Just played w/ S4 for 30min... - Galaxy Note II General

and O MY God that camera is brilliant!
All settings the same including resolution and it blew my note out of Lake Michigan!

I hope after taking the photos you transferred it to PC or some bigger screens. Seeing it on S4 itself will look the even worst photo good, for it's beautiful and smaller display.

In part I'm sure I read in a number of the reviews that the camera performance was "comparable" to the note... So wasn't expecting That much...but it was fine....more like comparable to IPhone5 which I think is the best...

First, You own a Note 1 not Note 2
Sec, This is the Note 2 section not the S4 or Note 1
Third, You lost me at the IP5 camera is the best part

Um, stating the obvious? And which reviews said that? Must have missed them.
[email protected] camera, BTW. Note 2's camera is comparable to iPhone 5 and camera isn't N2's strong suit, mind.

I love my note 2 and I love android, but camon guys iPhone camera is better than any samsung device camera specialy in dark environment and this thing is killing me, if I am mistaken please let me know what are the settings you are using in your note 2 camera.

Mate I have respect to you but this is a completely moot statement. I don't know if you have used the iPhone 5 camera or not, but undoubtedly the iPhone 5 camera is one of the best cell phone camera I have ever used. The winner for me would be the Pureview, and then joint winner will be both Lumia 920 and iPhone 5. Honestly you don't need iPhone 5, even iPhone 4S can beat Note 2 camera hands down.
Doesn't matter how much I hate iPhone, and Apple, what is good, is good. Besides the sensor is of Sony!
And a small request to all who comments crap about the iPhone, first use a phone, then comment. If you haven't used a phone, then how on earth are you commenting, what's the base? Stupidity?
Comment came from a semi-pro D-SLR user and a huge enthusiast of photography (5D Mark II, D5100).

Wow, a later revision of hardware is superior to an earlier version of hardware?
This *is* a shock.

I'm a mobile camera prioritizer, and a few here are really fanboyin the camera issue...I'll just say it this way: all Samsung Mobile cameras have fallen short of the iPhone camera in image quality. All. ...pretty much accepted even with android fanatics like me. Sorry to break the bad news.
And my point wasn't to express 'surprise 'that the new hardware is better...it's the extent that it was better. (Note 2 was marginally better than Note1 w/camera so new hardware doesn't guarantee feature quality improvement).

The iPhone 5 probably does have a better camera... However that's because besides making it thinner and lighter that is the ONLY real feature Apple has added/changed with the phone. Since the iPhone 4 the phone has been the same. And since iOS 1.0 the software has been the same.... Samsung might not have the best camera quality, but that's because they put out a vastly different phone from generation to generation ie. Note 1 to Note 2.

I have used an iPhone and yes, I still stand by the statement that iPhone camera is comparable to Note II (although I'd rate it slightly higher).
Still, we'd give the iPhone 5 the nod here, but keep in mind that it's a win by the narrowest of margins.

Probably it's not just me being "stupid" here, to be honest (quoted S3 reviews since it's almost the same Camera and has direct comparisons with IP5) The only cameras that managed to really impress me is the One and S4. Anywho, lets agree to disagree.
PS: Own Canon EOS 500D (well owned really, gifted it to my brother since I don't do much photography anymore)

4s camera is nice I tried it, I meant the devices older than s4.

I don't know about you guys, but personally I purchased a phone and not a camera? Since all phone pictures look like crap (compared to a CAMERA) it doesn't matter if it comes with 5/10/100 megapixels. If I want to take good pictures, I use my old Casio 6Mp. It wipes the competition (phone wise) clean off. And Iphone is NO different from other phones - the camera SUX!
My 2 cents...

GS 2 vs Iphone 4 (camera, browsing, etc)

For video recording, i think galaxy s2 is better compare to iphone 4...
The gs2's camera has a sense of clarity i really like and the iphone 4's camera has more vibrant colors.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yes, galaxy s 2 is total win for me because all the colours are natural.
Using GSMarena's photo compare tool the SGSII is significantly better than the iPhone 4. Its video is also better. Its browser is much better. In all the categories mentioned in the OPs thread the winner is clear.
For me sharpness and clarity are the most important things for the camera. Colour can be fixed easily in photoshop. Even the old pink centre glow issue the early HD2 ROMs had could be fixed
The overall image quality is definetly better (especially in the night video!), however one can clearly see that the S2 struggles with auto-focus (something that's been mentioned in many reviews too). Hoping it can be improved with software updates, but I'm afraid its a flaw in the hardware used by Samsung.
@ around 1:20 of the video, the light sources captured in the Iphone4 is a bit distracting (not sure whats the proper term for that.). I find it annoying.
Also +1 to SGS2's natural capture and Iphone 4's vibrant colors. I prefer the SGS2's video, specially on the initial part of the video where they are capturing/filming the sky.

The fact that he says so on a forum should be enough to prove that he is indeed afraid that it's a flaw in the hardware used by samsung. I don't need more proof.
Edit : Also, experience has told me not to count on software upgrades to correct flows (for example with the glitchy touchscreen on my Nexus One)

Also if you flow problem I suggest a visit to the urologist.

English is not my first language (hence my "flow" problems ), and I thought I'm "afraid" meant that you didn't know something for sure but thought it might be the case and that it would be a bad thing (= I fear). But after doing some research it seems like "I'm afraid" actually means "I'm sorry" in this case.
So just forget about my previous post ^^
PS : My SGS2 should arrive on Monday, and I'm pretty sure I'll like it even if the autofocus is not that great =)

Having owned an iphone 4 and now a gs2 i can say with all honesty the image quality ,video and browser look so much better on the iphone 4. But you have to realize this is only because of the resolution of the iphone screen. galaxy s 2 is a great phone but it is not in the same class as the iphone 4, gs3 will be because it will move up to 300dpi.

UltraPixel camera is really the best one?

Actually, the important factor of I am attracted by the HTC One is its UltraPixel, I have read the technology description on HTC's website, and I just wonder if it really performs better than the typical smartphone with just 4MP camera.

In my eyes, it doesn't. It does well and certain lighting conditions i do have to say but for most of the shots ive seen like the iphone vs. HTC One camera, the iPhone did better in nearly all of them to me. Once people get the non-demo models though we'll be able to see what others think.

To get some idea of how well the camera on any phone performs in different lighting hastag its name on Instagram
I personally am jealous of the camera on the iphone 4s/5. They seem to produce the sharpest pictures on Instagram and Facebook!
We can't tell yet the device software is not final and HTC didn't lift the reviews embargo yet and the didn't post many official samples either
Normally, I would like to see dpreview's comments for any camera reviews. gsmarena's camera section is also decent.
I think the argument is unless you're wanting to print photos on huge canvases etc then 4mp is more then enough for Facebook etc that most people use their camera phones for. And if you can develop a 4mp camera that is high quality with low light performance you're basically giving the majority what they want and need.
As a photo enthusiast I am glad to see them trying to get closer to what's necessary and needed rather then having a medium quality high pixel camera that I'll never use for top notch shots. I have a DSLR for that.

From a lot of comparisons I saw, there's no doubt that the best available mobile camera is Nokia 920 but hey, it's a windows phone.
Recently Sony released a Firefox OS ROM for some xperia phones. If Nokia decided to do the same releasing an oficial android ROM for Lumia series I could think about buying one but, that's not the case.
And about HTC One camera, maybe it's not the best but it's great enough for me.

When Maemo was in the transition of replacing symbian as nokia's primary OS they suddenly appointed a new CEO which came from Microsoft. And few months after they decided to ditch support for maemo & meego and decided to partner with windows. So most likely the reason why they went windows and not android is because microsoft infiltrated their administratiion. It all started with Stephen Elop.
How about Apple releasing iOS version for Lumia 820 and 920? Hahahha Nokia and android too much optimistic thought but let Nokia fall down again I think Nokia is under Microsoft's debt and ms is hypnotised Nokia to save their reputation in mobile world, Nokia will show their true color when his debt from Microsoft has finish atm Nokia don't want to angry Microsoft coz ms has been heavily feeded Nokia to make him healthy

I think it's a perfectly good OS, my sister has it. Very fast and fluid for what its a cheap phone.
I think they went with WP as they will be the manufacturer associated with it. Think iOS, think Apple (obviously) but for Android most people will automatically think Samsung.
I'd like to reiterate again, that demo units and preview units with unfinalized software have NEVER made a difference (for any phone) in the final quality of the camera. It'll be released in a few weeks. If it's **** now, it will still be **** later on. No more excuses. Optimism is no excuse for stupidity.
Here's one big problem with the HTC One. The 4MP is 4MP. You can go on and on about how it doesn't matter for facebook, but if we are going to place smartphone cameras to a higher standard (HTC says so), this compromise is almost dealbreaking. It's one step forward, two steps back. I take pictures of menus and sheets of paper and murals and such with text quite frequently. Even my Galaxy S2 with 8MP is sharper and easier to read than the blurry and poorly defined text the HTC One takes. Here's a text comparison.
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one-review-902p6.php
That's what you sacrifice with low resolution. Resolved detail. The text images are just the easiest way to see the problem with low resolution. It extends far beyond just text, Blurry faces, undefined outlines, and blur in general.
The other problem. The touted low light performance seems to be overblown. If you sacrifice megapixels for better low light, and the low light doesn't deliver, you just shot yourself in the foot. Here's a comparison in low light with the Nokia 920 and 720.
http://www.phonearena.com/news/HTC-One-vs-Nokia-Lumia-920-and-720-low-light-comparison-video_id40344
You can see the giant ass blotches of noise and grain, because the HTC image blows up the lighting and makes the noise and grain even more apparent. There's no fine detail, just a smear of color. Compared to the Lumia 920, it's almost like it has no OIS at all and the "ultrapixels" mean diddly squat. Most damning of all, is that the budget Lumia 720 takes better low light pictures. It doesn't have fancy OIS nor the same large pixels.
There are many more examples of the poor low light performance scattered about the net. This is the thing HTC touted as better than the rest, but so far its just middling if not mediocre.
In summation. If you want an average camera, or say "I don't give a shiz it's a camera-phone", this phone will fit the bill. But if you were expecting something more, some sort of major progress, you won't find it here. You will be better off with the Lumia 920 and its OIS. Or wait for the Lumia 1000 EOS which will even give point and shoot cameras a run for their money. But right now this is just a half-hearted attempt by HTC, with plenty of money thrown at advertising it but no confidence in making it a reality wit a bigger sensor, more pixels, better OIS, etc. The Galaxy IV will probably have a better camera. Hell, the Galaxy II and III have better cameras.

I looked through all the demo pictures and the ones taken by reviewers at MWC and the pictures where on par or better than the competition.
As for that GSM arena review, they describe the quality as being sharper and better overall than the LG G but then have photos that are blurry and say it is the One pictures but they don't match the full size pictures at the bottom of their review so I don't quite trust that source.
Honestly, if you want to take great pictures buy a point and shoot camera or a DSLR as nothing in a phone is going to out match them.

2. GSMArena always gets devices early, it's been like this for years.
3. The S4 is not zoomed in, the HTC One has a wider lens, hence you see more.
4. The HTC One has OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), the S4 has only Digital Image Stabilization at best. That's something that also makes a big difference.
These are all facts. In video, the One wins. But photo's will surely look sharper on the S4."
They think it's fake & that the S4 is zoomed in... lol. :") The video on the One looks good, but it's more fun to see the S4 fans cry lol. And they should, at least based on this comparison.

I find these camera reviews to be so subjective, I've seen the GS4 video on other sites and it looks better than the HTC One. Also the GS4 image stabilization was never that bad, maybe they have it turned off or something and have weird settings. You could tell they were moving the GS4 faster than the HTC One as well...
Like I said these comparisons are bull****.

Didn't Samsung say it had Image Stabilization? I thought I've seen this in several reports too, what's weird is they've said on that site that the GS4 has better low light performance and yet many other sites say otherwise.
I think it's all rather subjective atm to how people set up the settings, I mean if they were both on default it could explain why as my 808 by default has image stabilization off and produces horrible low light pictures and is only 5MP......
It's no good have stuff on default settings, you need to set the camera up to the situation and produce the best pictures the phone allows you.
I'm not buying either of these phones, I'm more inclined to go the HTC One cause it looks nicer, that said I'm not impressed by either of them.
Yeh in fact on the GS4's list of specs for the Camera...
Primary 13 MP, 4128 x 3096 pixels, autofocus, LED flash
Features Dual Shot, Simultaneous HD video and image recording, geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, image stabilization, HDR

Yeah but the quality of that looks strange. My S III and Note II both had much better quality than that so I will not give the victory to the One just based on that When I get mine in my hands I will decide myself

The pictures are poor. You're gonna have some good, some bad, but overall the camera is poor. Especially when zooming at all.
The camera app itself is snappy and it'll focus fast, but this ultra pixel with 4mp just isn't gonna get it. There is 2 year old technology cranking out better, more consistent pictures.

He's been bashing the M8 all day. Camera is decent just not enough megapixels for his liking.
Tell me that the photos from Engadget are fake!
They look horrible
Ive seen a couple short hands on reviews that say the M8 pics are no better than the M7. The only thing the M8 has going for it in the camera department is speed and that new refocusing feature....which one reviewer said doesnt really work that well. Hmmm

Yeah, um, those Flickr photos look more than acceptable for me. I don't need the best camera if I'm getting the best screen, audio quality, and experience that the M8 will surely offer as the M7 did. The camera is literally secondary (or, well, further than that) than all of those areas and, even then, it's not really bad at all.

NO.
NOT ENOUGH MEGAPIXELS.

In all seriousness, when it comes down to cutting costs on a smartphone design, camera would be the first thing on my list too. Would you rather it be made of cheap plastic, not have front facing speakers or have a smaller battery?
I'd take superior hardware/build over a great camera any day. I know we want it all, but it seems like we just can't have it all. At least not til the M9.

IMAG0065 that night time pic...looks really really really bad. but for the most part its not bad. Matter of fact all the night time ones are really bad towards the end .
In complete and utter seriousness guys (not being a fanboy either) I was MORE than pleased with the camera on the M7. That was my primary concern that I debated over for months before getting the M7 - giving up my iPhone 5 which took awesome pics was a difficult choice. Hands down, I'm more than excited to get back to Android (had to go back to my iPhone 5 due to selling my M7). The true wide angle 16:9 is so awesome and the pics were great. Overall, I felt like I was able to regularly capture more accurate color representations with the M7. Low light was pretty great too.
I will say, there were a few times where I was left wishing I could crop to a larger size and retain image quality. However, for me personally, it wasn't a big enough issue for me to ditch the phone, as I don't need to do that often enough. If you're someone who is perpetually cropping, this probably isn't going to work for you.
Also, I used to have an album of pics I took on my phone to show people when they'd play with it. I received soooo many compliments on the pics I took and more people saying "This phone has such an amazing camera" never knowing it was only 1/2 the MP's as their phones.
I understand and agree with the major drawbacks of it, however, as an overall quick shooter to the ability to take your time and change settings to get an optimal pic, it blew me away quite a few times. That's more than I could ever say about my iPhone.
Addition: there was a thread I saw with M7 vs. M8 photos and the colors looked quite a bit better and more crisp on the M8. I'm excited to see what I can do with it.
although the MP is disappointing, the strengths of the phone outweigh a blunder such as that I think. It's not like the camera is crap, it's just average for current times. We just had higher expectations as we should have especially compared to last year's. I would say the camera is "adequate"

Thanks! Much better indeed. These are more than acceptable for my use.
The MKBHD first impression video of the camera shows off it's strengths and weaknesses.

im not sure about anyone else but i really dont take many pics at night or in low light. so the camera is fine for me. i will have it on thursday so i'll find out how well it works for me soon

Is it me or does the nexus 6 have a better camera than the i-phone 6+

judge for yourselves
as much of a supporter I am of android... iphones tend to have amazing cameras. ill watch the video later when i get home but its hard to judge IQ from a video.
It's really hard to say without knowing how the camera was set up on each phone. (They were at different resolutions, so what else is different?) However, assuming everything but the resolution is the same (a big assumption), and judging from the side-by-side video, it seemed to me that the iPhone tended to oversaturate a bit. This worked well in lower light (or backlit) conditions, but once in a well lit condition, it looked washed out. Also, the white balance looked way off on the iPhone.
It just generally looked "off" enough that I'm highly suspecting that the camera settings were different. For example, the grain and flower pictures looked like a fill flash was used on the N6, but not with the iPhone.

It's you..... the new iphone 6 is the highest rated ever on a camera phone by dxomark. The sensor on the Nexus is still the crappy old 1/3" sensor. The iphone 6 has a 1/2.66 sensor. You can still get a good image on the nexus, but it's not the same. MP = nothing really ( since most camera phones are over 10mp anyway ). Sensor size and f stop mean everything... ( along with good software to run it all ).
Without some sort of reference, those images mean nothing really in the video. For instance the nexus images looked washed out. However, without being there to see the true colors, Its impossible to tell.
I hate iphones, but you have to give apple this one.

The iPhone 6 still uses a 1/3 sensor if I'm not mistaken.
what did dxomark say about the nexus 6? i cant find anything about it.
i am just saying when the video first came up i thought to myself "that must be the iphone on the left" because to me the video on the left looked far superior.then the labels came up and the nexus was on the left. i was shocked.i know we all have personal preferences, i thought and still think, the nexus outperformed the apple product in these examples.
i am just happy that google took the camera seriously this time around.
maybe apple has a better camera ...i dont know ,but in this video i would have picked the nexus to be superior.
thanks
This is that weird video again. There's something suspicious about it. First off, Nexus 6 doesn't have 60 fps... This isn't right...

I would take this video with a pinch of salt... Seems fishy to me.

You have to be some major sheep if you can't accept that Iphones do have their ups. Same as rkennison, I dislike Iphones and I'm a fan of android, but I don't conform to all this fanboy BS. Just because you're a fan of one, doesn't mean you have to pretend the other is absolute sh*t. Android is especially lacking on the camera software side.

Your attitude is an example of why sometimes I hate the android community. You already assumed he's a fanboy and all that because he sided with an iPhone. He is stating facts, I have used the iPhones 1st gen to the 4s and after that android till today and its clear that one feature that iPhones are very strong at is the camera. Anyways, I am just glad the Nexus 6 has a comparable camera to higher tier phones, because I've used the GN, N4 and N5 and the camera on those were just crap. Can't wait to get my hands on the N6 and will be comparing it to my bros iPhone 6 Plus for a raw comparison.

I also didnt say it was bs or sh1t or anything else but i have seen note 4 cam beat iphone and from my point of view even g3 beats it in most situations ... iphones have their place in the market for kids that want to buy and be just like their friends and go along with everyone else and peoples parents who cant really understand how to work a android ....its just simple and its not for everyone .... that is the beauty of it ..i dont have to buy it because i dont want to ...just like all these people complaining about size and price of nexus 6 ... you don't have to buy it . I have had note 2 , 3, and 4 g2 and g3 wife has a iPhone 6 for work... i look at devices and check off boxes the ones that i can check off most i will get ....i won't even look at phones under 5.5 so that always narrows it down. Then i look at specs i have had many smart phones going back to treo 600 650 750 palm pre evo galaxy s2 s3 ...its wonderful to have your pick and not have to worry what others think .....
Actually I believe Note 4 was rated higher than iphone 6+. The colors were washed out on the 6+ in that video not the other way around. The problem here is that some people don't actually know much about photography and yet they still come on here and make random statements. MP means nothing anymore, but when you're down as low as 8mp in a phone it actually does. Usually poeple blow up photos more often taken with phones and this poses more issues when it is a low resolution. Face book, instagram and many other social media sites have created a place for people to post pictures and the need for editing. This blowing up of a photo to post as your profile picture or to crop someone else out leads to pixelated photos from iphones everywhere.
