Slide to wake or touch to wake?

Anybody have insight if this is possible on n4? Would be a downgrade if not possible. I am surprised touch to wake isn't on every phone by now. Bb10 phones are rumored to have it.

I know what you're talking about, I have it on my sensation but it uses capacitive buttons to work and the nexus 4 uses on screen ones. I don't know if you could get out working without a hw mod

I'm sure there are apps out there that do this. The biggest problem with what you want is that the screen/digitizer has to be active to achieve it. With the current unlock system Android, Apple, and Windows Phones have they save battery by making sure the screen is off. Can you imagine the phone always registering every touch? Not interested in an app like that. Tried it a long time ago and it is terrible in real world use. Pgm nexus works awesome. Haven't seen any noticeable hit in battery life since Ive been using it. There are a few kernel I believe that you can use touch to wake, but nothing to my knowledge that has slide to wake/unlock. I rarely ever use my power button. So then lucky beneficiary of my phone soon will get a pristine nexus. USB ports hardly used also because of car and pogo dock and wireless data transfers.

Considering buying but what about screen sensitivity

I saw many posts about screen sensitivity issues with the nexus 4 on launch but as of recently I haven't seen anything posted about it so I'm just wondering have the issues been fixed. I'll most probably get a nexus 4 if they come back in stock but I need to know. I tap very lightly on my phones so it will ruin the experience for me if I have to keep tapping. My windows phone 8x requires me to tap twice and it really winds me up. Please let me know if it's a software issue or if its fixed or basically any info you know about screen sensitivity. Thanks!

The 4.2 build was more sensitive. When they released 4.2.1 the driver changed and the screen became less sensitive. There is a mod in the Dev section to flash the old driver on boot. Touch doesn't work for a few seconds, but after that you're good. It may have changed. I don't know. Regardless, there is a workaround.

Ok thanks for letting me know. I wonder if they will release a better touch driver for 4.2.2. I really hope so!

Funny Story

Do you guys remember when I asked you to help me decide between Nexus S and Galaxy S1? Well if you do remember my main reasoning for the exchange was that I hate the capacitative buttons from under the display? This morning at about 7amI was walking in my home town, playng some music on the smartphone and I notice this new shop for repairing phones just opened up and thats when it hit my, a great ideea! I go in and ask the cashier if I can talk to the guy that does the actual repairing, then I show him my phone. When he asks what is wrong with it I tell him that nothing is wrong and that I want to permanently remove the 4 buttons from under the display to save battery life and make it look loke Galaxy Nexus. The guy looks at the phone, a couple of times, then he asks me a couple of times why I wanna do this (it was morning and he probably thought he's not hearing me right), then he just told me that he usualy is asked to repayr not take out stuf. As I walked out of the shop I lookt back for a second and the guys inside had some stunned faces on, it was preety funny. So tonight I'm sayving all my data, apps and mp3 on my laptop and then tomorow I take the phone to the shop. I'll keep you posted on how battery life is after this moove. I will finally get rid of those stressful buttons

Really you want to completely disable your capacitive buttons by opening it and screwing with its internals? :screwy: Why not just use a software solution like everybody else? There is a possibility that the repair guy screws with more than just the buttons, but then it will be to late. But on the other hand it's your phone and you can do what ever you want with it

In about two months I'll be upgrading so eaven if I dont want to sell my Nexus S it will be my second device, sotr of a mp3 player with cool features, but if all goes well I'll have a Galaxy Nexus or a Note at the beguining of the sommer, I would desassemble it myself but if to afrayd to

But have you even tried back light dimmer, coupled with a mod that completely disables the capacitive buttons? This is a software mod that can be reversed if you don't like it. If it gets opened and modified so that the buttons don't work it will probably be irreversible. I would never do something like that to my precious Nexus S, even if i would be upgrading in the near future

I've tryed but somehow it seames to work best on gingerbread or ICS, with JB it's a little more unstable, sometimes it works really well and sometimes it just keeps lighting up, it's creappy, it's bothering me....you have to understand that the only thing that I hate on this phone are the 4 buttons, it's like painting Mona Lisa with a big ugly mustache, it ruins it all for me

On the other hand, i find them very useful, they function like a warning beacon to when i receive a SMS or a notification.
And usualy, without the notifications, they are turned off.

Step 1. Flash any custom kernel, use nstools, disable BLN and BLD.
Step 2. If you're on a custom rom, go to hardware keys settings and set all button actions to "none"

I made this some time ago, I really wanted the galaxy nexus look, but after some time, it gets pretty boring. I would advise you not to do any hardware mods on your phone, as people said before, its a pretty easy software mod.
This is compatible with 4.1/4.2, if you want to turn off backlights, use NSTools. If you wanna reverse it, reflash the rom.
Flash it with CWM

[Q] Different Sensitivity or Simply Readjusting?

I recently upgraded from the Nexus S to the Nexus 4 and already I've been finding myself making a lot of spelling errors when texting and have been regularly entering my pin incorrectly 4-5 times before getting it right.
At this point I don't know if the screen is just slightly different in terms of sensitivity when compared to the Nexus S or if the larger screen is throwing me off and I'm just a hair shy each time of pressing the right button because I'm use to the smaller Nexus S.
If anyone understand what I'm getting at could it be one or the other, both or something else?

Hah, I'm in exactly the same boat as you (rip Nexus s).
The bigger screen is definitely a factor, but i feel the scroll speed is a little slow

I had the same problem, coming from a OneX.
The screen sensitivity sucks. There is a workaround for it, where it installs the old touchscreen drivers at every system-bootup: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163924
It's MUCH better with that old driver.

It can be done done better and to the best. All it needs the best tweaking in a decent kernel.

Surely it can be done better by kernel tweaking. but I want to use francos kernel wich does still have crappy screen sensitivity, so I'm using this workaround.

Help everyone. After a brief affair with the iPhone 5 this dinner, I have returned to Android via the Samsung Galaxy S 4.
Only problem is the bezels. They are too thin!! I literally can't type on this thing. Its not the size of the screen, I used to run a note, it's the bezels. Mainly the bottom one.
At the moment I run the GPE ROM. This is all fine and dandy, I'm loving the Nexus 4 like experience. But I miss the on screen buttons. They brought the bottom bezel size up significantly, making the typing experience amazing. I need that on this phone. But I also don't want the capacitive buttons. Luckily they dissapear when not lit up. And I found a flashable script to disable their functionality. I just need to find a ROM as stable as the GPE ROM and with on screen buttons and IR support like the GPE ROM.
Does anyone have any ideas? Other than the typing issue I like the phone. It's not nearly as comfortable as the 4.7" screen of the Nexus but its usable and really my only choice to get back to my Android home.

He means soft buttons. Like on the nexus devices.
OP, there's a couple aosp roms in the original Android development section that include soft buttons.

My girlfriend had the exact same problem and he's right - there are some great ROMs on there that will have exactly what you're looking for. There are some that coincide with the haptic buttons and some that are stand alone and do not use them at all.

You should give Task's AOKP a try. He works really hard to make sure it is as stable as possible, and you can activate the on-screen buttons.

Do you know if that ROM supports the IR blaster? Its not extremely necessary just a nice thing to have

One last question, is vibration alerts like really weird on this phone? Not just the ROM, I mean the phone in general. The vibrator is extremely loud, doesn't buzz very well, and with notifications it'll either go off in three very strange bursts or two very short bursts.
This is nothing like my iPhone, nexus 4, galaxy bite 10.1, or really any device I've ever used.
You might think I'm being really picky, but I just want to make sure this is normal

Mine isn't very loud. I think you can adjust what it does for vibrations in settings but if it's new I would exchange it just in case.

Do you mean a replacement phone, or a replacement vibrator?? Remember, if you get a replacement phone, you won't be able to flash any custom roms.

So, this ROM is amazing!!! Well I just have one small issue, the nav bar covers up the bottom portion if NY screen, so typing in the message fields in the Messages app doesn't work, and I can't see the footer in most web pages in Chrome.
Other than that, wow! Smoothest ROM I've ever used! With Dynamic Notifications from the play store the ROM is literally perfect, once I figure out the NavBar issue and how to disable the capacitive buttons (the flashable script I found didnt work :/)

A couple of things:
1. Keep in mind, using Dynamic Notifications on an Android 4.2 rom will result in battery drain while the notification is active. An Android 4.3 rom would be better for that, since it has the new "NotificationListenerService" feature.
2. For disabling the capacitive buttons, it might be worthwhile to move to a rom that has full hardware key rebinding. I'm a big fan of SlimBean. There is a settings screen that lets you choose exactly what each of the buttons does, and you can just set it all of them to "none", and then disable button backlighting in Display settings.
SlimBean has it's own look and feel, because the DPI is very low and the Slim logo is inserted a few places. All of this can be changed, though, if you prefer a more stock experience.
