Yesterday night my phone lost 30% (with wifi on). It was brutal, it's been awake more often than not. I've installed wake lock detector and it shows that Gmaps' NetworkLocationLocator is the main culprit (see screens).
Tonight was better (lost 10%) and no awake lines in the battery manager but maps are still far from being calm.
Is it caused by maps, google now or it can be any other app requesting location? Any tips on how to fix this?
It's Google Now. Either disable it completely, or turn off "Use wireless networks" under Location services.

Is it part of Google Search? I installed it as soon as I rooted my S4 so it definitely is something else. Even Maps is frozen on my phone.
Yeah it is go to Maps>Settings>Location Settings>and uncheck the automatic reporting of your location and set it to Do Not Update from this Device.

Google maps is keeping my phone awake, I cleaned the cache and forced stop but keeps running, It used 12% of my battery in 2 hours so is a issue, any way to fix it?
Uninstall the Google Maps update. Others have had the same issue.

Check if you have Latitude running. It can restart google maps. Also, you might want to do a search on your own, you're not the first one with this problem.
I ripped out crap I didn't use and it helped with speed and responsiveness. Maps was definitely one to go. I can always install it later if needed.
I'm pretty sure it's Latitude that's causing the problem.

I've had this same problem. For me, Latitude was the problem. I don't use it, so I used Ti Backup to get rid of it.
However, my wife uses Latitude and the way she solved the problem is by going into the Latitude settings and turning off the auto-update location feature, which was waking her phone up every 10 mins or so to update her location. Now she has it set so that she has to manually update her location and the battery use issue has gone away.
Latitude was the problem for me also. I turned off Latitude and it was fixed.
How do you keep it shut off? I have the same problem with Latitude but it just keeps starting up again. Only thing working is unchecking using both wireless networks and gps but then no applications can use that stuff which isn't super cool. Latitude is ofc still running doing this but at least it's not draining my battery.

In Latitude > Settings > make sure "Do not update your location" is checked and "Enable automatic check-ins" is not checked. Then sign out of Latitude and you should be good to go.

That's not a solution, though, is it? FWIW, I made a bug report: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=17356

Can I ask what good is latitude without the auto update feature? So your wife keep on manual updating everywhere she go?

I don't use it, so I can't say. I imagine she uses it to check in places, kind of like foursquare, which would be easy enough to do manually, I suppose.

Not much, really. Well, if you sign out completely you can't even see where your friends are.
Anyway, disabling the updates for my own location in Latitude's settings didn't make any difference for me.
As of 4.1.2 Maps is running permanently unless I disable Google Apps Location Access. LAME.
this has been an issue with me since ICS. I've uninstalled maps several times because I was getting such horrible battery life. I've seen my phone die in 3 hours in standby because maps was constantly running. Couple the map issue with your phone searching for a data signal, and it's easy to kill your battery from a full charge in just a few hours. Something needs to be done, severely!!
You can notice an instant, DRAMATIC increase in battery life after uninstalling/freezing maps, btw....I'd recommend giving it a shot to anyone having battery life problems.

I read that all location requests by all Apps goes through Google Maps, when WiFi and Mobile network location is enabled.
I too have been experimenting with different ways to boost my battery life, trying out disabling:
1. Signing out of Latitude
2. Turning off WiFi and Mobile Network Location
3. Turning off Google Now
4. Manually disabling Wifi and Mobile network etc...
So far I realize that its actually #2 that causes battery issues for me. Keeping latitude signed in doesn't seemed to have much impact if #2 is turned off.
I have ended up just uninstalling it because it was by far the most battery draining app on the phone, on the days where I was barely using it maps kept the phone awake for 3+ plus hours, making me charge the phone every day when I didn't even use it!!
My advice is when you need it, install it OR the day before, input the route/address/location you need and after the use for it ended, uninstall it. It'll be in your play store app list anyway so the above process, wont take too long.

You can also freeze it with Titanium Backup or similar. More practical way to do it, IMHO.
By the way, if you freeze it, location services will be in their own process.
Just disable Location access.

Good advice! I'll try it that way in the next couple of days when I have a few job interviews coming up. However, I DO wish EL goog sorts this problem out sooner or later, it's only maps in the core Google apps that really has this problem.
I have updated google maps to the latest update yesterday and now google maps has 2 processes constantly running/sitting in memory and power consumption went up a lot. Battery usage also shows now that google maps is using quite a bit of power, which never happened before. Has anyone noticed the same thing or is it just me?
have you logged into Lattitude?
Nope, I never use Latitude. Just checked and it is off.
Actually I have just uninstalled the update and was able to kill maps process and it didn't come back. Then installed it back and now, even if I kill google maps in the running apps manager, it immediately comes back
Well, THAT happened/happens on mine from the very first beginning even with no maps-update after unboxing and I received one of the first batches of SGS II in Europe.
But since I do not have a batt drain prob (even with heavy use my SGS II lasts minimum 24 hrs) I did not mind maps consuming SOME power ................
.......... and BTW I wouldn´t know how to stop maps-proc since I am (still) not rooted...............
Mine stops eating battery if I disable "use wireless network" under "Location and security". But of course it takes longer to locate me since it needs to get a GPS fix each time I use Maps.

That was the pair of tips I used to get the use I needed with no background process killing my battery. don't update the app for now until I hear the issue is sorted and only use the GPS, not wireless network, to navigate. The latter part is fine as the GPS lock is so fast anyway - usually about a second or two to be down to about 60ft or less.
The extra bonus is that if I'm out with only a 3G connection then dropping the wireless part under "location and security" also stops the wireless services from kicking in on the back of the maps system trying to use it for location. I can be using my phone all day and not have "wi-fi sharing" pop up and start gobbling up %'s even by the end of the day.
I got same issue - Maps process starts randomly and stays up for long time last time I saw it it was 125h consuming up to 14% of battery :/ quite annoying if you kill the process it pops up back again right away...
That Latitude stuff is horrible for battery.
Settings- Applications- Manage Applications- All- Maps- Clear Data.
Regards.
Possibly the cache map tiles in advance (forget the exact title) in the maps menu is checked and is downloading even when you don't have maps open?
Just disable "use wirelrss network" in settings...it should do the trick...seems like it updates your location continuously when you set that feature on....you can always turn it back on when you actually have to use maps....
My problem is that the battery used by gps nd google maps is enormous.... :-(

i have tried everything i turned off location reporting and turned off gps, i cant figure out what else to do to lessen the maps drain. from what i read turning off these settings usually fixes the maps battery issues. what am i missing?
go into settings and disable automatic reporting of your location in maps.

ya i did that like i posted and its still using 40-50%. is there an easy way to stop it from constantly running without completely disabling it?
If you're rooted: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29420959&postcount=7059
Hi, maps seems to be keeping my phone awake when I lock it. I've searched this forum and I've disabled almost all the settings regarding GPS, location etc, as it seems this is what people are recommending. The only ones that I have kept enabled are 'Access my location', 'GPS Satellites' and 'Wifi & mobile network location'.
Better battery starts shows that 'NetworkLocationPassiveCollector' is giving partial wakelock.
Is there any way to stop this without turning GPS off?
Thank you
Anyone help? I've completely disabled location access, gps etc for now to see if it helps.
Mine was doing this a lot recently. I force closed the app, killed cache/data, then relaunched it and went into settings and toggled all of the stupid "track my location in the background" settings (on again, then back off). Haven't had a problem with it since.
It was sneaky about it, too. I would wake up my screen and see the GPS icon in the status bar and it would disappear right away. 20 minutes later I would wake up my phone and it would do the same thing.
Happens to me a lot also. I noticed facebook app will ping my gps occasionally unless I actually close the app out. I just turn location off unless I need it.
I have just moved to a Note 4, with Android 4.4.4 kitkat.
I am trying to understand the relationship between "Location Services" and the use of the GPS.
The new Android 4.4.4 on the Note 4 does not have anymore the "GPS toggle" button, to turn GPS on/off.
Under "Location Services", I see that we have the "Locating Method". I have chosen it as "High Accuracy" (GPS, Wifi and mobile networks).
My main question is if the GPS is really ON all the time under "Hign Accuracy" method, draining battery, or not.
According to my observations, I have seen that when an application using GPS (like a tracking app), a location icon appears in the status bar. It seems that at that moment (when the application is "requiring" the GPS), it is being turned off. And I think that if NO "GPS application" is executing, the new Android is keeping the GPS turned off and saving battery.
If I am right, this is a huge improvement over the previous versions of Android: I can have location services allways ON, but saving battery, and the GPS will be turned on ONLY when it is really needed by a "GPS only" app.
Is this correct ?
Thank you very much.

Well, you do have the GPS toggle. Just look for it in the drawer (use 2 fingers to bring all the toggles in view). EDIT - I see what you mean now - you're right!
If GPS is on, of course it's not really functioning all the time - just when needed. You have to be careful, though, a misbehaved app could use it quite often, increasing dramatically the battery consumption.
Oh, and make sure to turn Report Location off from Google location services. It's a battery killer and you don't really needed (it's used for some - far from all - stuff in Google Now).
I don't think anything has changed. "Off" means off and all location services including GPS are disabled. "On" means whatever location method you've chosen is all on. So if it's high accuracy GPS is still primary and Wi-Fi and carrier signals supplement it. When the little icon appears in the notification bar it means GPS (the actual GPS radio) is active. There used to be some devices that didn't have GPS radios that only used Wi-Fi as a location source but they were tablets and it was a long time ago. When apps call for "location" the GPS radio is always activated, as long as location services are on.

Thanks for the answers.
I have been using my new Note 4 for a week, all the time with "Location Services" ON, and in the "High precision" mode. And I can confirm that the GPS is being turned on only when a "GPS only" application is launched. The small GPS icon on the status bar is always off. With this configuration, I am having extremely good battery performance (over a day), and the GPS is "always ready" to be activated when a "GPS only" app needs it. For me, this is the optimal configuration, and is a nice advantage over Android 4.3.

I sort of agree, but why take out the toggle. There will be times when you just don't want GPS to be used by a particular app, potentially a rogue one as mentioned. As far as I can see, there is no per-app setting for the location method, it's a global setting so you have to turn it off for everything, or have it on for everything, at the level you choose. There is a way to disable GPS altogether in the power saving settings somewhere (which I can't find now...) but that doesn't really help either. It would be pretty cool and totally the best implementation if you could select which app used which location methods. Pity I don't have root... I suspect XPrivacy would sort me right out...
If anyone knows a hidden shortcut to a menu where you can manually turn GPS on and off on a non-rooted phone, please let me know!
