[Help] Shattered screen - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My son broke his screen on his 32gb N7. The glass is shattered.
The device still works, at least displays the content. I'm not sure about the digitizer.
Anyone know how to go about fixing it?
I'm not afraid of taking it apart and doing it myself. I've taken a few of my old N7s apart to fix screen lift and what-not.
Funny I just saw a Tiger Direct deal for a 32gb for $129 after rebate on Slick deals. I have one... So I'm hoping the 2013 Google I/O has some good news about a new N7 2 that I can upgrade to and pass mine down. I'm not really looking to buy another N7 this late in the game.
Just looking for options.

Is anyone actually happy?

So I picked up my Nexus 7 from GameStop, and I can't express how happy I am about this purchase! I always see everyone complaining about dead pixels, lifted screens, etc. Are there other people out there just as happy as me? I don't see anything wrong with the hardware, and 4.1.1 runs beautifully, couldn't be happier!

It's hard to say, since mine hasn't arrived yet. I'm in Aus, so that's expected.
Most of what I've heard is very positive, though.
I'm happy love it at this price!
Mine appears to be perfect from the play store except the flicker issue.

Its fair to say that reading XDA around the launch of a new bit of hardware you've bought will make you paranoid as hell.
A lot here sit at home with their forensic kits waitng for their new equipment to arrive then put the thing through an hours inspection at least as soon as they get it. They'll have all the weird test patterns for the screen that XDA have produced along with microscopes and measuring calipers.
In other words, if you want to feel good about your new toy, probably best not to come here for a bit.... It can be the OCD centre of the internet at times.
I might be when mine arrives next month if it is defect-free
I recieved mine in Melbourne, AUS yesterday with the screen completely stuffed - Washed out, burn-in and uneven backlighting!
So no, I am not particularly happy, but if mine was good then I would be VERY happy.

I agree 100%, everyone waiting on their 7 should avoid these forums for a minute... when I was on my way to pick mine up, I was paranoid as hell, couldn't stop thinking about dead pixels, or something.. and I usually have horrible luck when I buy retail products, I always get the defects. Guess someone was watching out for me for the 7 ahaha

I had to return mine due to faults, but I'm still very happy with it! Faults happen, esp on new runs, and historically I've been very lucky with my tech. I'm not happy I have to wait to play with it again, but that'll be outweighed by the replacement arriving fault free. Enjoy yours!

Got any pics?
It's a $200 device so you can't expect the screen quality to be like a Pioneer Kuro.... Its a decent screen for the money, but yeah its not HD S+ AMOLED. Its not $800 either.
If mine didn't have dead pixels and screen bulge.....I'm sure I'd be happy.

I admit if there were a few things that were native to the N7 I'd be ALOT happier .( support for flash- I know this is Adobe's main fault, a sd slot , a rear high quality camera, Gorilla Glass instead of Corning® Fit Glass , plastic bezel replaced with a metal one, ) But hey what can you expect with a price just above the $200.00 mark ?
Overall I'm happy so far.
-I'm having some issues with the touch pad/lag in games but I'm now blaming that on immature Tegra drivers .Hoping an update fixes this soon.
Picked up from Gamestop!? Off topic, but you got yours today? As in they just called you and said it was in? =.D

Yes your right, SD card is a big one. For the camera, I have an upgrade in march (Verizon) and I plan on getting the best android phone I could get my hands on. But I have the 16gig so I haven't ran into an issue with memory yet. Also gorilla glass would have been lovely, and the metal over plastic of course. But being my first tablet, for only 250$, I could definitely overlook some of these faults!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I'm not particularly happy. Mine arrived dead, and remained dead even after being left on charge overnight. Reading through these forums, this is the list of faults I've seen.
- Dead on arrival
- Dead after a few hours use
- Light bleeding down side of the screen
- Screen/colour washout
- Yellow tints on the screen
- Image retention lasting minutes
- Dead pixels
- Screen glass bulging
- Creaking screens
- Erratic touch screen / dead zones
- One legged type sound from speakers
- Microphone dead on arrival or failing within days
- Endless NFC force closes on first boot
- Lag
However, I do agree with kitch9's sentiment. I'm guessing only people with faults are posting and I'm hoping there's plenty of perfect devices out there somewhere! It is a human trait to tell more people if you receive bad service, rather than good.
Mines is running perfect and defect free. Always seem like no matter the product, there's always a percentage that has issues or people that has gripes with it. Don't let those mess up your experience with your device. Its a great deal and it performs better than most high end tablets/phones out right now. Its a great deal for the power you get. Very happy to own one.
I'm happy my I/O unit is perfect
Well sort of ie: random crashing (NFC mostly, menu buttons crashed once) flickering, top bar freezing, dead pixels (3 of them), speaker volume sucks. Urgh the glass on this sucks! I have micro scratches already! My 4S and iPad combine don't have as many!
But its all cherry other wise

Picked mine up from Gamestop and it had no faults. I was the only one in my town to pre-order the thing which is surprising. Its because my little Nexy didnt have to share a box with others so he slept unharmed while he was on the plane
Mine is perfect. No lag, no light bleeding that I can see when using, audio works, no screen lifted, battery life is great (first charge last night, and only because I forgot to turn off Dice so it kept the tablet on, doh!).
I love mine. Got a nicely built one , just like my galaxy nexus was. Although we shouldn't be guessing and hoping for products that we are paying for..

[Q] Should I return my N7 32gb? (Screen lift)

Hi all
I bought the new nexus 7(c90) 32gb a few days ago from PC world along with the 2 year guarantee. Out of the box it was working perfectly and I began setting it up as you do .
Anyways after around 10 mins of using it a tiny flake of the silver plastic bezel felt loose and then fell off so I have this 4mm black "scrape" on the corner of my N7's bezel but as this is so small (I will try to include a pic) I am just putting it down as wear and tear
However here is my bigger issue. After reading how many 8gb/16gb N7's had the dreadful screen lift I decided to check mine. It seems that the middle of the left side of the screen is higher than the right side and does not sit flush with the bezel however it's barely sitting a width of a hair above it. I can run my nail from the middle of the screen to the right and feel the bezel is higher than the screen however when I do the same to the left side my nail simply falls off. If I hold my N7 horizontally and look down at it , the left side is higher than the right as the bezel cannot be seen towards the middle of the screen. If you look at the left side you can sort of see the screen bulging out by the smallest amount and if you push on the screen you can see a very very small amount of screen flex.
I would really appreciate any advice. I asked my parents to buy this as a Bday present me as these N7's are really good value for money and this being my first proper tab I really wanted to flash roms ect but due to the screen lift/bezel issue im not sure what to do. PC world claim to refund or replace any item that develops a fault within 21 days. Spoke to my parents and they tell me if it's that small of an issue I’m just better off leaving it. Yesterday I want to a large shopping centre and tested out some N7's(not sure on gb's) and 2 of the 3 displayed a similar issue however due to the rush I’m not 100% sure. Also tested Tesco’s 16gb and there was no screen lift.
I'm worried that after a while the screen issue may get worse. After some reading last night I read that 32gb's are excluded from this design flaw so Is there a possibility of me owning a faulty one? . Do you think PC world would accept these as "faults?" . If I'd never seen the thread on screen lift then I most likely would have never noticed anything. .
Hope all this makes sense, any questions please ask!
thanks!
I bought one yesterday mate from Currys and I didn't think mine was bad until I compared it against the display model in store today. Mine had a lot of screen lift and I could easily get my finger nail between the screen and the bezel, the quality was poor to say the least.
I took it back today and had a really good chat with the guys at Currys and they were mega helpful. I ended up exchanging it for a new unit and its near on perfect so I'm chuffed to bits.
You won't get close to getting a tablet of this spec for the money. Take it back and get another one.

thanks for the reply. I'm also able to wedge my nail in the gap between the bezel and left side of the screen. I am strongly considering returning it back in the next few days however I'm not sure if they will accept it as the screen lift isn't that noticible initially . Also how did the exchange process go?, did you just get a new boxed replacement or did you ask them to open up a few?.
Cheers

-Brought to you by Marino's Nexus 7-
Mine was quite noticeable because even though I hadn't had the tablet a full 24hrs there was already dust and bits gathering down one side of the screen which made it stand out even more. The screen lift was something I could only see getting worse. I actually took the back off for a nosey before I exchanged it and I could see there were missing screws down the side of the bezel which I believe is how Asus are trying to combat the screen lift.
The two guys I spoke with at Currys were obviously in to their gadgets as well and were aware of the quality issues with these tablets and said if I wasn't happy I could have my money back or exchange it for something else, or they said I could try another one and see how I got on. I personally didn't suggest opening them until I found one I was happy with as I appreciate they wouldn't be able to sell them then.
I'm happy with my new one though and I'm really glad I exchanged it.

I took 2 back to tesco both within 48hrs, both suffering screen lift, my 3rd has it ever so slightly, less than 0.25mm but as it's in a case it hasn't got any worse so I'm happy to live with it as is.
So yes take it back as it is a known fault.

I bought one from Staples and after couple of days of use I too found the screen lift on the left side. I finally returned it yesterday morning. Then in the evening I got a new one from Office Depot. So far its free from any defect. I hope it stays that way. Also my new one starts with serial no. CA0K. The one was defective was C90K.

Yes even though there are known issues and we've had bad experiences, don't get clouded in to thinking this isn't a good tablet because it is and I personally think it's well worth the perseverance. Thanks for all the replies!
I will be going in for a replacement tommorrow, I just hope that they will accept it. Like I said before, the screen lift is not very apparent however it is there. If the staff disagree and kick up a fuss that there is no screen lift or the screen lift has no negitive effects then what's the best course of action?
Since buying the N7 and discovering it had screen lift + chipped bezel I don't have the satisfaction of it being "mine",really wanted to flash roms and experiment but the confusion in returning it or not kept me stock :crying: . The N7 I have does not have any light bleed, ghosting and I'm pretty sure the colours of the screen are normal. Should I check this on my replacement N7 when I get it?
Also I'm looking at a N7 starting with C90 right?
Another thought is getting a refund and saving up for a 32gb nexus 10 . Also A N10 would cost me around £200 extra . I initaily went with a nexus7 as it was cheap for the high specs, In my budget and as it is my first android device & tablet allows me to learn & tinker with it with no regret compared to a almost half grand N10. I have also heard on here that many users downsized from a 10" to a 7" . Could anyone shed their opinion?
P.s: I have attached some images
I'm returing mine for black lines , the only thing is I can't find the warranty card . Do I need it ?

I'm so shocked that Google hasn't stepped in to improve the quality on the 32 gig models after all the problems with the 8 and 16. I love Google products but quality must come first not quantity. I used to work for Sony and this would've been totally unacceptable.
Return it and open the replacement right in the store and continue to do that until you get a good one.
Return it right away. The more tablets that get returned because of this "screen lift" the better. Maybe next time they will not repeat the same mistake.

Just an update
Went in and was able to get a replacement N7, Checked this one in the store and it had pretty much no screen lift apart from a very very very slight lift from the left towards the bottom. We also checked another one inc a display model and they were much worse. I also went snooping in various shops to look at the N7 and all of them had some sort of screen lift.
Overall I'm quite happy with the new one, my only complaint is that there is a small amount of backlight bleeding in the bottom left corner if the brightness is set at 100%. If the brightness is on auto or below 50% you cannot really see it unless you are actively looking for it.
I've heard much worse issues with the N7 so I'm happy with this one. Am I right the LED's are only located on the left side of the tablet?
I'd return it again. I've returned 3 and my newest is flawless. there are good units out there, you will find one!

1 Lonely dead pixel (2013)

Recently bought my New Google Nexus 7 (2013) from Bestbuy this past Saturday. and I've loved it, and will keep on loving it. but I noticed one small, lonesome, scared, dead pixel around the left hand corner. Normally this wouldn't bother me, but considering I'm still in the 14 day warranty I was wondering should I honestly waste my time, get perhaps a new unit and maybe the new unit could be worse than the one i currently own?
There's absolutley nothing wrong with the current unit I own, besides the Dead Pixel. and was curious if anyone else had the same issue? would you suggest returning it, and actually get what I truly want. or should i just forget about it. I mean it's pretty hard to see, but just knowing that it's that is just killing me. I have OCD and this is not helping it :|
All comments are welcomed.
Also, does anyone else notice a rattle noise coming from the rear, back camera when you tap on it? not to worried about it. but just wondering if it's something TOO worry about.
Well, I would say bring it back to Best Buy, especially since you are still in the return period. That's what it's for! And if the new one is worse than that one, you can return it too!
I stayed in the parking lot of best buy playing with mine until I was satisfied. I exchanged one within an hour of using it. My second one was perfect! No light bleed or any issues!

I've picked up my 32Gb on saturday and haven't looked back to the 16gb. from what I've heard it gets full quick, and when i first looked at my total storage it said I had 25 Gigs left, so I can only imagine what 16Gb had left.
Got mine via Amazon and it had 4 dead pixels, sent it back and my second one is perfect, no dead pixels.
If it had been one dead pixel, I'd probably still send it back for replacement. So I say get a replacement.
I got a dead pixel too
Going to staples tomorrow and exchange it. I got it from staples online.

i usually turn brightness all the way up, go into a dark room, google deal pixel test and use any
to check for light bleed use dark black ground and check around edged... rotate other colors to check for dead pixels.. pixels are tiny on this 1080p 7" screen
for multi touch look up multi touch tester on googple play and download the app

How is ASUS warranty for nexus 7 bought from amazon US, shipped to Australia?
If i get any problems, i'll probably just live it i guess, the price you pay for being an early adopter
the problem is that you may return this and then get one with 5 dead pixels and dust under the screen. it may take you 6 exchanges and a headache before you're happy. there's no quality control on these at all so you really have to decide. I have dust under mine and a tiny dead pixel on my 2nd one.. returned the first for a dead pixel. I'm keeping the second.. idc anymore.

Nexus 7 (2013) cracked, proberly overheating

I got a nexus 7 2013, and it cracked what I think was from overheating.
I played real racing 3 on it, on max settings. It did get really hot, but it does anyway.
Anyway, went put it down on a wooden surface, and then watched an episode of family guy. When I finished watching it, I picked it up, and there was a crack, left of the camera (about 2CM, 0.7 inches).
I wasn't using a case.
Only parts of the digitizer works. Bottom half works, middle doesn't, but left and right does but has lots of ghost touches.
Should I send it back to amazon or asus?
It was rooted before, but I have been able to put it to all stock, unrooted, ect.

I am not sure that the heat would have anything to do with the crack. I have heard complaints about random cracked screens. How recent is your purchase of the nexus 7? I would talk to Amazon and try to get a replacement because amazon has much better customer service than Asus.

In that case amazon probably won't be of much help, although I would still try them first.
Then try Asus and I hope they will be able to do something because the screen should not crack for no apparent reason

Calling for new cracked edges case

Hello All,
If you recently received a new RMA and have cracks, please report it here. If this still persists, it's something that we should bring attention to Nvidia folks.
I have already sent in for a 2nd RMA. I'm hoping the next unit is good, but I'm not holding my breath.
Just got my new one, nothing yet.

I got my today. I got all 4 corners cracked. For now I will leave it as it is. I just hope that those cracks wont open up the case.
I think people are mistaking the normal and expected straight seams/molding marks. The device Will have 4 straight lines on each corner, that is normal and expected.
It's pretty easy to tell the seam from a crack
+1 I have had my new LTE replacement model for over 2 weeks and no cracks yet. The seams at each corner are much more defined than my previous WiFi model. I hope people are just mistaking these for cracks, although I've seen enough complaints that its probably a real issue still.
No cracks yet. Bought it from Nvidia. I use this thing like a boss!

If I buy now the shield is exempt from the problem?
thx
My replacement has no cracks. To me the crack thing was overblown. Mine had a major wifi issue where it wouldn't turn on. The new one does not have this issue.

Not to sound ignorant, but I just got my tablet a few days ago. I've read about the WiFi and cracked edges issues but decided to take a chance for the specs/price point. I'm very happy with the tablet but don't actually know what kind of cracks to be on the lookout for. Are these on the glass? Or the trim? Along the front speaker grilles or the sides? I see the 4 straight seems as mentioned before... Are those cracking open? Just wanting to know what to watch out for.

Cracks shouldn't be an issue now. And even if you manage to get one from an early batch RMA is easy to do and they will send you a new one before yoi ship the defective one.

Shield has all those things. Nexus 9 has a nice screen ratio, but the Shield will fit in a pocket. Just depends on what you are looking for.
