Hi there, I currently own an S4 GT-i9505 locked on the EE network (United Kingdom).
I want to root the phone so I can move apps to SD and also install emulators and such. I've also read about flashing the official UK BTU rom..
So I have a few things I'm not too sure about.
Do I need to root the phone to flash the BTU rom? How will it affect my device? What's the easiest way to root for a locked device, as the way I've seen say that you need a factory unlocked device? Sorry for all these questions, I'm just getting confused haha...
And if I root the phone, will I still get OTA updates? I know that it'll probably remove root but can I install them without bricking my phone?
Please help  Thanks

I'm currently using 4.3 android and there's no official 4.4 update yet. What I want to do is upgrade to 4.4.2, then root it. I looked for solutions but they all seem dangerous to me, a beginner.
Cf auto root says that if my bootloader is locked, I risk bricking the device. How do I check if it's locked or not?
How can I backup everything so that IF something goes wrong I can go back to stock?
Where can I get the CORRECT firmware / android version 4.4.2 for the i9505?
My baseband number is XXUEMK9 and the phone is factory unlocked. I basically need to be spoonfed with baby explanations if possible.

Hi there,
4.4 update came out a few days ago.......There are plenty of links around to download and flash via odin....THIS is just one of them.
If you are looking at flashing custom ROMS then root is generally not necessary as most custom ROMS will root your device. Only a custom recovery is needed. Philz and TWRP are the most popular. A search in xda will help you find them.
I encourage you to do ALOT more reading and research before doing anything unfamiliar to your device as only you are responsible for it!!
Hello Guys,
I need clarification on few doubts. I tried searching but was not able to find the correct answers. It would be great If someone could answer it.
1) I use a note3 n9005 in India. It was region unlocked when I bought it. I am planning on rooting it and installing a custom rom. Will the region lock kick in after I root or install the custom rom?
2) If I root the device without tripping the knox, will I get any samsung official OTA updates?
Thank you in advance.:good:
1. If it does, Chainfire has an app for that. RegionLock Away.
2. Not to my knowledge. And you shouldn't want to, either. Best use Odin.

1. No
2. Yes - as long as your system status is official and knox flag is 0
Thank you guys.this battery drain is driving me crazy and I guess only solution is a custom rom. Thank you for the help.

Hi Mike, search the forums before asking any questions. Search google. Don't expect everyone to do your job for you. Post your threads in the right section. This question has been asked and answered a million times and you'd know this if you took 5 minutes to search a little bit.
Here's your answer https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys5/comments/2ubsbs/guide_rooted_android_50_for_the_international/
out of curiosity, why dont you want to trip knox flag
"This question has been asked a million times and you'd know this if you took 5 minutes of your precious time to search a little bit."
Ironic for a man that follows people around *****ing at them to post in Q&A

What model do you have? Find out in phone settings in system / phone info. Sm-g900a has locked bootloader. I think verizon's phone also has a locked bootloader.
The link I gave you shows how to upgrade to lollipop, root it and keep knox 0x0.
Isn't that what you're looking for?

my bad, you did. 900f has an unlocked bootloader. when you upgrade to stock lollipop through OTA or Kies (or odin) it already includes bootloader and modem. When you do it the way described in that reddit link you flash the lollipop firmware, modem and bootloader separately. Apparently that method of updating needs it to be done so.
Honestly I have Knox 0x1 so I never cared for those methods, btw if you live in Germany then there's no need to care about Knox. In EU we're allowed to flash whatever we want and the guarantee stays intact even if you have Knox 0x1
ps. yes =p

Honestly, I don't know. That reddit link I gave you, I haven't read the guide myself. I just skimmed though it to be sure it was real but I don't know the details of it. Yes all G900Fs have an unlocked bootloader. :good:

Do you mean ota stock firmware notification? If yes then you will have it if Knox is still 0x0 if Knox however is 0x1 you will no longer be able to update via ota.
If you want to upgrade from KitKat to lollipop you must wipe data from recovery to avoid any issues. It is also not recommended by me to use titanium backup to restore apps because some might not be compatible with lollipop yet or some of the app data made for KitKat may have a conflict with lollipop system, however lots of apps have compatibility with lollipop and there is a chance you will have no issues at all when using titanium backup. Even if I said I don't recommend restoring data after such a major upgrade I do recommend having a backup whether it's with titanium backup or nandroid etc because you're able to restore apps one by one and make sure that what you restore won't be problematic.
Edit - if you update with flashfire app, there is an option to keep root when flashing from rooted KitKat to lollipop and users have reported that that feature does work for them (I personally haven't tried it).

Here's a version of the method on XDA

hello... sorry before if I ask the same question or there's a thread already talking about this...
I just bought this phone yesterday and unfortunately I got this version 928a...
seems like I cant find any guides for rooting this phone... (or not find hard enough) especially installing the TWRP...
is there anyway to root this phone? android without root its not android at all, thats what I thought...
oh yeah there's this option "OEM Unlock" in my developer option and seems like I can turn it on and off is it mean something?
thx before..
anyone?
You'll probably have more luck in the AT&T S6E+ subforum. I have the same phone and did some reading on rooting. A few of the people in the AT&T forum have root, but most don't. No custom ROMs either. The G928A differs from the International version because it requires untripped Knox to work properly, and rooting will trip Knox. It also requires A version stock firmware (international version firmware won't work). Don't know why it's like this, perhaps custom hardware/hardware drivers/security patches specfic to this model?
So me I'm just planning to upgrade from 5.1 to either 6.0 or 7.0 and call it a day.

I would assume that would be impossible because of a locked bootloader. Again, just assuming it has a locked bootloader. If you live in the States, I would recommend trading it for a G928T (T-Mobile). Unlocked bootloader for sure, and lots of ROMs have support for it.
Hi guys,
so, I rooted my phone after installing Pie, but now among other things I wont be recieving any OTA updates, whats is the simplet way to just update the phone?
From what I read here on XDA I think thats best way is to install via Odin with home_csc but my question is when my phone is rooted will it still have root or it will even boot? Did somebody of you tried this?
I will be very gratefull for any suggestions to this topic.
