[Q] Device Administrator does not allow me to download apps - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently set up my work Exchange ActiveSync account and it required me to activate Device Adminstrator (as it did in my Galaxy Nexus as well). However, on my S4, it immediately disabled all my Google Play apps and would not let me download any updates on new apps.
Apparently there are many more terms and conditions in the S4's device administrator like "disable unknown apps, etc"
Am I the only one facing this problem or are there others?

I guess your connected to your work account ... they might have set this accidently (or worse on purpose) ?

It works fine on all my other android devices except my Galaxy S4. Only this device has all the app blocking restrictions.

You could try an app called Invisible Protector. You can use it to lock your apps, but instead of the app showing up as locked it will show up w/ a FC error, and you can then use several different ways to access the locked app. And the only place the Protector app shows up is in the Widgets list. They also have one (Invisible Protector II) that doesn't show up at all. You have to dial a command to get to the settings.
For example I have mine setup so that when the error pops up it gives me an option to send an error report and in the next field I just enter my password and the app loads.

But there is administrator under settings but I can't get it setup

That administrator option under settings I believe is to enable administrator features to certain apps - for instance allow a find my phone app to enable the GPS without going through the warning dialog, or enable a wipe app to remotely wipe the entire device's memory without confirmations if you lose it.
Ok thanks that's to bad I would love to have a guest account

Thee is a developer asking for testers for just what you are asking for look in the bottom forum section for apps and themes
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1478321
I think this is the thread
Use this with a app lock program.
That being said, there is no 'non-hackish' way to do that. While the kernel supports true multiuser, the rest of the OS doesn't. The Admin stuff in the settings is for locked-down devices integrated into corporate networks (i. e. you're only allowed to use apps approved by your boss and installed by your admin and your device gets wiped if you try to get around it... though it can be made less strict)
I also use an app to lock thing down. Only I know of
Sent from my AT100 using Tapatalk
The lockdown works via certain apps that install security hooks in your device -- basically giving them the ability to remote-wipe the device or do other funny stuff without your consent. The only app I know of that acually uses this is Junos Pulse, used to access Juniper SSL VPN networks (mostly in corporate or university settings), though I guess some of the 'remote admin' capabilities of antivirus tools use the same mechanisms.
The bottom line: Your app may actually use the mechanisms I described in my earlier post. If you want to check, see settings -> location & security -> device administrators.

I noticed this post on the Gtablet site. It looks to do what you are asking for. Read down the the last post on page 1. I have not tried it yet so cant verify whether it works or not.

can multi users share apps

I got my son another nexus.
I want to download my apps for him to use but I want to keep him on his own user account.
I read that multi users have separate apps, but is there any way to share the apps on one device across users similar to windows?
Drop box?

That is the way multiuser on 4.2 works, as long as you are talking about two users on the same device.
If you each have your own Nexus - that is a place I do not want to go.
We each have a device, but I loaded some of my apps on his device. I want him to sign in to his own user acct on the Nexus and have access to all the apps I installed on that device under my user acct. Is that not possible?

The play store app has an Options button.
Click it and select Add Account, and give yours.
Important: Uncheck all the Synch options you are presented with.
Now he can see and install all the apps from your account.
Remove your account from that user when done.
Only guaranteed to work if both users are on same device. Never tried it any other way.
I'm quite sure this violates TOS.
You can have 2 user accounts on one login on one nexus. Meaning one user can have apps from multiple accounts.
But on 2 nexus you can't just 'send' him the app. That's called piracy.

No it's not. I can install on multiple devices. I own these devices. I just want my other user on my device access to the apps I installed. I'm not sending any apps. I install them on the device through the play store

Locked out of US Play Store

I travel in and out of the US a couple times a year. ATM, I have a US payment method and address, I'm in the US using a T-Mobile SIM. I can't access country-restricted apps, such as Pandora and Hulu. According to MarketHelper (or whatever it was called) I am T-Mobile US. I've called contacted Google, and they've refused support since I'm running a custom ROM (CM nightlies). Hence two questions:
Any ideas about the market issues?
How can I revert to stock and be able to come back to CM easily? I can't make a nandroid because I have 10GB of Google Music.

try clearing the data for the market app, then reopen it and log in.
Google had me do that, and also the data for Google Play services. By logging back in, do you mean delete my Google account from sync settings and re-add it?

no. when you open the play store after deleting data, it asks you to accept terms of use. i meant that.

Google uses a combination of the country your email address was reg in, as well as a few other things to determine what country store your app uses.
That's unfortunate, but how can I force it to reset? I don't even remember what country my email was registered in, but I'm sure in the US now and have been for the last year. I can confirm it's account related because I logged into another account and it works fine.

Only way is to contact google about it and tell the what is going on. They maybe be able to help you but dont hold out to hope.
Yes, they're support is pure garbage. I've been in contact with them but they're really no help.
Try going to Google Play My Account > Settings and confirm the carrier and device is correct. Next, try to install Pandora to the device. If it wont, it tell you why.
As I said previously is T Mobile US and I can't install Pandora. It seems to be an account issue because with a different account on my phone or on the website I can install Pandora

Try installing it from the web site with the same account that does not work on your phone. I may hint as to why it won't install.
When I had my Nexus S in Paris on SFR SIM, I was able to install SFR apps, but not update some US restricted ones, so I believe the market is tied to the SIM card, regardless of where the Google account was created. Other services, like Google Voice would depend on where the account was created (US only).
SIM, payment method, addresses are all US now.
I can't install even from the web (using my account).
With a different account I can install from my phone or web.
From the website it says: "This item cannot be installed in your device's country"

OK, your account still thinks you have a NON US SIM card. Power off, remove the SIM, power on and connect to WiFi. Check the web and see if the carrier clears itself. If you have market enabler installed, remove it, or try a different US carrier.
This is a bit of a stretch, but could you make a new gmail in the U.S and just use that one for the market?

I can confirm this works, I logged in from my work gmail and it works just fine. It seems like it would be a radical step to switch my Gmail account though. Theres gotta be a better way.
I called again, and this time they had me do something similar but slightly different (and ridiculous if you as me). I went to a paid app that WAS available to me (I randomly chose Minecraft) and I clicked buy (it was showing the wrong currency but I clicked anyhow) and then accepted the permissions, leading me to the next screen, which is a confirmation screen, in which the app will be purchased if you hit buy again but you don't, and you hit back and go back to the app. At this point you exit the Play Store and then (without force stopping it) you clear its data. You open it again, accept the terms and voilá! At least in my case this solved it, for some reason...
I must add that I removed foreign credit cards from google wallet (which according to previous conversations with them should have been a non-issue unless it was selected as default, which it never was), that I had on file but haven't used lately, so maybe that was related and that + a wipe of play store data was needed, I guess I'll never know now...

[Q] [MH8] Security Policy Update

Hi All,
I recently updated to MH8. However, i received a request to do a security policy update. I click okay it attempts then says "update failed due to network issues". Despite me having full wifi connection (also tried using network data).
Any ideas? Since the update UCCW also fails to load due to what I presume were the updates to samsung's no longer permissive SELinux.
Same issue here, Also, twitter and whatsapp apps are not working after MH8 update.
Anyone any fix?

Solved
If you get the security privacy update failed and cannot connect to the server, check the apps you have and uninstall the ones that could stop any other app's processes or services. Here is a quick solution:
1. Uninstall the app that ceases to function like Whatsapp, Twitter... etc).
2. Uninstall the apps that manage RAM or Control Processes like : "Task Manager".
3. Reboot your device.
4. Install fresh copy of Whatsapp or Twitter (or the app that previously had the issue).
5. Reboot again.
Now the Security Privacy Issue icon should disappear from the top bar.
You can live happy with Enforcing if you don't plan to root the device, otherwise you have to wait for a workaround or solution for that in XDA.
Surely, the latest update did nothing but to turn SELinux to Enforcing. This was a lesson to all of you and me too and all people who accept the licenses and updates without reading and doing their own research
Regards
I've looked around and seems that in the UK it's a significant issue as the networks haven't been set up to deal with it.

[Q] Nexus Player with Google Apps accounts?

Has anyone had any luck using their Nexus Player with a Google Apps account? So far I've had none. The NP will let you log in to a GA account but no resources of that account are available (no tv/movies/music/games/apps are available) because the Device Policy app is not installed and not directly installable from the play store. I tried side-loading the app but it just crashes before after the first screen.
I'm not rooted and I'm running stock because I've not done anything but try to login to my account yet.
Using a non-GApps account isn't really an option. While it would work, I wouldn't have access to all the things I'd exactly want to use on the NP like movies/music/games.
Worked for me. I also have 2-factor enabled on my account. Paid apps work. Movies work. YouTube works. I have not tried playing any games, but I did launch Google Play Games and I was able to browse my achievements.

What mobile device settings do you have enabled on your apps account? Do you have "Enforce policies on Android devices" enabled?
Do you have Device Policy installed/enforced on your other devices? (I do.)

Did you fix the issue with NP and google app account? If yes, how?
Nope, have not found any way of using this thing. Probably going to try and sell it off before it loses it's value.
Everything with NP works fine for me with my free Apps-account. I have 2-factor auth.
Have you contacted Google? Their support might be able to help.

Do you have device policy enforced? I don't know if that's an option with free Apps accounts. On my (paid) account I have the "Enforce policies on Android devices" enabled because, well, I want to enforce domain policies on the devices using it. This is what requires you to install the Google Apps Device Policy app. It's that app that I have installed on all my other Android devices that I can't use on the NP. I did side-load it, but it just crashes.

Well, I asked for help in the Nexus device forum, there isn't one specific to the Nexus Player. Of course it went unnoticed.
I had the same issue. I the only solution I could find was to disable 'Enforce policies on Android devices'. It's not ideal but the Nexus Player was useless to me otherwise. Google needs to create a Google Apps Device Policy app compatible with NP.
