I upgraded from the Galaxy S to the Galaxy S 2 a few months ago and realized the stock camera app does not come with panoramic shot anymore. Been using another app for this but it is not as seamless or smooth as the built in function with the original Galaxy S. GS2 also has less shooting modes (for one the add-me function, it used to be a lot of fun adding random objects to the photo without post edit). I'm now very tempted to buy the Note as that was the phone I intended to get instead of the GS2 - but does the Note have the panoramic shot built-in with the stock camera app? Also the flash on my GS2 seems harsh (blindingly bright) which I'm sure I can tweak if I know how (if you can educate me know that it would be much appreciated), does the flash on the Note go as bright? My work phone which is a HTC Desire HD has a similar flash but it is not as bright and the photos come out better...
Thanks in advance!

What are you talking about... the Galaxy SII does have a Panoramic function. I've just checked mine and it's there.
I also checked mine and I have Panorama, it's in the options and not just a simple flick of a button! You need to hit the options, and then shooting mode then select Panorama. SGS2 stock rom!
I can't wait for my Note!
Does note's stock camera app have time laps mode?

I can't prove it since I sold my SGSII, but somehow I have the same feeling the Note takes better photos. Quick pics I took to test its details: http://imageshack.us/g/546/20111219094914w.jpg/
(warning: large files)
I looked for the panoramic mode before under options and I can swear it wasn't there. I went and bought a pano app and have since rooted my phone and now found the panoramic mode in my stock camera app after a comment above!
Thanks for pointing it out

I would like the panoramic mode if it didn't lose so much resolution, i think you can get beter results by taking the photos in normal mode and use some Panorama software to make the photo.
Hi everyone, I am thinking about upgrading to the Nexus 4, but the only thing that is holding me back is that I have heard the camera isn't very good, especially in low light. Is that true? A good camera is a very important consideration for me when considering a phone. I currently have a Galaxy S2. Has anyone owned both phones and would be able to comment on how the pictures compare between phones? I find the camera on the S2 to be much worse than on my wife's iPhone, but I definitely don't want an iPhone. I have also considered the S3, S4 or HTC One, but they are a bit too expensive for me. I think I remember Google saying something about how they were not impressed with smartphone cameras and wanted to improve them, so the alternative is I might wait for the next Nexus phone or the rumored X Phone.
Thanks!
Based on my camera usage patterns, I find them pretty close. (I had a Galaxy S2 before switching), although I will rate the S2 marginally better, because, there are situations where I find the S2 camera resolving more detail which is indecipherable on the N4 camera; Although the HDR mode on the N4 is damn cool, which definitely helps in producing better low light images than the S2 for still objects.
If you are not in a hurry, you might want to wait for the next Nexus if the camera is important. As you said, Google is rumored to incorporate some camera-wizardy into their next phone along with Nikon. No one knows how true this is, but, safe to say that the camera on their next device should be way ahead than the one on the N4.
Thanks 3xeno!
Yeah, I'm not in a hurry so I might just stick with the S2 for now. I had been thinking about the Nexus 4 for a while, and my carrier just lowered the price (even lower than buying directly from Google! ) so I started seriously considering it, but there's no point in buying it if I'm going to be disappointed in the camera. The Nexus 4 does otherwise look like a very nice device, but then I do like the removable battery and microSD slot on my S2. I also like the UI on the stock Android camera app better than the Touchwiz camera, but I flashed the camera app on my S2 so now I have both

The N4 is pretty cheap! You still have probably about 6-7 months assuming a N5 comes out considering Google's launch history.

I had a galaxy nexus and an s3, i use the camera a lot on my phones, and the nexus 4 is the worst in that field among those 3. The s3 camera was just impressive. As for galaxy nexus, 1080p was way better than on nexus4, more details, better color saturation, better bitrate.. Photos were nearly the same.
My advice is, the s2 is still a great phone, keep it for a little while longer and then get whatever's coming next..
P.s. i find the aosp camera UI crappy, minimal options, and sometimes hard to switch stuff...
But, despite that, the nexus 4 is one hell of a phone, and it looks and feels really premium.

Next Nexus device should come out at the same time the N4 did, around the end of 2013.
The N4 indeed has a meh camera, even compared to my Ion. But 8mpix are enough imho
My previous phone had an 8.0 MP camera with poor optics and so the N4's camera feels like a massive upgrade. No complaints from me.
Note: Megapixels mean nothing if the optics suck. My 5.0 MP point and shoot from 2005 still blows away every smartphone camera I've seen. If you know in advance that you want to take photos to keep and remember, bring along a point-and-shoot! I generally only use the phone camera for quick shots that I'll likely delete a short time later (i.e. whatsapping a photo of an item to a family member to ask if I should buy it).
Its true that pictures in low lighting or inside look absolutely horrible on the nexus 4. However if you take a lot of pictures outside (like I do myself) the camera is really good compared to my galaxy s2. I am really impressed with the autofocus on the phone. If you want check the "photos taken by your nexus 4" thread in the general section, it should give you a pretty good idea of what the camera is like.

I must be in the minority for preferring the aosp camera over the touchwiz camera. I find that the touchwiz camera takes forever to load, and if I want to review the pictures it takes forever for the gallery to load. I love that the aosp camera switches back and forth between the camera and the gallery seamlessly. I also find that it's very easy to change settings on the aosp camera, just hold your finger and drag. Turning the flash on and off is particularly fast and easy to do.

I take a lot of pictures of my kid, so a lot of them are indoors and that's why the camera is so important to me. The camera on the S2 takes great pictures outside, but inside they can be grainy. I also have a point and shoot, but it's not always within arm's reach like a smartphone and I find that it is very slow taking pictures, so if I want to capture a smile it's gone by the time it takes the picture (I even tried the smile recognition feature, but it doesn't work so well).
the camera isn't too bad. probably better IQ than my old 5MP hd2, albeit alower and clunkier in use.
3rd-party camera apps make it a bit slicker and give better control over focus/ exposure/ flash etc.
one of the big drawbacks with camera phones is poor dynamic range which the HDR mode in the N4 stock camera app partially overcomes for static subjects. with fast-moving subjects unfortunately you get double-exposures.
My major gripe with the Nexus 4 camera is photos/video show in the wrong orientation. i.e. a video I filmed in portrait plays back on the PC rotated 90 degrees wrongly, so it shows as landscape. I have to put it into Windows Movie Maker, rotate to right, re-save then upload to facebook/youtube.
Thanks rayiskon, it is very helpful. I currently have a galaxy nexus, and I'm considering upgrading to nexus 4 through a boxing day deal. If the camera in nexus 4 is even worse than that in galaxy nexus. I would not choose nexus 4. Probably s3 or nexus 5 are much wiser choices.

Hey people, how are you all doing? I too got a Galaxy Note III about a month ago and after a lot of experiences, I thought of asking for some advice.
When i use the camera app, the image looks clear and fantastic on the screen but as soon as I click capture, the saved image isn't what I see while capturing. I made sure I don't move the phone while capturing and tried it in different environments as well but the same continues.
I haven't rooted the phone yet and made sure that no app installed on the phones messes with the camera. So, any solution for the problem?
Thanks!

Dear All,
I just bought my new note 4 yesterday, the N910G Snapdragon variant.
However, the camera pictures and the viewfinder itself shows paint-ish effect and looks boxy or say, oversharpened. I suppose it is definitely an issue with software/image processing algorithms. Has anyone observed it ?
To confirm the issue, I returned this showing the issue and got another fresh piece which has the same issue as well !!!
To cross check if it is only with this snapdragon variant, I checked with my friend's note 4 with Exynos variant, his pictures are as it should be for what we all know about Note 4's superior optics and pictures. It comes out great. His OS is still in 4.4.4 KitKat.
Only then I thought, it might be the issue with KitKat update, because his exynos variant has same Sony IMX240 Sensor as that of mine (Snapdragon variant).
What to do now ???
I am stuck with the crappy pictures that looks irritating !!! I have tweeted to Samsung but yet to get reply.
Before this Note 4 I was using my Note 2 and it served me 3 good years. Absolutely no major issue! Pictures always were tack sharp for its generation.
With Note 4 I was hoping better optics performance but to my disguise, it is worse than Note 2.
PS: I am not a noob in photography world as I have fair share of knowledge about the same.
Check the pictures
Help me !!!
Are you sure you've removed the protective plastic film off the lens, when I got my first one (also a N910G) it took me a few days to notice it even exitsted, it was trimmed perfectly to the lens shape, making it very difficult to see.
I also have an N910K (exynos), the cameras on both work a treat.
Thanks for replying.
Yes, I have removed that protective film when I bought. I saw it was there, when I was inserting my sim card. So I removed it then.
This picture was taken without plastic cover on it !!
Are you on lollipop 5.0.1 ?
Mine has a Sony IMX240 which supposedly performs better than ISOCELL of Samsung right ?
Any other solution ?
Sent from my SM-N910G using XDA Free mobile app
Both of mine are on 5.0.1, and both cameras work fine, not sure what could be wrong.
Could you please check your camera firmware once ?
*#34971539#
And can you post a picture taken on your note4?
Sent from my SM-N910G using XDA Free mobile app
Can u post the EXIF of the image ? Try using SnapCamera HDR , withOUT Sharpening and De-Noise effects from its settings . That will give an almost unprocessed image from the IMX 240 . This facilitates us to study the output from camera without Touchwiz's software processing.
Also a 100% zoom of a well lit photo & a low light photo comparison might give you extra clarity on this issue.
I have been very much satisfied with the optics , It even produces sharper images than my D3100 with Kit lens
Thanks for taking time to reply.
I have tried comparing everything. The pictures from my Note 4 looks like oversharpened or say over processed. Like I said, with my friend's Note 4 with Kitkat 4.4.4, pictures from same IMX 240 looks tack sharp as it should.
As you have asked, here's the one I took from SnapCamera HDR with turning off everything like brightness=0
Contrast=0
Sharpness=0 and so on.
I am attaching 2 pictures here. One taken with SnapCameraHDR and other from the touchwiz camera.
Now you can compare.
Can you please, post a picture taken from your Note 4 ? Also, is your Note 4 on stock 5.0.1 ?
And I have D3200 with kit lens, which is in another league comparing pictures with Note 4.
I tried to compare pictures of it too.
Any Solution ? I feel like there is an issue with Lollipop Camera firmware.
As per my understanding, everyone has this issue after they have updated to lollipop, but it often go unnoticed as all are used to its great camera performance !
Sent from my SM-N910G using XDA Free mobile app
try check the hardware use as well... there are 2 type that i can see... the sony one is damn great... but the one which use samsung sensor are damn stupid.
Yeahh that is what I have written on my first post. Please read it.
I have checked and mine is IMX 240 sony's sensor.
All this is due to lollipop that came built-in when I bought this new phone.
It is irritating to see even the viewfinder.
Do you think the issue can get fixed if I wipe cache while holding power button
ON with volume up and home button simultaneously ?

Sorry to say this but the "problem" is what people actually like, i come from a Nokia Lumia and recently Microsoft/Nokia replaced the Nokia Camera app with a Lumia Camera app. The diffrence is huge, the new app is over saturated, over sharpening.
People like images to look sharp and pop out of your screen with lively colours, and i get that. But some of us want "natural" looking photo's that dont hurt your eyes with all the artifacts and enhancements.
Also never use your default samsung gallery to look at the pics you have taken. It oversharpens your pictures even more by 5x.
I use Quickpic https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alensw.PicFolder&hl=nl
to look at my pictures and its much more pleasing on the eyes.
My Note 4 on Lollipop 5.0.1, my wife's Note 4 on KitKat 4.4.4. I realized that KitKat help Note 4 take the best pics!
@Vivek Mandre Check out this and this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61269463
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60691593&postcount=478
I was in 5.0.1 in both of those pics ! I agree that 4.4.4 takes the best pics but the difference in quality was very less that I doubt it is a placebo . In 5.1.1 I feel the camera is snappy as hell and good as always . I would suggest you to flash a kitkat firmware . Once again I take a lot of pics with note 4 and D3100 , Note 4 tries to catch up in a lot of well lit situations !
Absolutely!
So it is apparent that, there is a bug in lollipop which I don't think they will solve with 5.1.1 update.
I am finger crossed to see, if it doesn't get an update in 5.1.1, I will flash original 4.4.4 firmware.
Why not tweet Samsung about this ?
If we all do a bit, everyone will see this and release a fix for this.
No ONE has observed it before I did.
The pictures are irritating to look at, especially if you take in low light.
Pictures look water washed.

Hi Everyone,
I have a 64 gig aluminum Nexus 6p. I'm coming from a note 5 after reading all the reviews about this phone and the improvements in the camera. I was recording video of my daughter today and I've become accustomed to taking pictures while recording video. I dont see that option. It wasn't brought up in any of the reviews that I sawsaw. I thought that it was a basic thing. Is the a Hardware or Software limitation? Can you recommend any apps that I can buy that will allow this if there are any out there?
I'm also wondering about this because it's such a simple, but important feature that my pervious phones had. Anyone?
You will find that it's a software thing built into the samsung camera app.
I just checked and you're right it doesn't allow picture while taking a video. I find this strange since I just checked it with my Nexus 4, 5, 7 and they all allow pictures with video (i knew they did from a long time ago). Even gal nexus does. Strange....
Subbed. Wanna know
Wished it had this feature......nexus 5 had it why can't this one have it. 2 steps forward 1 step back. Could have used it this weekend during a wedding. Also why cant stock google camera app have recording AND picture buttons on 1 screen rather than switching between the 2.
Agreed this is a basic feature. I am amazed it is not there. I also agree that the video and camera were not separate screens but just one screen in the camera app with 2 buttons.
Any third party camera add this?
