm or stock recovery.
Please write the details like what recovery u used like skin1980 or madteam's recovery. What kernel u used wether it has stock recovery or has cwm as default. And how did u install?

Also tried TWRP, Same error. I'm not sure if it's the phone or windows 8.1 x64, But secure check fail points to the phone.. hmm

Hi there.
I'm still fairly new to this whole android world (flashing, rooting,...), so I already apologize in advance for any odd questions from my side, or should any of them sound a bit silly So I was wondering the following: I had Philz Touch Recovery on my previous phone (I9300), and had no issues with it or whatsoever. I've been flashing the Lollipop updated successfully and keeping my device up to date. Which was also the reason why I decided to go with the same recovery on my newer phone model (SM-G900F), which I acquired a couple of days ago. I've done 2 backups already (the so called "nandroid" backup and the backup of the first rom version I flashed).
However...when I was checking out the folder files on my SD card later on I realized that the date stated on those folders is not correct To give an example...my latest backup folders got named "2014-01-26.09.06.40_cm_klte-userdebug_5.1.1_LMY48W" So I was now wondering: does the date on those folders have anything to do here, also can I come across any issue while trying to restore to those backups later on (in case anything goes wrong in any of the future releases)? Due to the wrong stated date on those folders I mean...
Thanks in advance.
Hi all. I just got a second hand SM-G00F a few days ago. I succesfully rooted it, installed the XtreStoLite INTL 2.2 rom it as per the installation guide in that thread. I was able to get into TWRP as normal.
However, today I saw that there was an update in the rom thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63522473&postcount=13226) with links to a 2.3 version, updated bootloader and modem files. After flashing the updated bootloader file with ODIN, i can no longer access TWRP (reactivation lock). I only flashed the bootloader/modem file, not the 2.3 rom. All via ODIN.
I then rebooted into download mode, and flashed the BL and modem files that was in the 2.2 thread again and the phone booted normally. But still, I can' t go into recovery anymore. Flashing anything besides bl or modem via odin seems to be impossible... I always get
Code:

<ID:0/004>
<ID:0/004> Complete(Write) operation failed.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
On the phone screen in download mode, it says reactivation lock: on, know warranty void 0x1. After trying to flash, the line "secure check fail: recovery" is added.
From reading around, I gather the problem could well be with the previous owner having enabled the samsung reactivation lock function. But how can I untick this function since i can't find it in the current rom? And because of the nand write errors, I can't seem to flash to stock rom at the moment. Would that be a problem flashing a PIT file might fix? I've been trying and looking around for sollutions, but I can't seem to find what to do now...
What about if this happens and I'm in a bootloop?

So if I'm looping when I boot up, and obviously can't get to the settings in order to enable USB debugging, how can I "untick" it from stock recovery or Odin mode? ADB will not recognize the device, and I can't flash any custom recovery because of the auth fail secuirty check message. I know it's got to be Knox because in download mode it says "Reactivation Lock(KK)n." It's Android system recovery <3e> LRX21T.G900PVPU3OK4. I have Ubuntu-Mate 15.10, and Windows 10 dual boot operating systems, so any help from the command line or terminal commands/shell commands would be loads of help if anyone out there could help me out. I'm totally fine with resetting the device completely, not just factory wipe/reset, but the big one that deletes all the partitions and everything if it'll do the trick. I can reflash the firmware at that point from Odin or Heimdall, if I could just get past the reactivation lock.
-Thanks in advance-

Hello everyone,
I hate to be the person that joins a forum with an immediate question without having contributed anything previously, but here it goes: looking for some advice from experts on this one. I have an AT&T Galaxy S4 i337 that I recently updated to KitKat 4.4.2 - worst mistake I've ever made, not only do I have constant problems getting GPS locks now, perhaps the most aggravating issue is slow charging. It can take upwards of 7 hours to charge to 100% and I've tried everything including new cable and new battery. The phone can be plugged in and charging and still discharge until it dies. This issue surfaced immediately after I updated and, based on other information I've seen on XDA and other forums, it seems entirely probable this is a software issue since a lot of people seem to have the same problem. Plus, I'm getting tired of TouchWiz.
So I've decided to go towards SlimKat custom ROM hopefully to rectify some of these issues. However, I've had major problems at every step especially being on 4.4.2 (and what I believe is the newer firmware MF3?). Here is a summary of what I've done:
1) Tried rooting the phone through the XDA tutorial on this subforum where you use Motochopper, CF root and all of that, I forget the exact issue but it never worked. I tried for quite a long time.
2) I finally got the device rooted through Towelroot, which I had suspicions about because it was so easy and quick, but after installing SuperSU and RootChecker it's working like a charm!
3) Installed TWRP without success through GooManager... it would download and hang or say successfully installed but wouldn't ever boot into recovery.
4) Tried installing SafeStrap and as soon as I downloaded the lastest version and tried to install it from the app/GUI it would say install successful but the state would be listed as Not Installed
5) Moved onto ClockWorkMod which I had success with in the past on my Samsung Vibrant and CyanogenMod several years ago. I tried flashing recovery from the app and while it says it's sucessfully installed, once again I boot into recovery and I get an blue Andriod for a split second then a dead looking Andriod with a No Command error given. It boots into stock recovery, and it has the custom unlock logo under the samsung POST (or bootup) screen but won't launch ClockWorkMod.
So that brings me to where I am at now. I got the latest GS4 drivers from Samsung, made sure Kies was not installed, went through countless processes/cables USB ports (made sure they weren't hubs obviously) and I keep getting the same error when I try flashing ClockWorkMod for the i337 right from Odin3. I get:

I know the Galaxy S4 i337 from AT&T especially with KitKat 4.4 is notoriously hard to root but I'm on my last nerve with this phone, I wouldn't be so frustrated if the stock OS didn't have so many issues with the update. When in Odin, I tried getting an SGH-i337 16GB PIT file and still got an error so that's not working either. No idea where to go from now, and sick and tired of waiting for AT&T, Google, and Samsung to come out with a fix and network-pushed update.

SGH-i337 has a locked bootloader. That prevents us from replacing the stock kernel and recovery. The only working recovery we have is safestrap.
The bootloader also prevents a downgrade unless the versions are compatible. NB1 and NC1 are compatible and so you should be able to flash the stock NB1 firmware using Odin.
Since you have root already, you can install safestrap after setting SELinux to permissive mode. Use the selinuxmodechanger app from play store for that.
All things AT&T thread.
So I would have to downgrade to compatible NB1 using ODIN (once I do the step you described) and then from there could I flash a custom ROM such as SlimKat? Would safestrap work in NB1 even though it doesn't work in the current firmware?

Since you successfully rooted with towel root, I guess your firmware is NC1.
You do not need to downgrade to NB1. Your safestrap version should be 3.72. Are you sure your safestrap is not working. To go to the safestrap you simply restart your phone. You do not need to go the recovery mode.
You have locked bootloader so you can not use the custom kernel or AOSP rom like Slimkat. You can only use the TOUCHWIZ roms.

Ok,following instructions here: www.androidrootz.com/2014/03/how-to-unrootunbrick-at-galaxy-s4-sgh.html?m=1
Internet is really slow, 1mbps, so started 2.2gb file download and will try it when it finishes downloading, probably tomorrow. Going to post here if it works. Well, July 4th, going to do fireworks later on. Happy Independence day for all of you in U.S!

Remember what I already mentioned. Since you are on NC1, you can only flash NB1 (as they are compatible and we dont have a full NC1 tar file). You cannot flash MK2.
sway8966 said:
Since you successfully rooted with towel root, I guess your firmware is NC1.
You do not need to downgrade to NB1. Your safestrap version should be 3.72. Are you sure your safestrap is not working. To go to the safestrap you simply restart your phone. You do not need to go the recovery mode.
You have locked bootloader so you can not use the custom kernel or AOSP rom like Slimkat. You can only use the TOUCHWIZ roms.

Ah okay understood, thanks for linking me to that thread I will look through those Touchwiz based roms. I was hoping to go to a Google Play Edition ROM too but from what I'm reading a lot of things don't work on it.
Thanks again everyone for your knowledge and advice. In reality do you think flashing a custom Touchwiz based ROM will address my issues or should I just downgrade to NB1? And is there REALLY no way to unlock the S4 bootloader on GSM devices? I thought someone did it on a CDMA version recently.
UPDATE: I should have reread the first post, after installing SELinuxModeChanger and setting it to permissive, I was able to get SafeStrap to install and boot properly.
You need to have selinux in permissive mode. Use selinuxmodechanger app for that.

OK, downloaded first file here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2674223
After flashing, I can do OTA update to get one NC1?
Yeah with the combination of TowelRoot, SELinuxModeChanger, and SafeStrap I now have a rooted phone with a recovery installed, what ROMs do you guys recommend that are TouchWiz based for the i337 NC1? I'm looking through the list and not seeing much.

All the ROMs listed in the all things at thread will work.
Yeah, with hesitation I ended up going with a Google Play Edition ROM to get rid of touchwiz and man did it work well, my only minor annoyances are wifi (as was warned) and the face that MMS pictures are compressed WAY too much when I send them. The charging issue got marginally better but the battery lasts a lot longer without bloatware and the interface is super sleek.

Every time you reboot the phone, you will lose WiFi. You can recover it by soft rebooting the phone.

could you tell me the steps you took? i'm stuck with a rooted samsung s4 also. this is my phones info. i would appreciate the help. many thanks will come your way.
hello all,
First of all, sorry about my english, if something isn't clear just tell me.
Device : sm-n900
OS : 4.4.2
For various days I tried to install a custom rom, and when it showed no success I tried anothers.
After that I tried to install the russian Lolipop stock rom(odin) just to try to get some results, but with no success as well.
While trying I didn't manage to install recoveries other than CWM.
All I can "install" are the 4.4.2 stock rom, CWM(and root), restore backup of the 4.4.2.
I assume that there is a connection between the inability to install the other recoveries, Lolipop stock and the custom roms, but I couldn't find it.
This post(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2613169) showed me some possible direction, but still not a full one(philiz doesn't work and cwm does and after other recoveries flashing there is no recovery to go to until I flash CWM again).
Thanks in regard for any help .
What kind of errors are you getting with roms. How do you install the recoverys. Do you flash the correct modem and bootloader?

When trying with CWM there is no errors in the script, after "installing" nothing happen(I should see something called aroma installer if I got it right) and the phone get into boot loop.
For CWM I used Odin(worked)
TWRP(app, odin, by CWM recovery - no success in any method)
Philiz(by CWM - no success)
Basicly, I didn't saw in guides to flash bl and modem seperatly. In some experiments I tried to flash BL(I am pretty sure the correct one - In download mode and in the setting>>about phone, I saw the difference).
OK I use twrp recovery. When selecting the twrp from there home page be sure to select the correct one as they got a few versions and only one of them will work with odin. The bootloader is a must if you want lollipop builds and without that you will end up in bootloops. If you got Cwm then just stick with that.
Try flashing hyperdrive rom and see if it works. Hyperdrive is kitkat. It's a very stable rom and it works perfectly for me.

Is there Hyperdriveis for sm-n900 too?¿ I found this(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2709867) and it's for n900t or for versions of n9005.
And about TWRP, you mean that there is the tar file which I can flash via odin. Does it matter which version, because there was something confusing in the home page("TWRP Install (Requires TWRP 2.8.4 or higher already installed)" - contradiction )
Just flash the latest tar file. No need to have a previous version of twrp on the phone.
Just make sure that the version you flash matches your phone.

I tried again with caution - I saw in some guides to tick off the auto reboot, flash TWRP, pull off the battery, return it, go streight to recovery
but the result is - stuck on boot screen while going to recovery mode
I used odin3 v3.10 and flashed TWRP 2.8.7.0

You said you can flash cwm. Flash cwm through odin. Then find flashable twrp and flash it thru cwm.
Or you can use terminal emulator to flash twrp. You can find the instructions in twrp page as well.

Tried thru CWM but it said installation aborted.
Tried thru adb(in ubuntu) as usual stuck in recovery on the boot image.
In the terminal emulator nothing happen(I assume it is my mistake, because it didn't even gave response to the command)

EDIT : In one of the previous replies I wrote that I thought I changed the bootloader, but I mistaked it with the baseband(only maybe the bootloader too, I pretty sure yes), sorry about this confusion

I still can, but I assume that there is connection between the inability to install the other recoveries and the custom rom, so trying change recovry can make progress too.
The question is what the difference between the CWM to other recoveries, that make it the only one to be able to be installed

UPDATE : no success from TWRP eather
So I'm trying to install TWRP on my Snapdragon Galaxy S8 so I can flash a ROM. The last device I rooted and got TWRP on was an old Nexus 7 2012, and this have clearly changed since then. Particularly the need for Odin on Samsung devices.
On my phone I get the error "SECURE CHECK FAIL : recovery"
I really don't understand, I've spent the last 3 hours trying to install it and have only run into issues. I eventually tried to just root the phone then easily install TWRP from there, but same issues, different message. Odin simply does not want to work. I'm using the PrinceComsy version, as I've read it was needed. Using the normal version gave me a different error entirely that's not found on the PriceComsy version of Odin. Trying to root led me to completely wipe my phone 4 times now trying, only to fail and restarting my phone wipes it. No matter where I've looked I have not found a solution. Low quality Youtube "fixes" didn't work. And others use the Exynos model which seemingly is much easier to work with in terms of rooting.
If anyone can help, it'd be much appreciated.
EDIT: Can't post an imgur link with a screenshot. Here is the error:

as a side note, if your like me your used to using twrp for backup and restore features also. Chainfire created an app called flash fire (in app store) this app can be used to create backups and restore similar to twrp eventhough our bootloader is locked. It will also flash zips so xposed is possible (was a pain in the ass to implement for me, but possible. The trick was to download an apk of flashfire the exposed framework sdk24 v89 arm64 and the xposed installer and put it on my sd card so as soon as the phone was rooted and booted up I could immediately install flashfire and then flash the framework zip. for some reason if I waited till all the apps had been restored it would bootloop and I would have to start the whole root process over. Anyways thats not what you asked but I though it might be helpful

That partcyborg had a issue restoring a full backup something hung up with the modems and caused a pretty good brick I believe.
So I would limmit it to backing up EFS,System, and User data for restores

Yes this is true, but I add in param persist persistent and miscellanious as those have other useful state and can't brick you if flashing goes bad.
Basically take backups of everything (having a backup saved me from a perm brick) but don't restore anything you don't see in a stock rom (modemst1, modemst1, ssd, firmware) etc
