My Galaxy S4 is set to arrive shortly and I had been reading about the lack of memory available on the 16GB version. Has anyone found a way to store apps on the MicroSD card? As far as I know 'App 2 SD' doesn't work and all the microsd card is good for at the moment is photos, videos, music, etc.
Any insight would be appreciated

Hello everyone, this might already have been answered, if so please point me there. Anyway, I have a new Acer Iconia Tab a500, and love it, of course. However I seem to be having a problem with my MicroSD Card. I have a 16gb MicroSD card and have formatted it, then inserted it into my tablet, however it does not seem to be working. It shows up that is is mounted, but when I open up 'App to SD' it does not display any external memory. Also if I place a video or picture file on my SD card and attempt to read it, it does not work. Any suggestions?

Acer/Honeycomb, does not support the phone app "apps2Sd". That's for Android version 2x. (phones and a couple of cheap tabs)

Also if you can't read from the card take it out put the card in a cell phone and format it with that. Sounds like you have older version of honeycomb and there are issues reading cards formatted with windows on some brand and file system types.
If the problem continues try a fifteenth brand SD card or posture specs including rom version of your tablet here. This will spark better help.
If you are running 3.2 and above rom most of the above does not apply

If you are worried about game data, there is an app, GL to sd. This is for Gameloft apps. And it works on HC3.2+
Other than that, the ph apps for Gingerbread, when it concerns App2SD or the others, aren't going to work on HC.
Maybe with ICS.
Thanks for the info thus far, I am running Honeycomb 3.2.1, so I am as up to date as possible, I believe? I did not know about the app not supporting Honeycomb. I will try the formatting in my cell phone and see if that helps!

I would stay away from GL to SD, I put it on my a500 and it brought my system to a crawl. It took me a while before I figured out was was slowing my tab down so much and finally narrowed it down to GL to SD. Transferred all my game data back to internal memory and uninstalled GL to SD and my tab is screaming fast again.
no way

I mean you read alot of people say having an sd card slot doesnt matter nowadays with android since you cant install apps to it, etc. Or can you? Can you save your photos taken with the s4 to it? What apps are available to fully utilize the sd card? If you can share how you plan on getting around any limitations.

Photos can be set to be stored on the external sdcard. I also (on my SGS2/and SGS3) have it so my nandroid backups go to the external sdcard. Downloaded files go to my external sdcard. I can also out movies/music/or whatever on my external sdcard and play them. I can also use "Root Explorer" to move anything I want from my internal sdcard and onto my external sdcard. Even with a 32Gb external sdcard and the 16Gb internal sdcard I find that I at times fill up my internal sdcard and have to move MANY files/folders from the internal to external. I haven't put ANY apps onto the external sdcard since my SGS1 and haven't had the need to ever. I have never filled the allotted app /data folder on my SGS2/SGS3 like I did on my SGS1. When I used the SGS1 and moved the apps it made them work slower and caused issues. Again never had it on my SGS2/3's. So NO need to worry about apps moving. I have over 180 apps and no issues (Including downloaded app and system apps). But having a removable sdcard for movies and music has been my best usage. As well I do A LOT of modding on my phone and it takes up a lot of room. So I transfer the files to my external for that as well.

Thats good to know, so I dont know what those people were talking about. As if the sd card was unusable.
Same here, I have over 180 apps and have no space issues when it comes to apps. I take a lot of pictures and record a lot of videos, and that takes more space than anything. I put all data, including backups, ROMs, pictures, videos, music, etc. On the external SD card. There's a ton of space left on my internal card, so for me a 16gb model with an external SD card works great.
I store 12 blue ray movies on my 64gb microsd. Should be enough to keep me busy flying overseas.
SDCARD
Can the 64GB SDCARDs be used with the s4?
First, only guys? 2nd, I'd like to have the ability to enter a 1 character password at the android lockscreen in CyanogenMod.
Lol OK.

So i Got an S4. I rooted it and im running stock 4.2.2 XXUBMEA firmware. With the new update, i can move apps to the SD card, but App data is still internal. you cannot move app data. About 7gb of my internal memory is already taken up by android which leaves me with around 9.23gb left. after installing all my necessary apps, i have left about 7.3gb internal storage left. The problem is here. Most HD games these days have Data files around 1gb. for example, games like Asphalt 7, Batman and GTA Vice City. they all have sd data of around 1gb. And as you know, on the s4, unfortunately, you can only put Sd data on the internal storage and you cannot put it in the micro SD card. So, in order to play these HD games, i have to use my internal memory. By doing this, i wont have much memory left and will probably run out of memory after 3-5 HD games. What do you think is the best solution for this? How do i play a lot of HD games on my device? After all, I paid a lot for this phone. I hope i did not waste my money. Remember i am rooted. Is there anything i can do?
Thanks
Help will be much appreciated.

I've seen where apps can be moved to the sd card but normally it's not by default. But as far as roms go some have things which are similar which have the ability to move to sd but samsung in general seems to be a bit weary on having them there by default

Some roms do include that option, I've found personally on my own tab 2 that the swap still somehow manages to not completely work like it should.
So I'm new to this whole SD card thing, I've only owned the s6, which obviously, didn't support expandable storage. So my question is - is it possible to move apps onto the SD card slot? I understand there might be a performance hit, but for a lot of apps, I can careless about the performance of the storage on it.
I saw there was a "move to sd card" option for applications on the galaxy s5 - will there be something similar here?
Nope, don't believe so. If it's anything like past devices though, app data can be saved to SD card. Camera can capture to SD, spotify can download tracks to SD, GPS navigation apps can download maps to SD, etc. Main app files will be on main 32GB memory

Thank you. That's good news all around. Now if only some games would store their data on the sd cards.
I currently move apps to my sd card on the Galaxy S5;, using a utility called "All in one toolbox". It allows me to move apps so they run off of my micro SD card. Does anyone know if this will work with the Galaxy S7 edge?

But, if it is anything like past devices, it could have an option to "move app to SD". Has the removal of this feature been confirmed yet? We all know Adoptable Storage is gone, but what about App to SD? Is it confirmed missing, or are we just speculating?
Running MM on my S5 and the Adoptable Storage works so well, I hope Samsung change the mined about this.

Pretty sure App2SD has been a mod / specific vendor addition since... a long time now. That hasn't been a part of Android for years. Removed in Jellybean maybe?
I don't know if Samsung has specifically written this in with the S7, sorry.
I'm pretty sure I heard one of the dudes who did a first impressions on it that an upcoming feature in marshmallow will allow to merge SD card storage with internal .... No idea how credible the dude is though

That is a Marshmallow feature but Google has encouraged manufacturers to remove that feature. The LG G5 and the Samsung S7 phones do not have it.
David Ruddock from Android Police says.
"Google discourages using adoptable storage if:
Your SD card slot is in an area where it may be regularly ejected (i.e., the SIM slot) and/or your phone has "sufficient" internal storage already, which is probably these days 32GB or more. Adoptable storage is apparently intended as a feature for phones with very limited internal storage and for stationary, IoT types of devices.
LG has done the same, and does not have adoptable storage on the G5."

I've got the option to move apps to SD straight out of the box. Go to the Apps, find the app, go to Storage. It's there. Not every app has it but lots do.
Apps on SD Cards Disappearing from Edge
I was able to move some downloaded apps to the SD card. Then I put a few on the Apps Edge. But I found that, if I reboot or power off/on, the apps (not just the icon, but the apps themselves) disappear from the Edge. Has anyone else seen this?
You can do it through adoptable storage:
https://youtu.be/H31UOrXJKH4
I got my S7 Edge yesterday & love it.
However I'm having trouble transferring apps to the SD card. In my case, I can successfully move the app via the Application | Change Storage Location option BUT when I look at the SD card in a file manager, it has only moved the folder structure & the app files remain in internal storage.
Anyone know what the hell is going on?
Cheers.

I am having the exact same issue. Says it moves the apps, but the internal storage and SD card usages do not reflect this; the corresponding directories on the SD are size 0 and empty as well.
go to settings/aplication manager. find the app you want to see if it can go to SD and go to Storage. There you can see if there is Change button .
i mooved many apps to my SD but when i restart my phone i didnt had worked apps.

Sorry but the only thing that happens is a folder is created on the SD to store the app. data. Nobodies apps are moving over to the SD card.
