It was advertised to monitor blood glucose, and after buying a galaxy s4 there is clearly no way of logging glucose readings or connecting a blood monitor. I even called samsung mobile support and they confirmed that it supports glucose logging but they have absolutley no idea how to access the function. It seems to me that they have advertised this feature but have not built it into s health. Thoughts on this? :banghead:

Open S Health, go to settings, then "add more features". There it states blood glucose as an accessory related feature.

This feature / software needs to be downloaded separately and it isn't available yet! Even if you'd get your hands on a suitable Samsung or 3rd party hardware, you may still have to wait on that in the worst case!
From a practical standpoint: I am pretty sure that Samsung will offer the above glucose and blood pressure software once their hardware is available worldwide. But they'd shoot themselves in the foot if they'd offered it now and people would buy competitor products, so that is why they are waiting to do so!

You make a good point, I suppose I'll just be checking sammy's website until something is released. I might try getting 3rd party cables to try and connect them, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Which kind of cables connected to what?
In principle you can also use totally different apps, i.e. I am sure there are already blood glucose and blood pressure items out there.
(That have their own Android app...)
And I'll definitely consider those, after Samsung published their devices in my country, because I don't plan to pay more just because it says "Samsung" or integrates with S-Health.

i want to be able to use my Galaxy Tab as a datalogger/basic tuner for the custom ECU running the engine in my car. (i would actually pay a dev 'decent' money to make something like this, needs to communicate with a BT RS-232 serial adapter, and the software can probably be ported from the OpenSource Linux program)

I've got a couple of suggestions for apps for the senior people at Samsung.
#1 How about an Android Market app for Galaxy Tabs sold in Dubai. Or a massive warning on the box that it doesn't come with Android Market, despite the press release for Galaxy Tab not indicating that Android Market is market specific and the Samsung UAE website showing photos of the Android Market icon on the Galaxy Tab:

I'd like a nice app for google books, specifically the 'my library' part. There are a number of good book manager apps in the market, but none of them sync or integrate with google books. Then there's one or two apps that do sync with google books, but they don't have the other functionality I'm looking for.
What it needs to do is:
Sync with Google Books, not just the full book list, but individual shelves, please.
ISBN/ISSN search, from keyboard or barcode scan (maybe even integrate google goggles to recognize the cover)
Maybe a cover search.
Text search inside books (can just pipe the results from google books)
If it has a nice UI, even better, but that's not the top priority IMHO.

I have only one request.... as others have said... please let us use it as a phone.
Have them post some anonymous post with a simple method that allows us to do that.
Otherwise, I am not keeping it.
A podcast player that knows to jump to the next chapter inside a podcast, and diplay each chapter info or image. Like the iTunes on iPad.

I don't think it's that simple - at least not for CDMA devices.
I can only see that the carriers who have decided that this Tab can't be used as a phone, and have forced Samsung into this. Quite why they've decided this, I've no idea, but since I suppose that they feel that since the iPad can't have voice, the Tab doesn't need it either.
I suppose Samsung could release a network unlocked GSM Tab which supports both TMo and AT&T frequencies, but if they do this they may alienate the carriers who then won't carry Samsungs smartphone range, which let's face facts, is the bread and butter of their mobile business.
What you really need to be doing is boycotting the Tab in the US until the carriers see sense and allow you to use them as a phone.
We may pay more for our Tabs without a contract over here in the UK, but at least they are fully functional!

FWIW, I don't think that its Samsungs fault that there is no Android Market in Middle-Eastern Tabs - it seems that this is the case for all Android devices (see here).
I know that's about as useful to you as a chocolate teapot, and I fully agree that there should be at least some obvious warning that there is no Market on the device.

For those who can phone...
1. Voice recognition
What really is missing from my perspective is voice recognition since we need an ear phone to speak.
It makes no sense to have to take out the phone from the pocket to place a call.
We should be able to perform this from the ear phone.
2. Task manager
It makes me crazy no to be able to go to an application from the default task manager. We can only kill apps.
3. Google maps and Contact Manager should be integrated
4. Calendar tab should appear in Phone application and integrated with Contacts Manager.
Since I am using that device for professional purpose I am more interested in real life application than in Asphalt game.

No offense Dave, but I'm talking about US GSM phones and really don't want a lecture about what I should or should not be doing.
I am quite aware that UK/Euro phones are fully functional.
The guy asked for suggestions ... I gave him one.
You know, the more I think about the Xoom the more I feel like it is missing 1 key ingredient. A built in IR sensor thing for the T.V.
It would make a great universal remote! I've seen plenty of high end remotes that have the same dimensions. Plus what a better way to tie in Google T.V.
I could see a t.v. guide app on the Xoom where you touch the program you want to watch, and it changes the channel for you, or sets the DVR up to start recording.

well if you use tivo I believe there is a remote for that. PS3 integration will work as well.
It's too big for a remote, and the battery life isn't there. Most connected TV solutions have wifi remote interfaces. IR would be cool, but it was never the most successful feature in phones. Side note, isn't it possible to run a 3rd party IR blaster from the top mounted headphone port?

I've read conflicting results on the SD card. The official specs on motorola's website does not list an SD card slot / expansion. others have said it comes disabled by default and will be enabled via a software update post release. Sill others say it comes with a usable SD slot.
No idea 100% though. If it's excluded, I'm not going to get one.
Same thing for full HDMI output of the screen. I don't think I want it without it, and I can't confirm / deny that it can/will do that.

How about some productivity integration. I've got no problem with Google Docs as it is, I just don't enjoy opening a web page to type, what if I'm offline? I haven't been with android for a while so there could be a decent native app that I don't know about.
I've looked at the Tablet version of Quickoffice which looks quite impressive, though the considerable lag put me off.

I have been a fan of XDA and appreciate the development and support the devs provide. But last few days a thought is bugging me continuously. We saw a lot of posts about S Voice and other apps being ported to other devices. Specially for S Voice, I believe that it's illegal as this could potentially cause Samsung to lose sales. My views:
1] We know that this is re-designed vlingo. vlingo is available in market, S Voice is NOT. Clear indication that they (as in Samsung) don't want the app to be used with other devices and they are not willing to sell it separately. Using vlingo from market is NOT same as using S Voice.
2] Did Samsung give us the permission to use/modify and distribute the app?
3] There is some infrastructure costs associated with running the services. It costs money to install and maintain servers and network. I work in enterprise storage management, so I am aware of costs associated with such massive infrastructure. Who pays for the non-SGS3 devices using the services?
4] Did Samsung every promise that SGS2/Nexus or other phones will get S Voice? So, why should we assume that other Samsung-device owners have the divine right to use a feature meant for SGS3?
5] It is one of the main USP for SGS3. Check here. This is listed as the top-most feature in the SGS3 product page. Hacking this app to be used with other phones is going to harm the phone sale. Is that not clear enough?
6] When Samsung started blocking connections from other devices - was that not an indication that they want the service exclusive for SGS3?
7] How is this different from movie piracy? The uploader never gains anything, but the studios/producers lose money.
8] What if Samsung starts locking their device in future with locked bootloaders/DRM/encryption because of such activities? Can we then blame Samsung for locking the devices?
9] Android is open source - but why assume that every feature in any Android is also open source? If someone can show me that S Voice is open source software, I will retract my statement.
It's sad that most people here equate freedom with piracy. Freedom and piracy are not same thing. Such act in the name of open source and community-feeling does not make it right. Maybe Samsung won't do anything about it -- but it does NOT make this act any better. It will just prove that Samsung considers this to be a petty nuisance (I am not using the word crime as I know nobody is doing this for any monetary gain).
Though I support open initiative with regards to Android, but I can't support such act.

An initial test version of S Voice which was found online has been blocked as Samsung Electronics does not want consumers to judge the quality of the voice feature based on a test version. When the product is launched, users of GALAXY S III will be able to fully experience S Voice.

If they explicitly didnt want it to be shared with other android phones they could have prevented this easy in one of 2 ways,
1. integrate it into touchwiz framework
2. link the phones imei or unique identifier to the app and set up a database on the servers, similar to siri's protection.
Samsung wanted this app to be freely available as they have done nothing to protect its redistribution. I dont think they mind this because they have NO competitor in the Android market and are far superior to any other OEM that produces android phones.
PS. The Android OS is open source but there are many applications that have closed source to protect their business. Touchwiz source is never fully open sourced and neither is Sense.
I remember a year ago with the CM team asking for help from Samsung for little bits of protected code to get the camera fully functioning on the stock android rom (CM7 ROM).

My view is that we took the application and made it compatible with other devices, Samsung never explicitly gave the permission.
Maybe they thought it would be easier to upgrade the app if it's not integrated into the TW. But I fear such activity may force them to become less dev-friendly in future.
It's a different story if in future they make the code available for CM9 or other projects separately. I just hope not, but the way it's being spread over the internet, I fear they will react in some way. Also throws a bad light over XDA.

Anyway, I don't get this mentality that if something is not impossible to take, it's ok to take it.
I will ask about the validity of ripping/porting the samsung apps and post back to this thread. If there is anything illegal about it (and im not sure there is unless the apps have been licensed specifically to the Galaxy S3) then any links on xda will be taken down.
I cant do anything about the rest of the internet though lol.

Much appreciated. I wanted this to be brought to the notice of MODs. Nobody wants XDA to be in bad light for such a petty affair.
As for the apps (specially S Voice) being exclusive to SGS3, I think so. That's what I infer from Samsung's statement in Verge:

Mac OS X doesn't require a product key, but that doesn't mean my friend can just use my installation DVD legally, it all depends on the T&C's
The fact Samsung have blocked it for other devices should give an indication of their decision towards people using this software on another device. They may not send the FBI to kick down your door and arrest you, but cracking it to spoof a SGSIII for example would probably get a DMCA take-down notice pretty quickly. They almost certainly won't want all and sundry freely enjoying one of the big features of their new flagship device.
I have e-mailed Samsung PR dept on their views about this issue. Not sure if they check their Inbox
Unless we hear otherwise from Samsung, we will follow the normal site policy. In this case (though it is an edge case) for the moment we're allowing it.
If this is the case, then all devs who port roms from other models are in breach also.

If playing an Online game, you may encounter and NPC (Non-Player Character).
I think you might be referring to NFC (Near Field Communication) is what I think that stands for. It among other things, allows you to use Google Wallet (if compatible) to use your device to pay at retailers that have NFC compatible payment systems.
You wave your device over their device and done..
This also allows for other interesting interactions between your phone and NFC tags.

It also has to do with android beam which allows you to "beam" things like apps and web pages over to other nfc enabled android devices with android 4.x

Just wondering if there is a specific answer as to whether the IR blaster will/can work in custom ROMs.I have read/heard that in some ROMs, like CM 10.1 I believe, that it doesn't work "yet". So should I assume that it's catch-as-catch-can?
For full disclosure, I'm still using my N4 but am strongly considering grabbing an S4, primarily because I can't stand the N4 battery life anymore, want LTE again ( I had an S3 briefly) and a better camera would be nice. But, I will almost certainly root and flash something more stock but definitely want to keep the IR functionality.

It's highly unlikely that custom non-TouchWiz roms like CM10.1 will be able to use the IR blaster. I'm hopeful that the upcoming Google Edition of the GS4 will have functionality so it can be ported to AOSP roms.

Really? I'm not a developer by any stretch, but does that mean that they have no way of accessing the hardware? What if you were to use a 3rd party remote app, like Peel?
Push the SamsungWatchOn app to your phone and see if it works.

It doesn't. I tried it. There are no drivers for the IR Blaster. I would say unless the Google edition has it we are SOL. No apps work it that I tried, and I tried most all of them in the Play Store.
The Google edition of the S4 will not use the Samsung apps or make use of some of the hardware from what I understand. No S-view or gestures or temp sensors or IR or any of that. Which is a huge bummer if you ask me. We don't need T-Wiz but make use of the hardware and capabilities at least.
Just do yourself a favor and download Smart Remote. Problem solved.

I'm no dev either.... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!
I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that the Google version won't leave half the hardware useless.
my comment is not to bash, it's just my opinion. i get that people want to run stock android because they are used to it from other devices or they may just like the look and feel of it. i like stock android also, just not on my gs4. there is hardware on this phone that stock android can not take advantage of. like all the sensors and aspects of the camera. i just cant bring myself to have stock android knowing that i paid for a phone that can do other things yet i cant use those other things. i dont know what the google edition of gs4 will have, but something tells me it will just be like us putting an aosp rom on our devices right now and not having the drivers to take advantage of the other aspects of the phone hardware. makes me feel like why did i buy this phone with these sensors on it if i cant use them? i should have instead got a different phone that has a 1080p screen with a quad core cpu with ext sdcard, minus the extra gs4 hardware that makes it unique, so that the stock android can take full advantage of.
What about touch squid? Does that work?

no ir blaster driver in rom = no app that can run the hardware. needs to be a touchwiz based custom rom. like mdob rom.
I'm 100% positive they will make use of the IR Blaster or atleast include simple drivers for developers to run with.
Let me make this clear, Samsung is NOT going to produce the device with an IR device on the developer edition if they don't plan on giving Google drivers. As if Samsung is gonna waste money on perfectly good IR Blasters to never ever be used....
It's either gonna have the IR Blaster and have simple functionality, or the hardware will be scrapped to save money.

Samsung includes an 'irda' driver in their open source, isn't that the driver? If that's the case, couldn't someone compile that driver into a kernel and then we could use apps like Smart Remote?
No rom will work if the Samsung Framework is not installed. If it were as easy as just installing the IR driver in the ROM, i'm pretty sure all roms would be compatible with it by now, or some dev would create a patch for it
Nothing to see here you need Touchwiz to use it. I would not bet on the Google edition having it. Google will not have all the bells and whistles like everybody things.
You need ir blaster stick with stock rom and forget the rest.
The framework is definitely needed for stuff like WatchOn or anything that calls the IR Blaster through the framework, but an app like SmartRemote that calls the hardware directly through the drivers wouldn't need the framework.
I didn't look too much at the irda drivers but I an fairly certain that one could just compile support for that in and if the app is non-samsung that the support should be there the same as any external ir blaster.

I doubt the actual hardware will be scrapped. This would require a change to their hardware manufacturing process which will be a costly change for them. It seems that the Qualcomm S4s are almost completely identical less firmware and software changes, which would occur after the hardware build.
Because the production volumes of the S4 are so high, the cost of adding these sensors is probably trivial, either cents or fractions of a cent per unit. Changing the production lines to modify the manufacturing, after all of the labor, QC, etc., is likely to cost more per phone than simply including the part, at least at the production volumes we can reasonably expect to see.
Given the volumes on this edition of the S4 will most likely be nowhere near the volumes of the ATT or VZW standard models, the cheapest way for Samsung to create this SKU would be to re-badge the existing hardware with the vanilla software. After all, this is exactly what they did with the i337m.
Of course, this doesn't guarantee drivers will be available for the IR. However, this model is targeted to the enthusiast market, and they would likely see sales of the new SKU cannibalized by other models if they didn't include basic functionality.
After all, why would I buy the Google edition with no IR support when I can go buy the T-Mobile model, with a choice of carrier subsidy, if the end result is essentially the same? I could just buy that one and flash CM10 or equivalent if I don't get IR either way, and I can get that from my friendly neighborhood retail outlet.
Since this model seems to be marketed to enthusiasts, the amount of loss they would sustain by not including an IR driver could be substantial enough that it wouldn't make economic sense to have created the additional SKU in the first place.
Again, this is all speculation, but this is where I'd place my bet. Now watch, since I've stated this, Murphy's Law will kick in and I will be completely wrong...
