Anyway to make it so my ringtones go to vibrate @ 11:00am and then come back on @ 7:00Pm?
There's an app for that.

Is there a better text messaging App for the S4? The stock app with the creepy face icons need to go. Plus the general aesthetics are no good.

I gotta say that I find that pretty funny, since that's how all phone operate now. The gestures literally consist of swiping left or swiping right

Yes but access menus or setting or selection options, I'd rather just touch an icon or menu button.
As for GoSMS. I never see any pestering ads. Shrug.

It's not ads per se - it's the notifications "look, we have new premium themes!" "Hey, you can't back up any more but you can use our cloud service!" "please buy into our ecosystem!". If it suits you, it's no big deal - but something that just does SMS/MMS and beats the Samsung/stock product is what I was looking for at this point. Chomp does that.
Not a criticism of their business model, I just didn't like it. I do understand it.
This thread is funny....still love my Handcent over all the rest.

hi guys, when I use a custom ringtone, the ring seems to be cascading. for example, it starts off quietly then randomly blasts the sound full volume. I haven't touched any settings and my ringtones are all standard .mp3 files cropped with ringdroid. when I use the pre-installed ringtones it doesn't do this but it vibrates first and then rings. any tips? thanks.
It's called ascending ringtone... normal stock galaxy behavior. Most custom roms disable it or have the option to disable it. I dont think there is a stock setting to turn it off though cant remember for sure and dint have time to check.

I like the stock app for its pop-over notification, but I hate the screen-on. Is there a way to turn just that piece off?
I am rooted, so I don't know if maybe there is a db value I can flip or a method call I can short-circuit...

I'm assuming I need to be rooted?
Looking for the simple UX, minimal UI and 100% functionality that Quiet Hours (CM10+) or Motorola Assist (4.2+ on MotoX) provide where there are no notifications, no LED, no vibration and only phone calls allowed during set hours. Both seem seem to be integrated at the system level to provide the user with minimal interruption for the set hours.
Not sure if this is as simple as pulling something out of CM/AOSP or looking at the Motorola Assist .apk or what.
I got $20 on this for anyone who can do it. If anyone else is interested, please add your pledge.
Why don't you just get an app like Llama (can be found on the Play Store) and set specific hours or locations, whatever you choose, to enable a silent profile with only calls coming thru. This isn't that difficult... simple free apk called Llama has done this for me every night since ICS.

LOTS of settings in there. Uninstalled.
If you haven't used either "Quiet hours" or Motorola "Assist", the screen shots attached show how easy it can be.
The first picture is of CM/AOSP "Quiet Hours" settings found in Settings>Sounds. As you can see, minimal in settings and it works.
The second/third pictures is of Motorola "Assist" on the MotoX. The third picture is the first screen you are given, where the second screen allows you to pick how calls are handled. Again, minimal and it works.
I appreciate the suggestions, but these two examples of what I would like to see are what I would like to see.
Before I fell in love with Tasker, I used Timeriffic, which has a super easy layout. I've also run CM, so I'm familiar with those settings, but really Timeriffic is more powerful (without being confusing)

The single biggest function I am looking for is something that allows only for calls (whether the first call or second) to come through during set hours 11pm-6am. Timeriffic doesn't recognize my XPosed framework and thinks that my phone and notification volumes are linked, where I have separated them. Unless Timeriffic can recognize this separation, I won't be able to get it to do what I want, which is to have no notifications between 11pm-6am, except for phone calls.

Here, try this. I made a Tasker app that you install and click the icon and it will set the volumes to the presets shown in the screenshot. Lemme know if you need anything changed, or want another app to revert to your normal volume settings. You dont need the actual Tasker app installed to use this, either.

DroidKang?
Use DroidKang ROM. Includes quiet hours a la CM10 ... since it's CM11 essentially.
