That should be for their last resort.
I really think they should think of another way to name future phones though. The M (M7/M4) isn't too bad.

HTC should just follow the car companies!
Next year, the all-new 2014 HTC One
Two years, the all-new 2015 HTC One
And so forth....
I believe that this is a good way for all OEM's to solve the naming problems. Think about it, We can just end up with the Samsung Galaxy S, the LG Optimus (forget the G), and of course the HTC One. No more numbers, letters, or anything that adds confusion.

Honestly, that's not a bad idea. It can just be the HTC One (2014). Most of the other conventions or numbering systems don't really sound very good the the one, and let's face it, HTC cannot afford to dilute it's brand at this point.

You got the right answer here. One of htc's senior officer has said that the naming for "hTC One" is inspired by the naming rule from car industry. So "htc One 2014" is very likely to be the name of the next htc One for 2014.
2nd gen HTC one (2014 model)
3rd gen HTC one (2015 model)
4th gen HTC one (2016 model)
The same naming strategy as cars, Intel and iPods use. It's very simple and easy and when saying the name you will call it the HTC One only the marketing dept will use the 2nd gen, 3 gen etc for ads and on the retail box.
It works just like bmw m6 2013 and then bmw m6 2014 but when someone asks you what car you have you only have to mention the name bmw m6, nobody ever says I have the bmw m6 2014 model it's just to long. HTC ONE will always be HTC ONE the whole purpose is to tell people theirs just One that's above all else.

Bear in mind the current fiasco with ICS and the Desire HD.
So are you going to jump the HTC ship?
Ya well, the one series was a miss with consumers at large ,can't imagine what would have happened if the one x for example had sd card storage and a battery access
We can only hope they die a quick but painful death.

I am already planning my jump over to Samsung rightly or wrongly, but they are talking about launching JB on the S3 and even the S2 in the very near future! And from what I have seen they seem to deliver what they say!
Well I wouldn't want them to die, afterall competition is always good, however I've decided that my DHD shall be my last HTC phone after all that has happened. I'm contemplating on waiting for the next Google phone, immediate updates and a bugless AOSP experience, what else could one ask for?
That is what you get when you mess with all the HTC Desire HD owners!!! Not releasing ICS for their most sold phone and telling their costumers lies about HTC Desire HD performance. And the same with HTC Desire.

It’s a shame that a company with a lot of promise has now just peed of its fan base and almost washed their hand of them.
If you look at the number of ROMs in the development thread you can see that people pretty much rooted their HTC Desire HD as soon as they got them as the hardware far out preformed the software that was loaded and any potential update (although we all knew these wouldn’t come to light! lol )

Don't forget Samsung is from South Korea, so why keep spending money on SK if you know that "everyone" in SK has a Samsung phone :silly:
I hope they won't cancel the ICS update for developers. They had the same problem with Gingerbread update for the Desire.
They never released it as an OTA update, but they released it for developers.
So let's hope they do the same with Desire HD (in the future).
About One-series. It's indeed a sad story, but I think why most people didn't bought the One-phones was because most of them were probably waiting to see the Galaxy SIII and it seems that the SIII is the number one choice now for lots of Android users.
That or the New Galaxy Nexus (fingers crossed it won’t be produced by HTC) that will ruin the Nexus name IMO

Why would HTC ruin it? I like HTC's hardware
1 months ago I planned to buy the One X along with one of my best friends and I almost sell my DHD (it even already entered the "For Sale" thread in one of Indonesia's largest community forum). But after I read so much informations from early adopter of One X about how bad is the HTC's quality control over One X hardware productions I hold my decisions to upgrade because I don't wanna spend my time dealing with HTC service center.

When i heard of the name of the HTC One, I was rather confused. I knew it was the new HTC Phone, that it was better than any other phone in the series of One devices and was their flagship phone for 2013 at least until the One+. But giving it the name "One" was weird to me. It makes it SOUND like it was before the other One devices. I'm sure you can argue that it is the "One" phone to have but if i was an average smartphone user and didn't know much about smartphones, I would pick something like the One X over something named to One if i had no idea what the specs were. It just seems odd to me.
I don't know if I'm the only one who found it weird but what do you guys think?
Definitely my thoughts. Stupid htc.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Stupid name, especially when trying to find accessories liek screen protectors etc, you type HTC one and one x, one s, one x+, one sv a range of one devices come up. the should have stuck to HTC M7 imo sounds much better and easier to distinguish.
The One name is great for puns though i.e it is the 'ONE' for me.
It is weird... but only because the naming conventions are unusual.
Personally, I would have liked it better if they called it the "2013" One X. Or the One Xi, One Xii, One Xii+. etc.
If you ask me I think the name HTC One is far superior than those of One X, One S, One V etc.
Why?
It sound like as if One X, S, V are prototypes Usually when you make prototypes on products you add some sort of unique sub name to distinguish version types and then trim it down when it's already for production.
Or it's as if it is the grandest of all One series.
I'd call it pure laziness

Of course, I haven't slept once since they've announced it because the name of it causes just so much distress. xD No, just curious on how others think about HTC's wonky naming system.
speaking of wonky naming system reminds me of sony
Took a page from Apples book. They did the same with the iPad. Personally I actually like the name One.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I think it is great. They wanted to keep with the one naming and they did. I also think they did it to hopefully keep people less confused with the different variations and will just stick with the "one" as their flagship phone across all carriers. The x, s, v just confused a bunch of people and totally went away from their marketing of the "one". Just as Samsung has their galaxy s, htc from here forward will have the one.
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
I like it too.
I really don't like really fragmented product naming systems that have no relevance to eachother.
Assuming that this is "a new start" in terms of naming, hopefully they stick with it and we can write off their frankly ridiculous naming of the past.
What I mean is that say from now on HTC makes 8 phones a year, they could be named One through to Eight with one being the flagship, and the name reused each year after that for the successor (much like how cars are named).
I know it won't happen that way, but that makes sense to me and when you tell people you have the HTC One, they would KNOW you have the best one.
Simply awesome
Evidence: everybody been asking about the HTC "One"
remember the name is actually an HTC trademark!
The first person I mentioned it to replied back telling me they already released the One...I had to spend some time convincing them otherwise. In that sense it's silly but 99% of the population barely know about HTC, I think they are going with a whole new strategy here despite recycling the name. It indicates a 'rebirth' to me.
I'd like to see them imitate Apple and Sammy's naming convention...HTC One 2...HTC One 3 :silly:
I am already tired of googling for htc one -x -"x+" -s -v -xl -sv
It sounds great, and htc have confirmed that will only be making this one single phone a year (no smaller or '+' the or click version) ; so the problem is what will they call next year's version.
I've just worked it out, it can only be called the Two.?
Actually that doesn't seem so bad then
I like the name.
Random person - "What phone have you got there?"
Me - "Oh, it's the ONE"
Random (now impressed person) - "OMG that sounds awesome! I think I'll go buy one"
After all the Hobbits were a lot more concerned about "The One ring" than "The 2013 One X ring".
i also think the name is kind of awkward...
by now it is already hard to find accessoires etc. online (amazon etc.) for my one x+ (the main problem is the + but also that there is the one S, V, X, ...)
then how will it be with the one? i think then the results of all one X/S/V/XL/X+ will be displayed and this is really a disadvantage.
in my opinion it's just confusing and the name m7 would've been better, both for recgnization and because of the name itself..
I'm probably gonna get the one because HTC got me all excited with the specs. I've always been a Samsung fan but since there's nothing really known about it I'm too hyped up about this phone to change my mind. Lol poor Samsung lost a buyer.

Blind loyalty is dangerous. HTC rushed the launch of the One X and had tons of problems with it. The DNA/Butterfly seems to be faring better. An all-metal mobile device with multiple radios/antennas is a risky move. Every manufacturer that tried it before (including Apple) has had wireless issues. Based on that, victory rallies and celebration for both HTC and the One should be held off until after it’s been in people's hands for a few months. HTC’s never had any issues with hyping their devices but sometimes that hype has been ahead of the actual device/functionality. So the One could be a turning point for them (I hope it is) or its forum could light up with issues like the One X's did. It's way too early to call.
As for the SGS4. Samsung has a multi-billion dollar chip business and spends billions on R&D specifically for that division. To launch the SGS4 which should sell upward of 50MM units with a competitors SoC is asinine and that SoC would be used for a year's worth of production. Same thing applies to moving to LCD with their huge investment in AMOLED. For them to launch a "me too" device that mirrors the One and XZ would be marketing suicide and they know that. Most of the rumors everyone's picking up originated with Samfirmware which is hardly a reliable source based on their track record. If I was betting, I'd go with the SGS4 having a Samsung SoC and SAMOLED display in addition to other new features not on competitive phones. We'll see in three weeks.
yea i think we need to remind those defect figures were only in the first three months or so after a couple of month build quality picked up immensly
but BarryH is right, early adopters oftern burn
that being said, i think HTC experimented with the DNA/Butterfly well enough to prepare for this launch
this leaves the metal casing, i don't think anything can go awfully wrong just dont hug it and expect signal
There is one big difference to the One X launch
the One X was HTC's first polycarbonate unibody, in metal they are experts, and the One X was really rushed even shipped with freaky unfinished software, the HTC One seems to have been cooking for quiet a while and they are already pretty experienced with those chipsets
So many freaking amazing things about these phones. The decision is becoming waay tough.

who the hell cares if he's right
consider this the HTC One was released early this year, it's indeed 2013 phone of the year, ask any SGS3 / SGS4 convert
if HTC is indeed in the red knows, this gives them two years before sale or change of owner ship or even going private, even then under a new form they are most likely to continue operation (they are Taiwan's most prized)
until then? plenty of time for the world to enjoy the HTC One and the software updates are flowing like water
so enough drama, this phone is fulfilling it's job for this year and the year to come
It's the phone of the year, 90% of the world's press agree, otherwise you are missing out

The topic here is the HTC One winning awards. Criticising other manufacturers, or even talking about their rumoured acquisition is not supposed to be here. Promoting Samsung shouldn't be here either. You can talk about whether the One deserves the awards, but I think a battle between the manufacturers belongs elsewhere.

I think this is a huge win for HTC.
This is a software win as well which is, to say the least, mind blowing. I never thought HTC would get here. Sense finally has gotten to the right balance of being functional without being intrusive and lagging the device. The speakers are great and all but what really makes this device is the amazing software that powers it.
You have to give it to HTC for optimization when you see their underclocked Snapdragon 600 chip device (both CPU and GPU) that is running the older LPDDR2 memory take out devices with faster clock speeds and faster memory in every day performance. HTC has struggled with that since the Windows Mobile days and they've finally found their balance.
HTC won me over with the One. And I swore off HTC after the disaster that was the Sensation... Hopefully they can keep churning out winning devices! :highfive:
