[Q] Sprint->Google Voice->Tmobile move order? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I currently have an HTC EVO on Sprint. I've ordered a Nexus 4 and plan to move over to T-Mobile, probably the $50/month plan. I want my existing number to still be the one everybody calls and is called by. My understanding is that if my existing number is ported to GV and my new phone has its own different number, as long as everyone calls the GV number, it will forward to the Tmobile phone transparently and calls from Nexus4 on Tmobile will appear as coming from the number which was ported to GV right? I don't want to give out anything new to anybody.
So, do I need to port my existing Sprint phone to GV first and then next week move over to Tmobile with that GV number? Or should I port my number to Tmobile first, and then GV?

You could port the number to gv and then give out that number to people. That's what I've been doing for a couple of years now.

Doing the same thing but I have Galaxy Nexus.

ok, but I don't want to "give out a new number" to anyone. If I port to GV, my existing number becomes my GV number, and everybody calling me on that number is going thru GV right? Then once that is done, move to Tmo, whereby they will give the phone its own number and I just tell it to forward to GV so that no one know the number of the Tmo system, just the existing old number which is now being handled by GV, right? Or am I misunderstanding the situation?

Just gonna post this screenshot here..

That's what I said. Port your number to gv. Get the new one from tmo. Forward to the old number on gv. It'll be as if nothing happened.

I was going to do exactly what you are planning on doing using gv. The problem is that gv doesn't support picture messages (MMS). For this reason I just ported my number from Sprint to T-Mobile.

To the OP - yes you've got it right, and it's works out pretty well if you do it right... see below.

Did you have integration enabled during the porting? Cause I receive MMS regularly through Gmail from Google Voice even though I use Tmobile, I just can't send them.
I used to have Sprint and GV each with their own #s, but they were "integrated" when that option became available with Sprint #s. But, I only used my GV # even though I couldn't get MMS. Then they activated inbound MMS via Gmail, for Sprint customers like a year after they started offering integration, and all was right with the world...
A year so later, when I went T-mob and a Galaxy Nexus, I didn't port cause I had my GV # before my Sprint #. So I Got my new Tmo # and added it to my GV account but didn't delete the Sprint # or integration from my GV account, because I didn't turn off my Sprint account for another month.
In that month of having all three #s I wanted to make sure I received all my messages to my old sprint # - they're weren't a lot going there since I used GV pretty much exclusively, but some contacts didn't get what GV was all about and managed to get my Sprint # along the way.
So I changed my GV settings to have it forward all SMS messages to the Gmail account associated with my GV account. To my surprise even after my Sprint service was deactivated, I have continued to receive MMS messages to my GV # via Gmail. See attachments for proof
I'm pretty sure if you do the integration, then port and make the settings changes I did and have it forward SMS to your email, inbound MMS will stick when you port - not a guarantee since you're porting, but it's still working for me.

If your current Sprint number is the number you want everyone to continue to call you at and you want to answer those calls on your soon to be N4 on T-Mobile, why aren't you just porting the number from Sprint to T-Mobile? Why complicate it with Google Voice and why have this extra number you are not going to use that is tied directly to your mobile phone?

Google Voice lets you make phone calls over the Internet. It also allows you to use visual voicemail, which is a program that attempts to turn voice into text for voicemail messages. It's not very good, as a lot of converted messages do not make sense. But it's something, I guess. I think it's best use is for people that do not have a landline and have poor cell reception in their homes. Not sure how much use it will be on a mobile device.
Google voice is soooooo much more than that. It allows call forwarding to other phones, number blocking, call screening, ability to listen to and store voice mail online, and more. It also allows calling over a data network. You can text message, for free, with google voice.
This is a pretty nice feature in fact. Its going to really add something nice to the table.

You're right. I overlooked many features. I think it's because I have an unlimited text, voice and data plan, so those things were never of any interest to me personally. I never even thought of some of those features in my initial comment because they are so far from what I use.

Simply put...
GV = VOIP
GV + SipDroid = FTW
It also means cheap international calls to landlines.
I may be missing something here, but why is it that good that you can text for free with this when you have to have the huge plan that includes unlimited text just to have this phone on sprints network. Just wondering.

How does this impact Any mobile anytime? This was the reason I was hesitant to use GV on sprint...that it read incoming calls to my gv number as coming from a land line.

The unlimited texting may not be a draw for some, but the nice thing is that it gives you just 1 number and you can receive the texts on any device you have. You can even log into your google account onthe web and receive and send the texts there and it will all show up from a single number.

ditch verizon for nexus with straight talk?

Im thinking about ditching Verizon and paying the $350 bucks! but i can probably make that back from selling my S3. But what are your guys thoughts about getting a nexus 4 with straight talk? has anyone used Straight Talk and is it really worth it or is it one of those deals that are either "too good to be true" or "you get what you pay for"? cause just buy switching even if i dont sell my s3 ill still be saving $500 a year. Also whats the speed difference between hspa+ and 4g lte?

I don't have experience with Straight Talk, but that's what I plan on doing with my N4 except I'm gonna try T Mobile prepaid instead. If I don't like it, I'll switch to Straight Talk AT&T. I have $200 to pay for my EFT from AT&T.

Did you port over your number? If so was it pretty easy. I don't know anything about gsm phones I've been on Verizon for about 7years. do you just but the phone pop in the straight talk sim and activate like you would on Verizon?

Got 2 more questions if you forget to add more time to your account will you automatically loss your phone number and have to get a new one? Also if you decide to switch back to a carrier can you port your number back? I've been told that you can't port a number if you have a pre pay phone back to a carrier like Verizon or att.

The Galaxy Nexus was my first GSM phone, & I was with Sprint for over 10 years (my first cellphone was a Motorola Timeport).
I ported my number to Straight Talk, & it was simple*. My number was ported in about 24 hours, but it took about 48 hours to be 100% complete. During the process, I received a text message from at&t (I ordered an at&t compatible SIM card). I could make calls, but not receive any, & my friends couldn't receive the texts I sent. But after the second day, everything was ok. The phone showed 'no signal', for the first few hours (I started to think that my phone or SIM was defective).
Porting your number to Straight Talk effectively activates your SIM card with your old number. Just make sure you set your APN :Settings > Wireless & Networks > More > Mobile networks > Access Point Names (I left the "Proxy" empty)
*I was scared that I might lose my Sprint number to Straight Talk, so I ported it to Google Voice. Then I ported a custom number from another Google Voice account to Straight Talk.

1. I'm not sure, you'll have to ask customer service. But I read somewhere that they'll give you a day or two to add time to your account. They'll send you text reminders two weeks before your service ends).
2. This seems odd, you should just ask Verizon if they can port a number out from a pre-paid carrier (or just port to google voice).
I had one problem with Straight Talk: I couldn't see my service end date on their website, or add time. I called customer service and they deactivated & reactivated my account, fixing the issue. The call was pretty painless.
Hey OP. Take a look at this thread from the Galaxy Nexus forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455014

Can the Nexus 7 32GB HSPA+ be used as a phone?

Hey all,
Sorry if this was asked before (I did look around) but will it be possible to use the upcoming 32GB Nexus 7 HSPA+ as a phone? I know the phone.apk won't be there but with some custom rom can it be possible?
I was considering this as an option over getting a nexus 4.

I have same question as OP, and this is not a solution! I want to use the Nexus7 AS MY PHONE! With a voice/data SIM/plan. Since I use T-Mobile PREPAID, it is not possible to even forward my mobile voice #. So, basically, need a phone.apk or equivalent. Why wouldn't they do this? The phone has all the radios & supports all the bands for cellular communication. So, why can't I use it as my phone!?!?

It is NOT a solution. Maybe it's a solution for YOU.
I DO have a Google Voice number. I do NOT want to port my mobile # to Google.
I TRAVEL INTERNATIONALLY. I want to be able to pop a local SIM card in from countries around the world with a prepaid voice/data plan, and use the Nexus 7 for PHONE & Internet access. This CAN NOT BE DONE with Google Voice.
Furthermore, Google Voice is not entirely reliable. There are times I use it to place a call, and it calls a completely different number! If you are in an area where there is a cell signal, but no data (= some rural areas / very weak signal), Google Voice does not work, because a data connection is required to send the data about the call to Google. And with this "quasi-solution", if there is no data connection, there is no phone at all as all the calls are converted to Internet data/VOIP.
Then don't buy the damn thing and stop crying about it Jesus ****

Tone down the all caps. Google is responsible for the absence of phone abilities on this tablet, not the forum members or devs here. If you need it to make phone calls through the SIM, get something else. Maybe a Padfone.
Also - T-Mobile blocks the Nexus 7 from working with SIM cards registered on voice plans. So don't say you weren't warned.

Straight Talk sim activation for nexus 4

Hello everyone,
I am coming from Sprint and am waiting for my nexus 4 to arrive. I have to leave sprint by 6 December or I will be fined $350 dollars. My 16GB is backordered and I am not confident I will meet that deadline. In order to leave sprint I need to port my number top straight talk. Since I am new to straight talk I was wondering if I could port my number to the straight talk sim without actually having my phone yet? I am just trying to ensure I am not screwed if Google fails to deliver by within the 3 week period thanks everyone!

Porting is done via the ST website, you don't actually need a device at all, just the serial# of the (micro) SIM card.
I can confirm this works as well. It's pretty slick and you'll love Straight Talk.

i was suprised when the porting took like minutes maybe cause i was with tmobile.. go ahead it will work
I have ST using an ATT compatible sim. If I had to do it again I'd port my number to Google Voice and order a TMobile compatible sim for the faster speeds. If you port your number to GV you will never have to worry about "porting" again and you can try different prepaid carriers.

I second this advice. Porting to Google voice will cost you $20 but it's worth every penny. You won't have to port again and you can switch plans effortlessly by just forwarding to your new carrier number from Google voice.

I was looking into this option a few weeks ago. I was concerned with the number availability when I am deployed. Can you access Google voice in the Middle East? The only other feedback I notice for Google voice was that the messaging and vvm can get screwed up. Have any of you had this issue? Will I be able to program the phone to use the stock mma application for messaging or am I going to get stuck with the poorly developed Google voice application? Finally will Google voice use data or actual carrier minutes? I want to make sure I can get calls inside my work where I have phone signal but weak data.
Thanks for all the help. You all are awesome.
I have done some more research and found most of my answers besides the Google voice overseas. I think I am going to skip Google voice for the straight talk port... However if I need to change again I will consider it again. I just want to have a simplified experience with texting that Google voice can not offer.

I just did tonight an etf with Sprint and have till 1/7/13 to port the number out. My nexus 4 won't be here for another 6-7 weeks but have an old flip phone reactivated with AT&T for $25 prepaid at their store, not the same as the straight talk plan since the phone has no data plan. Just ordered tonight a Tmobile straight talk SIM card. I was told at Walmart that the AT&T SIM card I got at the AT&T store won't work w straight talk and needed to order a straight talk AT&T SIM card from Walmart.com.
1-Is that correct information regarding needing a straight talk specific AT&T SIM card?
2- Do I port now my sprint number before I even have the phone and before 1/7/13 to google voice since I am going to try Tmobile and AT&T straight talk plans?
3-Do I pay $20 to port my number to google voice and then add the AT&T and Tmobile numbers to the google voice account?
4- Can I port to google voice without having an active phone?

I have not checked if Google Voice is accessible from foreign IPs, but if not, a VPN would be your best bet (if allowed obviously).
Porting my number to Google Voice has been absolutely worth it. However, it isn't for everyone, like Uh60m Pilot. You can have SMS forwarded to your cell number, and consequently be able to reply from your native sms app (or one of your choosing), but it will be a GV shortcode, not the other person's actual number. It's been a long time since I've done any research, but I remember coming across some sort of app that promises seamless integration. I just did a search and believe it was https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mdrtools.apps.gvintegration&hl=en
I haven't tried it personally so I can't vouch for it.
Of course, it's worth mentioning that GV does not have full support for MMS yet. I've been finding that I can get MMS from certain carriers (at least Sprint but not VZW or TMO last I checked), but they are sent to email instead of the GV app. No MMS sending though.
That said, being able to bang out SMS from the website while on the computer is extremely handy.
Mr Ian B, I don't understand how you paid your ETF yet still have time to port out your number? The convention is that the number is gone as soon as you close the account. You can port it whereever you want.. I believe you can switch between ST att/tmo by just calling in, but I'm just repeating what I read on the forums at one point. You may want to verify that.
As for porting to GV, that is up to you. Do know that they only accept ports from the major carriers-- VZW, ATT, TMO, Sprint. So if you're set on porting to GV and still have service with Sprint, that may be the easiest way.
Otherwise, you'd be looking at activating a TMO prepaid account ($0.99 per sim activation kit, limit 2 per order-- comes with $3.34 which is more than enough for you to port in and out), porting your number in, and then porting it out to GV ($20).
Since you are looking at ST, you aren't going to be worried about minutes, so it's really up to you if you want to port to GV..
edit: just realized there's a free version of GV SMS Integration: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...vintegration.free&feature=more_from_developer
may give it a shot myself..

Thanks for info Ziddey. I requested the etf tonight and I have till the end of my current billing cycle on 1/7/13 to port the number out. They will send me a bill in February for the etf. I am currently on Sprint and my Sprint number is my google voice number based on some agreement between them. I just want to port my 13 year old number somewhere and not lose it. I don't want to give out a new number to all my 200+ contacts. Does ST charge to port numbers in and out?
Tia,

No, porting is generally free. Sprint has some sort of integration with GV, which may explain why I can receive MMS from Sprint users. The $20 porting fee only applies to GV.

google voice and straighttalk ATT

This is not Nexus 4 specific, but I think there are others whose purchase of this phone is their first venture into the world of prepaid cellular plans. Here is my experience.
My previous phone was a Nexus S4G, rooted, etc. I was with Sprint for many years on a 450 minutes/5G data plan. The data speeds weren't that great, but I wasn't attempting torrent downloads either. I tethered occasionally, and it was never a problem. The very few times I called CS were handled quickly and professionally.
On my new Nexus 4, I initially got the $30 T-Mobile plan. The speeds were quite good in downtown San Francisco, though the signal gets weak even in the bowels of the bar at the Drake hotel (Union square, tourist magnet, ground floor). When you get coverage, this is a very good option. Unfortunately, TM has a small groundprint. I live in a touristy area in coastal central California, and even a mile off the hotspots there is no coverage (no voice, not just no data).
So I got the Straight Talk ATT sim today. I use my Google Voice as my primary number, and forward calls to my new ST number. I also want to use Google Voicemail as my sole VM client. But, I find out that ST picks up before GM, *and* it is not possible to turn off ST voicemail.
I tried calling ST, but gave up after 60 minutes on hold.
I am almost ready to go back to post-paid, but some part of me screams at the unfairness of buying a 2 year contract after paying full price for an unlocked phone.
Question: Is there a way to disable StraightTalk Voicemail?
Rant over.
Just use the conditional forwarding GSM code for ATT. It works for me.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my op. I don't want to have my ST number call-forward to Google Voice. I have my GV number as my primary contact and it call forwards to ST. I want GV to pick up Voicemail, but right now my ST number does so.
During my brief interlude with T-Mobile pprepaid,my solution was to call TM and ask them to disable voicemail. However, Straight Talk apparently does not have that option. As I said,I called their customer service number, but no one answered after one hour on hold.
Thank you

Can I get the actual link to that webpage? Goo.GL is blocked for me in Afghanistan.

If you need something of Straight talk your best option is to go to their Facebook page and post on there...they will give you a link that has to be opened from a computer or laptop....once there you can click toward top right something about submit a ticket....can't remember exactly....also you can private message the st person who posted the ticket post on fb.....weird I know but it works well....
