I have tried many methods to bypass boot loader and install CWM or TWRP on i337 phones, all for which they failed, I am not sure whether because I have NC1 device
My phone is Rooted, NC1, My ultimate objective is to install T mobile Rom, so I can get Wifi-calling on my at&t, what do I need to do in order to that??? I am willing to downgrade or anything to reach my objective.
Here are some guides that I saw at
galaxys4root dot com
"How to Install GT-i9505/T-Mobile Custom ROMs on AT&T Galaxy S4!"
But i couldn't Install cwm or TWRP to proceed. Please Help.
you are post mdl build and can not run cwm or custom twrp only safestrap recovery. surprised you didn't run across that when you rooted and installed safestrap--
as far as wifi calling--don't know, but believe i have read not on an att phone

OH right (I did this long time ago so forgot most of it), So if I wanted to install a tmobile s4 custom rom (DARTHSTALKER) on my i337 I could use safestrap, and then flash my kernel using odin for it to work? or that would break the phone?
not sure, i don't use SafeStrap and not familiar with rom
i would make sure it is safestrap compatible and see if any other att folks have flashed it
i do that by skimming last 30 pages and in-forum search for safestrap and att
or you can ask, but have found most times you get no answer on those type of questions. it has to be TW based--
You can get full root access on NC1

It's very hard to achieve what I did in these screen shots... sorta lol I just got the phone delivered yesterday at 2pm and hit Red Bull for 15 hours hacking it... I have full root access in system... knox is frozen by TiBu as you can see SELiniux is permissive, SuperSU Pro in control without a popup warning... I do have a new boot screen though with the unlocked lock lol. Bye bye warranty! I bought the 2 year replacement one and they don't care if it's rooted lol.
Check out the screen captures... I had to slug it out getting one app at a time til I finally figured out how to get TiBu su access... that was the key! I'd have to write a small novel explaining it, and I'm tired as heck lol. Some shots were too big. Point is... its stable I don't think you get this with safe strap do ya? Maybe ya do... but I hacked it lol. Still stock OS with a lot of freezes. If this is something different and ya wanna know reply to the message, but it takes a while and you need to really know your adb commands and be good with terminal emulator because it' s literally all you'll have for most of the 'fight' with Knox... and it really is. Lucky it didn't boot loop lol but I wanted full root access. I'll just deodex it and get rid of the bloatware later. I still wish I could flash CWM though lol. I like AOSP roms

Would have been easier on you to use TowelRoot which would give full root access and then use safestrap for its recovery. Could of avoided the 15 hours in about 1 minute with the TowelRoot app
I did try it. Several times. Didn't work at all... It was a lot of fun doing this honestly I haven't had a good challenge in a while lol. I managed to hack knox out of my device using nothing but the device itself and knowledge I have. I really don't want multiple Roms in my device. I just want one ROM like I have in all the others, and that's what I have now and I got CWM installed last night finally... A bit glitchy and not 100% stable yet... It has issues backing up to external SD for some reason. It'll backup to internal though. I used it to flash a small and meaningless update.zip I assembled to test it and it worked with it I'm not sure it would be successful using a backup yet either to restore the device... If I just used towel root I wouldn't have ever figured any of this out, and if I can get it a bit more simplified and figure out which particular steps or combinationof steps allowed me to exploit the system and get it in tthere and I can get it stable... I can tell everyone else how to do it. A friend on XDA is working on a tool now to simple install SuperSU into system... He done it on another device and got cwm installed on a device with a locked boot loader also. I used some of the code to get an idea how to do it on the sgh-i337. Its not impossible... Just hard to figure out I think that's one of the things XDA exist for... To learn and progress and help others... Right?

I seriously would not try that using safe strap in i337 @ this point. The ROM would need to be ported as a multicarrier , which is pretty simple in and of itself... A lot of debugging I'd imagine though. You'll only get 2g speed using ATT device on TMO ya know. They have different 3g and 4g LTE bands. It just won't work. If you flash that ROM.. IIt's very likely you'll soft brick or hard brick the device. I have the ATT kernel decomped now working with it... I haven't downloaded any existing ROMS used with i337 yet, but I'll get one and check it out and see what has been done with Knox in it. Just very risky flashing a ROM not specific to your device...

Somewhat of a noob here so bare with me...
I have an AT&T S4 here in the US and just downloaded the 4.4 kitkat update but postponed it from installing. I imagine firmware comes with this where i wont be able to install a custom recovery and ROM, is that correct? I have my phone rooted which is running MK2 but have yet to install a recovery and ROM on it. I read on AT&T's website that i can only postpone the update 3 times for 4 hours at a time so i guess i have to figure this out soon. What do you guys think? Install the update OR immediately install a recovery and a new ROM so i am not forced to install this update? Thanks for the help fellas, this site has helped me so much already!

You CAN NOT install CWM or TWRP on your mk2 S4. Only Safestrap 3.71 is a recovery that works. This is common knowledge that is posted throughout the forums on XDA. Search is your friend. But here, let me give you everything you need so you can not brick your phone in the first place. Please read it & thank the op in the threads. Good luck.

Check out the "all things mk2 nb1" topic. It's in this section. It tells you which files to freeze or if you safestrap and install custom rom your fine. Postponing the update does not mean it won't do it tonight all by itself.
Dev Time Estimates?
Does anyone have an estimate on about how long it will take devs to analyze the security of the new bootloader for the possibility of custom ROMS/recoveries? We can always hope that AT&T/Samsung has opened up a new exploit while trying to fix the old one. :silly:

If there is 1 thing I've learned here...don't ask for a time frame. It piss them off, and that's the last thing we want. Just use titanium backup to freeze the AT&T updater and wait. I've waited this long for 4.4 a few more weeks won't kill me.

If you are on MK2, you did not install CWM recovery. You think you did, but you actually booted back into the stock recovery. Which is the best thing that could have happened to you because a lot of people brick their phones and lose recovery completely trying to install a custom recovery (beside Safestrap) on any firmware past MDL. Fortunately, there is a method for most people to recover even if they do Derp their phone. I suggest you take time to read about what is and is not possible with your phone and the different firmwares because the next time you might not be so lucky. Good luck.

Is it possible to un-lock the boot loader on this device? I have read that ATT has locked boot loaders.
Also do I need root to enable USB Host? When I use USB host checker , android,hardware.usb.host is checked green.
But,

I have the SM-t537a, Or the new 10.1 I used towel-root and it did in fact give me full root, Also unlocked the device. I only tested it for root with one of the root checkers from the play store I am sorry I cannot remember witch one. I booted to recovery mode and had full access to the boot-loader
However there are no roms for my device as it is so new. The towel-root is available on the net, I just typed in towel-root on Google,. It took me 3 or 4 tries before I got a clean link, just be careful and follow the instructions, and you should have no problems. Here is the good link for the towel root .apk just go to Google search and type in towel root. I am new here so I cannot post the link, but it is towel root by geohot.
Towel root won't install on my device even though i told it to allow unknown apps. Any ideas on why this is? I have the ATT tab 4 also. I really want to unlock the bootloader on this if anyone knows a work around.

hopefully you already found your answer... you have to downgrade to an exploitable version T537AUCU1ANE1 then use TR. I had the same issue around the start of this year. It's posted in this thread:

OK, I just got this damn Samsung tab 4. I Have the exact one (ATT), it is running 4.4.2. TR does NOT work on this, tried it. Can someone point me in the direction for another method. Looking for the method flashing older version to gain root. Usually google will get me where I need to go, not this time.

AT&T and Verizon lock all their bootloaders, so unfortunately custom recoveries and custom kernels are impossible. You could build a custom rom, just as long as it was able to run on top of the stock kernel (so no cyanogenmod). You still have to figure out a way to flash it (Flash Fire maybe?)
Dang. Time to sell this thing lol.
So when did all this get so complicated? I take a hiatus from Android for a year or two and come back and everything is locked down. Maybe I'm wrong, but it never used to be this difficult.
Locked bootloaders are a terrible thing
I just acquired a GS4 from ATT today. it is:
Android 4.4.2 (which I upgraded myself)
Baseband V: I337UCUFNC1
I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663545 But I wanted to make sure there is not anything newer or different since then. I wasn't able to find anything else by searching. I'm trying to root this phone to use CyanogenMod. Unfortunately, my phone is not supported in their list of easy installs.
Can someone verify the steps for me to root and flash Cyan to this model phone before I pull the trigger? Thanks!

So what's the problem? ATT? too new a hardware version? I have the worst luck with this stuff - if I buy a router to flash a custom firmware like Tomato, it's the ONLY version that isn't supported. crazy.
I'm not sure what a custom recovery is unfortunately. That said, can I root this phone at all? I guess if I can't flash the rom I want to use, can I at least install titanium and freeze all the crapware that I don't want running?
btw - thanks for the response.

Any build after mdl has the bootloader locked down. If you read thru those two threads OP pages you get an idea. You will also need to get familiar with SafeStrap. I am on the old build and can use an exploit called loki-doki to bypass Sammy's security check and allow kernel to flash.
There may be some new stuff on rooting NC1, but I don't keep up. Basically you had to go back to mk2 to root then go back NC1 and use SafeStrap to flash only TW roms. The SafeStrap thread will explain that. But, it creates slots on the System partition again fooling Sammy. More or less--
Like I said not an expert as I don't have the issue you have with bootloader. But that is the gist of it. Just need to read up so you don't brick--good luck.

New way to root is call towelroot. Google it or search for it around here the link is everywhere. It's an apk file made by geohot (same guy that jail broke the iphone and ps3). Once you root you can install safestrap. If you've ever owned an droid device they have something identical called boot strap. Think of it as a dual boot of sorts. Definitely keep your eyes on these threads as well as the sgs5 thread. If an exploit is discovered it'll probably be for the s5 and will be compatible with our s4 (towel root was made for the s5 but works for a whole bunch of devices)

I was in the same boat as you 2 weeks ago, bought a NC1 and wanted CM, and used this to root. I currently use the Google Edition ROM that has been modified to work on locked bootloader phones, though it does have it's fallbacks. For someone new I'd recommend GoldenEye, just click the link on my signature to download it.
Good luck!

I just towelrooted. It worked! I was watching this video http://gs5.wonderhowto.com/how-to/r...nt-even-at-t-verizon-20-seconds-flat-0155617/ and I did it while I Was watching the video. On my device, it did not even reboot - i just said "should be rooted" so I loaded a root checker and sure enough, it is rooted! took all of about 8 seconds.
Now, on to a rom.
I'm confused now. Why can I not use CM? I read about SafeStrap and I understand it's sort of a dual boot setup - I get that. So, in a sense, I'm not really installing FRESH, a new rom - at least not in the sense that you format your hard disk and install a new OS. However, what ARE my choices in roms? I know the whiz touch, and now the golden eye, plus the google modified - but what else? I want something cut down, simple and battery friendly. I'm not a super power user and I don't require much. Actually, battery life is the most important thing to me.
This is my business phone - I use Gmail, SMS, maybe take a few pictures - and I listen to podcasts. very basic user. Advice?

I just towelrooted. It worked! I was watching this video http://gs5.wonderhowto.com/how-to/r...nt-even-at-t-verizon-20-seconds-flat-0155617/ and I did it while I Was watching the video. On my device, it did not even reboot - i just said "should be rooted" so I loaded a root checker and sure enough, it is rooted! took all of about 8 seconds.
Now, on to a rom.

MDL builds have an exploit that allows the kernel to flash. That is loki-doki. Bypasses the Sammy security check to allow this. There is no exploit yet for post MDL builds. Hence you can only flash stock Touch Wiz kernels, thus only roms that have them. So, no aosp based roms. In one of the threads in General that talk about MK2/NC1 etc is a list of roms for you. I forget the technical coding side of SafeStrap. But, it puts roms in System bypassing the bootloader. But, no way of doing that with aosp roms yet.
I am old and don't retain things much anymore if they are not very important to me. So, although I have read up on this stuff, and have a "45 year old" Engineering Degree, I don't need SafeStrap having the MDL bootloader. So, don't remember all that I have read. But, what I said is the basics of it.
Your roms need to have SafeStrap option in the rom thread's OP page. If not listed, it won't work. Having said all that things like Towelroot are new and more options may come along. :good:
I want to root my phone which I found towel route which I I downloaded but its not really working, which I found out is due to bootloader being locked. so I decided what I needed to do was unlock the bootloader but I'm reading all these forums which are talking about roms and I have no idea what that is. I was wondering if someone could kind of walk me through this a little bit like talk about it n smaller not so technical terms because I don't really understand it. I know some coding and a lot of the technical know-how but I've never really worked with phones and really deep programming I guess. I'm sure I could figure it out if someone explained it.

Here's a video that might help a little. It's sort of old, but depending on which version of android you're on it'll probably help you get root access at the very least
What firmware version are you on? If you're on newer firmware the vid the other guy linked to is not going to work for you. There are tutorials in the general forum that can help you.

Galaxy s4
I was able to root my phone using towel root, then I disabled Knox with supersu. I wanted to remove all the bloat wear so I thought getting a new rom would do it (I've been researching) and I tried that three times but it keeps resetting my phone to factory settings. What am I doing wrong? I tried CM and that pacman one. I really like the aok(whatever letter) one but it's not compatible with my phone. I have a galaxy s4 unlocked, it's at&t but I actually have tmobile. I have all the at&t software AND tmobile crud on here. I really want it gone. I was trying to install the roms through my sd card with my phone on odis mode.

Are you using safestrap and flashing touch wiz based roms? Cm and Pac will not work on your device if you're using safestrap.

Inever got around to downloading safestrap. I thought that was something you did after you downloaded the rom. And I've never heard of the other one. It shows up with something about verification problems. I should have written it down. It took so long for my phone to turn back on.

I'm not sure what firmware version your phone is on but I'm guessing it's on a newer version where cwm or twrp recoveries are not going to work. You'll need to install safestrap and install roms with it.

Okay. I will try that. I did post a picture of my device information in my second post in case it had what you were asking get for.

Hey guys, I have been out of the android world for a couple of years, I would appreciate some guidance.
I I'm currently living in US
T-mobil
Model number: SM-G935T
Android version: 6.0.1
Updated right now
So my question is, since I don't have any backup or anything, can someone provide me with the steps to get me started? Like what post to root it on this specific carrier and how everything? please
Thanks

Of course we can get your started but see
But first you must answer us these question three.
Why do you want root?
Do you have a computer? (This is a must for root.)
Are you ready to be disappointed?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-s7-edge/how-to/how-to-root-s7-edge-t3410470
follow this (use odin to flash rooted kernel) ......you should search before posting things like this.....google is your friend bro.
GOOD LUCK - BTW use flash fire app in play store to make backups and flash roms
Okay okay.
A quick glance at T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion would have led you to the "How to root the S7 EDGE" thread.
I'd take a look in there if I were you.

Well while I was waiting I just rooted it. So what do you think that would be the next step towards installing a rom? To answer your survey questions  :
1- Because a phone without being rooted is like a bird without wins.
2- I do
3- Oh well... tell me more

Well then.
Rooting the phone (as I'm sure you had already found out) was fairly easy.
BUT... since we do not have an unlocked bootloader then we cannot have any custom recovery. Which means we can only (for now) use adb and Fireflash to flash any custom firmwares. And while we're on the subject of that... there is only one custom rom. Well... technically there are two but only one for you since you updated to the latest firmware.
Echoe ROM which was updated (ummm...) September 9th (not including the Verizon version which might work but with no promises)
Tekxv2 which was updated back in July. Unfortunately, that is flashed by adb (computer required) and only supports G935TUVS3APD8 which is... pretty old.
Things that you may notice with root.
Battery life may be shorter.
Strange icons on your status bar.
Might start to have random reboots for absolutely no reason.
Can't use Samsung Pay and some other apps.
Phone might be laggy.
Phone might feel hot.
Some of those can be resolved by flashing the only custom rom that we have (Echoe ROM... which is a rather nice rom) but it's not "there" yet.
Or you can use the guide in my signature to resolve issues like the lag and the strange icons. Yet even after the "fix" you might still experience both again from time to time.
You might even have the IMS force close issue which I used to get about once a month. It would piss me off because no sooner that you click the button, it'll pop up again and you don't have time to do anything. You're pretty much forced to reflash stock, wipe, re-root, restore a latest backup... which can take hours and is rather inconvenient if it happens to you while you're at work like it always seemed to happen for me.
SO...
All in all... root is okay. It's better than nothing I suppose. But until we get more developer support for this phone then in my opinion it's kinda pointless in my opinion.
Too many drawbacks. I eventually unrooted two weeks ago and I love my phone now. I'm using the heck out of Samsung Pay especially since their promotions are pretty nice right now! Plus a few members are testing the Nouget update which probably won't be getting root at all since rooting requires an engineering kernel which we don't have and might not get. Or an unlocked bootloader which we've pretty much given up on.
A lot of members that are testing the Nouget beta firmware are extremely satisfied with it so if we can't root Nouget then having a rooted S7 will probably fade away as more people update to Android 7+. That's where I see this going anyway.

So for what I understood the dev support for this phone is very limited... I know the issues I may encounter, I had them with the galaxy note. but any way... If something I'll unroot it but I want to try it out Thank for you time. I've rooted it.
EDIT: Damn... I really don't like the visual style of Echoe... is that one the only one I can flash??

How are you doing with the ads? Like youtube, pandora, spotify? I just installed xposed and the phone feels very hot, and If I unroot it (which I'm thinking to do) I won't be able to get things without ads (I know about vpns and browsers). Also how can I install teaks for apps? Installing apks from pages that promise you this and you have to log in is very untruthful. Any suggestions to all this?

I just put up with them.
In all reality, I don't use my phone for the purposes that require my viewing of ads to begin with.
Sure when I was rooted I had adblocker. But honestly, I had completely forgotten all about that benefit of being rooted until now.
I suppose if you absolutely need to be rid of ads then by all means, retain root. However ads don't effect my daily use one bit.

You're probably trying to flash a firmware with a V3 bootloader over G935TTMB4APK1.
If you were seriously following that (outdated) guide step by step then you tried flashing TMB_G935TUVU3APG1.zip over a PK1 firmware. Yeah... that doesn't work.
Download the latest firmware from sammmobile.
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G935T/
Try it again.
IF that doesn't work... try using Smart Switch.
I haven't done it before but I think it's the Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization.

You have no idea the help you gave me. I went to sammobil before but since it said that the download speed was too slow, I didn't do it through that page. Now I did it and it's working fine thanks bro.
But when I start it, it says: custom in the log in, how can I totally put it original?

You should flash everything.
BL= Bootloader (which should be V4 since you updated to the latest firmware already. Anything less than V4 will fail.)
AP= Is for System, Cache, kernel, etc.
CP= Is for modems
CSC is for your HOME_CSC_TMB_G935TTMB4APK1_CL9507190_QB11413830_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 file.
Important! If you use the CSC_TMB_G935TTMB4APK1_CL9507190_QB11413830_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 (doesn't have the word "HOME" in the name) then it'll wipe your phone!
If your phone still says "CUSTOM" on it then make sure that reboot and check again. If it still says custom then make sure that you don't still have the engineering kernel. Re-flash the AP files again if so. It shouldn't though if it's 100% stock. Also note if you saw the unlocked padlock on the S7 Edge splash screen (before the bootanimation).
Good luck and happy New Year.
