Hi all...sorry if this is very noob but hope someone can help me out...
i got my galaxy s4 for att and its been great so far...i did root it and got rid of all the junk stuff on the phone which was nice to do... but a little issue now..there is an OTA update and its trying to apply it by rebooting but it goes to my console screen i guess and i know even if it applies it it would get rid of root.... is there a way to apply this without having to reinstall all my emails (5 emails) and my apps and keep the root ability on it? I would love to get the feature to send apps to my SD thats the only reason i really want it.
again im sorry if this is very noobish to some of u but would like a nice guide if possible how to do it.
Thanks in advance
What device? Thats important, and DO NOT let it do the update. if you are rooted, you could freeze the samsung updater.
I would get off stock and flash a custom rom.

hehe I know you stated galaxy s4, but I needed to make sure, US version right?
Use my rom, mine is totally stock, with a few modifications, and FAST!
or you can go any TW rom.
here is mine..
[ROM] ViSiON-X v1.0|AROMA|4.2.2|MGA|TW|[08-03]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391142
then you will not have to worry about an update, until someone finds a patch for the update...

I use Infamous S4 as well, I love it. It's pretty stock feeling.
When it comes to the backing up part, I suggest Titanium Backup. Get the pro version and you can batch install all of your apps from a backup, otherwise you have to do it one by one. It also saves all app data and system data and accounts, so you can do a full wipe when installing an update or a new ROM (always a good idea,) then just let it completely restore the phone from a backup. You can use it to back-up everything, except for the home-screen layout (android limitation apparently.) Plus you can backup right to the phone if you have space so you don't have to wory about using the computer. I recomment getting a microSD card for 10 bucks at Staples and backing up to that. When you're restoring, make sure that you check what you're restoring. Most of the stuff in red are system apps that don't need to be restored (as newer or the same versions may already be installed from the update.)
For restoring root priviledges, CWM and TWRP custom rrecoveries have a tool for this.

i know andriod 4.3 has sd card writting issues (and i know the fix is here http://www.sammobile.com/2013/08/11...-breaks-sd-card-writing-for-apps-heres-a-fix/) and would need me to root my device
i did try to unlock it using a guide i have lost the link to, the *#0011# one, but it didnt work for me, after doing the key set to 1 no further menu popped up, from what i can tell my modem band is too high......however this is not so much of an issue for me as the sim card i use (the three one) is what i will continue to use for the next year and a half (im on the "ONE" plan so unlimited internet and tethering etc)
i cant find a straight forward guide on rooting the s4 and installing a custom rom (ie the google edition 4.3) for non factory unlocked phones, found one for factory unlocked phones (which mine sadly is not)
so is it possible? or am i stuffed as im not factory unlocked?
thanks in advance

If you have your recovery you should be ok. Just flash a new kernal and a new rom, or restore your nandroid backup... you did make one right?
Two things worth repeating:
1) You can never read too much before/during rooting. The more you know, the more you will be able to deal with hiccups.
2) BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP everything, then copy the backup on your PC! nandoid backups will save you in a bind.
Just start again, from the start, do a full wipe, flash a new kernel and a new ROM. Take it slowly and don't panic just yet, I've been there before and I always managed to claw the phone back to life! Best of luck with it!

Hi,
As RossFixxed says,do not panic.
I used PhilZ to flash that ROM, and it worked fine.
You can use the recovery to flash another CWM recovery,or TWRP.
Or you can try to go back to square one.
Look HERE
This will remove root and custom recovery.
Hello, I have just got a Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 White 16GB in the UK locked to the O2 network. This is my first time using an Android phone and I have looked around and saw the Google Edition, how do I flash it onto my phone? is there any drawbacks is the ROM the official one, it will not damage my phone or anything will it? I have warranty on it, I do know rooting and flashing voids the warranty but will I be able to unroot and go back to the official OS that was on the phone?
I just want the Google Play Edition as I find the Touchwiz UI horrible and GPE is apparently quite faster and better for battery life.
Please help me and please take into consideration that I am a beginner and have never done this kind of stuff, thanks.
That's simple.
You need:
Heimdall suite: https://github.com/downloads/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/heimdall-suite-1.3.2-win32.zip
CWM Recovery: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
ROM:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348272
1.Install heimdall on pc
2. download recovery for your device
3.Turn off phone > Press vol down + home +power button, you will go to download mode
4.run heimdall with command prompt and type: heimdall flash --recovery yourrecovery.img if that will not work type: heimdall flash --RECOVERY yourrecovery.img
5. Turn off your phone and go to recovery by pressing vol up + home + power button
6. Wipe data and flash your rom from sd card.
7. Reboot.
8. Enjoy.
Press thanks if it work for You.

First what firmware are you currently on? I have an o2 model and I believe they are still officially on 4.2.2. firmware I think. If you are on a 4.2.2 firmware pre knox bootloaders you'll be fine. You can root and later use triangle away to clear the counters. If you are on a KNOX bootloader then rooting will make it impossible for you to downgrade to a lower firmware.
Rooting is easy, you just need to flash CF-Root, flash custom recovery and good to go using Odin. There are a few different GPE roms around so read the relevant threads and see what users are saying in regards to the roms.
I have no idea what Knox and stuff is, I'm a basic beginner so I basically know nothing, here is screenshot of it
Just checked I have Knox installed so rooting and stuff will void my warranty forever without any chance of getting it back right?
An easy way to check is to shut down your phone, hold the volume down + home button + power button until you are presented with a green Android and a warning about download mode, press whichever it is to go to download mode (don't worry, to get out of it just hold down the power button and then restart your phone). You are looking for knox warranty or something like that with a 0x0 or 0x1 beside it, if it isn't in the list in the top left corner, you are pre-knox bootloader and you are fine to follow the instructions provided above.

I have done it and it seems I do not have this supposed Knox thing, btw can you give me a link with good instructions on how to cf flash, install custom recovery and use odin? I also don't know what GPE rom to go with, I just want one that is fast, stable and makes my battery life good
Hi,
Just wanted to put my 2 pence in and help with choosing a ROM.
I have flashed both GPE other roms on my S4 and I must say the best Rom in terms of battery (speed, size and customisation) is PACman rom. This may not he very helpful if you are definitely wanting to go pure android but I was in the same position and after using PACman its hard to recommend anything else.
You will lose some Sammy services like smart scroll, samsung camera functions, s-health and others but if you can live with that have a play and try out the different roms.
Once rooted and added a recovery (I use CWM) you can flash and flash any roms you like to try.
Give the rom a day or 2 to settle and see what you like the best.

Hi everyone!
Basicly I can't install Samsung based ROMs on my s4 i9505. I am able to install only aosp based ROMs. I flashed manyroms starting from Omega, echoe and many more.
I even tried to flash stock ROM but it is not rebooting and gives bootloops.
Appreciated for all your advises.

My personal best experience was to use the ROM Here
Its very quick and has a couple of little extras for you.
May I say that you will need to ROOT your device which will void your warranty.
Im not 100% sure how O2 set their devices up but you may need to see if there are any O2 related apps you need/want to keep also before flashing.
You will also need to install a recovery.
The procedure is very simple and their are some very detailed explanations and step by step guides on how to achieve this.
Please think carefully about what your next step is as its very easy to root and then unroot but some devices have KNOX built in to them which means as soon as you root you "flip a switch" (a sort of eswitch) which cant, as of yet, be flipped back again and no amount of "unrooting" will reset your device exactly how it was before modifying.
It sounds daunting but everyone on here is really helpful and you are not the first to be trying this for the first time. There are 100's of users all doing the same thing as you and asking all the right questions. Everyone has a point of view and some people may prefer one thing over another. Once you are ready let us know and we can point you in a few more directions/posts.

Hello, thanks for your reply, I checked through that download mode on my S4 and I did not see that Knox counter 0x0 or 0x1 or any mention of it anywhere so it's safe to say that I am on 4.2.2 pre knox bootloader, I am currently looking on CF-Flash root using Odin, will look into recovery but since you have experience could you recommend me to a guide for the recovery you are using which I see a lot of people use

You know the GPE ROM you recommended, will it work for my GT-I9505 UK O2 model, it's locked to O2 if that makes any difference?
This should work fine. But I would maybe do a little diggin to see if it does.
My device was a Vodafone device and I used this with no problems at all.

Mine is locked to Meteor Ireland and I installed (a different) GE ROM with zero issues. It booted first time, and from my own experience that's a rarity!
Best of luck with it, I love the GE ROM especially since I have the one thing I thought wouldn't work: the IR blaster! There's a watchON apk on xda somewhere and it's great! It fcs a few times but it will work!
Nice ^^
May I also suggest you do this:
Root device and install recovery
Make a Nandroid backup from within recovery and save that to your external SD card
Then go ahead and flash new rom
That way if anything should go wrong you can just restore your phone from your Nandroid back up.
Very useful

Do this! Then copy the backup folder onto your PC also. Nandroid backups have saved me many times! It's easy to forget.
I've been doing this for years and forgot with my S4 to install a custom recovery That was a bit silly, then flashed without a nandroid backup, that's a bad idea!
Even if there isn't any issue sometimes you just think: I don't like this and prefered it the way it was, you can have it back to EXACTLY the way it was in about 5 mins with a backup!
I do not have a external SD card at the moment, will this be problem??
Thanks everyone, I've managed to get a 4.3 GPE ROM installed!!!
I have tried many methods to bypass boot loader and install CWM or TWRP on i337 phones, all for which they failed, I am not sure whether because I have NC1 device
My phone is Rooted, NC1, My ultimate objective is to install T mobile Rom, so I can get Wifi-calling on my at&t, what do I need to do in order to that??? I am willing to downgrade or anything to reach my objective.

OH right (I did this long time ago so forgot most of it), So if I wanted to install a tmobile s4 custom rom (DARTHSTALKER) on my i337 I could use safestrap, and then flash my kernel using odin for it to work? or that would break the phone?
not sure, i don't use SafeStrap and not familiar with rom
i would make sure it is safestrap compatible and see if any other att folks have flashed it
i do that by skimming last 30 pages and in-forum search for safestrap and att
or you can ask, but have found most times you get no answer on those type of questions. it has to be TW based--
You can get full root access on NC1

It's very hard to achieve what I did in these screen shots... sorta lol I just got the phone delivered yesterday at 2pm and hit Red Bull for 15 hours hacking it... I have full root access in system... knox is frozen by TiBu as you can see SELiniux is permissive, SuperSU Pro in control without a popup warning... I do have a new boot screen though with the unlocked lock lol. Bye bye warranty! I bought the 2 year replacement one and they don't care if it's rooted lol.
Check out the screen captures... I had to slug it out getting one app at a time til I finally figured out how to get TiBu su access... that was the key! I'd have to write a small novel explaining it, and I'm tired as heck lol. Some shots were too big. Point is... its stable I don't think you get this with safe strap do ya? Maybe ya do... but I hacked it lol. Still stock OS with a lot of freezes. If this is something different and ya wanna know reply to the message, but it takes a while and you need to really know your adb commands and be good with terminal emulator because it' s literally all you'll have for most of the 'fight' with Knox... and it really is. Lucky it didn't boot loop lol but I wanted full root access. I'll just deodex it and get rid of the bloatware later. I still wish I could flash CWM though lol. I like AOSP roms

Lucky it didn't boot loop lol but I wanted full root access. I'll just deodex it and get rid of the bloatware later. I still wish I could flash CWM though lol. I like AOSP roms

Would have been easier on you to use TowelRoot which would give full root access and then use safestrap for its recovery. Could of avoided the 15 hours in about 1 minute with the TowelRoot app
I did try it. Several times. Didn't work at all... It was a lot of fun doing this honestly I haven't had a good challenge in a while lol. I managed to hack knox out of my device using nothing but the device itself and knowledge I have. I really don't want multiple Roms in my device. I just want one ROM like I have in all the others, and that's what I have now and I got CWM installed last night finally... A bit glitchy and not 100% stable yet... It has issues backing up to external SD for some reason. It'll backup to internal though. I used it to flash a small and meaningless update.zip I assembled to test it and it worked with it I'm not sure it would be successful using a backup yet either to restore the device... If I just used towel root I wouldn't have ever figured any of this out, and if I can get it a bit more simplified and figure out which particular steps or combinationof steps allowed me to exploit the system and get it in tthere and I can get it stable... I can tell everyone else how to do it. A friend on XDA is working on a tool now to simple install SuperSU into system... He done it on another device and got cwm installed on a device with a locked boot loader also. I used some of the code to get an idea how to do it on the sgh-i337. Its not impossible... Just hard to figure out I think that's one of the things XDA exist for... To learn and progress and help others... Right?

Right, absolutely. Good job. We'll be curious how you do it once you get it figured out.

OH right (I did this long time ago so forgot most of it), So if I wanted to install a tmobile s4 custom rom (DARTHSTALKER) on my i337 I could use safestrap, and then flash my kernel using odin for it to work? or that would break the phone?

Well Great Job then, I do applaud you for your work you done. Hopefully for those that are stuck using safestrap you can get it to the point they could use cwm. That would be awesome.

I seriously would not try that using safe strap in i337 @ this point. The ROM would need to be ported as a multicarrier , which is pretty simple in and of itself... A lot of debugging I'd imagine though. You'll only get 2g speed using ATT device on TMO ya know. They have different 3g and 4g LTE bands. It just won't work. If you flash that ROM.. IIt's very likely you'll soft brick or hard brick the device. I have the ATT kernel decomped now working with it... I haven't downloaded any existing ROMS used with i337 yet, but I'll get one and check it out and see what has been done with Knox in it. Just very risky flashing a ROM not specific to your device...
Hey guys, I have been out of the android world for a couple of years, I would appreciate some guidance.
I I'm currently living in US
T-mobil
Model number: SM-G935T
Android version: 6.0.1
Updated right now
So my question is, since I don't have any backup or anything, can someone provide me with the steps to get me started? Like what post to root it on this specific carrier and how everything? please
Thanks

Of course we can get your started but see
But first you must answer us these question three.
Why do you want root?
Do you have a computer? (This is a must for root.)
Are you ready to be disappointed?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-s7-edge/how-to/how-to-root-s7-edge-t3410470
follow this (use odin to flash rooted kernel) ......you should search before posting things like this.....google is your friend bro.
GOOD LUCK - BTW use flash fire app in play store to make backups and flash roms
Okay okay.
A quick glance at T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion would have led you to the "How to root the S7 EDGE" thread.
I'd take a look in there if I were you.

Well while I was waiting I just rooted it. So what do you think that would be the next step towards installing a rom? To answer your survey questions  :
1- Because a phone without being rooted is like a bird without wins.
2- I do
3- Oh well... tell me more

Well then.
Rooting the phone (as I'm sure you had already found out) was fairly easy.
BUT... since we do not have an unlocked bootloader then we cannot have any custom recovery. Which means we can only (for now) use adb and Fireflash to flash any custom firmwares. And while we're on the subject of that... there is only one custom rom. Well... technically there are two but only one for you since you updated to the latest firmware.
Echoe ROM which was updated (ummm...) September 9th (not including the Verizon version which might work but with no promises)
Tekxv2 which was updated back in July. Unfortunately, that is flashed by adb (computer required) and only supports G935TUVS3APD8 which is... pretty old.
Things that you may notice with root.
Battery life may be shorter.
Strange icons on your status bar.
Might start to have random reboots for absolutely no reason.
Can't use Samsung Pay and some other apps.
Phone might be laggy.
Phone might feel hot.
Some of those can be resolved by flashing the only custom rom that we have (Echoe ROM... which is a rather nice rom) but it's not "there" yet.
Or you can use the guide in my signature to resolve issues like the lag and the strange icons. Yet even after the "fix" you might still experience both again from time to time.
You might even have the IMS force close issue which I used to get about once a month. It would piss me off because no sooner that you click the button, it'll pop up again and you don't have time to do anything. You're pretty much forced to reflash stock, wipe, re-root, restore a latest backup... which can take hours and is rather inconvenient if it happens to you while you're at work like it always seemed to happen for me.
SO...
All in all... root is okay. It's better than nothing I suppose. But until we get more developer support for this phone then in my opinion it's kinda pointless in my opinion.
Too many drawbacks. I eventually unrooted two weeks ago and I love my phone now. I'm using the heck out of Samsung Pay especially since their promotions are pretty nice right now! Plus a few members are testing the Nouget update which probably won't be getting root at all since rooting requires an engineering kernel which we don't have and might not get. Or an unlocked bootloader which we've pretty much given up on.
A lot of members that are testing the Nouget beta firmware are extremely satisfied with it so if we can't root Nouget then having a rooted S7 will probably fade away as more people update to Android 7+. That's where I see this going anyway.

So for what I understood the dev support for this phone is very limited... I know the issues I may encounter, I had them with the galaxy note. but any way... If something I'll unroot it but I want to try it out Thank for you time. I've rooted it.
EDIT: Damn... I really don't like the visual style of Echoe... is that one the only one I can flash??

How are you doing with the ads? Like youtube, pandora, spotify? I just installed xposed and the phone feels very hot, and If I unroot it (which I'm thinking to do) I won't be able to get things without ads (I know about vpns and browsers). Also how can I install teaks for apps? Installing apks from pages that promise you this and you have to log in is very untruthful. Any suggestions to all this?

I just put up with them.
In all reality, I don't use my phone for the purposes that require my viewing of ads to begin with.
Sure when I was rooted I had adblocker. But honestly, I had completely forgotten all about that benefit of being rooted until now.
I suppose if you absolutely need to be rid of ads then by all means, retain root. However ads don't effect my daily use one bit.

I just flash the appropriate firmware that you had prior to rooting with ODIN.
Never had any issues. Which "guide" are you referring to?

You're probably trying to flash a firmware with a V3 bootloader over G935TTMB4APK1.
If you were seriously following that (outdated) guide step by step then you tried flashing TMB_G935TUVU3APG1.zip over a PK1 firmware. Yeah... that doesn't work.
Download the latest firmware from sammmobile.
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G935T/
Try it again.
IF that doesn't work... try using Smart Switch.
I haven't done it before but I think it's the Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization.

You have no idea the help you gave me. I went to sammobil before but since it said that the download speed was too slow, I didn't do it through that page. Now I did it and it's working fine thanks bro.
But when I start it, it says: custom in the log in, how can I totally put it original?

You should flash everything.
BL= Bootloader (which should be V4 since you updated to the latest firmware already. Anything less than V4 will fail.)
AP= Is for System, Cache, kernel, etc.
CP= Is for modems
CSC is for your HOME_CSC_TMB_G935TTMB4APK1_CL9507190_QB11413830_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 file.
Important! If you use the CSC_TMB_G935TTMB4APK1_CL9507190_QB11413830_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 (doesn't have the word "HOME" in the name) then it'll wipe your phone!
If your phone still says "CUSTOM" on it then make sure that reboot and check again. If it still says custom then make sure that you don't still have the engineering kernel. Re-flash the AP files again if so. It shouldn't though if it's 100% stock. Also note if you saw the unlocked padlock on the S7 Edge splash screen (before the bootanimation).
Good luck and happy New Year.
