[Q] media server drains battery - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As mentioned above, media server is draining my battery. But I don't understand which app uses it. Someone got an answer? Thank you

Context would help. You haven't given a whole lot of info to go on.
Think of it like going to see a doctor... you wont get far if you walk into the office and just say "I'm sick" and leave it at that. You need to describe your symptoms if you even remotely expect a reasoned response.

I know and I'm sorry, but I don't know what media server does. Actually, it started draining when I installed a new ROM(pa 3.5).

whoops

nexus and walmart

ive found something very odd. im not really looking for an answer, just sharing.unless you know whats going on.for the past few weeks my wife has told me that when she goes to walmart on sunday morning, her time jumps ahead on her nexus.this is an unrooted device running 2.2.1.naturally i was skeptic.until this morning.i went with her.when we started our grocery shopping she asked to see my nexus.then she asked to see my watch.then she showed me her nexus and it was ahead by one hour.when we got the groceries loaded in car i checked it again and all was back to normal.i then checked all settings and nothing is abnormal.i havent a clue on this.
Bermuda triangle!?
The N1 has determined that it takes approximately one hour to shop at Wal Mart, therefore it is trying within its limit of influence to make you exit the horrid place.

It is the Wall Mart 'Always rolling back' effort. In the real world, your wife did not go shopping, she did not spend one hour there. These are not the droids you are looking for.
since i know where you are located... you are located near a diff time zone. your wifes nexus probably picks up the other timezone, in walmart, and switches accordingly. thats my 2 cents.
Wal-Mart is so big it has dual time zone?
crap man! You are supposed to use a space after a period.

Ok, now that we have something readable... it sounds like you are connecting to a tower that has it's clock wrong. I believe each tower has it's own clock that updates your device. That way each device isn't going out over the main network to get time and other things.

I believe that there is a WIFI box or Cell tower that was moved from a different timezone. Nothing you can do about it.
Eh there is being picky about grammer, there is being lazy with grammer, and then there is writing so awful that a simple sentence makes my head hurt.
probly nvm w/e are understandable for most people, and get the point across, but writing a full paragraph without the absolute basics like capitalization, commas, breaks, and what not, make me personally not want to read what you took the time to say.

What does 4g idle status mean ??

Sorry for shouting, but I'm getting no answers.
Does everyone here also get an idle 4G icon after a short amount of time ?
What does it mean ?
I was under the impression that it's a phone design to conserve battery life, as explained here
http://www.deepeshpradhan.com/nexus-s4g-is-just-better-and-faster-and-its-is-google-phone
But, when mine does idle, it doesn't fall back to 3G, it just remains off, effectively turning this into a dumb unit. No connection.Nothing.
I'm looking for people to prove me wrong and to tell me that when they are idle on 4G, they receive notification INSTANTLY on apps like google talk.
I'm not talking 3 minutes delayed until 4G kicks back in again, I'm talking instant messaging , as it should be.
If I'm proved wrong, I must have a defective unit, but if this is software related, then somethings amiss ????
I have not noticed this myself... but I have seen at least one other thread saying the same thing.
I'd rather take the battery drain.

Because I don't believe you. I believe you must be getting a connection forced when you're having something polled. Or you get them when the icon goes back to green with bars. Not when it's grey with 3 dots. You cannot be. I've checked *#*#4636#*#* when it's idle, and there is simply NO connection.
Chec this for my evidence.

And also because there are multiple threads on many topics. I'm hoping that I catch someone's attention.
I have tested this many many times, and it simply does not work.

Im not arguing that your wrong, my argument is that I do get notifications when 4g is idle.

Appreciate the video, but I think you may have more stuff polling than just gmail. If you revert totally to stock, I promise you will find that idle does not come off for push notifications. I see you have a lot of stiff loaded on your phone. It could be that.
I'm returning my phone tomorrow and getting it replaced. I'll try again.

Ok, do you think I may have a defective handset ? Could it be hardware related ?
I have literally just sent myself another email (at 08:22am) and my phone is sitting idle on my table at 08:29 with no email notification...
It's driving me mad. I literally cannot work like this (I rely on gtalk and gmail for my business)
If this is handset related, I can live with it if it fixes itself when I swap it out. If it's software related, I guess I'm screwed.
I just think that you guys have something that's polling regularly ??
Yet another example.

Why don't you leave it on 3g? I can tell you that from my experience with the EVO, I could never leave 4G on because it'd knock down batterylife to about 6-8 hours.

thats because the evo leaves the connection on. this is the whole point of "idle", so everybody doesnt complain of battery on 4g. now we are faced with a different problem. the video is hard to argue with. lets bug sammy to come up with a solution. until then, those who are affected by this just go back to 3g?

i believe it has been confirmed that 10 bucks isnt for 4g, rather "cool phone tax"
best way to prove it would be to find out if any non 4g phones are paying the fee. again this is what i heard and i could be wrong.

just try another phone then. as far as i can tell i dont have anything else polling, the weather channel widget is the only active item i have.
im clearly not having the same issue as you and of the 5 people responding in this thread only one is having a problem. with 5 threads in 6 days i can tell you 2 things.
1. no one is going to be able to solve your problem if no one else is having iit or can replicate t.
2. no one is going to bother cuz of "oh its that guy again with his same problem" factor.
stop wasting time and go get a replacement before its to late.
try running the widget i got and see if it helps at all. if thats the reason i dont have the problem then i say the fix has been found.

Dude, stop being a dufus.
It's supposed to kick back in in a matter of seconds.
It isn't, clearly as my video shows.
You have a weather widget which probably polls, plus god knows how many other widgets and apps pulling in stuff every few seconds.
I have stock, with no apps apart from a clock on the home screen.
I will be swapp[ing the phone out tomorrow. I will then do the same tests with stock software out of the box,and see what happens when it idles.
I will come back here and let you know what happens. I will humbly apologise for wasting time if it's seen to be a hardware thing, but for now I will hold judgment.
No need to get snarky.

[Poll] Is the Samsung Galaxy Note a "phablet" or a "tablephone?"

I've heard both terms used in the media to describe our devices; but since we actually own Galaxy Notes, shouldn't we decide what moniker our devices carry?
So... if you agree with me, speak up! Cast your votes below. Tell us why you think one is better than the other. Or, if you feel that neither adequately describes our beloved devices, tell us what term you'd use... and why. Personally, I'm partial to "tablephone." Not because it sounds good; because it doesn't. But because "phablet" sounds like a nickname I'd give to one of my love-handles.
So... go ahead and tell us what you think!

I dont see a poll but official under samsung's product line this is a phone.
Non of the above.
It's just a phone, and a very great one.
Shouldn't this thread be under Q&A?
*rolleyes* It's a Mobile Tablet.
Since I wanted each and every person to explain his/her opinion, I opted to not use a traditional poll and instead ask forum members to just "chime in" with their opinions. I felt like that would help to better illustrate not only which term is more popular, but why.

Oh, and as far as the "Q & A" concerns go, I didn't post this in "Q & A" because I'm not asking a question about any kind of problem, and I'm not looking for a right or wrong answer either. I didn't want this posted where people go looking for help. If my Note was having problems and I desparately needed questions to be answered, the last thing I would want to do is sift through this crap while trying to get my problem fixed. I just wanted this to be a playful, interesting collection of opinions and maybe some minor debate. There's no REAL question here.

Sorry, but this is just a waste of time! We've already had two locked threads that I'm aware of regarding "what" the Note should be called.
The primary reason I carry my Note around with me at all times is the phone function, but in reality I spend more time surfing the internet on it than I do using it as a phone. However, if it didn't have the phone function, I wouldn't carry it around at all times, and thus would actually use it far less than I currently do.
Small tablet or large phone - does it really matter?

Dave

You're right. It doesn't REALLY matter what it's called. But I thought it might be fun for some of us to explain why one nickname is better than the other; or create all new nicknames for it. Now I think THAT would be fun. Just think of all the word-play combinations you could come up with. I mean... come on... "phablet?"... is that the best there is? I was thinking of something like "tab-o-phone" or something similar that sounds like an ad agency from the '50s came up with it.
I suppose someone could come along and lock this thread. But I really don't see how it's doing anyone any harm. I honestly just thought it might be kinda fun. If it has offended or hindered you in any way, I sincerely apologize. That was not my intent. You are absolutely right. This is a waste of time. That's the whole point. Require Password to Shut Off Nexus 4....

It their anyway to force the phone to require a password in order to shut down the phone? This is a HUGE flaw that nobody seems to be focusing on. What's the point of having a security app on your smartphone if they can just shut it off and your done? Anybody feel the same way? It's like having a security system in your house and allowing anybody to simply shut it off without breaking a sweat. Are you okay with that? I messaged Lookout Mobile Security and Sent a Request which you can do so here once signing in https://www.lookout.com/help. Just click on Send a Request. Hopefully they can implement this vital feature in their security app. If theirs any smart people out their who can make this feature on their own I applaud you. Your phone will let you know where its at even if its off using Lookout online, but without out the phone screaming (a feature within Lookout that makes your phone emit a really loud sound) it's like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Click on the link and let them know you want this feature. It just makes security apps on ANY phone totally useless without this feature.
What is a thief going to do with a phone they can never turn on? Sure you can't use the security features with it off but they have to turn it back on eventually.

its written in its hardware to shutdown after holding the power button for 10 seconds, you protect your information with encryption, locks so the thief won't bother, that's all, not much you can do once they install clockworkmod, no offense
if the mobile provider does block the imei, you can just use it in another country.
google needs a database to centralize all licensed androids/imei with gmail account to lock it of its stolen or un-authorized and report it.
Well it could be used for other purposes too.
For me for instance. I drove home yesterday from work while suddenly I felt a small vibration from my pocket. Looked and it was from the phone turning off... I must have sat wrong. I'd love a "lock" to not have this happen again.
HOWEVER... there are apps known for freezing your screen (i.e. TouchControl atm).
If you get a freeze you're .... ****ed! so not sure if I'd like that, but it would be a nice feature if you feel safe that you won't get freezes.
Password to turn off phone? It's useless lol.
Take out battery?
ADB reboot?
Anyways, no matter what they're gonna have to turn the phone back on. If not, why would they steal the phone?

I understand your issue but all you have to do to turn a phone off is long press power for around 10 seconds and it automatically shuts down. By that logic removable batteries and SD cards are incredibly dangerous as well. If a thief gets your phone and knows what they're doing, there's not much you can do to get your phone back. The reason most people have passwords on their phones is really just to stop friends messing around with things, since it's fairly unlikely someone will steal your phone if you look after it properly.

The reason most people have passwords on their phones is really just to stop friends messing around with things, since it's fairly unlikely someone will steal your phone if you look after it properly.

Most thieves DON"T know how to do this. Either way this shouldn't stop the feature from being their. Just because somebody can means we shouldn't?
lol this is comical.
The only thing they would have to do is let the phone die within a day by the battery running out. Then they could charge it with the phone off, and proceed to thievery as normal.
If they were to implement this, I can just see the 1st thread after this 'feature' is enabled

A day is more than enough to find your phone when stolen if it hasn't been "TURNED OFF" manually.
I'll tell you what's comical, the responses I hear lol
Really? lol I could put it in a shoebox in my closet. Good luck getting a GPS read on it, and even if you did it's only accurate to 30 meters and I live in apt. complex.
So there goes that theory

What kind of shoe box we talking about? Most thieves aren't smart enough to know these things. The first thing they will do after taking it is turning it off. If it requires a password how will that be possible? I know this solution will not end world hunger or war, but what it will do is provide a bigger window in finding your phone and that's all we need. Is time not relevant to you?
#1 I treat my phone like my wallet (since it is w/ Google Wallet) which means I don't pull it out and set it on a table at a restaurant/bar, I don't hand it to people I don't know who say "hey bro can I use your phone real quick", I don't set it down at a party/friends house/anywhere. It's always in my pocket. You'd have to beat me down to get it, so slim chance of that (good luck..)
#2 Everything I do is password protected (i.e. lockscreen, Google Wallet, Play Store purchases) and I can disable Wallet remotely and change my PW to my Google account remotely.. all my pics/music are in the cloud so there's nothing to lose/steal from my phone
#3 *IF* someone was lucky enough to get their hands on my phone somehow, the last thing I would worry about is if they were able to flash/reset it quickly because chances are the amount of time you're talking about would be ~6-8 hours at best on average unless you were at 100% charge when they stole it
#4 It would cause more problems than it would solve as phones tend to freeze here and there, I guarantee *YOU* would be the only one suffering any consequence of the implementation not some theoretical thief.

How dumb are you? If the phone dies there is no finding it. You don't have to turn it off manually for it to die.

Just got the Nexus 6p...Lag Problem?

So i am going to do more testing on this but i just got the Nexus 6p and i use Google Music ALOT! But when i am using it and turn the phone and it rotates...There is a slight lag with the phone and music. This is right out of the box with the most recent OS update and all updates from the app store. No other apps installed other than the stock apps.
Just wanted to see if this is normal with the phone or a problem. I want to stick with this phone but can not live with t his lag problem at all.
Let me know
Thanks!
I'm not too sure about the phone lag you're talking about, but the music lag when you rotate is because of the speaker channels being swapped; when you hold it portrait, the left channel is played on the top speaker, and the right on the bottom. When you rotate is so the top speaker is now on the right side, the phone will rearrange the channels so the music is now correctly playing on the right channels (right on right, left on left), which is why you hear small gap in the music while rotating.

General lag? Huh? On stock? Latest version?
This is one of the fastest phones I've ever used. I noticed NO lag whatsoever. Just not sure about some of you guys. I think you just like the word lag. Hey, I want my phone to open an app right away when I'm thinking about opening an app BEFORE I touch the icon. Yeah...that's it.

"Lag" is my favorite word! Every time I read it I get off.
That's why I have the Nexus 6p. For the lag and good times.

Why is there always someone like you here? If someone has an issue with your beloved phone, this is how you act? The guy is personally having an issue, it doesn't mean the phone sucks. Give him a break while he tries to fix his issue.
As to the OP, it's probably what has already been said and the slight delay are the speakers switching orientation.

LOL...Puuulease. I'm simply stupefied that anyone who has this phone can have a lag. Hence the reason I asked his configuration which he did not report nor did he answer. How do we know what he's running on this "laggy" phone. There are literally a ton of people on this forum and on YouTube and all over the Internet that say this is one of the fastest and most "lag free" phones they have ever used. But some guy posts and says he has a "lag" with no other information and we're all supposed to be OMG...NOT a lag!!!!! We're all gonna' die!!!!!

You might want to read my post again and see who I quoted and responded to. It wasn't the OP. Not sure what your problem is? Maybe time to relax a bit there dude.

Umm, you quoted me! Lmao.
And like I said before, he said which app he was experiencing lag in within his first post. He didn't say the entire phone was laggy.
He also clearly said it was straight out of the box with no other apps installed.
So you either clearly didn't read the OP or you have some serious reading comprehension issues going on.

Music will pause as the channels switch when rotating 90degrees clockwise
You can change this in build.prop from true to false
ro.audio.monitorRotation=false

He actually quoted one of the other people in this thread, not the OP, or you, and then you engaged him first by quoting his reply to that person. Either way you both need to quit the squabbling, it makes you both look petty.

My point is you attacked him, telling him he didn't read the OP, and that he has reading comprehension issues, but he was never talking to the OP, he was talking to the person who said he was experiencing general lag when he first responded to this thread, which is when you first engaged him. That's why he told you to check who he quoted. Your entire argument with him here is based on your incorrect assertion that he was taking to the OP. For the record, I don't agree with him at all, every phone has lag at some point, including this one, whether people want to admit it or not.

I appreciate you clarifying. Yes, that;s exactly what happened. It's actually a pretty silly argument. I was merely commenting on a drive by post about a "general" lag with no details. I think that is the person that should have to at least explain themselves and not simply post a drive by.
For the record, I've only had the 6P for about 2 months now, but I have NO lag whatsoever and have a LOT of apps installed. Each to his own I guess.
