Google Voice lets you make phone calls over the Internet. It also allows you to use visual voicemail, which is a program that attempts to turn voice into text for voicemail messages. It's not very good, as a lot of converted messages do not make sense. But it's something, I guess. I think it's best use is for people that do not have a landline and have poor cell reception in their homes. Not sure how much use it will be on a mobile device.

Google voice is soooooo much more than that. It allows call forwarding to other phones, number blocking, call screening, ability to listen to and store voice mail online, and more. It also allows calling over a data network. You can text message, for free, with google voice.
This is a pretty nice feature in fact. Its going to really add something nice to the table.
Sent from my Samsung-SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

You're right. I overlooked many features. I think it's because I have an unlimited text, voice and data plan, so those things were never of any interest to me personally. I never even thought of some of those features in my initial comment because they are so far from what I use.

Simply put...
GV = VOIP
GV + SipDroid = FTW

It also means cheap international calls to landlines.

I may be missing something here, but why is it that good that you can text for free with this when you have to have the huge plan that includes unlimited text just to have this phone on sprints network. Just wondering.

Any mobile anytime?
How does this impact Any mobile anytime? This was the reason I was hesitant to use GV on sprint...that it read incoming calls to my gv number as coming from a land line.

The unlimited texting may not be a draw for some, but the nice thing is that it gives you just 1 number and you can receive the texts on any device you have. You can even log into your google account onthe web and receive and send the texts there and it will all show up from a single number.

you missed the point. those who use google voice were using their regular minutes because google voice numbers are landline numbers. even if you were calling a mobile phone through google voice, you would still be using minutes because in order to initiate the call, sprint would have to call your landline google voice number, thus costing you minutes.
Currently you use your minutes if you use google voice. The unlimited is for mobile to mobile using your cell phone. Franky this is the reason I don't bother with google voice. When this gets sorted it will be a good reason to switch to google voice.
It really looks like sprint is solidifying their relationship with google.

It's credible. I wrote that article. (Saw the inbound link so came over here.)
The person I spoke with was a Product Development Manager for Sprint who is working on the Google Voice integration efforts. I ran into him at CTIA Wireless 2011 in Orlando at the Sprint Press Event area.
I didn't publish his name because I was not sure if their PR folks would be okay with it.

Calling BS until screenshots are provided.
Isn't Google voice VOIP? So it would use data (no user voice minutes). The caveat would be if you are calling another Sprint user, and the incoming call from Google voice would be from a LAN line, so mobile to mobile minutes wouldn't work - the recipient would use their minutes because it would be a land line to mobile minutes. But if both parties were using Google voice, then no voice minutes, only data.

F*ck sprint! :/

Okay so apparently my number is ineligible for Sprint Google Voice Integration due to my number being ported over from at&t back in august when i switched from my iPhone 4 to the Epic. WTF?! Why would that even matter?! I get really poor service at my house due to me living in a very hilly area so this results in me not getting texts and calls at times. Text messages are delayed most of the time I am at home and at times when i am in a poor coverage area. I was looking forward to this integration cause I would be getting all my texts thru GV and wouldnt have to worry about this. But now that isnt happening idk what to do
That's bull. You should call customer service and elevate to the supervisor if they don't help
If you're rooted you can download an app called Roam Control which will allow you to manually switch over to Verizon's towers. In fact I'm using it at my mom's house right now. Great app.

+1 on Roam Control..
All you do is boot it first time with an ok 3g signal, it asks you to select mfg (sammy) then it just has 3 buttons: Automatic ( like normal ) Home Only, and Roam only... works AWESOME. Yeah call about that # issue though... probly just got a 'special' sprint employee... also, you can tell them about your reception and ask for an airrave, it uses your home internet and acts as a 3g tower... kinda lame to piggyback you internet, but to get service it works. They will try to make you buy the device and pay a monthly, tell them you read everywhere that they give them away for free if you are in a crap coverage area. Only (other) catch is that sprint thinks it makes sense to treat the airrave as another phone on your line, so you need the credit to add another 'line' to your account, even if the prorate the charge. Good luck!
Oh, and SMS and MMS have been having issues... check the general section for more threads...
Its real simple. First time you open it go to Options tab and select it to work for the Epic and check the box that says Close After Selection. Then go back to the Main tab.If you want to be on Verizon click the Roam button and to go back on Sprint click the Home option.
Brilliant! I can actually get service in my basement now!
Umm, where/who is telling you that your number isn't ok for GV? Is it on google's voice site when you try and port it? If so, that has nothing to do with Sprint.
Or...you can talk with Sprint and have them send you an ARAIVE.

There is a lock-in period for ported numbers, I can't remember how long it is, because it varies from country to country.

I don't understand what is so important about integrating the number. I tried it and think it's not for me. I'm guessing by reading the posts that you want to use your sprint number as your google voice number? What is the important features you want from it? I personally thought that it wasn't much different from having google voice app, gv number and conditional call forwarding.
Well to answer my question and maybe the OP. I just got off the phone with Sprint, and their answer was simple; because of how the way my account is set up, I receive a discount via my work, this prevents me from integration.

is it free to call skype - skype when using phone?

So when using our phones to call skype or receiving calls, do you get charged or not?
Skype to skype is free.
thanks, i just don't want to find out in the end that t-mobile is charging me for it.
I don't see how they could unless you're using excessive data. That being said, I'm on o2 in the UK, so maybe it's different here. When I had an iPhone on AT&T in the US, it simply wouldn't let me make user to user calls over 3g. Add that the list of reasons I switched to android.
One major gripe about the skype app btw--and a reason NOT to pay for premium features--is that you can't send sms from user to phone number from the app. It's just not a feature for some reason (though it can be done on the iPhone for some reason).
Anyway, if T-mo were going to charge you, you'd receive a carrier warning prompt first in all likelihood.
but tmobile don't charge if you use excessive data so no problem at all. Damn, I love Skype, free calls only problem is the android app is a mess.

Can the Nexus 7 32GB HSPA+ be used as a phone?

Hey all,
Sorry if this was asked before (I did look around) but will it be possible to use the upcoming 32GB Nexus 7 HSPA+ as a phone? I know the phone.apk won't be there but with some custom rom can it be possible?
I was considering this as an option over getting a nexus 4.
Thanks in advance,

I have same question as OP, and this is not a solution! I want to use the Nexus7 AS MY PHONE! With a voice/data SIM/plan. Since I use T-Mobile PREPAID, it is not possible to even forward my mobile voice #. So, basically, need a phone.apk or equivalent. Why wouldn't they do this? The phone has all the radios & supports all the bands for cellular communication. So, why can't I use it as my phone!?!?

It is NOT a solution. Maybe it's a solution for YOU.
I DO have a Google Voice number. I do NOT want to port my mobile # to Google.
I TRAVEL INTERNATIONALLY. I want to be able to pop a local SIM card in from countries around the world with a prepaid voice/data plan, and use the Nexus 7 for PHONE & Internet access. This CAN NOT BE DONE with Google Voice.
Furthermore, Google Voice is not entirely reliable. There are times I use it to place a call, and it calls a completely different number! If you are in an area where there is a cell signal, but no data (= some rural areas / very weak signal), Google Voice does not work, because a data connection is required to send the data about the call to Google. And with this "quasi-solution", if there is no data connection, there is no phone at all as all the calls are converted to Internet data/VOIP.
Then don't buy the damn thing and stop crying about it Jesus ****

Tone down the all caps. Google is responsible for the absence of phone abilities on this tablet, not the forum members or devs here. If you need it to make phone calls through the SIM, get something else. Maybe a Padfone.
Also - T-Mobile blocks the Nexus 7 from working with SIM cards registered on voice plans. So don't say you weren't warned.

google voice and straighttalk ATT

This is not Nexus 4 specific, but I think there are others whose purchase of this phone is their first venture into the world of prepaid cellular plans. Here is my experience.
My previous phone was a Nexus S4G, rooted, etc. I was with Sprint for many years on a 450 minutes/5G data plan. The data speeds weren't that great, but I wasn't attempting torrent downloads either. I tethered occasionally, and it was never a problem. The very few times I called CS were handled quickly and professionally.
On my new Nexus 4, I initially got the $30 T-Mobile plan. The speeds were quite good in downtown San Francisco, though the signal gets weak even in the bowels of the bar at the Drake hotel (Union square, tourist magnet, ground floor). When you get coverage, this is a very good option. Unfortunately, TM has a small groundprint. I live in a touristy area in coastal central California, and even a mile off the hotspots there is no coverage (no voice, not just no data).
So I got the Straight Talk ATT sim today. I use my Google Voice as my primary number, and forward calls to my new ST number. I also want to use Google Voicemail as my sole VM client. But, I find out that ST picks up before GM, *and* it is not possible to turn off ST voicemail.
I tried calling ST, but gave up after 60 minutes on hold.
I am almost ready to go back to post-paid, but some part of me screams at the unfairness of buying a 2 year contract after paying full price for an unlocked phone.
Question: Is there a way to disable StraightTalk Voicemail?
Rant over.
Just use the conditional forwarding GSM code for ATT. It works for me.
Solved here http://goo.gl/6vf9p
Had same problem

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my op. I don't want to have my ST number call-forward to Google Voice. I have my GV number as my primary contact and it call forwards to ST. I want GV to pick up Voicemail, but right now my ST number does so.
During my brief interlude with T-Mobile pprepaid,my solution was to call TM and ask them to disable voicemail. However, Straight Talk apparently does not have that option. As I said,I called their customer service number, but no one answered after one hour on hold.
Thank you
